Do you often find yourself wishing you were more persuasive? Would you love to know the secret to making great decisions? Do you want to do more good and work for a business that does good in the world? Then you want to listen to Zoë Chance, the persuasion expert. Zoë studies and teaches behavioral science to help great people become more influential. At Yale School of Management, she works with executives and has developed a popular MBA elective called Mastering Influence and Persuasion, aka "Doing Uncomfortable Things That Make You a Better Person." Her course ‘How To Make Behaviour Addictive’ is also heavily in demand.“The key insight that I’ve learned… is that the primary drivers of all of our decisions and all of our behaviours are unconscious.... we can't just reflect on those. We only perceive the conscious, rational processes of decision making. It's our gut first reactions that are actually very hard to change. And then, consciously, we look for reasons to be able to do those things that we already want to do.”What the world needs most right now, according to Zoë, is to be able to create a more democratic marketplace of ideas. "The way information is shared these days is so consolidated and hierarchical, we miss out on most of the knowledge that exists."In this podcast:Why some companies and brands are really good at connecting emotionally to peopleMastering influence and persuasionHow to connect authentically with another personZoë’s new book - the general topic of the book is influence for nice peopleWhy Zoë’s mission is to help smart, well intentioned people become more influentialHow we can transform more companies to be ‘humanity plus’ enginesWhy she believes education needs innovationClimate change should be the priority for every company right nowLinks:www.zoechance.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If I offer the word influence, is your immediate reaction negative or positive? Zoë Chance (www.zoechance.com) has done the research. She knows what the reaction is for most people, it is not positive. But, that doesn’t have to be the case. What if influence could be a force for good? That’s what Chance all about. Her course on influence is one of the most popular at Yale School of Management, her behavioral economics framework is the foundation for Google’s global food policy guidelines and her work is often covered in places like The Economist, The New York Times, and the BBC. In today’s conversation, we also take a step back in time, explore Zoë’s personal journey, which started in a very different place. Prior to teaching at Yale, Zoë managed a $200 million segment of the Barbie brand and received her doctorate from Harvard Business School.Check out our offerings & partners: Talkspace: Go to talkspace.com/student and make sure to use the code GOODLIFE to get your first week free.Skinsei: Visit Skinsei.com/GOODLIFE for a free diagnostic & get 20% off your first order with code GOODLIFEModsy: This month ONLY, when you go to Modsy.com, start a design project, and use the code GOODLIFE you will get 20% OFF.NetSuite: Business management software on an easy to use cloud platform. This episode we travel to a future where you can choose to turn off your ability to deceive yourself. Are you now a perfectly clear eyed genius? Or a perpetually depressed misanthrope? Maybe both?     This episode was suggested by my mom. It begins with two tales of self deception, one from Jacquelyn Gill, an assistant professor of paleo-ecology at the University of Maine and the host of a podcast about climate change called Warm Regards, and the other from Beth Duckles, a writer, researcher, ethnographer and social scientist. Then we talk to Zoë Chance, an assistant professor of marketing at the Yale School of Management and an expert on self-deception. After that, we go to therapy, and Chamin Ajjan, a clinical psychotherapist and author of Seeking Soulmate: Ditch the Dating Game and Find Real Connection explains what she does when she sees a case of self-deception in her office. And finally, Erik Vance, science journalist and author of Suggestible You: The Curious Science of Your Brain's Ability to Deceive, Transform, and Heal helps us understand what might really happen if we could truly turn off this ability to deceive ourselves.     Further reading:    Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Self Deception  The Elements of a Scientific Theory of Self-Deception  People don’t know when they’re lying to themselves  Temporal view of the costs and benefits of self-deception  The slow decay and quick revival of self-deception   DENIAL: Self-Deception, False Beliefs, and the Origins of the Human Mind   Suggestible You: The Curious Science of Your Brain's Ability to Deceive, Transform, and Heal  Seeking Soulmate: Ditch the Dating Game and Find Real Connection    Patrons are going to get a really fun bonus segment next week that didn’t quite make it into this episode. It’s about hypnosis. So if you want that, go to Patreon and sign up as a $5 donor!   Flash Forward is produced by me, Rose Eveleth. The intro music is by Asura and the outtro music is by Hussalonia. The voice from this episode’s future was provided by Cynthia Graber.
