The Fall of Patroclus and the Killing Machine. Guest: Professor Emily Wilson. The turning point of the epic occurs when Patroclus enters the battle wearing Achilles' armor to deceive the Trojans and save the Greek ships. Ignoring Achilles' warning to return quickly, Patroclus is driven by a desire for honor and continues his assault until he is stripped of his armor by Apollo and killed by Hector. This loss transforms Achilles into a terrifying "killing machine" who returns to the field for vengeance. Before re-entering the fray, his mother Thetis secures new magical armor from Hephaestus, the "tech god" of fire who works with robotic assistants. Achilles' subsequent rampage is so brutal that he violates human norms by killing unarmed suppliants and clogging the river Xanthus with so many corpses that the river god himself rises in protest. The narrative reaches its climax as Hector faces Achilles alone outside the city walls. The poem suggests that without proper burial, a spirit or psyche is doomed to wander, as seen when the spirit of Patroclus visits Achilles to plead for his funeral rites. 71890

Matthew Hoy, author of "Fact-Checking Frauds: How Fact-Checkers Distract, Deceive, and Distort Our Politics" joins Cam to discuss the problem with anti-2A politics and ideology infecting gun-related fact checks.

Can fact-checking ever recover its credibility? It's possible, author Matthew Hoy says, but we both agree it's highly unlikely. Hoy talks about his new book, Fact Checking Frauds: How Fact Checkers Distract, Deceive, and Destroy Our Politics. We discuss the origins of fact-checking, its initial promise, and its inevitable corruption – especially by the media.

The World Health Organization said 11 hantavirus cases were linked to a cruise ship, including three deaths. However, they also say only 8 of 11 were confirmed cases, and only then by assumptions derived from tests. The three deaths were not caused by the hantavirus. From Johns Hopkins to the CDC, the Hantavirus is described as one of many, with the Andes version being the only one that may be able to spread to humans in rare circumstances. Not only is this likewise unconfirmed, but in the worst case scenario the symptoms are the flu. Of those people on the cruise, the first couple who died were not classified as hanta-cases, and a third sick person had pneumonia which the WHO claims is now caused by Hanta. Meanwhile, there is a federal investigation over a coverup of COVID-19 origins which leads to reinforce the viral contagion narrative. The structure of a society is the sum of the different kinds of agency different kinds of people exercise. Here we tell a story of the rise of the current intrigue-riddled, paranoid state of the world by examining the roles played by four individuals. Each is a case study in a distinct political personality. One, Noel Field, who we will call the Idealist: a pious Quaker activist whose naivete entangled him in a plot that got a truly astonishing number of people tortured and killed. Two, C. Wright Mills, who we will call the Renegade: a motorcycle-riding sociologist whose 1956 book The Power Elite informed subsequent revolutionary movements. Three, John F. Kennedy, who we will call the Celebrity: a man who was no stranger to Dark Triad traits, but who lacked the monumental propensity for deception of his rivals in the national security establishment. Four, Allen Dulles, who we will call the Councilor: a man who lacked the charisma of true celebrity, but who ultimately succeeded in his power struggle with Kennedy. We examine how people with extreme psychologies can often outmode others because of their very rarity, enabling them to concoct strategies no one sees coming. And, using cross-species comparison, we see how psychological traits vary so massively in part because there really is no evolutionary optimum, contradicting the idea of species-typical psychology—and by extension, species-typical social structure.

How did we come to live in such an intrigue-riddled, spook-haunted world? In this two-part series, we tell a story about the ascent of the post-WWII espionage establishment, and the permanent sense of crisis and unreality it has created. We tell this story through the lens of revolutionary biology, examining a few of the different political personalities involved: the critics, the pawns, and the conspirators. We examine how ritual deception is a common instrument of domination in traditional societies, and how a very similar psychology is involved in what we call false flag operations today. We look at the truly shocking prevalence of the Dark Triad traits—Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy—in human populations, and the difficulty more empathetic and honest people have coming to terms with this reality. We do this by focusing on the story of how former CIA chief Allen Dulles, a paradigmatic case study in Machiavellianism, helped create a clandestine Nazi power structure that survived and thrived after World War Two.

We hear about the new exhibit from the vice president of exhibits and collections, Katheryn Keane.
