Send us a textIn the final sermon of the Hot Seat Model series, Pastor Eric teaches on what it looks like to help someone move across the table—from the side of false beliefs and chosen relief to the side of Jesus' story, true identity, and life in the Kingdom. He focuses on how our God-given longings often get turned into demands, and how that shift can lead us away from trust and toward control.Pastor Eric encourages the community to rely on the Holy Spirit—both in listening to God and in learning how to walk with one another. He emphasizes that helping someone isn't about fixing them but staying present, asking good questions, and pointing them back to Jesus. The sermon also includes specific ways to help people reconnect with the gospel: questions that surface what they believe, who they think they are, and what it might look like to respond to God rather than react to pain. The goal isn't just awareness—it's renewal. And that happens best in community, with the Spirit's help.Support the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. It is an invitation into the great and ongoing story of God's work in the world. Pastors Eric, Mark, Susan, Daniel, and other leaders open the Scriptures not as a collection of abstract ideas but as the living, breathing witness to God's kingdom breaking into our midst. Each episode is a call—not merely to listen, but to take part, to step forward into the life of faith with renewed vision and purpose. Week by week, the pastors and leaders explore the deep rhythms of Christian discipleship—prayer, fasting, generosity—not as isolated duties but as part of a larger, richer, and more beautiful whole. They unpack these ancient practices in light of Jesus himself, the one in whom heaven and earth have come together. But they also turn their attention to the realities of everyday life—relationships, finances, the struggles and joys of being human—demonstrating how the gospel is not merely about what we believe but about how we live as God's renewed people in the present age. In this episode, Jerónimo Mazarrasa joins to discuss how to interpret visions and insights disclosed during ayahuasca journeys more effectively. Jerónimo is Program Director at ICEERS, founder of ICEERS Academy, and creator of AyaSafety, an online course for people interested in increasing the safety of ayahuasca ceremonies. To start, Jerónimo emphasizes that answering the question of whether ayahuasca visions originate in the plant medicine itself or if these are just disclosures of one's own subconscious is actually not what's most important. Instead, he suggests that in either case, what is crucial is spending time carefully considering how one should respond to these disclosures. Jerónimo shares insights from expert facilitators on how one can best go about interpreting and responding to such experiences, suggesting that an important aspect of this process is that participants feel comfortable taking personal responsibility for whatever decisions they eventually decide to make rather than thinking of these major life changes as necessary consequences of the psychedelic experience itself. In closing, Jerónimo discusses the tension between externalization and psychologization of psychedelic experiences and why both of these can lead to issues. In this episode, you'll hear: The common experience of feeling as though the ayahuasca has communicated something to you Examples of where taking an ayahuasca vision literally can lead to problematic outcomes The “three confirmations” one should look for before making a major decision based on a psychedelic experience The metaphor of ayahuasca as a microscope How skilled ayahuasca facilitators ensure proper psychological hygiene with participants Judging the validity of potential repressed memories that seem to surface during psychedelic experiences Quotes: “The way that ayahuasca becomes useful for people, I think, is that it shows you—it amplifies and shows you—what is already inside of yourself. Now, this is very useful for certain things but one has to understand the nature of the language.” [9:23] “Facilitators should instruct their participants that one rule is that you shouldn't make any decisions during an ayahuasca ceremony—unless they are decisions related to taking yourself out of danger.” [14:42] “Ayahuasca is not a shortcut for personal development—it's just a flashlight that can help you shed some light on some darker parts of [your] issues and problems, but it is not a shortcut.” [35:47] “The main contraindication of psychedelics is not wanting to take psychedelics. You should absolutely never ever ever ever ever take psychedelics if you don't want to because it is going to be horrible. It's like a kiss—when you want it, its beautiful, intimate, gorgeous; when you don't want it, it's the most intrusive, disgusting, blech thing ever.” [50:27] Links: Jerónimo on Instagram Jerónimo on Facebook ICEERS Academy website ICEERS Academy on Instagram AyaSafety course Previous episode: Guruism and Cult Dynamics in Psychedelic Practices with Joseph Holcomb Adams Previous episode: Can Psychedelics Lead to False Beliefs? with Hugh McGovern, PhD Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
Send us a text In this episode from the Village Church's sermon podcast, Pastor Susan Cepin continues our teaching series on the Hot Seat Model. This model—crafted by her husband, Pastor Eric Cepin—is designed to help people slow down, pay attention to their emotional reactions, and begin tracing them back to the false beliefs shaping their lives. It also creates space to hear the voice of the Gospel, especially where it stands in sharp contrast to the Enemy's heavy-handed lies. Pastor Susan walks us through what it looks like to sit across from the Enemy, recognize his tactics, and stand our ground in the truth of Christ. In this episode, Hugh McGovern, PhD joins to discuss his research on the impact of psychedelics on beliefs. Dr. McGovern is a Research Fellow at the School of Medicine, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. To start, Dr. McGovern introduces the inference or predictive processing framework utilized in his paper “An Integrated theory of false insights and beliefs under psychedelics”. He explains the role of prediction in cognition, showing how insights occur when our existing perspectives are unable to make sense of our experience. In this vein, Dr. McGovern discusses how the psychedelic experience disrupts our normal modes of prediction and perception, leaving room for greater influence of environmental factors on insight production. In closing, Dr. McGovern shares ideas on further clinical directions for this research that could give guidance for helping patients more effectively integrate insight experiences. In this episode you'll hear: The research into how psychedelics can influence and change beliefs The role beliefs and insights can play in psychedelic journeys How false insights can be experimentally induced The connection between prediction errors in our cognition and insight experiences The hippocampus, memory, and psychedelics The association between insight moments and increased mental health following psychedelic experiences Quotes: “[In psychedelic experiences] your expectations are no longer helping you make sense of your current sensory experience. And so you're uniquely susceptible to environmental input under psychedelics—which would account for things like visual hallucinations [and] these novel insight moments.” [18:30] “When you have really really strong prediction errors or really really strong insight moments, they can have a disproportionately important influence on your worldview going forward.” [20:03] “Psychedelics, from a few different studies, show they can impair the formation of hippocampally dependent memories but they can perhaps even enhance the formation of cortically dependent memories. So what that means is you come out of the experience with this sense of knowing but it's in some sense lacking in details.” [29:04] Links: “An Integrated theory of false insights and beliefs under psychedelics” by Hugh McGovern et al. Send us a textIn this second installment of our podcast series on the Hot Seat Model, Pastor Eric thoughtfully explores how our primary negative emotions—fear, disgust, and surprise—often become fertile ground for cultivating false beliefs about ourselves, others, and ultimately, about God. He gently guides us through understanding how these potent emotions, when unexamined, can distort our narratives, leading us away from the truth of who God created us to be. Eric invites us into a reflective journey, encouraging listeners to uncover these hidden narratives and begin the healing process by bringing them into the compassionate presence of Jesus.Support the showThe Village Church's sermon podcast is more than just a weekly message. Why is the human brain so vulnerable to false beliefs and conspiracy theories despite evidence to the contrary? And what can be done to protect ourselves, our families, and society from our collective propensity to fall into these seductive traps? Dr. Joe Pierre, health sciences clinical professor at UCSF and a specialist in delusions and delusion-like beliefs, will be returning to the Club to discuss these issues with us. His first talk on the topic, a few years ago, was a sold-out, extremely informative success, so we asked him to return for a deeper look into the personal and societal effects of mistrust, misinformation, and motivated reasoning. Equally important, he is going to outline how we can avoid the pitfalls of acting on false beliefs, both as individuals and as a society. So if you've been puzzled by how "otherwise-intelligent" friends and relatives have fallen into the trap of a false belief, or if you're searching for a way to reach out to someone who has fallen for one, or if you're wondering how society can defend itself, join us for this event and discussion. We'll learn why "just the facts" doesn't usually work, and we'll learn how to view our ideological opponents with compassion while still vigorously defending society. In a world drowning in misinformation, we keep pointing fingers at those who create and spread false narratives. But what if the real story isn't about them — it's about us? In this recentWhoWhatWhy podcast I talk with professor Dannagal Goldthwaite Young, author of Wrong: How Media, Politics, and Identity Drive Our Appetite for Misinformation, we discover a surprising truth: Humans are naturally drawn to misinformation. It's not just about believing what we want to believe — it's about satisfying our fundamental needs for what Young calls “comprehension, control, and community,” even if that means embracing falsehoods.

Today Heather coaches her client Presli around her struggles with body image, the need for control, and the fear of judgment. Presli opens up about feeling frustrated by the perceived pressure to adhere to strict rules about her body, while others seemingly don't have similar expectations placed on them. She candidly shares her belief that smaller women have better experiences in life, attributing this to societal ideals perpetuated by the media and those around her. The discussion revolves around the deep desire to be seen and accepted, as well as the pressure to maintain a certain body image. Both Heather and Presli emphasize the need to find lasting contentment in an identity rooted in Christ, as opposed to seeking it from external sources. They explore the theme of chronic disappointment and the struggle to trust in God's plan, with the notion that having control over every aspect of life does not lead to fulfillment. The episode provides a safe space for open dialogue, addressing the dissatisfaction of being loved or accepted for superficial reasons and the impact of appearance on relationships and self-perception. Thanks for listening to Happily Even After PodcastIs it possible to rebuild trust and happiness after the devastation of betrayal? In this episode of "Happily Even After," we strip away the ten most harmful myths that often accompany infidelity, starting with the toxic notion that the victim is to blame. We shift focus to the real culprit: the insecurities and poor choices of the betrayer. Through relatable examples of well-known public figures who have endured betrayal, we emphasize that you're not alone in your experience. We further explain how coaching can be a vital tool in overcoming these false beliefs, restoring self-esteem, and fostering a path toward healing.Moving forward, we highlight the emotional hurdles and misconceptions that typically surface when trying to rebuild a marriage after an affair. From the perils of becoming a vigilant observer of your spouse's actions to the misconception that happiness is forever lost, we provide healthier alternatives and stress the importance of trusting your intuition. Forgiveness is unpacked as a crucial step—not as a pardon for the betrayal, but as a release of emotional weight. We also confront the misguided idea that remaining in an unhealthy marriage is better for the children, arguing for healthier dynamics regardless of marital status. Finally, we explore the unique nature of each situation, asserting that infidelity doesn't have to spell the end of a relationship. Author Jeff Fuhrer knows the narratives used to shape the economy, and he believes those narratives need to change. Fuhrer is an economist, and has been active in economic research for more than three decades--including the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston where he served as Director of Research, Executive Vice President, and Senior Policy Advisor. Now, Jeff is a Nonresident Fellow for the Brookings Institution and a Foundation Fellow for the Eastern Bank Foundation.rnrnIn his book, The Myth That Made Us: How False Beliefs about Racism and Meritocracy Broke Our Economy (and How to Fix It), Fuhrer explores the link between widely held but false narratives about poverty and race and poor outcomes for many in the U.S. economy. From a supposedly post-racist nation and the self-made man, Fuhrer argues that systemic racism continues to produce vastly disparate outcomes and that our brand of capitalism favors doing little to reduce disparities.rnrnIn addition to his book, he is working with a large collaborative to update the findings of the Federal Reserve's 2015 "Color of Wealth in Boston" study. Jeff also recently finished a 2-1/2 year term as a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
The K9PT Academy Podcast: Business lessons for canine rehab therapists
Let's dive deep into a personal development topic that I feel can make such a huge impact into how we operate our lives and our businesses: false beliefs. In today's world we are bombarded with information from social media, news, TV, etc... although that is not a bad thing, it can also lead towards us hearing some the same false beliefs over and over again. Technology has also helped us surround ourselves with colleagues who are online, which is great because sometimes it can feel very lonely out there as a canine rehab therapist and business owner, but we also need to be careful with what is getting discussed on those forums so we don't feel trapped by false beliefs. Listen to today's episode as we discuss: why our brain wants to keep us in the "comfort zone" allowing us to create these false beliefs we tell ourselves how to rise above false beliefs, and prove everyone (including ourselves) wrong The #1 false belief for canine rehab therapists: raising our prices and worrying about people's willingness to pay what we are worth will people spend money on rehab during harder economic times? Yes, but they will want to make sure they are getting value in return why selling a commodity or modality of treatment is not the answer how to put systems in place and develop a mindset that will lead towards a thriving and sustainable canine rehab business ... I used to be stuck, my goals felt distant, and I wasn't sure how to bridge the gap. Then, this idea kept popping up: coaching. But honestly, it felt expensive. "Is it really worth it?" I kept asking myself. In this class, I'm sharing a mindset shift that totally changed the game for me. We'll break down why calling coaching an "expense" might be holding you back. Instead, let's explore how to see coaching as an investment – an investment in yourself, your future, and your unstoppable potential. Show Notes: [02:22]#1 Coaching is not expensive, it's an investment that yields greater returns. [10:33]#2 Coaching is not about fixing weaknesses, coaching can help address weaknesses, but this is not its primary purpose. [15:09]#3 Coaching does not guarantee success. Success depends on the efforts and performance of the individual seeking it. In this episode, we explore the concept of seeking validation and advice from external sources versus finding alignment within ourselves. When we align our minds and hearts, we create what science calls coherence. Coherence is a state where our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects are harmoniously aligned, leading to a deep sense of connection with ourselves, others, and the world. From a spiritual perspective, coherence is seen as a manifestation of inner peace and balance, allowing us to access higher states of consciousness. This state has been shown to have positive effects on our physical health and mental well-being, improving immune function, sleep quality, and resilience to challenges. To achieve coherence, we can practice heart-focused breathing, cultivate positive emotions, engage in mindfulness meditation, spend time in nature, and participate in physical activity. While it takes time and practice to achieve coherence, the benefits include improved mental clarity, emotional stability, physical health, and overall well-being.

The show has talked many times about how implicit biases can affect a person without them knowing it. That means the first step a person must go through is to be able to identify the bias. Once identified, then you must take the time to work on repairing those false beliefs that have been created from those past experiences and traumas. Tune in to see Repairing False Beliefs Through a Therapist's Eyes.
In this powerful episode we discuss several deeper insights from the Zion retreat: principles of transformation of our minds and hearts, replacing false or limiting beliefs with truth, and being anchored in our true identity and self-worth. We also touch on the idea of moving with ease, not dis-ease, and to release through tai chi. We discuss the sacred breathwork meditation and the emotional releases and spiritual experiences that many of us felt. The closing circle was an outpouring of love and support for each other, and an opportunity to state our false or limiting belief, and to replace it with a statement of truth which was echoed back by all of the brothers in the circle. A truly impactful, transformative experience. *Recorded after the Zion retreat in November 2023
False narratives about post-racism and meritocracy have been used to condone egregious economic outcomes. What can we do to fix the system?
What hats do you wear? We've all heard the phrase “She wears many hats.” Maybe we've said it about ourselves or others. But do you know what is constant in this word picture about one person performing many roles? The head that the hats sit on. It's such a simple concept - we remain the same in each job we do or season we're in. But it isn't simple at all, is it? If we think of our identity as the hat rather than the person wearing the hat, we'll continually be shifting, trying to keep up. So how do we find our true identity and live in the freedom of who God created us to be? My guest this week is author and storyteller Jamie Winship.
