The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but for stepmoms? Let's be real—it's often a mix of logistical nightmares, emotional overload, and a whole lot of deep breathing. In this episode, Alicia is tackling the holiday stressors stepmoms face, straight from her Instagram broadcast channel: Stepmom Support. From co-parenting chaos to feeling like an outsider at family gatherings, we're diving into the real struggles—and how to navigate them without losing your mind (or your holiday spirit). Here's what we're covering:New Schedules, New Stress:Many stepmoms are adjusting to new schedules in new places. Whether you've moved to another state or your partner's custody schedule has shifted, trying to figure out how to make the holidays work feels like a game of Tetris no one asked to play. The Planning Problem:The holidays fly by, and stepmoms often feel like they're carrying the mental load of making it all happen. Add in the last-minute chaos from partners or co-parents who don't plan ahead, and it's no wonder so many stepmoms feel stuck trying to fit everything into an impossibly tight schedule. The Flexibility Battle:One of the biggest complaints Alicia hears? Co-parents who are unaccommodating with their time but expect stepmoms to bend over backward for theirs. And when there's an “older sibling who acts like a second mom,” the drama multiplies. Sound familiar? The Gift-Giving Comparison Game:Whether it's a competition with the ex or the kids' expectations, many stepmoms struggle with feeling like their gifts won't measure up. Alicia shares why this mindset happens and how to reframe the holiday gift game.Sibling Tensions and Partner Inaction:A stressor Alicia hears about often: having stepkids and biological kids together during the holidays when they don't get along. Worse? A partner who doesn't step up to address the tension or hurtful behavior. We'll talk about advocating for your kids, setting boundaries, and protecting your peace. The Outsider Effect with In-Laws:Many stepmoms feel like their partner's family still wishes for the “old” family dynamic, making holidays awkward or outright painful. If your in-laws treat you like a placeholder, you're not alone—and we'll talk about how to navigate those moments with grace and boundaries.Resources mentioned:Stepmom Support Broadcast ChannelFree Resource: 10 Tips to Get Through the HolidaysPodcast episode: How Your Expectations Set You Up For FailurePodcast episode: Caught in the Middle: The Truth About Dad Guilt In StepfamiliesPodcast episode: Holiday Survival Guide for Stepmoms: Self-Care Strategies That Actually WorkWant a specific topic covered? It's Christmas time, and we all have expectations this season. Some are material—what gifts are we going to receive? What experiences are we going to have? Some are relational—will we finally get engaged? Will the grandbabies be visiting? Expectations are fine as long as we manage them instead of letting them manage us. If we're not careful, unmet expectations can turn us into people we don't want to be. Who do you want to be during the holidays? In this episode, two women–Elizabeth and Mary–are going to give us an incredible, real-life, non-sugar-coated example of who we can be this holiday season. We find them in Luke chapter 1, right before the first Christmas. At their meeting, we see their mutual joy in being in each other's presence because of God's work in their lives. These women show us it's a gift to be in community without jealousy, to bless other people with our words and welcome them into our hearts. When we remember Christmas isn't about us, we find enduring joy. There's nothing better than going into this season with Jesus as Savior and Lord of our lives. It exceeds any and all of our expectations. If you'd like to go deeper in the Word, Kelly has a brand new Bible study on the book of Ruth! You can even download the first week for free. Hey, Before you fill the calendar or stress over an empty one, take some time to be intentional about what celebrating the holidays as a family is going to look like this year. You don't have to just default to what you do every year. Maybe it's time to change the traditions. Take some time to reflect what is enjoyable and what has just become a dreaded routine. And forcing everyone to participate may not be the best solution, at least not participating in the usual way. Let's have an important convo on strategizing how you spend your next few weeks with your family. Here's to less stress, less burnout, and more fun memories this holiday season! In today's episode, Jamie, Lucy, and Avery talk about how expectations come up for us in our lives. We notice that expectations can have a negative effect on our daily experiences and can impact special occasions like the holidays. We talk about how expectations can sneak up on us and threaten to “ruin” our experiences. We discuss how expectations feel in our body and some strategies we have found helping in managing our expectations. We talk about the pressure to have the “best holiday ever” and how difficult it can be when the holiday experience doesn't live up to our expectations.   Do try this at home:Be mindful of your expectations. If you are a person that often falls into the high expectations trap, pay attention to how you are feeling (especially during the holidays).Voice your expectations. Don't keep those things buried deep down inside. It may help if you reframe expectations as intentions or goals. You may find that putting words to your expectations helps to diffuse them. Keep expectations low. When you keep your expectations reasonable and reachable, it is more likely that you'll be pleasantly surprised by reaching them rather than disappointed when you don't.

In the first column, write down words/adjectives that represent what feels fun to your soul this holiday season (is it beautiful bows, tasty treats, festive music?). In a second column, write a list of all the rules, traditions and expectations associated with this time of year (delivering neighbor presents, attending parties, etc.). Cross out the second column elements that don't match up with the adjectives of the first column and soak in the joy and deliciousness of your personalized holiday plans. “If you go through and in your body, it's like, ‘I hate that! I should do that.' If your brain ever says, ‘I should do that'--cross it off. I want you to be liberal in your crossing off. And then the ones that are left, I want you to circle and put little hearts around them and I want you to just soak it in with the deliciousness that it is to you of, ‘I just love sitting under my Christmas tree and listening to instrumental music while I look at the snow.
