Zo went on a journey to one of the most dangerous neighborhoods of the 1990's - the South Central Los Angeles Crenshaw district. Though Zo wouldn't say that the place where he grew up was exactly safe, Crenshaw would make his hometown look like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Police helicopters seemed to be whirring above constantly. The sounds of police and ambulance sirens where stubbornly persistent. In this place the friends who Zo came to visit must find a way to survive: a young man bound for college, an aspiring professional football player, and a young man who just got out of prison whose highest aspiration is to see the next day and avoid of incarceration. Zo wonders if they will be able to achieve their goals or will they be eaten by the streets. Mariën schrijft het in poëtisch proza, heel intuïtief, met een bladspiegel die haar verscheurdheid weerspiegelt. “Op de eerste pagina wist je dat dit een bijzonder debuut was”, zegt auteur Peter Verhelst in de nieuwe aflevering van DS Letteren. “Je voelt onmiddellijk dat het iemand is die op iets gebroed heeft en plots de goede vorm vindt. Send a textIn deze aflevering van Soul Session gaat psycholoog Huibrecht Boluijt in gesprek met historicus en auteur Diedert de Wagt. Diedert schreef een lijvig boek naar aanleiding van zijn vijftien jaar durende onderzoek naar de waarheid en de verklaringen voor hoe de moderne geopolitieke geschiedenis zich heeft ontvouwd. Daarbij ontdekte hij een parallelle wereld van krachten, machten en strategieën die de geschiedenisboeken, en hun lezers, nooit hebben bereikt. Zo ontwaarde hij een draaiboek dat zich tot op de dag van vandaag afspeelt. Regime changes met miljoenen doden tot gevolg: volgens hem is het de destructieve uitwerking van een op macht belust Westen dat al decennialang gruweldaden weet te verkopen onder de vlag van vrede en voorspoed, waarbij media en politici de camouflage leverden. Het goede van deze tijd is volgens Diedert echter ook dat al het kwaad aan het licht komt. Daardoor lijkt het soms groter dan voorheen, maar juist daarom zijn we volgens hem dichter bij een oplossing dan ooit. De explosie van geweld ontstaat omdat de macht wankelt en reageert als een kat in het nauw. Het wordt een mooi gesprek waarin hij krachttermen niet schuwt en het kwaad ongezouten veroordeelt. Over de westerse machtswellust neemt hij geen blad voor de mond. Maar ook over zijn persoonlijke leven spreekt hij open. Hij deelt wijze woorden over hoe je staande blijft in een wereld die in brand staat. Het besef dat de wereld door hogere machten en krachten niet naar vrede maar naar ellende wordt geleid, en dat de leugen wordt verpakt in hoogdravende schijnmoraal, kan hem diep raken. Zo gaat dit gesprek niet alleen over geopolitiek, maar juist ook over gevoelige zaken die hij niet eerder openlijk deelde.
