Ondernemers hebben beter wat minder omzet, waar ze meer nettowinst van overhouden. De omzet opkrikken kan ook door veel kosten te maken, maar dan hou je aan het einde van de rit weinig of zelfs helemaal geen winst over. De winst is de opbrengsten min de kosten. Ze schitterden door hun afwezigheid: bij de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 29 oktober bleef 20% van de kiezers thuis. In buitenwijken van gemeenten als Rotterdam of Almere vond slechts 63,5% van de kiezers hun weg naar de stembus. Maar de opkomst is niet het grootste probleem, ontdekten journalist Froukje Santing en wetenschapper Floris Vermeulen. Het zijn specifieke groepen die hun stem structureel niet uitbrengen. Vooral jongeren, mensen met een migratie-achtergrond en laagopgeleiden doen aan stemverzuim. Het gevolg? Een vicieuze cirkel waarin afgehaakten niet stemmen, waardoor ze minder vertegenwoordigd worden in de politiek, waardoor ze weer minder gaan stemmen. Die politieke stembusmijding is trouwens erfelijk: jongeren die het belang van stemmen van huis uit niet meekrijgen, blijven tijdens verkiezingen zelf ook liever thuis. Gelukkig zijn er oplossingen, zien Santing en Vermeulen: vooral bij jongeren onder de 18 valt nog flinke winst te behalen. Zo nodigt een school in Almere leerlingen uit in de raadszaal, om daar strategisch te leren debatteren over compromissen en belangen. Er is hoop, maar dan moet de politiek wel meer gaan verbinden. Er waait een frisse wind door de politiek. Met een brede glimlach, positiviteit en de frase ‘het kan wel' behaalde Jetten de verkiezingsoverwinning. Zo ook Zohran Mamdani, burgemeesterskandidaat in New York. De kiezer wil vrolijkheid in plaats van negativiteit. We zijn in de ban van het woord ‘leuk', maar er hangt ook een negatieve connotatie omheen. Op ‘leuk' wordt neergekeken, leuk is in de ogen van sommigen een ‘havo-woord', aldus sociaalwetenschapper dr. Linda Duits. Van Duits verschijnt deze week het boek ‘Leuk!', een pleidooi voor plezier' waar ze dit fenomeen verder onderzocht.

D66 en het CDA gaan de komende drie weken praten onder leiding van informateurs Hans Weijer (D66) en Sybrand Buma (CDA). Dat moet een positieve agenda opleveren, waarna andere partijen aan kunnen sluiten. En zo belandt de formatie, zo hoopt verkenner Wouter Koolmees, niet direct in een impasse.
