Guy Verhofstadt is oud-premier van België, schrijver en oud-Europarlementariër. Hij was bijna tien jaar minister-president van België. Bij het Europees Parlement was hij Brexit-coördinator en voorzitter van de Brexit Steering Group. Sinds 2023 zet hij zich in voor meer Europese integratie. Eerder schreef Verhofstadt al meerdere boeken over Europa en de politiek. Zo won hij in 2007 voor het boek ‘De Verenigde Staten van Europa' de Prix du Livre Européen. De Lijn moet 35,5 miljoen euro besparen. Het is lang niet de eerste besparing, en heel wat gemeenten protesteren tegen de plannen van minister van Mobiliteit Annick De Ridder (N-VA). Kunnen de vervoerregio's die plannen nog stoppen, of zullen er hoe dan ook passagiers in de kou blijven staan? “Je treft met deze plannen vooral mensen niet anders kunnen dan de bus nemen”, duidt ook Maxime Callaert (N-VA), schepen van Mobiliteit in Sint-Niklaas. “Een buslijn die bij ons in gevaar is, heeft ook zeker een belangrijke sociale functie.” Zo lijkt de reiziger inderdaad de dupe. De vervoersregio's verdedigen dat standpunt bijna unaniem. Pittig detail: vele N-VA-burgemeesters en -schepenen zijn ook gekant tegen het voorstel van partijgenote De Ridder. Zij zet echter door om de begroting te doen kloppen, zo bleek woensdag in het Vlaams Parlement. “Je zou kunnen denken dat de modal shift, het plan om voor de helft van de verplaatsingen duurzame vervoersmiddelen te gebruiken, zo naar de achtergrond te verdwijnt”, kadert collega Yumi Demeyere. “Maar dat ontkent het kabinet van De Ridder met klem, zij focussen op investeringen in de toekomst.” Samen met collega Aria Nik Mehr bespreekt ze de plannen. De Amerikaanse president Trump moest uit zijn schulp kruipen tijdens de State of the Union. De belangrijkste speech van het jaar komt voor hem op een ongelegen moment. Zijn populariteit keldert, het Hooggerechtshof verklaarde zijn tarieven onwettig en zelfs binnen zijn eigen partij groeit de nervositeit. En dat met de tussentijdse verkiezingen in het achterhoofd. “Dit is het Gouden tijdperk van Amerika”. Zo probeerde Trump, die al maandenlang de noodkreet van het volk over de ‘affordability' of betaalbaarheid van het leven negeert, de ontevredenheid van zijn kiezers in te dijken. Trump schetste een rooskleurige en vaak haaks op de feiten staande realiteit. ­ “Zo beweert hij dat hij de prijzen van medicijnen met 300 tot 500 procent omlaag haalde. Iets 100 procent omlaag halen betekent dat het gratis is,” merkt onze Amerikakenner Steven de Foer, “500 procent omlaag, dat zou willen zeggen dat je de apotheker binnenkomt en dat je er geld op toe krijgt.” ­ Wat had Trump zoal te zeggen? Presentator Pieter van der Wielen zou ongetwijfeld wel eens een aflevering van Big Brother hebben gekeken in het najaar van 1999, maar hij was voornamelijk bezig met een heel andere stad dan Almere waar de studio van Big Brother stond: Parijs! Pieter sliep in accommodaties als Hotel Lautrec Opera, Hotel de Notre Dame en Hotel des Carmes. Carolijn Visser is schrijver. Ze reisde de hele wereld over voor haar boeken.
