An Athletic Attitude- What does it mean to be a good sport? What do we project when our kids are watching and hearing us at their sporting events. We talk about what and how we should and could be projecting onto them. Win or lose it is how you play and end the game. @bondingwithabook - Wonder-August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a severe facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, Auggie wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face. Wonder begins from Auggie's point of view, but soon switches to include the perspectives of his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These voices converge to portray a community as it struggles with differences, and challenges readers, both young and old, to wonder about the true nature of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and—ultimately—kindness. Parenting Toolbox Suggestion- Care Bags- Paper bags filled with kindness items for those less fortunate. You and your child spend time together gathering items, including a drink and a snack that your child things MUST go in it, and items that will help in the person's overall care. Place a note or sticker on the bag. Keep in the car and share it with someone in need. Everyone wins =) Need to find us on a specific platform- https://linktr.ee/MaxsMom
Dress for Success- What happens when your kids want to wear a costume on a random day. This week's adventure we talk about how "the princess" and Max have both had the moments in which they go into the world in full costume on a random day and why I think it is perfectly OK! @bondingwithabook - Sulwe is a children's fiction picture book by actress Lupita Nyong'o. It follows the story of a young girl who wishes for her dark skin to be lighter. The story is ultimately about colorism and learning to love oneself, no matter one's skin tone. Maxwell "Wendy and Wade love to play their favorite sport--Woggleball--and, like most kids, they like to win. But after a disappointing loss leaves Wendy and Wade ready to quit, they turn to their grandpa for advice. Papa tells them:"Woggles are winners, yes, that much is true. But whether you win depends upon YOU. Winning takes effort, this much you will see. What you learn from your loss can bring victory!" In Sometimes You Win--Sometimes You Learn for Kids, #1 New York Times bestselling author, coach, and motivational teacher John C. Maxwell adapts his inspiring life lessons for the youngest readers, showing kids that having the right attitude will help them turn any loss into a win." This book is a wonderful way to help children learn a growth mindset and learn from losses. Things are always as easy as they seem and even in loss, there is a lesson to be learned. Parenting Toolbox suggestion: I want to introduce you to THE STORYCRAFTERS. They are our favorite storytellers. When I say that their stories are engaging, often involve catchy tunes and you will enjoy them as much as your little one, I am not exaggerating the truth. They are a storytelling duo that does live storytelling performances but don’t worry, you don’t have to travel to experience the magic. They have downloadable CDs. We own three and are ready to purchase our 4th. Max’s Favorite CD is “More Classics with a Twist” specifically the story of “Caballito (Little Horse)” AND “A Tale for All Season” specifically “The Squash Vine”. My favorite CD is “The Yarms of Brothers Grimm” specifically the story of “The Queen Bee” and “The Goats and the Bear” but I have stories on the other CDs I love. Now, each CD is the cost of one large cup of a fancy cup of coffee with flavor but trust me it’s worth it. Now, why am I suggesting a storytellers CD. There are many benefits to children listening to stories. 1) it engages their imagination. With there being no pictures or words, kids are forced to rely on their listening and comprehension skills. 2) they are exposed to words they can’t decode independently yet. Think of it as audio reading. 3) and certainly not least, they develop the skill to sit and attend for extended periods of time. Stories range from 7 minutes to 25 minutes. Being able to sit and listen for time to a single task is a skill that will serve them well in school. Let me know what you think and how your little ones respond to it. https://store.cdbaby.com/Artist/TheStorycrafters

Welcome to Adventures in Slightly above average Parenting. I’m Max’s mom. The artist formerly known as Candice your guide into B- parenting and lessons we learn along the way. When kids are little, gender is a very big deal. It was and is no different in our house. Maximus currently, proudly identifies as a BOY. He lived up to the stereotype of a boy as well. He jumps off of everything. Sits in my lap and farts and thinks it is funny. It’s always interesting when he observes something that goes against societal “norms” and challenges his perception of gender. This week we are going on a Gender Bender down the yellow brick road. Remember YOU DESERVE THIS! @bondingwithabook Suggestions: Except when they Don't by Laura Gehl - This rhyming picture book encourages children to celebrate their individuality and lets them know that it's okay to play with whatever toys they want. Parenting Toolbox suggestion: Puzzle- Puzzles teach an array of early childhood skills that translate into the development, real and academic world. Developmentally, children are working specifically on memory, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness and orientation. Academically, they are learning problem-solving/strategic thinking. Interpersonally, they learn to set small goals. Maybe the first time they do the puzzle they look at the picture for guidance, the next time they try without the image. Or they time themselves. There are so many great skills that can be earned with $1 and a little time. Also, they are small enough to carry around and whip out when needed.
