Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen

This children's book author—Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tiger Rising, The Tale of Despereaux—describes her innate ability: “I have a knack for nothing except being filled with wonder.” I'd dispute that, as would legions of admiring readers.

A lecture given at L'Abri Fellowship in Southborough, Massachusetts. For more information, visit https://southboroughlabri.org/ by Joshua Chestnut In her 2013 book Flora and Ulysses, beloved children's author Kate DiCamillo uses a remarkable phrase to describe a certain George Buckman, calling him a man who was "very capacious of heart." This means that George's heart has become large and so is "capable of containing much joy and much sorrow." Perhaps in our moment of endless digital distraction, angry partisan politics, and perpetual anxiety, we could all use a bit of help nurturing our own hearts in becoming more capacious. This lecture will consider the life and writing of Kate DiCamillo with the hope that her writing can help us all, old and young alike, grow in our capacity to be honest about the joys and sorrows of our lives. *If you've never read any of her many books, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane or The Tale of Despereaux are great places to start! On our latest weekly roundup, Terri reports on a power outage that almost derailed her viewing of Ripley, while Catherine's daughter had a close call with a tornado. Mentioned: Unfrosted (the Jerry Seinfeld Pop-Tart movie) and the upcoming Twisters, an "update" of the 1996 movie Twister. What we're watching: Episode 3 of Ripley is called "Sommerso," which means "submerged" in Italian, so maybe you can guess what happens in that one? It taught us that blood spatters look extra-dramatic in black and white, for one thing. Episode 4, "La Dolce Vita," showed us Tom's new situation in Rome. It's not really a sweet life, but it is a double one--for now. Mentioned: TV critics Daniel Fienberg, Roxana Hadadi, and Ben Travers on the show, and particularly the ages of the actors and their characters.Catherine's library find this week is ostensibly a children's book, but we think it's aimed squarely at Gen-Xers: It's a board book called Goodnight, Girls, starring cartoon versions of TV's Golden Girls. Mentioned: A new version of Matlock, coming soon and starring Kathy Bates. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed Mother's Day (May 15, 2023), proud mom moments (May 17, 2021), and what's bugging us (May 19, 2021). The children's book about a mouse that Terri was trying to recall is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.Next week, we'll discuss the next episode of Ripley, called “Lucia,” and the first episode of Bridgerton, season 3! It's called "Out of the Shadows" and we're confident it'll be quite a contrast with Ripley. Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

In her writing, it is Kate DiCamillo's gift to make bearable the fact that joy and sorrow live so close, side by side, in life as it is (if not as we wish it to be). In this conversation, along with good measures of raucous laughter and a few tears, Kate summons us to hearts "capacious enough to contain the complexities and mysteries of ourselves and each other" — qualities these years in the life of the world call forth from all of us, young and old, with ever greater poignancy and vigor.Kate DiCamillo has written many bestselling books, beloved by children and adults in touch with their inner eight-year-old, for two decades, including Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Magician's Elephant, Flora & Ulysses, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Some of these have been turned into operas and movies. Her new books in 2024 include the middle grade novel Ferris and Orris and Timble: The Beginning. Kate DiCamillo—the author of Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Beatryce Prophecy, and many other novels—speaks with Harper's Magazine editor Christopher Beha about discovering her vocation in children's literature. DiCamillo discusses how her writing for children is shaped by a sense of responsibility toward them, and what children's literature can offer to adults. Rather than trading on double entendres and other devices that enliven children's stories for the parent reading at the bedside, DiCamillo recovers a child's sense of magic for adult readers—one that isn't displaced into a realm of fantasy. IN THE HEIGHTS COMPOSER: Lin-Manuel Miranda LYRICIST: Lin-Manuel Miranda BOOK: Quiara Alegria Hudes DIRECTOR: Thomas Kail CHOREOGRAPHER: Andy Blankenbuehler PRINCIPLE CAST: Robin De Jesus (Sonny), Mandy Gonzalez (Nina), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Usnavi),  OPENING DATE: Mar 09, 2008 CLOSING DATE: Jan 09, 2011 PERFORMANCES: 1,184 SYNOPSIS: Washington Heights, New York is the diverse environment that holds an eclectic group of citizens. Usnavi, the show's narrator and bodega manager, observes the lives of his neighbors as they begin to forge new paths in and out of the barrio.   In the Heights was the first Broadway musical to rely on rap as its primary mode of storytelling. Composer Lin Manuel Miranda first began developing the show while a student at Wesleyan University with a desire to share his perspective as a child of immigrants and emphasize a universal desire to find belonging. Devon Hunt traces In the Heights' seven year development process, collaborators Thomas Kail and Quiara Alegría Hudes, and outlines the significant cultural influences which informed the work. The musical is significant as a Latinx-authored, authentic telling of Latinx immigrant stories and its success laid the groundwork for Miranda's later artistic accomplishments. Devon Hunt is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Oklahoma State University. His areas of research include secondary musical theatre educator training and Black contributions to early 20th-century musical theatre. Selected regional acting credits: She Loves Me (SDSU), A Chorus Line (Welk Resorts Theatre), The Producers (Moonlight Amphitheatre), and the world premiere of The Tale of Despereaux (The Old Globe/PigPen Theatre). Devon holds an MFA in Musical Theatre from SDSU and an MM in piano performance from the University of Maryland. He is an Equity Membership Candidate and a proud member of the Musical Theatre Educators' Alliance. Each and every adult is a former eight-year-old, wide open with yearning and possibility; understanding exactly how troubled the adults around you are, even if they think they are hiding it from you; almost unbearably alert to the world's wonders and its dangers all at once. And that's the reason you should listen to this conversation with Kate DiCamillo, even if you've never heard of her bounty of books beloved by teachers, parents and former children who've grown up reading her. They include Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Magician's Elephant, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and Flora & Ulysses. Krista read Kate's books with her children. Then, in the early pandemic months, feeling unmoored, she cracked them open to read by herself, inspired by a piece in the New York Times by the wonderful writer of adult novels, Ann Patchett. She wrote of making her way through the Kate DiCamillo opus as one of the most satisfying literary adventures of her life — and also incredibly calming. With honesty and wisdom, laughter and tears, Kate DiCamillo makes bearable the mysterious fact that hope and heartbreak live so close, side by side, in real life. This is her gift to her readers, and to us this hour.Kate DiCamillo has written many bestselling books, beloved reading in classrooms and at bedtimes for two decades, including Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux, The Magician's Elephant, Flora & Ulysses, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. She's also the author of the Mercy Watson series. Her most recent book is The Beatryce Prophecy. She is a rare two-time winner of the Newbery Medal. This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode "Kate DiCamillo — For the Eight-Year-Old in You." School librarian Tricia Fraser shares how educators and parents can foster a love of reading in their children. Don't miss her book suggestions for all ages! Click to read the article by Tricia “When we slow down and read a book, it gives us an opportunity to think about things deeply and to use our imaginations.” “When kids have a choice of what to read, it helps them discover more of what they like.” “We want to be modeling a love of books, we want to be sharing books with them, because the goal is to have them have their own motivation to read that's internal.” “The single biggest thing that anybody - teachers and parents - can do to help kids learn to love to read is to read to them.” Battle of the Books Sources for finding books: Redeemed Reader, Read-Aloud Revival, WORLD Magazine, Triple Crown Awards, The Tome Society, Shadow Mountain Tricia's recent read: Within These Lines by Stephanie Morrill Keane's recent reads: Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett and Bo the Brave by Bethan Woollvin Christian authors with undertones of Christian worldview: Books by N. D. Wilson, The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson, The Green Ember series by S. D. Smith Book Suggestions from Tricia: Kindergarten-Grade 2: Tales That Tell the Truth by Various Authors: Bible story picture books, all illustrated by Catalina Echeverri.  Hanna's Cold Winter by Trish Marx: This is a story of trying to keep the hippos in the Budapest zoo fed all winter during WWII, based on a true story.  Mars Needs Moms! by Berkeley Breathed: I read this story at Easter as a new way of illustrating Jesus' sacrificial love for us, comparing our relationship with Him to the relationship of the little boy in the story with his mom.  Grades 3-5 The Penderwicks Series by Jeanne Birdsall: These are adventure-filled friendship stories with a lot of heart.   Inkling by Kenneth Oppel: An inkblot comes to life and the son of a famous artist has to decide whether or not to let the inkblot do his art project for him. Adventure and peril ensue.  The Dead Sea Squirrels series by Mike Nawrocki: Some Bible-era squirrels are found in the Dead Sea caverns and come back to life in the modern United States. This leads to adventures, along with lessons that the squirrels picked up from a certain preacher they heard near the Sea of Galilee. Grades 6-8 The Invisible Boy by Alyssa Hollingsworth: Modern-day slavery hiding under our noses is addressed well, for middle school audiences.  The Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan: Adventure, bows & arrows, good guys vs. bad guys, what's not to love? Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk: This beautifully written historical fiction is set in Appalachia during WWII. It deals with racism and one young girl's response to injustice in her community.  Teens Deleted by Ruth Mitchell: What if our iphones were glasses, connected directly into our brains through our ears? And then what if someone figured out how to hack our brains and delete memories? The concept is so interesting, with a lot of peril, combined with just a touch of philosophy.  You Bring the Distant Near and Forward Me Back to You by Mitali Perkins: Perkins deals with issues of immigration, race, abuse, human trafficking, and other difficult issues, without shying away from the hard stuff, but also not too graphic for students middle school and up.  Ultraviolet by R. J. Anderson: A sixteen year old wakes up in a mental institution and tries to figure out if her memories are true. Is she mentally ill? Or is something else going on? This book has a lot of twists and turns that I really enjoyed.  All-Time Favorites for Family Read-Alouds (Elementary and up): The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong    What's changing our lives: Keane: Bookmarking things more often Heather: Walks in the wintry woods Tricia: Becoming TeachBeyond team leaders in Hungary Weekly Spotlight: International Christian School of Budapest We'd love to hear from you! podcast@teachbeyond.org Podcast Website: https://teachbeyond.org/podcast  Learn about TeachBeyond: https://teachbeyond.org/

What do you get when you cross a middle-grade chapter book, an all-star cast, and an adorable mouse? 2008's The Tale of Despereaux, of course! In this rat and mouse infested "tail," we meet two human girls: Princess Pea and Miggery Sow. Their portrayals are rife with stereotypes, and contrast sharply with the well-developed rodents who serve as our protagonists. Sarah will go into the history and production of the film, and Jessica will explore the implications of implicit bias, and how assumption, especially when subconscious, affects lives. And don't forget, GAME TIME! WHAT FOOD WOULD YOUR KINGDOM HONOR, AND WHAT WOULD YOUR MAGICAL FOOD ASSISTANT LOOK LIKE? KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “The Tale of Despereaux” at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre through January 5, 2020. Text of review (audio version contains actuality from co-director Marc Bruni and other changes). Most classic fairy tales come down to us through history and the Brothers Grimm. But over the years, there have also been new fairy tales, stories that enchant younger generations, which over time will become classics in their own way. One such story was “The Tale of Despereaux” written by Kate DiCamillo and published in 2003, which went on to win a Newberry Award and was adapted into an animated film in 2007. Now, “The Tale of Despereaux,” which tells the story of a young mouse with big ears, a rat with big ideas, and a kingdom damaged by grief, has become a musical created by the Pig Pen Theatre Company, at Berkeley Rep through January 5th. In translating animated films to the stage, Disney has gone all-out with high tech special effects that could never be duplicated or even attempted in school and community theatres. Despereaux takes a different route: using theatrical tricks that have been in operation for decades, even centuries. With puppets, dolls, shadow imagery, and all sorts of theatrical legerdemain, and most importantly, the audience's imagination, The Tale of Despereaux emerges as a unique theatrical event. The seven members of Pigpen play musical instruments throughout, and the cast is augmented by John Rapson, in fine Jean Valjean voice as the rat Roscuro, Dorcas Leung as the spunky mouse Despereaux, and other actors in multiple rolesThe songs, which come in quick succession, one after another, veer toward Les Miz at one end, and country or rock at the other. The eclecticism is fun, to be sure, but it adds up to a show without a single musical voice to carry it through. And even at a brisk 90 minutes, it can feel a bit long toward the end.. That's the down side. The upside is a show for the whole family, that deals with adult concepts like grief, revenge, and most notably redemption. During a time when most of Bay Area venues are showing Ebenezer Scrooge and Jane Austin and Santa Claus, an original holiday musical about rats and mice that surprises and delights in its cleverness and humanity is a welcome relief. The Tale of Despereaux, from the Pig Pen Theatre company and co-directed by Marc Bruni, plays at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre through January 5th. For more information, you can go to berkeleyrep.org. The Tale of Despereaux is based on the Newberry winning children's book by Kate Di Camillo and the animated film released in 2008, and concerns a mouse intent on rescuing a human princess kidnapped by the castle rats. The story is adapted by the PigPen Theatre Company, who wrote the book, music and lyrics and serve as co-directors with Mark Bruni. Marc Bruni directed the hit Broadway Carole King musical, Beautiful, and before that served as assistant director on several different shows, primarily revivals, over the course of a nearly two-decade career. He discusses this latest project, along with how he came to be a director, and his work on Beautiful. The post Interview: Marc Bruni, “The Tale of Desperaux” at Berkeley Rep appeared first on KPFA.

The podcast is back from a long hiatus for (hopefully!) an all new batch of episodes. This week, we are sitting down with Lighting Designer and recent Obie Award winner Isabella Byrd. Isabella discuses with us the genesis of her design for 'The Light Shining in Buckinghamshire' and how that show helped catapult her into greater visibility. She also shares insights into her work on 'The Thanksgiving Play', 'Seascape' and 'The Tale of Despereaux'  and if she feels a paradigm shifting in regards to gender parity on creative teams. Isabella and Cory also discuss her time at Chance Magazine and the Prague Quadrennial, how to make theatre marketing photos reflect the shows better, how she learned restraint working with designers like Jane Cox and Tyler Micoleau, and the challenge for young designers to separate the drafting process from the design process. And, MONTHS later (sorry!), Corry announces the winner of the giveaway contest for Clifton Taylor's book.
