Down in the dumps? Bored? Got that blue funk? Well, that's what this podcast is for. A public anthology of fiction and non-fiction short stories with a bit of poetry thrown in, Blue Funk Podcast is here to help you shake the crud and make the doldrums feel a little less drum. Due to the current state of affairs (March 2020), new Blue Funk episodes will be available no more than daily and no less than weekly. We'll do the best we can people. We know you're bored. So, sit back and enjoy (because that's about all you can do right now).
Welcome back to blue funk podcast! I’m your host Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers across the country and beyond. With the Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by my late friend Bud Altmayer, I usually go bi-weekly with chapters, but because there was no episode last week, I’ve decided to continue on with the story. If you aren’t up to speed on Sam and the gang, I suggest heading back a few episodes to catch up. We are just getting into the meat of the story, but a lot has led up to what is happening now. If you’re right where you’re supposed to be, then…let’s get to it!Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
This week, we’re going to dive back into The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by Bud Altmayer, chapter 13 and 14. If you haven’t listened to any of the Kiwis yet, go back a few episodes to catch up. We’re about halfway through the story and I'd hate to spoil it for you. We’re just now getting into the good stuff. Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
Welcome back to Blue Funk Podcast. I’m Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers across the country and beyond. Before we get started with today’s story, I have some business to attend to. That business being an apology. For all my listeners, I’m very sorry for missing episodes. I guess you could say I caught the Blue Funk. These are discouraging times we live in. They are a bit scary too and I got a little overwhelmed. In that, I forgot the whole reason why I created Blue Funk podcast in the first place. With that being said, after I finish The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII, I’ll be taking a short break so that I can give Blue Funk Podcast a bit a makeover. For season two, the content will be more curated rather than Random. I may also separate Blue Funk and Kid’s Blue Funk into their own podcasts. You may still submit your stories. I will always accept them, but I’m going to continue to dig around in the public domain. I’m finding so many tales that are interesting…possibly forgotten. Maintaining the oral tradition of storytelling is very important to many.Today's story is a fantasy called the The Long Porter’s Tale by Lord Dunsany. For today’s story, we are diving back into The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by my late friend Bud Altmayer. We are currently on Chapter 11 and twelve. If you’re not caught up, check out our episode list where you’ll find episodes 1-10. Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
We are back with another Blue Funk Podcast Episode. I’m your host Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers across the country and beyond. This week we’re going to dive back into the public domain. I’ll be reading The Magic Kettle from the Crimson Fairy Book edited by Andrew Lange. I’m not very good at pronouncing other languages correctly and can't read the title of the book it comes from, but it's a story adapted from an old Japanese Tale. Welcome back to Blue Funk Podcast. I’m you’re host, Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers across the country and beyond. This week we are diving back into The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by Bud Altmayer.I thought I’d take a moment today to give you a bit of backstory of why I chose to read Kiwis. I starting caring for Bud back in 2012. Not going to lie, it wasn’t easy. He was stubborn and wasn’t afraid to give his opinion about anything. Often, it was in complete contradiction to what he needed, thus making it hard to care for him at times...but for some reason, Bud and I clicked. One day we were sitting around his apartment bored and he asked me if I’d be interested in reading one of his stories. I knew He had some old manuscripts in his office and I was curious, so I said yes. He suggested the Kiwis first. It didn’t take long before I was finished, and since I had a little bit of experience with writing and graphic design, I offered I help him find a way to publish it. Bud was always so confident, so it surprised me when he was reluctant. After a little bit of encouragement, we began our book publishing journey. We ended up self-publishing five of his books altogether. I realize now how little experience I had in publishing and editing books, but it made an old man happy in his final year on Earth. Welcome back to another episode of Blue Funk Podcast! I’m your host Rachel Renee and i read you stories from writers across the country and beyond. I really love the word beyond because it allows us to travel back in time and explore stories written throughout the ages…stories that may have been forgotten. This week, I bring you a story by HP Lovecraft. I don’t think we could ever forget one of the horror greats, or Call of Cthulhu or The Color Out of Space or The Mountains of Madness, but there is a lesser known story he wrote at just 14 years oldl. Today, we’ll be reading his first published story...The Beast In the Cave.Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)

We are back with another episode of Blue Funk Podcast. It hasn’t been long since I read the last public domain story and honestly I’m wanting to keep them spaced out as much as possible because I want to read stories that are current and by you, but there’s one story I’ve really been wanting to tell called The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I found this story just before going to LA Film School and it inspired an audio drama I created called Black. Click the link below to check that out! Welcome back to another Blue Funk episode…where I, Rachel Renee read you stories from around the country and beyond. This week I begin reading a book called The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by a dear friend of mine, Bud Altmayer. A big thanks to his daughter Sally Enright for allowing me to read his story on the podcast. I’m going read it roughly 2-3 chapters at a time, bi weekly. This will allow for other stories to be told in between. The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII is a story based on Bud's military experiences…in fact he would always say its 60% true and 40% fiction. If you don’t like military fiction like me…I encourage you to stick around. The military plays a big role in the story, but It plays mostly in the background…and you may be as surprised as I was.Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
Welcome back to another Kids’ Blue Funk episode! For this episode, I'll be sharing two stories. The first is THE One by six year old Trick, the first in his THE series. For the second, I'll be reading A Tale of Tontlawald from the Violet Fairy book edited by Andrew Lang. As most fairy tales, A Tale of Tontlawald is a bit more PG13, so it might be a good idea for parents to listen along with their kids to explain some of the themes and concepts presented in this story. The Violet Fairy book as well as the other fairy books in the collection (there are lots of them) are in the public domain. If would like to read more, you can check them out at the link below. Welcome to a very special episode of Blue Funk Podcast. This week is the Anniversary week of the release of Days Gone by Bend Studio. Kevin McAllister aka @vikingdad278 reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in reading A look at the other side - a series of journal entries from a character he wrote based on the world of Days Gone. The story is broken into 3 parts or journal entries and therefore will be broken into 3 different bonus episodes this week. In addition to the Bonus episodes…our regularly scheduled episode will feature The Initiation - another short story by Kevin also set in the world of Days Gone. Be sure to check out Kevin’s blog for more details and information about the #DaysGoneWeek event. There’s a lot planned for this week…interviews, live streams, a photo mode contest and so much more. He’s put his whole heart and soul into this spectacular event. You can find it at thebrokenroad.blog. Be sure to also drop by his twitter @Vikingdad278.Im always fascinated with perspective. Do you watch The Walking Dead? We follow the group of survivors and consider them the "good guys". However, if you were to "look at the other side" they may be considered the bad guys. In a post-apocalyptic world, are there truly any good guys left? What do you do to keep moving forward, and how far are you willing to go to survive? Thats what inspired this series.
