Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - This is episode 379 - Supernatural ElementsWell How are you, Mr. Poe - and waiting to begin our conversationVery tolerable, Mr. Bartley -and most eager to share our thoughts.Mr Poe - It seems that you often employ eerie and decaying settings to create an atmosphere of dread and suspense.  For example, in The Fall of the House of Usher, the crumbling mansion mirrors the psychological decay of its inhabitants. The house itself becomes a character, embodying themes of isolation and impending doom.  Your settings often include elements like dungeons, vaults, and desolate landscapes, which are staples of Gothic literature.Ah, yes, Mr. Bartley - I attempted to delve deeply into the human psyche, focusing on madness, guilt, and obsession. Stories such as The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat feature unreliable narrators whose deteriorating mental states drive the narrative. These characters' inner turmoil aligns with Gothic themes of psychological horror and moral ambiguity.  And I would like to think that my use of first-person narration intensifies the sense of unease by immersing readers in the disturbed thoughts of my protagonists.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Episode 378 -  Chilled Into StoneWell, in the previous episode Mr.Poe and I were engaged in a vigorous - don't know if that is the right word for it - a vigorous discussion about what many consider to the his best story - The Fall of the House of Usher - although to be honest, I prefer The Tell Tale Heart or possibly The Cask of Amontillado - but I better say that before Mr. Poe arrives.Greetings, Mr. BartleyOh, Hello, Mr. Poe, I didn't realize you were there.Ah, Mr. Bartley - you are certainly entitled to your opinion - such as it is.Ah, Mr Poe, I don't know what to say - don't want to offend the literary master.Ah, Mr. Bartley - sometimes the best thing to say is nothing.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession, about a young woman, Ellen, who faces a terrifying supernatural entity after her husband travels to Transylvania to conduct business with the enigmatic Count Orlok. As Orlok arrives in her town, he brings a plague of death and terror, forcing Ellen to confront the monstrous vampire and the darkness within herself. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke wanted to create a visually distinct and unsettling experience for Nosferatu, drawing inspiration from F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic, while developing his own unique look. Both he and director Robert Eggers chose a more romantic approach to the film, with a palette of blue and black. Shooting on film with candlelight and moonlight added to the haunting atmosphere. Jarin tested several lenses and the film scanning process to get the grain and color just right. He wanted Nosferatu to feel very composed and controlled. “If it feels claustrophobic, we lean into that,” he says. “How you pan, when you pan, what's the feeling of it, and how you guide the camera operator to execute that pan, all contributes to the overall feeling.” Jared has collaborated with Eggers on all of his films, beginning with the short film, The Tell Tale Heart, The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman. The two share a love of fairy tales and the golden age of illustration. As with most of their films, the two had several months to prep for Nosferatu. They talked through the scenes and shotlisted the movie, while Jarin drew small storyboard thumbnails as a draft for the storyboard artist. “I love the luxury of a long prep time,” says Jarin. “The ideas that you come up with over the course of four months, as opposed to four minutes, are much, much better, you know? Like if I'm just reacting to stuff in the moment, I'm going to go for the easiest thing. But if I have time to come up with an idea and think about how to surprise people, that's a lot more fun.” This meticulous approach extends to post-production, where Jarin even directed the lighting for visual effects. "I enjoy being an obsessive perfectionist," he admits. You can see Nosferatu in theaters and on VOD January 21. Editor - Louise Ford, ACE   NOSFERATU editor Louise Ford, ACE and writer/director Robert Eggers have reunited once again to take on the not-so-simple task of remaking FW Murnau's horror classic.  Considering "Lou's" disdain for cover songs, it was important that this film could stand on its own merits and add something new to the world of cinema.  And although she has a few supernatural/horror films to her credit, "Lou" insists she doesn't seek them out.  She's just looking for great stories to tell.  With NOSFERATU, she told one. NOSFERATU - In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control. Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU is the fourth feature film Lou has edited for Robert Eggers since their first collaboration in 2008 on his short film, The Tell-Tale Heart . She edited Eggers' The Witch , The Lighthouse , and The Northman . Other films she has edited include Don't Breathe , Wildlife , and three films with the director Cory Finley - Thoroughbreds , Bad Education , and Landscape with Invisible Hand . I doubt that you would consider the story one of my more famous works of horror and mystery, Such as The Tell Tale Heart or The Fall of the House of Usher or The Pit and the Pendulum … Yes, Mr. Bartley - this story is primarily humorous and satirical in nature. The story revolves around a man who literally loses his breath and goes through a series of absurd and increasingly outlandish situations as a result.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

This week on The Learning Curve, co-hosts Alisha Searcy of DFER and Dr. Jocelyn Chadwick interview Jeffrey Meyers, acclaimed literary biographer, about his comprehensive exploration of Edgar Allan Poe's life and work. Meyers delves into Poe's troubled early years, his struggles with abandonment and poverty, and how these shaped his dark, Gothic style. The discussion covers the themes and influences behind Poe's first poetry collection, Tamerlane and Other Poems, as well as his caustic literary criticism, which earned him the moniker “the man with the tomahawk.” Meyers explains Poe's development of detective fiction through the character C. Auguste Dupin in The Murders in the Rue Morgue, as well as the lasting significance of The Tell-Tale Heart in Gothic horror. He also explores Poe's most famous poem, The Raven, its crafting, and mythic resonance, along with The Cask of Amontillado, a revenge-driven tale that mirrors Poe's personal struggles. Meyers discusses Poe's essay The Philosophy of Composition and his belief in the “death of a beautiful woman” as a poetic ideal, analyzing Poe's relationships and what young writers can learn from his methods. Meyers also reflects on what teachers and students can appreciate about Poe's haunting genius and impact on literature. In closing, Meyers reads a passage from his book, Edgar Allan Poe: His Life and Legacy.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American writer, poet, and literary critic, whose macabre and gothic tales left an indelible mark on American literature. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Poe faced a tumultuous early life marked by the death of his parents and a strained relationship with his foster family. Despite these challenges, he pursued a career in writing, quickly gaining a reputation for his dark and imaginative works. Poe's mastery of the short story is evident in classics such as "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Fall of the House of Usher," and "The Cask of Amontillado," where he delved into themes of madness, death, and the supernatural. His poem "The Raven" (1845) brought him widespread acclaim and remains one of the most famous poems in American literature. Poe's pioneering contributions to the detective fiction genre, notably with "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," also established him as a forerunner of modern mystery writing. His life, fraught with personal and financial difficulties, ended tragically at the age of 40. Despite his struggles, Poe's innovative storytelling and atmospheric prose have secured his legacy as one of the most influential and enduring figures in literary history. This program is brought to you by DAT Freight & Analytics. As well as tapping at our deepest fears in poems such as The Raven, Poe pioneered detective fiction with his character C. Auguste Dupin in The Murders in the Rue Morgue. After his early death, a rival rushed out a biography to try to destroy Poe's reputation but he has only become more famous over the years as a cultural icon as well as an author.WithBridget Bennett Professor of American Literature and Culture at the University of LeedsErin Forbes Senior Lecturer in 19th-century African American and US Literature at the University of BristolAndTom Wright Reader in Rhetoric at the University of SussexProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list: Peter Ackroyd, Poe: A Life Cut Short (Vintage, 2009)Amy Branam Armiento and Travis Montgomery (eds.), Poe and Women: Recognition and Revision (Lehigh University Press, 2023)Joan Dayan, Fables of Mind: An Inquiry into Poe's Fiction (Oxford University Press, 1987)Erin Forbes, ‘Edgar Allan Poe in the Great Dismal Swamp' (Modern Philology, 2016)Kevin J.
