Joe Escalante's weekly toast to the business end of showbiz... This week: with the new year there's a bunch of 95 year-old stuff that passes through to Public Domain. This year, among the IP's that are now free use, is Bettie Boop! Just make sure you're using the right version... Also, despite declining numbers for the year, the box office finished strong with the best Holiday movie season to date, thanks to the new Avatar movie, and the surprise champion of the 2025 box office... Zootopia 2!!! No seriously, it beat the Minecraft movie, and everything else thrown on the big screen last year... After a brief Oscar preview, Joe talks Celebs behaving badly... This week: Will Smith has been a naughty boy, and Mickey Rourke needs rent money... can someone help a brother out???See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Have you seen the “Grinch prank” video trend? Bad parenting, yes. But also a nod to the conflicts, ancient and modern, embedded in Christmas. Contrary to what Bill O'Reilly would tell you, there has never been a “war on Christmas.” Rather, Christmas itself has always been a battleground over love, dignity, and resources. What we're really fighting over is who gets care in systems built on scarcity and extraction. On this episode of the Self-Publishing with ALLi podcast, Dan Holloway opens 2026 by looking at newly released public domain works, including titles by Agatha Christie, T. S. Sigmund, Sinfjötle, Sigurd Fafnesbane, Brynhild, Gudrun, Gunnar, Högne, Atle, Jormunrek – välkända namn i hela Väst-, Nord- och Centraleuropa under den tidiga medeltiden. Hunnerkungen Attila blev sagans Atle, frankerdrottningen Brunhild blev sagans Brynhild.Bild: Sigurd dödar Fafne. The Nutcracker: Concert Suite vs. Ballet Welcome back and Merry Christmas Eve. My girlfriend Karen and I partook in a Northcoast Christmas season tradition a week and a half ago for the very first time. And of course, my dad had a record for that. It's not a vinyl record, but a shellac album set recorded nearly 100 years ago that probably belonged to my dad's dad. And it's filled with music from a US holiday tradition. But if you've ever seen the ballet it's connected to, you'll notice plenty of music missing. I'll tell you why as we go along. In fact, this is going to be a lengthy dive into the difference between the suite and the dance. So, get ready to hear the most notable themes from a fairytale ballet as Stokowski conducts Tschaikowsky in Volume 251: A Cleveland Ballet Christmas Tradition. Merry Christmas! My dad had a couple dozen records meant just for this time of year. So I HAD to come back for a Christmas Day music show. I talked a lot in yesterday's deep dive into the music of the seasonal favorite, The Nutcracker. So we're going to do a lot of listening in this one…and thinking about Christmas dinner pasts. This four record box set is filled with lots of holiday hits and some songs I've never heard before. Its source is one of the most beloved TV hosts and orchestra conductors from my youth. So get ready to hear that effervescent music from holidays past complete with a longed-for litany of my family's favorite holiday food items in Volume 252 A Champagne Christmas. About Michael Hampton After studying jazz guitar in high school, an impromptu backstage audition for George Clinton in 1974 earned 17-year-old Michael a seat on the Parliament mothership alongside the immortal Eddie Hazel, under the name "Kidd Funkadelic". Hampton has spent the past half-century playing nearly 400 shows with the band, in 25 countries across 6 continents. Highlights include multiple appearances at world-renowned festivals like Montreux Jazz, Glastonbury, Reading, Woodstock '99, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock, and Isle of Wight, and venues like the Apollo Theater, The Fillmore, Royal Albert Hall, Madison Square Garden, The Troubadour, Red Rocks, The Beacon, and Sydney Opera House. Among Hampton's Funkadelic writing credits are group staples like "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!" and "Funk Gets Stronger", both released during the group's late-'70s/early-80s hit run. His lead guitar is also embedded in the DNA of 90s hip-hop's G-Funk movement-Dr. Dre's "Let Me Ride" samples Parliament's "Mothership Connection", Ice Cube's "Bop Gun" borrows elements of Funkadelic's "One Nation Under a Groove" Michael's latest album "Into the Public Domain" is available now on all streaming outlets. Hela kulturer gick under. Så varför just jul? Wikimedia Common, Public Domain.Klippare: Emanuel Lehtonen Hosted on Acast.
