August 2025 On 15 August 2025 the UK commemorated the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, the day on which the surrender of Japan and the end of World War Two was announced. This was a significant moment at Bletchley Park as it meant the end of almost six years of non-stop codebreaking and intelligence work. For many it also brought an abrupt halt to years of training to learn Japanese and long journeys to reach postings in India, Sri Lanka and elsewhere in preparation for the upcoming invasion of Japan itself. In this ‘It Happened Here' episode we are joined by Bletchley Park's historians Dr Tom Cheetham and Dr David Kenyon to discuss how the Japanese war ended and the part played by Bletchley Park and signals intelligence. Our thanks go to Owen Moogan and Dr Ben Thompson for voicing our historical documents. Image: Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri. One-Act Play Collections - Book 15, Part 3 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 15 Overview: Here, in our 15th collection, are 10 One-Act Plays for your enjoyment. They range from the mid-1600s to the early 1900s, from outright farce to bittersweet relationships, all short gems to make you laugh, cry, think, or all three. A one-act play is a play that has only one act and is distinct from plays that occur over several acts. One-act plays may consist of one or more scenes. The 20-40 minute play has emerged as a popular subgenre of the one-act play, especially in writing competitions. One-act plays make up the overwhelming majority of Fringe Festival shows including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The origin of the one-act play may be traced to the very beginning of recorded Western drama: in ancient Greece, Cyclops, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example. The satyr play was a farcical short work that came after a trilogy of multi-act serious drama plays. A few notable examples of one-act plays emerged before the 19th century including various versions of the Everyman play and works by Moliere and Calderon. One act plays became more common in the 19th century and is now a standard part of repertory theatre and fringe festivals.

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2025 41:50

Wikipedai, Public Domain. Hosted on Acast.

Navy Public Affairs Resources, Wikipedia, Public Domain. Bild: Einsatzgruppe mördar judar i Ivanhorod, Ukraina, 1942. Should Chip Zdarsky's promotional magazine, Zdarsky Comic News, win an Eisner at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con International ceremony? We brought the question to him directly, and as you'll hear, he rejected the whole notion of a nomination extremely quickly. Zdarsky is having a ball working on his free periodical every month. He puts tremendous time, energy, and thought into each issue. Still, as far as the category of Best Comics-Related Periodical/Journalism is concerned, he wants someone else to take home the statue, and “knows” that someone else will take home the statue. We shall see the results very soon. Zdarsky Comic News began as a lark, as most things with Chip Zdarsky do. He turned his back on social media, adamantly believing it served no positive purpose, especially when it came to promoting his comics. Zdarksy Comic News' primary mission was to inform folks in comic shops about what he was working on and give them a little chuckle in the process. Since the first issue, however, Zdarsky Comic News has become its own unique monster. The cartoonist is slowly building a staff around himself, and it's time to decide whether or not to kill the beast or let it grow into something larger and more significant. Through advertising, Zdarsky Comic News pays for itself, but it might need a little more to become the next Comics Journal, or its evil stepbrother. Shortly before the 2025 Eisner Awards, we spoke with Chip Zdarsky about his free pamphlet, and that's all we talked about, which seemed to surprise him. One-Act Play Collections - Book 13, Part 3 Title: One-Act Play Collections - Volume 13 Overview: Here, in our 13th collection, are 10 One-Act Plays for your enjoyment. They range from tales of ancient Greek sailors to a story about early 1900 moonshiners; many short gems to make you laugh, cry, think, or all three. There's an old saying in the Hollow: Leave one plate empty. Don't lock your doors during the harvest. And above all—don't watch the scarecrow. This story lives in that kind of world—where memory can be dangerous, silence is a form of safety, and the wind always seems to know your name. The Harvest of Crows is old-world horror: not sharp or violent, but ever-present. Like something just beyond the tall wheat, watching. Support the Podcast and help it grow!

Mrs Thatcher's first term in office was one of the great get out of jail events. She came into office intent on braking with the Keynesianism and social democracy of the postwar consensus. She drew on the ideas of the economists Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman (both briefly discussed in this episode), with their championing of the free-market and, in Friedman's case, of monetarism. Initially, however, things didn't go well: unemployment soared, the economy shrank and even inflation, the very issue monetarism set out to tackle shot up. She maintained, however, that she had no intention of changing tack, declaring ‘the lady's not for turning'. By 1981, she was sitting on the worst favourability ratings of any Prime Minister since records had been kept. But then the economy started to come back from recession, helped by the fact that oil began to flow from Britain's North Sea fields, inflation fell, and her ‘right-to-buy' scheme allowing tenants of council housing to buy their homes proved popular. Nothing, though, helped her as much as the behaviour of two enemies.Labour kept up its drift leftwards leading to its split, with the Social Democratic Party launched by some senior figures leaving the party, most notably Roy Jenkins. In alliance with the Liberals, they represented a dangerous splitting of the anti-Tory vote.Even more helpful for Thatcher, was the invasion of the Falkland Islands – or Islas Malvinas – launched by the Argentinian junta under General Galtieri. By responding with military force, and winning, she was able to turn herself into a victorious war leader and a hero to many in Britain. Her approval rating surged to 51%.Suddenly, from someone expected to lose the next general election, she'd become a practically unbeatable leader for it.Illustration: British paratroopers entering Port Stanley – Puerto Argentino – in the Falkland Islands – las Islas Malvinas – at the end of the war against Argentina for their possession. In Part 1 of our deep-dive conversation, I'm joined by one of the most influential visual storytellers in comics — Alex Ross. We begin with a look at Alex's current exhibit, “Heroes and Villains”, now on display at the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, Illinois. It's a stunning showcase of his iconic artwork, celebrating both the legendary figures of comics and the craftsmanship behind them. From there, we dive into Alex's work spotlighting public domain superheroes of the 1940s, and we discuss the looming creative shift coming in the 2030s, when characters like Superman and Batman may enter the public domain — and what kind of storytelling opportunities or chaos that might unlock. We also revisit Alex's graphic novel Fantastic Four: Full Circle, talk about his thoughts on the new Superman movie, and touch on his conversations with Marvel Studios creatives about the evolution of the MCU. Finally, we explore Alex's candid thoughts on the rise of AI in film and television, its potential dangers for artists, and how creators need to prepare for this rapidly changing landscape. It's a wide-ranging conversation with one of comics' true visionaries.

Nick Hobbs in conversation with David Eastaugh    https://soundcloud.com/nikolaigalen https://www.youtube.com/user/nikolaigalen/featured The Shrubs were an English rock music group, formed in 1985, releasing three albums before splitting up in 1989. Shrubs contributed Bullfighters Bones to the NME's famous C86 album. A further 12", Blackmailer followed towards the end of the year, with debut album Take Me Aside for a Midnight Harangue hitting the shops in July 1987. With the collapse of the Ron Johnson label and the indie distribution network The Cartel, several hundred copies of "Harangue" were incinerated, much to Hobbs' annoyance. Shrubs signed with the Hertfordshire-based Public Domain label for a studio/live 12", Another Age, and second and final album Vessels of the Heart, both in 1988, after which the band split. Hobbs went on to form Mecca, who toured the former Soviet Union with Nitzer Ebb and others, and subsequently Infidel, along with current Pere Ubu guitarist Keith Moliné and Nico's former drummer Graham Dowdall (a.k.a. Dids), at the same time carrying on in artist management. He carries on making music solo and with different groups under the name of Nikolai Galen.

Cold-blooded killer? Folk hero? Petty thief? Billy The Kid, who met his end on 14th July, 1881, was all of the above. His luck finally ran out in a dark bedroom in New Mexico, where his old friend, Sheriff Pat Garrett, ensured that he would be the one to live to tell the tale. Born Henry McCarty but also known by numerous aliases like William H. Bonny and Kid Antrim, ‘The Kid' was just 21 when he died, having killed at least four men. The media of the time glamorised his escapades, creating a larger-than-life persona that overshadowed the harsh reality of his actions—a series of thefts and fatal altercations driven by desperation and survival. In this episode Arion, Rebecca and Olly uncover Billy's most audacious jail escapes; marvel at his astonishing firearm skills; and consider the claims of those who have purported to be the famous outlaw long after his apparent death… Further Reading: • ‘Pat Garrett: The Truth About The Man Who Killed Billy The Kid' (Grunge, 2023): https://www.grunge.com/188477/pat-garrett-the-truth-about-the-man-who-killed-billy-the-kid/ • ‘Wild West Outlaw Billy the Kid: Who Was He Really?' Kris Lefcoe! Filmmaker! Writer! Director! Musician! Friend! Delight! More! We have a great chat! You can have a great listen! About Kris, from her website: "Kris Lefcoe (DGA) is a Canadian-American director and writer based in New York City. Her work has screened at TIFF, SXSW, Tribeca, British Film Institute, Art Basel Miami, IFC and on the Sundance Channel.

Kris is co-creator, writer and EP of “Making Plans For Nigel,” a comedy series in network development with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Mary Rohlich (“Atypical”). Lefcoe's half-hour comedy “Giving Up,” about a New York couple facing their own deadline to either ‘make it' or give up their dreams, won top prizes at Seriesfest and New York Television Festival, and just had a theatrical premiere at the Roxy Cinema in NYC. The series was executive produced by David Wain and developed with Imagine Television. In 2020, Kris made her network directing debut on the NBC comedy “Superstore.”

Pitch-black comedy “Public Domain,” Kris' audacious audience-award-winning feature debut about a surveillance-based game show, was hailed as "creepy-funny and well-acted" (Variety), and "an assured debut" (Austin Chronicle). The film premiered at SXSW and was installed at Art Basel Miami.
Lefcoe's stop motion short “Tiny Riot Project,” featuring a riot squad of corporate mascots in a violent face off with endearing anarchists, premiered at IFF Rotterdam, was installed at Galerie Tomas Schulte Berlin, Havana Biennale, and Art Basel Miami, then sold to the Sundance Channel. Her acclaimed Twilight Zone-esque short “Can I Get a Witness?” starring Scott Speedman, screened at TIFF, BFI and Anthology Film Archives.

Kris' explosive music videos have garnered numerous nominations and awards, including the Peaches smash “Boys Wanna Be Her” which has over 3 million views on YouTube.
She recently won Best Director at New York Cinefest, and Best Director and Best Comedy at Deluxe Film Festival in Rome, for the sex-robot comedy “Technical Support” starring Aparna Nancherla and Courtney Pauroso, which quickly racked up almost million views on YouTube.  As a musician, Kris performs haunting original songs at live venues around NYC on a vintage keyboard she found in the garbage. Her first solo album will be released in Fall 2025. The advance single “Booked A Room” came out in 2024 with a hallucinatory stop motion video directed by Kris that premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and just won Best Video and the Audience Award at San Luis Obispo Festival.  Kris is also a professor in the MFA Film and Television program at Stony Brook University, SUNY. In 2024 she created and launched the Post-MFA Pilot Incubator Lab to shepherd alumni into the industry. She lives with her husband and daughter in a long-forgotten borough called Manhattan."
