Though not one of Heavy D's most successful albums, 1992's Blue Funk is one of his most personal, complemented by a more prevalent street-like sound than his other releases. With production from Tony Dofat, DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Jesse West (just to name a few), Heavy D and The Boys created an LP that feels rough around the edges, while also proving the haters wrong without compromising who they were.

Are there any Conservative MPs confident of keeping their seats in next year's election? The awful poll numbers keep rolling in, along with gloomy economic headlines and a sense of a government in office, but not in power. Can the Tories pull out of their nosedive? Or is Europe's most successful vote-winning political force doomed to a defeat as spectacular as the one they handed Labour back in 2019? Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary, University of London, outlines the Tories' challenges to Phil and Roger, and how all this will shape the next decade of UK politics.Brought to you by Wigmore Associates Wealth Management Hosted on Acast. Welcome back to Blue Funk Podcast. I’m Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers across the country and beyond. Before we get started with today’s story, I have some business to attend to. That business being an apology. For all my listeners, I’m very sorry for missing episodes. I guess you could say I caught the Blue Funk. These are discouraging times we live in. They are a bit scary too and I got a little overwhelmed. In that, I forgot the whole reason why I created Blue Funk podcast in the first place. With that being said, after I finish The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII, I’ll be taking a short break so that I can give Blue Funk Podcast a bit a makeover. For season two, the content will be more curated rather than Random. I may also separate Blue Funk and Kid’s Blue Funk into their own podcasts. You may still submit your stories. I will always accept them, but I’m going to continue to dig around in the public domain. I’m finding so many tales that are interesting…possibly forgotten. Maintaining the oral tradition of storytelling is very important to many.Today's story is a fantasy called the The Long Porter’s Tale by Lord Dunsany. Welcome to another Kid’s Blue Funk Podcast episode, I’m your host Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers across the the country and beyond. Today’s episode is very, very special. I had the privilege of interviewing one of our writer’s from Blue Funk Podcast. If you guess the now seven year old Trick, then you are correct! Before we get into his interview, I’ll be sharing The third story in his “The” Series called The Three. If you would like to hear more of Trick’s stories, you can check out Kid’s Blue Funk epsidoes Vol. 2, 3 and 4. Thanks so much Trick for sharing all your amazing projects and creativity with me in the interview.Trick's YouTube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDl-vlGFOGg&list=PLb-tnhPi7WTeuxQ56p6MmF6RylRuG2jZQ&index=2&t=0sSupport the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
This week, we are diving back into The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by my late friend Bud Altmayer. I’ll be reading chapters five and six. If you haven’t been following The Kiwis, be sure to check out Episode 18 of Blue Funk for chapters 1 and 2 and Episode 20 for 3 and 4. As a reminder, Because this is a book, I’ll be reading two chapters at a time and as bi-weekly as possible so the episodes are easy to find. Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
Welcome back to another Kid’s Blue Funk Podcast episode!! I’m Rachel Renee and I read you stories from writers all across the country and beyond. This week’s episode, I have two stories for you today. The first is by the awesome 6 year old Trick! I’ll be reading the second story in his “THE” series called The Two. If you haven’t listened to the first story in the series, you can check that out in Kids’ Blue Funk Vol. 3. Our second story today is called the Day Annabelle Was Bitten By a Doodlebug by Julie Wenzlick, inspired by her granddaughter Annabelle. If you would like to find out more about Julie and other stories she’s written, you can check out her website (with parents permission and guidance of course) at www.juliewenzlick.com. Welcome back to another Blue Funk episode…where I, Rachel Renee read you stories from around the country and beyond. This week I begin reading a book called The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII by a dear friend of mine, Bud Altmayer. A big thanks to his daughter Sally Enright for allowing me to read his story on the podcast. I’m going read it roughly 2-3 chapters at a time, bi weekly. This will allow for other stories to be told in between. The Kiwis: Unsung Heroes of WWII is a story based on Bud's military experiences…in fact he would always say its 60% true and 40% fiction. If you don’t like military fiction like me…I encourage you to stick around. The military plays a big role in the story, but It plays mostly in the background…and you may be as surprised as I was.Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
Welcome back to another Kids’ Blue Funk episode! For this episode, I'll be sharing two stories. The first is THE One by six year old Trick, the first in his THE series. For the second, I'll be reading A Tale of Tontlawald from the Violet Fairy book edited by Andrew Lang. As most fairy tales, A Tale of Tontlawald is a bit more PG13, so it might be a good idea for parents to listen along with their kids to explain some of the themes and concepts presented in this story. The Violet Fairy book as well as the other fairy books in the collection (there are lots of them) are in the public domain. If would like to read more, you can check them out at the link below. Welcome back to another Kids’ Blue Funk episode…the second in the series! I hope you all are well and happy considering a lot of us are at home right now. I know things can get a little boring and a little bit funky…but I have three new stories to tell you to help brighten you day!The first is by a young writer named Trick who is 6 years old. His story is called Gadget and Herb! I have to say that after reading his story, I hope there will be more fun stories about the dynamic duo. On our twitter I will share photos he has taken of his inspiration for this story. For our second story, we have Norbert’s hat by Diedre Bootes, illustrated by Katie Bootes! This story is about a little penguin who lost his hat. As a quick note worth mentioning…this book is dedicated to children and families with autism. Finally! our last story is written by a primary school teacher, Leanne Herring. The story is called Wendy the Wonderful Worm. She had mentioned in her email to me that it was inspired by the children in her class. During this time, Leanne is also working with Mad Apple Collective, a local theatre company performing live storytelling sessions every week. If you would like to hear more stories, be sure to check them out on Facebook.Support the show (https://liberapay.com/SoundMaiden/)
The first story is a story written by my Grandmother called "Baby Bear and the Great Big Snowball." I felt it would be a great way to honor her and kick off this series. The other two stories were written by some super cool kids! One story is called "The Cat", by 7 year old Keenan and the other is "Game Over" by 9 yr old Evie Grace. Lola is to me as Sasha Fierce is to Beyonce … my alter ego! Lola is the part of me that allows me to feel the fear and do it anyway. Lola is confident and unapologetic. I couldn’t be in the entertainment business without her. The hubs and I celebrated ten years of marriage this past weekend and the day before we were due to fly to Paris to celebrate, I woke up in a blue funk. This doesn’t happen often, but more often lately as menopause and I get more acquainted. I knew I would have to snap out of this funk because I had a Motown show to do that night. I had no energy, my brain felt foggy and the idea of jollying my audience along for two hours was torture. I didn’t even have the energy to pack my sound gear in the car and drive the 45 minutes to the gig. So I begged the hubs to be my roadie, and being the wonderful man that he is, he acquiesced. We arrived at the venue but Lola hasn’t made her appearance yet, so I force a smile unto my face and I drag myself into the venue. I greet the event organizers, shake hands with the DJ and then grab a cup of coffee and leave Neal to unpacking the car and setting up my gear. After a few sips of Java, I guiltily start to help with setting up. Sound check done, guests arriving and I’m in my dressing room still in a funk. Lola, where the eff are you? I’ve got less than an hour ‘til the start of my first set and there’s no signs of Lola … just the Blue Funk. Now it’s showtime. I’m in my sparkly dress and stilettos, wig is fluffed to maximum height, and still no Lola. Just tired ole me. Now the DJ is introducing me, I am walking to the mic and there she is. It’s like I felt Lola step inside my shoes. Lola showed up and showed out with all her fierceness and confidence! Two sets and two encores later, Lola left the building but her energy was still pulsing through me. There was a pep in my step as I headed back to the dressing room to change, leaving my roadie to pack up. Lola again saved me from myself by being the part of me that is unstoppable. I am always in awe of Lola and I will always need and be thankful for her because whatever Lola wants … well, you know the rest! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gloria-miller-music/message
One of the most painful moments during heartbreak or divorce is the moment loneliness seeps in so deep that it overtakes you. Some may be strong enough to avoid sinking deep into the clinical version of it. However, all go through feeling a heavy level of dejection at some point of healing. What you are experiencing is something called depression. It is emotionally painful, mentally crippling and psychologically damaging ... should you not do things to confront, combat and overcome it. What are your triggers that lead up to being in a blue funk? I know one of my triggers is thinking life shouldn’t be this way! Another thing is when I take life too seriously, myself or others. Do you take things personally and then hang on to the hurt,...

'Asiatic cholera', which arrived in Europe in the early nineteenth century, was widely seen as Asia's revenge on Europe for the extension of European empires in the East. During the nineteenth century governments reacted first by trying to establish quarantines, then when these did not work, the 'miasmatic' theory of disease communication became dominant. Some have argued this won favour because it furthered the interests of free trade and conformed to the beliefs of liberalism. Later in the century, with the discovery of the cholera bacillus, more effective preventive measures were introduced. Cholera was spread by armies (Crimean War) and trade. It hit the urban poor hardest, and epidemics often produced popular protest, with medical officials in Russia being lynched during the epidemic of 1892. Later outbreaks have almost always been associated with the breakdown of the state through civil war (Peru) or natural disaster (Haiti). This lecture is part of the series, The Great Plagues: Epidemics in History from the MIddle Ages to the Present Day.
