Colin, Mary, and Dickon meticulously plan Colin's trip to the garden to ensure no one discovers their secret. Colin commands head gardener Mr. Roach to keep staff away. As Dickon wheels Colin through the garden door, he is overcome by the vibrant spring life and fresh air, color rushes to Colin's cheeks and he decides he will get well and live forever.Colin asks about a large dead tree (the very tree his mother fell from), but Dickon and Mary subtly distract him, and the peaceful afternoon is interrupted when Ben Weatherstaff angrily peers over the garden wall from a ladder, shouting insults at Mary for trespassingI hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Sara's plight worsens as the cook tells her that she's not allowed to have anything to eat but some bread. Ermengarde gets a care package from her aunt and brings it to the attic. She, Sara, and Becky have a party. Finally, some food! Not only that, Ram Daas sneaks over when the girls are sleeping and redecorates the attic. He would be arrested for that today, but back then, not so much. Now, Sara's got some fancy new digs. I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Mary spends the whole day in the garden with Dickon, losing all track of time. Colin is pissed. It's tantrum time. Mary ain't havin' it. She gives it right back to him. The nurse is impressed. No one ever yells at Colin. Mary demands that Colin show her the supposed “hump” on his back. Of course, there is none. With that revelation, Colin begins to change. I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. While running an errand on a cold, wet day, Sara thinks how nice it would be to find some money, buy some hot buns, and eat them all without stopping.Guess what? She finds a fourpenny piece! When she gets to the bakery to spend her new found cash, she sees a little street beggar who tells her that she hasn't had food in days. What do you think Sara will do?Later, Melchisedec is chilling, just minding his own business when the skylight opens and two people crawl through. Oh no! Could it be thieves?! No, it's just Ram Dass and a young man, the Indian gentleman's secretary.  They aren't there to steal anything, but they are there to make life better for Sara.I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. After a week of rain, and spending a ton of time with Colin, Mary is finally able to return to the secret garden. To Mary, Colin doesn't seem sick at all when he is amused or engaged in something. Although Mrs. Medlock is somewhat upset by Mary's subterfuge, she tells her that things have been a lot easier on the servants now that he has a friend. In her talks with Colin, Mary is cautious about speaking of the secret garden. She is not yet certain whether he is trustworthy.I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Sara likes to imagine what's going on in the house next door with the Indian gentleman. She figures out that he's actually an Englishman who had lived in India and went through a series of unfortunate events… having to do with some diamond mines (Kismet). The gentleman has been looking for a specific child. The next day, Mary tells Martha that she has seen the secret of Misselthwaite Manor: Colin Craven. Martha freaks out: She thinks she'll lose her job, or that Colin will throw a fit now that a stranger has seen him. Colin behaves toward Martha like some young king or lord or something; Mary compares him to a "Rajah," which is a Sanskrit term for a prince. (We have a slightly more direct way of saying it: He's a spoiled jerk). I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Sara is constantly watching the huge family near the school. Eight rich and happy kids. Oh to dream. Sara makes up stories about them. One day the boy gives her sixpence. That was embarrassing. She tries to give it back but he won't take it. So she makes a necklace out of it.Sara spends her free time (when she has any) up in the attic looking out onto the roof and into the sky. One day she's watching the sunset and sees a monkey climb onto the roof being chased by a man servant. The monkey runs to Sara's room. Now she has a monkey and a rat. I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Mary hears that quiet crying sound again, and she decides to go find it, even though it's late at night and she really shouldn't be wandering the halls. She finds a big room with a low fire and expensive furniture. There is a boy lying in bed, looking tired and annoyed. His name is Colin. They're both confused. How can they be   sure that the other isn't a ghost? How is it possible that they can both be real? Two unknown, lonely children in the same house? Sara pretty much becomes another little drudge at Miss Minchin's school, helping the kids with their lessons, running errands, and doing all sorts of other stuff. Lavinia is delighted! Has no one heard of child labor laws?! Lottie adores Sara and can't figure why she looks all shabby now. Lottie somehow gets up to Sara's room and starts crying because it's so bad. (Apparently, Lottie has also never seen a princess movie, so she doesn't know how this story is going to end.) Sara finds a new friend. Nope, not a new girl, or a bird, or anything you might want in your house. As she's getting out of the carriage one day, she sees a little dingy figure standing on the stairs, watching her. Her name is Becky and she is a servant of the house. Sara tries to befriend her, and Lavinia snottily points out that it's unseemly to hang out with servant girls. Then, Lavinia, in true Mean Girls fashion, sniffs and huffs and says that they should call Sara "Your Royal Highness” when they find out her father is investing in a diamond mine.We already don't like Lavinia, but it gets worse when she fights with Lottie, who is about a decade younger than she is. Ermengarde St. John is a very weird girl and has a decidedly weird name. She's not super smart, poor thing, and is blown away by Sara's ability to learn French.Miss Minchin isn't very nice to Ermengarde, and because of this, Sara feels the need to reach out to her. Sara is super friendly and kind, so Ermengarde decides Sara will be her best friend (not weird at all). Then, Sara meets Lottie, a little girl prone to tantrums. and constantly uses the fact that her mother is dead as a bargaining chip. It's all rainy and gloomy—not exactly the most cheerful start to Mary's new life in Yorkshire. As they drive in a horse-drawn carriage, they pass a large, barren patch of ground, no trees, no birds, no nothin'. It's the moor.  Mary takes one look at this big, empty, bleak stretch of land and decides, "I don't like it".Mary wakes up in her new home, the next morning, to the sound of Martha, the young housemaid that will be attending her. Martha is somewhat shocked that Mary can't dress herself. So, Martha breaks down and gets her dressed, letting her know, all the while, that this is not a permanent state of affairs. https://www.buzzsprout.com/1911430/episodes/19531673https://podcasts.apple.com/us/search?term=cathi%20colas%20audiobooks%20and%20high%20horse%20pressI hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Starting next week, I'm launching "Dead Author Interviews"—a new feature on the podcast where I "interview" the authors behind the Public Domain Classics we love. Our very first guest? Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, author of "Herland" and "The Yellow Wallpaper".We'll talk about:*Her background. Where she came from, her marriage, her diagnosis (from which came "The Yellow Wallpaper") all the way to her death (which was totally in line with how CPG lived her life).*Whether or not humanity is making progress after 90 years, or are we moving in the wrong direction.*Why she created an all-female society in Herland.*What she thinks modern readers still get wrong*What surprises her most in 2026And a few questions she probably never expected to answer...History. Literature. A little humor. And one very unusual interview.Join me as we bring classic authors back to life—once a month (it takes that long to get here).

The pirates push forward on their expedition and are terrified when they discover a skeleton acting as a macabre compass. As they continue to the treasure they hear a horrifying, disembodied voice singing “Fifteen men on the dead man's chest”.  They are once again shocked when they come upon the location of the buried treasure.https://www.cathicolas.com/podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1911430/episodes/19430147https://podcasts.apple.com/us/search?term=cathi%20colas%20audiobooks%20and%20high%20horse%20pressI hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. The remaining pirates, angry and frustrated over their lack of success, hold a secret council and present Long John Silver with a "Black Spot". Send us Fan MailToday, HERLAND explores social relationships, love, and sexuality—and how fundamentally different Herland's values are from the outside (patriarchal) world the men come from. This book was written in 1915, when women were largely viewed as domestic non-beings whose primary roles were marriage and motherhood. Yet Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote courageously about a world made better because women were in charge. It amazes me that 111 years later, we still haven't fully caught up to her vision.https://www.buzzsprout.com/1911430/episodes/19181592I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference.
