Mean Girls is a 2004 Teen Romantic Comedy directed by Mark Waters, Mark Waters also directed Just Like Heaven, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Freaky Friday. This movie is also written by Tina Fey and produced by Lorne Michaels. Mean Girls is the story of Cady Heron played by Lindsay Lohan. Cady was homeschooled and lived in Africa for 12 years and she is finally going to highschool for the first time… she has no idea what she is in for. Cady quickly meets the school rejects Janis Ian played by Lizzy Caplan and Damian played by Daniel Franzese. She also meets the ‘plastics' or the MEAN GIRLS, Regina George, Karen Smith and Gretchen Wieners, played by Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert respectively.  Really this movie is just the story of Cady navigating through having no experience with North American highschool and being THRUST into a friendship with Regina George… and all the comedy that comes with that. Also, Jonathan Bennett plays our love interest Aaron Samuels.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Tuesdays we wear pink! After many years of missing Oct 3, Brenna and Joe *finally* cover Mark Waters 2004's film Mean Girls and its source material, Rosalind Wiseman's parenting guide, Queen Bees & Wannabes. We've got some pretty major problems with Wiseman's 400 page tome, which relies heavily on gender binaries, barely addresses queer or racialized teens, and seems to hate girlhood?Thankfully the film is highly enjoyable. Despite being very white and featuring very 2000s language, these performances and jokes have stood the test of time. We're still trying to make fetch happen!Wanna connect with the show? Angelica Ross is ready to tell her truth. Last Tuesday, the former “American Horror Story” star took to Instagram with some less-than-flattering stories about co-star Emma Roberts. Ms. Ross singled out on-set diva behavior and even accused Emma of being transphobic. But Angelica's shade doesn't stop with Emma. On Friday, she gave a no-holds-barred interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which she claimed that “AHS” head-honcho Ryan Murphy was far from being the ally to her community that he claims to be. Sounds like a real horror show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.We're solo for the first time in a while to talk about the romantic comedy '10 Things I Hate About You', a take on William Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' updated for the 1990s and set at a Pacific Northwest high school that looks an awful lot like a castle. We discuss the film's impecccable cast, featuring a host of 90s up-and-comers including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Julia Styles, and the soon-to-be superstar Heath Ledger, who was taken far too soon. Then, we discuss the movie's place within the lineage of late-90s films, how it adheres to the rebellious sensibilities of the era, and (notably) the ways it disregards them. Finally, we talk about a recent article in The Washington Post which, coincidentally, references the film in its examination of the current proliferation of celebrity veneers, unattainable standards of beauty, and how these trends desecrate the authenticity and natural beauty that once defined the genuine sexual energy in media from decades past. Read 'Have you noticed that everyone's teeth are a little too perfect?' by Jessica M. Goldstein at The Washington Post.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

A HAUNTING IN VENICE PODCASTHas it ever crossed your mind how the engaging detective stories of Agatha Christie could be creatively adapted to a different setting and time? This is what we unravel in our latest episode where we navigate through the intriguing process of transforming Christie's Halloween Party from its original British countryside to the captivating canals of Venice, post-World War II. We are privileged to have Kenneth Branagh, the lead actor portraying the famous Poirot and the director of the film, as well as screenwriter Michael Green, who shed light on the nuances of this adaptation and their collaboration with Christie's estate and her great grandson, James Pritchard, in preserving the true essence of the story. Our journey continues as we delve deeper into the storyline and themes of the film. We discuss the suspenseful transition from a seemingly harmless séance to a gruesome murder that pulls Poirot back into the world of crime and investigations. We further dive into on-set interviews and footage, shedding light on the film's supernatural elements, Poirot's amazement at human capabilities, and the exploration of a world beyond our own. Stay tuned as we analyze the performances of our stars, Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Oppenheimer, Avengers) and Michelle Yeoh, (Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crazy Rich Asians, ) and the depths of humanity they bring forth in their characters. We also hear from Jamie Dornan (Belfast, The Fall) Tina Fey (30 Rock, Mean Girls, SNL)  Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone, True Detective) and we have clips from A Haunting in Venice.Lastly, I give this weeks Bourbon shout out to my dear friend, Michael, and bask in the nostalgic journey of music featuring the all-female rock band Fanny, the legendary Neil Diamond, and Pink Floyd's last album with the entire band intact, The Final Cut. We wrap up our episode with a tribute to sappy movies, discussing the comfort and relaxation they bring, a necessary guilty pleasure for many of us. Pour yourself a glass and join us in this insightful, entertaining, and intimate conversation.

Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom welcomes in Dana Hunter, President of the Central Bucks School District, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to tell us why a chair was thrown at a school board meeting this week. Hunter explains the situation, telling why debate elevated to a physical confrontation. Also, Hunter lays forth her district's policy on how they determine which books are allowed in libraries, responding to a heated senate hearing yesterday featuring Senator John Kennedy grilling individuals in favor of explicit books in school libraries. Then, Dom welcomes 13-year-old singer Stella Mabry, singer of new song Mean Girl, which calls out bullying in the younger generation, onto the podcast. Mabry explains why she decided to write a song about the situation she's been dealing with at school, telling of the negative social implications of bullying for teenagers. Also, Mabry tells a little about herself, explaining why she started writing music, and previews what's to come for her career moving forward.

Former contestant on The Bachelor Australia, Alisha Aitken-Radburn, saw her time in the mansion crafted by producers into what is now a common reality TV trope: "the villain edit". Nearly five years later, Alisha - who would go on to star in two subsequent seasons of Bachelor In Paradise - has written a book about the experience. And it's not what fans (and her fellow reality TV "villains") might be expecting. In an insightful conversation, Alisha explains why she decided it was time to peel back the curtain and explain how things really work behind the scenes on the popular TV franchise. She also unpacks why she felt compelled to press pause on a career in politics to look for love in front of the cameras, reveals what the response was from her colleagues in federal parliament to her reality TV persona - and opens up about how surprised she was when it was ultimately The Bachelor that "did lead me to my person”.And, in an unexpected twist, she explains why every single one of us could benefit from receiving a real-life "villain edit" of our own.You can find out more about Alisha Aitken-Radburn on Instagram at @alisha.aitkenradburn. "Darling. Could you, like, chill for a sec?" We watched "Freaky Friday" (2003) with friend of the pod Devin Lotfi and we want to get a little ear-stud right... there. Man oh man, this movie is fun! Lindsay Lohan and Queen Jamie Lee Curtis are having a blast and it shows on screen - the two are at their best in scenes with each other. We spend some time talking about the 1976 original with Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, and even the oft forgotten Disney Channel Original Movie (or DCOM if you're nasty) from 1995 with Shelley Long and Gabby Hoffman, but this Mark Waters classic is really the one that has aged like fine wine. Will we ever get a "re-quel" with Jamie Lee and Lindsay? We can only hope. Did Chad Michael Murray's career come to an all-too-abrupt halt? Maybe. Are the early-aughts fashions both great and terrible? Absolutely. Listen, Lindsay is showing that early promise everyone always talked about, Jamie Lee is swinging for the fences with her comedic choices and director Mark Waters would team up again with Linds the following year to give us the utterly homosexual classic "Mean Girls." You're welcome! Now excuse us, we have to apply a hydrating face mask - we look like the Crypt Keeper!! Mean girls are not just in the movies. Today, Diane and Elizabeth talk about bullies, in particular mean girls. Our culture tolerates a level of speech towards one another that we have never seen before, especially online. It's everywhere, from prominent leaders to our families and children. The culture our children are navigating through is tricky, and the method of killing them with kindness doesn't always work. Diane and Elizabeth share some wisdom about what to do if your daughter is facing a mean girl. What does it look like to follow Christ and also draw boundaries? How do we teach our daughters to hold space for empathy so they can see that there is a story behind each mean girl? And finally, how can we teach our daughters to forgive the mean girl or bully even if repairing the relationship isn't possible? We hope this conversation today will help you navigate the problematic relationships that your daughters will encounter at some point. When our child is suddenly being left out of their friend group, how can we help them cope without giving in to our own emotions about the situation? A member of our Facebook group writes: "My 9-year-old finally made a new group of friends this year in school, and the other day at recess they announced that they don't want to be her friend anymore. She is crushed, and while I know this is part of growing up, I don't know how to help her. I let her stay home today- to be honest, partly so she doesn't have to endure a recess with this group of girls ignoring her or worse. I know missing school is not the answer. How can I help her? " Margaret reminds this listener that she's not on the emotional roller coaster with her kid in this situation - rather, she is a neutral and safe space for her child to express their feelings about the situation. It's important to let your child feel whatever they need to about the situation without trying to "fix" them or suggesting how they might behave differently in order to gain entry back into the friend group. Remind them that they can only control how they react to the situation, and empower them to focus on other friendships, hobbies, and activities for the time being. In the meantime, watch out for signs that your child is suffering from severe bullying, such as weight loss, loss of appetite, or loss of interest in normal activities - this could mean that they need a more robust form of intervention on their behalf.
