Parenting dynamics are complicated, to say the very least. Every mother and father will leave wounds on their children, no matter how carefully (or carelessly) they parent. Today I'm sitting down with Melanie Shankle, who was generous enough to share about the wounds left by her mother as well as the healing she's found in raising a daughter of her own. Through her bestselling books and hilarious podcast, Melanie has shared her life with us for nearly two decades—from the frivolous and fun stuff to the hard and the heavy stuff. Her most recent book, Here Be Dragons, was one of the best books I've read in the last year. In true Melanie fashion, this conversation about aging well, relating to young adult kids, and breaking generational cycles is as heavy as it is light. Fresh off a flight from LA, Vogue's cover star, Amanda Seyfried is back in New York and on The Run Through to talk about award season!“I will say my favorite part … was being at the A24 party at the Chateau,” says Seyfried reflecting on the Golden Globes that happened Sunday evening.  “I was just on the couch with a bunch of people that I like and don't ever see except at award shows.” Seyfried says she was surprised when a conversation in the Golden Globes ballroom with Jennifer Lawrence was picked up by cameras. “There are still moments when I forget that people are watching it,” says Seyfried. “It was a little bit unnerving when I saw that because I just believed, I guess, stupidly that it was a private conversation.” Seyfried was a two-time nominee at the ceremony for her roles in the Testament on Ann Lee and the television series Long Bright River. With award season in full swing, she's been working closely with her stylist Elizabeth Stewart to make sure she is red carpet ready. “We've been wearing a lot of Prada and we decided to wear a Versace [to the Golden Globes], which is always trusted and beautiful and classic as well. Away from Hollywood, Seyfried's wardrobe is much more casual as she cares for 52 animals on her farm upstate. “I'll wear the big tall muck boots,” says Seyfried. “The ones you can't drive a car in 'cause your foot can't reach the pedal.” Her animals include peacocks, chickens, goats, horses, donkeys and a new rescue rabbit named Bugsy that is a bit stand-offish. “He could be 37 years-old.” says Seyfried. “ I have absolutely no idea. He's got a droopy wet eye. But he's very nice it seems.”  In The Testament of Ann Lee directed by Mona Fastvold, Seyfried plays the titular character who is credited with creating the Shaker religious community in the mid-18th century. “The Shakers worshiped through song and dance,” says Seyfried on the challenge of undertaking the role as their leader.“The singing had to be second nature.” says Seyfried on her performance. “But with singing, I've always been judging myself as I've been doing it. Even in Les Mis, I wasn't present the way I was. So I had to let go of that very early on. And the key to that was she's human and I need to feel it. It's not about how it sounds. It's about how it feels. And I need the audience to become a Shaker for two and a half hours.”While promoting the film, Seyfried's 8 year-old daughter Nina was introduced to one of her mother's earlier roles in the cult classic Mean Girls. “She said that she didn't think it was that funny,” recalls Seyfried. “but she really loved my role. That was Nina's critique of Mean Girls at age eight.”The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Adolescence is a training ground for belonging. Rosalind Wiseman (the Queen Bees and Wannabes author whose work inspired Mean Girls) names what adults forget: wanting to be part of a group isn't a character flaw, it's a deep developmental need. And the stakes aren't superficial. The way kids handle loyalty, conflict, embarrassment, betrayal, and speaking up (or staying silent) becomes muscle memory they carry into adulthood. In a world where many kids feel the “middle-class script” they were promised doesn't pay off, that longing to belong can turn into paralysis, resentment, or disengagement—and parents are left wondering when to step in, what to say, and how to be credible again. This conversation gets beautifully practical: how to respond when your child comes home with “the story” (and you weren't there), why forced kindness scripts backfire, and how real social learning happens through messy, unsupervised, multi-age play—especially outside. Wiseman makes a compelling case that overly adult-driven schedules (and even toxic youth sports) can shrink a kid's identity until it collapses under pressure, while neighborhood moments expand it: friend, helper, teammate, kid-who's-known-by-name. You'll leave with language that lowers defenses, strengthens connection, and helps your kids navigate their social world with dignity—plus a reminder that some of the best confidence-building on earth still looks like racing Big Wheels downhill and climbing trees. That voice inside your head—the one that tells you you're not good enough, that you need to be perfect, that you're a failure if you rest—she's keeping you stuck. And it's time to silence her. In this episode, we're diving deep into the seven inner critics that are holding you hostage in quasi-recovery. These voices? They're the reason you can't move forward. They're the reason you feel trapped in the exhausting cycle of trying and failing, restricting and controlling, never feeling like you're doing it right. But here's the truth: 80% of your thoughts are negative, and 95% of them are repetitive. No wonder you feel stuck. No wonder you lack motivation. No wonder you believe the lies that you'll always be this way. The good news? You can change your thoughts. And when you change your thoughts, you change your entire life. In this episode, you'll discover: What your inner critic is and how it developed in early childhood The 7 types of inner critics: Perfectionist, Inner Controller, Taskmaster, Destroyer, Underminer, Molder/People Pleaser, and Guilt Tripper Which inner critic is running the show in YOUR mind (and how to identify it) Why your inner critic isn't wrong—it's just a part of you that needs more love How to reframe your negative thoughts and shift your perspective A powerful reflection exercise to help you silence your mean girl once and for all If you're tired of feeling controlled by that voice in your head, if you're ready to stop believing the lies, and if you're done staying stuck in quasi-recovery—this episode is for you. It's time to be the boss of you. Not your eating disorder. Not your inner critic. You. KEY QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE

After “Wicked,” What Do We Want from the Musical?

The American musical is in a state of flux. Today's Broadway offerings are mostly jukebox musicals and blatant I.P. grabs; original ideas are few and far between. Meanwhile, Jon M. Chu's earnest (and lengthy) two-part adaptation of “Wicked”—an origin story for the Wicked Witch of the West that first premièred on the Great White Way over twenty years ago—has struck a chord with today's audiences. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss “Wicked” before stepping back to trace the evolution of the musical form, from the first shows to marry song and story in the nineteen-twenties to the seventies-era innovations of figures like Stephen Sondheim. Amid the massive commercial, technological, and aesthetic shifts of the last century, how has the form changed, and why has it endured? “People who don't like musicals will often criticize their artificiality,” Schwartz says. “Some things in life are so heightened . . . yet they're part of the real. Why not put them to music and have singing be part of it?”This episode originally aired on December 12, 2024.Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Wicked” (2024)“The Animals That Made It All Worth It,” by Naomi Fry (The New Yorker)“Ben Shapiro Reviews ‘Wicked' ”“Frozen” (2013)“Hair” (1979)“The Sound of Music” (1965)“Anything Goes” (1934)“Show Boat” (1927)“Oklahoma” (1943)“Mean Girls” (2017)“Hamilton” (2015)“Wicked” (2003)“A Strange Loop” (2019)“Teeth” (2024)“Kimberly Akimbo” (2021)New episodes drop every Thursday.
