In this episode, we dive into the arc of the Vain Controller, the shadowy force behind performative success, image obsession, and the illusion of perfection. Known in our Inner Villain deck as Regina George (yes, that Regina George), this archetype reveals the ways we chase validation, status, and admiration—often at the cost of authenticity and trust. We unpack:Why “people pleasing” is just one face of deeper shape-shifting strategies to stay safe and resourced. How the Vain Controller expresses in culture, including its Human Design (undefined heart/ego), Enneagram type (3), and root wound (betrayal). The burn book logic of self-sabotage: When controlling image becomes more important than truth. The connection between this archetype and narcissistic personality traits—and how healing doesn't require shame, but rather, courage to be seen. The deeper spiritual medicine of trust and redefinition of success that liberates the Inventor (the transformed form of this archetype). Why “faking good” might be the most dangerous form of self-abandonment.Plus, two Am I the Asshole case studies that illuminate the painful edge between vanity, betrayal, and the fear of losing power.Key Archetypal Stages Covered:Pinnacle Villain: The Vain Controller – The one who would burn down her own castle if it meant staying on top.Successful Antagonist: The Influencer – Bulletproof facade, all approval, no intimacy.Wounded Child: The Envious – The one who mistakes wealth and appearance for worth.Covert Form: The Compliant – Faking good, performing growth, staying hidden behind praise.Hero: The Unveiled – Naked truth. Watch the best scene reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GncsGI4_L3o Get to know the screenwriter: What is your screenplay about? Bitter is a belated coming of age story for anyone that feels like the paradigm of success has shifted. It takes the traditional geek vs bully high school sub-genre and basically turns it on its ass, focusing on WILLOW, a once-hopeful two-time valedictorian, slated for success. Now, 10 years later, she's a bitter waitress, struggling with resentment and unmet potential, all while PARKER, her high school bully, lives the good life as a prominent influencer. What genres does your screenplay fall under? Bitter is definitely a comedy. When developing this story, it felt necessary to look through a humorous lens. The plot tackles a lot of socially-relevant themes and issues we all deal with on a daily basis: comparison culture, scam-influencers, toxic personalities—things that can absolutely consume a person. So, I thought it was important to craft the story and its characters from a place of comedy. I wanted to avoid the perception of whining or lecturing, and write a story that has something to say, but also has audience wanting to listen because they're getting to laugh along the way. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? Movies have changed drastically over the last decade—some changes good, some bad, but I think a gap has been created for some of the sillier, more light-hearted comedies that can still pack a punch—that have something to say, but do it in a way to invites, not divides. I think Bitter recaptures this approach, in line with early-2000's movies like Mean Girls, Bruce Almighty, Miss Congeniality. The themes are there. The lessons are there. But so is the fun. In this episode, Rachael encounters the uncanny intelligence of the patient's unconscious. The patient, having criticised Rachael for her “messy” management of her clinical practice then adopts the same management style and surreptitiously benefits from it.  Feeling guilty, the patient has a dream revealing these dynamics but withholds her insights from Rachael. This produces a desire in Rachael to be mean and partake of the jouissance of revenge. By unpacking her own unconscious with Gill, it becomes clear to Rach that her countertransference wish is a clue to the patient's fear, which is preventing her from surrendering into the patient position.

Hate Watching Mean Girls (2024): This remake should have stopped trying to make itself happen

Hate Watching with Dan and Tony

Send us a text"Stop trying to make fetch happen" might be the most iconic line from Mean Girls, but this musical remake probably should have stopped trying to make itself happen. The 2024 Mean Girls musical adaptation presents a curious paradox: it's a movie musical with songs so abbreviated they barely register and a storyline that somehow manages to lose all the sharp edges that made the original a cultural phenomenon. Where the 2004 film brilliantly captured the brutal social ecosystem of American high schools, this remake offers a watered-down version that neither satisfies as a musical nor works as a compelling story. What's particularly frustrating is how the film squanders its potential. The Broadway musical version, which serves as the adaptation's source material, features energetic, memorable songs that effectively translate Tina Fey's razor-sharp observations into musical form. Yet the film presents these songs in truncated versions, often lasting barely over a minute before abruptly ending. The "Revenge Party" number and the Halloween costume song stand as the only fully realized musical moments, with everything else feeling like musical interludes rather than complete expressions.Character development suffers similar shortcomings. The original film showed how Katie gradually transformed into the very person she initially despised - a mean girl herself - creating a complex moral center. In this version, Katie never convincingly becomes mean, removing the crucial character arc that gave the story its emotional weight. Similarly, Janice's character loses the fascinating duality that made her simultaneously sympathetic and problematic in the original. Even Regina George, perhaps the most iconic high school villain in cinema history, lacks the calculated cruelty that made Rachel McAdams' performance so memorable.Despite these shortcomings, a few bright spots emerge. The actress playing Janice demonstrates genuine vocal talent, and occasional meta-jokes about the musical format land effectively. But these moments only highlight what might have been with more thoughtful execution. For those intrigued by the concept of Mean Girls as a musical, the Broadway soundtrack offers a far more satisfying experience than this cinematic adaptation.Have you seen both versions of Mean Girls? We'd love to hear which you preferred and why. The No More Late Fees crew welcomes back their fabulous Broadway-loving friend Timmy for a jam-packed special where glam meets drama. Feathers, chokers, and plot vs. fashion? Nothing's off-limits. And don't miss Timmy's Employee Picks that serve period piece realness and nostalgic high school chaos. In this heartfelt episode of Typology, we welcome Melanie Shankle, an Enneagram 9 with an 8 wing and author of Here Be Dragons: Treading the Deep Waters of Motherhood, Mean Girls, and Generational Trauma.
