In the winter of 1990, a small Bulgarian village became the site of a secretive military operation known as "Operation Sunray." One of the icons of classic western movies is the sunset. Even in black and white, rays of sunlight radiate into the sky like jets of water erupting from a fountain. They add a bit of grandeur to any sunrise or sunset. They're known as crepuscular rays, from the Latin word for twilight. Technically, the name applies to rays that appear during morning or evening twilight, while the Sun is below the horizon. In modern usage, though, it applies to rays of sunlight shining from behind clouds or other obstacles at any time of day. The bright rays alternate with darker shadow bands, where clouds or mountains block some of the sunlight. The rays appear to radiate in all directions. But that's an illusion. All of the rays are parallel. They appear to converge on the Sun because of perspective. It's like looking down a set of railroad tracks. The tracks appear to converge as you look farther away, even though they're the same distance apart. In the case of crepuscular rays, they all converge at the Sun. We see the rays because they scatter off small particles in the atmosphere, such as grains of dust or pollen. The rays usually look yellow or orange, and for the same reason the twilight sky shows those colors: Air molecules scatter most or all of the blue light, leaving the redder wavelengths to shine through — adding some golden rays to any sunrise or sunset. This week in the studio my guest had yearned to be a Royal Marine Commando since childhood, and in 1986 he enlisted and did just that. After passing the grueling training course my guest earned his coveted Green Beret in 1987, but that's where the real story begins. My guest spent the next 30 years of his life on Active Duty serving in every rank from Recruit to Captain in the Royal Marines. He has participated in combat rotations to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and was in the lead element in the invasion of Iraq. After Active Duty this guest transitioned into the reserves but at the same time completed a degree in acting and has been featured on stage and screen in roles that were designed to spotlight mental health and PTS in former and active soldiers. His latest endeavor is an absolutely incredible film called SUNRAY which was created by a collection of former Royal Marine Commandos turned filmmakers and actors. This movie challenges the perception of mental health and the struggles that soldiers face when reintegrating back into civilian life. Every piece of plastic you've ever used still exists somewhere on the planet, from the ziplock bag of leftovers to the bag of chips to the packaging holding in all the grapes you picked up at the store. We used to ship all of our plastic waste to China, but in 2017 they stopped taking it, so the vast majority of our plastic, including what we put in the recycling bin, at the very best just ends up in a landfill, and at the worst ends up in the ocean.  Enter TIPA, an Israeli startup promising to revolutionize plastic packaging by making it fully compostable. That means you could take the bag your grapes come in and just put it in your backyard compost. That's a big deal, because a lot of packaging labeled “compostable” is actually only compostable under industrial composting conditions which are much higher heat than what you'd typically get in a home composting system or if the product ends up in nature. TIPA's already raised $130 million USD in venture capital funding, employs more than 60 people in Israel, the US, and Europe, has developed numerous plastic replacement products that are now sold on several continents, recently acquired another startup in the space, and is working feverishly scale further so they can turn off the faucet of plastic pollution humanity is dumping into our environment every year. TIPA is Hebrew for “droplet,” and in this conversation with TIPA's founder and CEO, Daphna Nissenbaum, we chat about her journey from a software engineer to a plastic revolutionary, what the difference between biodegradable and compostable is, what her alt-plastic is actually made of, and more. Most entrepreneurs dream of having the success Daphna's had so far in terms of fundraising and product launches, so it was fun to hear her story. Previously, she held various management positions at SPL World Group Ltd, a provider of revenue and operations management software, prior to which she held the position of project manager at Whelty Lager Ltd., located in Boston MA, USA. Daphna holds an MBA specializing in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from IDC Herzliya (graduated with honors) and a BA in Economics and Software Engineering from Bar Ilan University. She graduated the elite Israel Defense Forces software engineering program (Mamram) and served in the Israeli Navy software unit as an officer (ranked Captain). Today, Daphna is leading the TIPA® team in the movement to revolutionize packaging systems and rid the world of plastic pollution. On December 6, 1990, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense began digging a hole in the tiny town of Tsarichina. Tonight, we'll read the opening to “The Dream” a 1924 novel by H. G. Wells about a man from a Utopian future who dreams the entire life of a 19th century Englishman named Harry Mortimer Smith. In circa 4,000 A.D., a biologist named Sarnac is taking a holiday among mountains and lakes with his lover, Sunray. With four other holiday travellers, they visit some 2,000-year-old "ancient remains that had recently been excavated" in a nearby valley. A little later, after a brief afternoon nap, Sarnac awakens from "a very vivid dream." The rest of the novel consists of Sarnac's recounting of the dream, with occasional discussion of its particulars with his companions.
