On this episode Sarah has a conversation with Walt Patrick, the steward of Herland Forest in Washington State, a natural burial ground and licensed human composting facility, (also called natural organic reduction) and Elizabeth Fournier, a progressive funeral director and author of the The Green Burial Guidebook, who often works with Walt. Today they share with us what a “laying in” ceremony for a natural organic reduction entails at Herland Forest. “Laying in” is the first part of the process, literally placing the body in the composting cradle.https://www.herlandforest.org/Support the show
Herland is a utopian novel written in 1915 by American feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It describes a society of women who bear children without men, an ideal social order free of war, conflict, and domination. It was first published in monthly installments in 1915 in a magazine edited and written by Gilman. It was followed by its sequel, With Her in Ourland and is considered to be the middle volume in her trilogy, preceded by Moving the Mountain (1911). It was not published in book form until 1979. Gilman is also author of "The Yellow Wallpaper." Special thanks to writer Slim Russell for recommending Herland for "Read Me to Sleep, Ricky," the podcast hosted by Rick Whitaker. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rick-whitaker/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rick-whitaker/supportSupport the show
In light of the pending rollback of abortion rights by the US Supreme Court's conservative majority, Stefanie Schäfer and her guest Judith Rauscher turn to a world without men--as imagined in literary texts from the turn of the 20th century. Reading feminist utopias such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland (1915) and Mary E. Bardley's Mizora. A Prohpecy (1880/9), they discuss literary representations of an ideal same-sex state, whiteness, beauty standards, and the interlacing of progressivism and conservative views of womanhood in the US at a time when women fought for suffrage and civic equality.

Melkorka Gunborg Briansdóttir fer með okkur rúm 100 ár aftur í tímann og rifjar upp skáldsögunna Herland eftir Charlotte Perkins Gilman sem kom upphaflega út sem framhaldssaga í tímaritinu The Forerunner. Sagan er feminísk útópía sem fylgir þremur karlmönnum sem ferðast á frumbyggjaslóðum og finna þar hið ógnvænlega og dularfulla landa kvenna. Undir lok þáttar leggjum við leið okkar niður í bæ. Í Bókabúðum máls og menningar á laugavegi fór á dögunum fram útgáfuhóf bókarinnar Guð leitar að Salóme eftir rithöfundinn Júlíu Margréti Einarssdóttur. Cori Simon (Assistant Professor, University of Oklahoma) speaks with Sarah Eppler Janda (Professor, Cameron University) and Patricia Loughlin (Professor, University of Central Oklahoma) about their new edited volume, This Land is Herland: Gendered Activism in Oklahoma from the 1870s to the 2010s (University of Oklahoma Press, 2021). This collection of essays documents the impact of women activists on the history of tribal nations and the state of Oklahoma, and is the first book in a new series “Women and the American West,” at the University of Oklahoma Press. The chapters showcase the stories and strategies of thirteen individuals, including Indigenous, Black, and white women, who strived to transform their communities through political, economic, or civil action. Progressive reformer Kate Bernard, civil rights activist Clara Luper, or Comanche leader LaDonna Harris might be known to some readers. But contributors highlight less-famous Oklahomans as well: including Cherokee historian and educator Rachel Caroline Eaton, NAACP organizer California M. Taylor, and Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) advocate Wanda Jo Peltier Stapleton. In this conversation, we learn about how the editors—colleagues and friends—conceived of the volume, recruited contributions from scholars at all stages of their careers, and modified the plan in response to feedback from contributors, colleagues, students, and readers. They provide an orientation to the volume's structure and briefly discuss each chapter before turning to reflect on how the history of women in Oklahoma intersects with broad national and global political movements for racial justice, gender equality, and sovereignty. Maggie and Harmony delve into the seminal feminist text, Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. They discuss plenty of lighthearted topics like Eugenics and white lady racism, abortion, and sexual assault. They also try to dissect the need and place of texts such as Herland despite their problematic aspects. In her new book New Left Tyranny (Christian Publishing House, 2020), Hanne Herland argues that the neo-Marxist New Left has turned their back on historical Western principles and became a destructive authoritarian force. According to Herland, it has abandoned the working class. By systematically attacking traditional values and inciting Identity Politics, Herland argues, the New Left has created a dysfunctional society characterized by social anarchy, selfishness, and a lack of personal responsibility. Anne Applebaum's new book The Twilight of Democracy has the subtitle The failure of democracy and the parting of friends. She talks to Anne McElvoy about what happened when she tried to connect up with past friends whose politics are now different to her own. The American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman is most famous now for her short story The Yellow Wallpaper. Will Abberley tells us about her view of fashion and why women should not seek to stand out because a focus on their appearance was counterproductive to them gaining more public power. Gilman conjured a female utopia in her 1915 book Herland. And 2020 New Generation Thinker Sophie Oliver from the University of Liverpool writes us a postcard about the actress Ingrid Bergman and the way she and her would-be biographer Bessie Breuer tried to carve out a different public image for a female star in a novel Breuer published in 1957 called The Actress. On this episode, Host and Online Mediation Expert, Susan Guthrie is joined by veteran Workers' Compensation Mediator, Elliot Herland who describes his journey from online mediation novice to seasoned veteran of ODR and the many ways going online has been a "joy-generator" for him. For many mediators, arbitrators and advocates, the recent disruption of their established practices, due to the constraints imposed by the COVID quarantine, has brought fear and dismay into their world. The inability to continue to meet with clients and participants in person to conduct dispute resolution proceedings left many with the feeling that they were forced to consider moving online. That is not to say that they were excited by the idea. In fact, most reported being worried they would lose the personal touch, that the tech was too hard and frankly, that they would look less than in charge of their proceeding. Elliot Herland, a successful mediator and arbitrator since 1997 felt much the same as he faced the need to conduct his mediations online. There was much to learn and and the timeline was short as people realized that COVID would not be a momentary disruption. Although Elliot at first was leery of the new platform, he soon realized that there were benefits to the online medium and he was still helping people to resolve their disputes, much as he had in person. In fact, he now describes online mediation as one of his "joy-generators" and encourages other practitioners and attorneys to consider giving online mediation a try! Hear some of Elliot's tips and insights from his journe from fear to ODR Adopter in this episode of the Learn to Mediate Online Podcast! This lecture examines the work of Hugo de Vries, a Dutch botanist who was one of the first to claim that science would allow plants and animals to be designed to order. It also looks at the early twentieth-century 'Station for Experimental Evolution' in New York, and at the utopian vision of Charlotte Gilman Perkins' Herland (1915), a novel describing a lost world populated by women that took the form of a perfect garden, whose wonderful plants and lack of men were both explained by de Vries' theory of mutation.A lecture by Jim Endersby 10 FebruaryThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/making-new-plantsGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. What have all of the utopias we've covered so far had in common? They were all largely driven by the will and power of a charismatic leader - usually a man, usually white. How do you build a utopia, then, for people in society who really need it? In our season finale, we visit worlds where there are no men. In fiction, and real life. When it comes to tackling gender as a subject in science fiction and fantasy, one approach has been to sort everybody out into single-gender societies. Whether we're talking about one of the earliest progenators of this approach, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "Herland," or the kinds of worlds second-wave feminists built in "Gate to Women's Country," "Handmaid's Tale," and "Left Hand of Darkness," or perhaps even the weird gender-bending works by writers working in science fiction and fantasy today, such as "The Stars Are Legion" and "Ancillary Justice" and "Lumberjanes" and many others—no matter who we're talking about, there's much to be said. Join us for a tour of the three (or more?) stages of single-gender utopias and arguments about Alderman, Atwood, Gilman, Hurley, Leckie, Le Guin, Russ, Tepper, Tiptree, and ... Wonder Woman? Yeah, Wonder Woman! Questions are our forté: Who is writing these stories and who gets permission to make big science fictional or fantastical statements about the relationship between gender and society? What expectations and assumptions does a single-gender utopia lay bare? What happens when you take a binary understanding of gender *out* of the equation? And also, where are all the not-white people? Single-gender utopias seem to have some blind spots. We put big question marks around the words "gender" and "utopia" as we dig into this legacy novum of our favorite genres/modes/cats—so be forewarned, this episode gets very queer. In 1915 women could neither vote, divorce nor work after marriage, yet in that same year the American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman envisaged a revolutionary world populated entirely by women who were intelligent, resourceful and brave. Her great science fiction novel Herland tells the story of three men who crash land on an island where the men have died out; women reproduce by parthenogenesis. Until Gilman's book was published, most visions of utopia, though turning the world on its head, struggled to envisage a place where gender had changed. Fantastical machines could be imagined alongside marvellous advances in medicine and technology, but the idea of woman functioning fully in the new utopias was too much for many to imagine. In this programme the award winning science fiction writer Geoff Ryman uses Herland as a starting point to ask why it's been so had to imagine a world where gender dissolves. In the course of the programme he will write his own short story, avoiding the pitfalls that have skewered many before him. The story No Point Talking is included in the podcast. Presenter: Geoff Ryman Producer: Nicola Swords Contributors: Stephanie Saulter, author of the Evolution Trilogy; Laurie Penny, writer and journalist; Dr Sari Edelstein, The President of the Charlotte Perkins Gilman Society; Sarah Le Fanu, former Senior Editor at The Women's Press; Dr Caitríona Ní Dhúill, author of Sex and Imagined Spaces; Sarah Hall, author of The Carhullan Army and The Wolf Border Original music composed by Scanner.
