Singapore is one of the most densely populated places on Earth, and one of the most liveable. But as the city continues to grow, can it stay that way? In this wide-ranging edition of Viewpoint, Second Minister for National Development Indranee Rajah joins Lynlee Foo to discuss how Singapore is planning for an increasingly uncertain future. From climate resilience and energy security to the next generation of regional centres such as Jurong Lake District and Long Island, the conversation explores what it will take to keep Singapore liveable, resilient and competitive in the decades ahead. Along the way, she explains why Singapore gave up prime CBD land for Gardens by the Bay — so the city could "breathe."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Singapore's total fertility rate has hit a historic low. But this conversation was never really about birth rates. It was about what modern life actually feels like for many Singaporeans today. The pressure. The exhaustion. The invisible weight of always having to keep up. And the quiet calculation so many people are running; about whether building a family here is something they can imagine, afford, or want. Minister Indranee Rajah leads Singapore's Marriage and Parenthood Reset. She is also single. And she has no children of her own. In this conversation, we go beyond policy. We talk about: - The invisible mental load women carry that no support system fully removes - The pressure parents feel before a child is even born - and why it starts earlier than most people realise - The women who have built lives they genuinely love - and aren't sure they want to give that up - What the public reaction to the word "detour" was really saying - What it means to lead this conversation as a single woman without children - The family she lost - and why their absence shaped her understanding of family itself - Whether modern Singaporean life still feels emotionally sustainable enough to build a family within Chapters 00:00:00 Minister Indranee Rajah: The Minister Tasked With Singapore's Future 00:02:50 Growing Up Between Two Cultures & Faiths 00:05:59 Her Mother's Greatest Gift 00:06:57 How Her Legal Mindset Shapes Singapore's Toughest Conversation 00:10:21 Why Singaporeans Are Rejecting the Life Script — Not Family 00:14:36 The Overachievement Culture That Made Good Enough Feel Like Failure 00:17:14 The Growing Pressure of Raising Kids in Singapore 00:21:08 The Invisible Mental Load Women Carry 00:22:31 The Woman Who Hid Her Fertility Treatment From Her Boss 00:23:37 Addressing Singaporean Work Culture & Fertility Stigma 00:29:56 Why Singaporeans Are Choosing Their Quality of Life Over Parenthood 00:32:07 The “Detour” Comment That Sparked Debate 00:35:37 Leading Singapore's Parenthood Conversation as a Single Woman 00:38:10 Why Baby Bonuses Don't Apply to Unwed Mothers 00:41:43 Why She's Doing This — Even When Everyone Says It's Impossible 00:44:47 What Makes Her Believe Singapore Can Change Follow Rachel here:  https://www.instagram.com/ms_rach/ Follow Minister Indranee here: https://www.instagram.com/indraneerajah/ Download the FSS fertility workplace support guide here: https://fertilitysupport.sg/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/FSS-workplace-support-guide.pdf Write in to the team at hello@rachreflects.com.

There was a time when your neighbor knew your name, your grandmother's friend's son could check you, and the whole block had some say in how you turned out. Now? People wave and go inside. So what happened? In this episode of Talking Brown Sugar, Rajah and Angela trace the shift from community-deep living to hyperlocalized, mind-your-business culture and ask whether we gained peace or lost something we can't get back.Angela remembers growing up in New York where the neighbors watched you, and North Carolina where the whole street was in your business and told on you. Rajah connects the dots between 9/11, the Patriot Act, social media, and why people started retreating into digital bubbles and what that's cost us in real-world community. They talk about third spaces disappearing (malls, bookstores, libraries), the way social media has wired us to see more negative than positive, and what healthy community actually looks like now neighborhood apps, town halls, holding the HOA accountable.

Respect was everything in many households growing up. But was it actually respect, or was it fear wearing respect's clothes? In this episode of Talking Brown Sugar, Rajah and Angela get honest about how respect was defined in their home, what role fear played in how kids behaved, and how those early lessons show up in adult relationships decades later.Angela shares how her household ran on mutual respect — you give it, you get it — and why she always told her kids not to fear anyone on earth but God. Rajah reflects on how her biggest fear wasn't punishment, it was disappointing her mother and why that distinction matters more than people realize. They also get into the long-term damage that fear-based parenting can do: adults who overthink, can't trust, can't make decisions and elderly parents who become fearful of the adult children they never truly connected withEmail us: Talkingbrown.surgar@gmail.com

Customer service used to feel personal. Now it feels like a transaction nobody wants to be part of. In this episode of Talking Brown Sugar, Rajah and her mom Angela break down what customer service used to look like genuine, warm, full of personality and why it's hitting so different now. They get into the real reasons behind the shift: AI threatening jobs, wages that haven't kept up with the cost of living, and customers who are just as stressed as the people serving them. Rajah asks the big question: is the customer always right? And they both land in the same place: absolutely not. Then Angela drops the story of the moment. A restaurant. A bowl of grits. A cook who doesn't eat his own food. And a lump that came out of the bowl whole. What does rest really look like? And have Black women ever truly been allowed to have it? In this episode, Rajah and her mom Angela get real about what "soft life" and survival mode looked like across two generations. Angela shares how softness in her childhood meant having people who held things down for her and how that changed when it became her turn to hold things down. Rajah talks about reclaiming softness as an adult through trust in her own ability to create and attract what she needs. Together they unpack why rest has to be scheduled now, why Black women are still expected to be everything for everyone, and what a "better life" actually means when the economics, the culture, and the definition keep shifting. Will and Trey break down why this version feels grittier than Netflix's attempt, what makes each driver's story compelling, and why Rajah's journey from iRacing kid to rising NASCAR talent really matters—on and off the track. They also get candid about race, fan reactions, and how Black drivers are treated in a traditionally white sport, including the incident that appears in the series preview. From there, the conversation shifts to the future of NASCAR hardware and talent. The crew dives into Dodge's return to the Truck Series, the multi-truck effort being built, and the intriguing “all-star truck” concept that could rotate young guns, short-track assassins, and seasoned vets through the seat. They talk sim time vs. real-track pressure, why the new generation is so far ahead so fast, and toss out names who could thrive in that rotating Dodge ride. Forcing the Plateau with Dr. Ruben Rajah Ruben Rajah is a comedian and doctor who embodies the concept of a global citizenry. Born in Malaysia, educated in Australia, and an American citizen for over 10 years, he is culturally comfortable everywhere and nowhere. Ruben likes to keep his medical career as a radiologist separate from his life as a comedian. We talk about what is involved with keeping your left and right brain from talking to each other and how to work 9 hours a day as a radiologist and still have energy left over to head into Manhattan to hit open mics. It was fun to find a kindred spirit who can't keep the comedian inside of him down! Rumi is also the founder of a Sufi tradition known as the Whirling Dervishes--a phrase coopted by insensitive parents in the 80s and 90s. Sufis, like many other groups, have been the object of abuse and even terrorism around the world. All this and more...Support us on Patreon or you can get our merch at Spreadshop. Join the Community on Discord. Learn more great religion factoids on Facebook and Instagram.
