As she's getting out of the carriage one day, she sees a little dingy figure standing on the stairs, watching her. Her name is Becky and she is a servant of the house. Sara tries to befriend her, and Lavinia snottily points out that it's unseemly to hang out with servant girls. Then, Lavinia, in true Mean Girls fashion, sniffs and huffs and says that they should call Sara "Your Royal Highness” when they find out her father is investing in a diamond mine.We already don't like Lavinia, but it gets worse when she fights with Lottie, who is about a decade younger than she is. God, Lavinia, get a grip. I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Mary has been spending lots of time outdoors and is finally losing her yellow pallor and getting some color in her cheeks, Martha tells Mary why Mr. Craven closed off the garden. Mary starts to explore the house and finds a room filled with beautiful things; fur, silks, and other doo dads. Then she sees a portrait of a woman who looks unnervingly like herself. As she is exploring, she hears the sound of a child crying.I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. Reviews and shares make a huge difference. Ermengarde St. John is a very weird girl and has a decidedly weird name. She's not super smart, poor thing, and is blown away by Sara's ability to learn French.Miss Minchin isn't very nice to Ermengarde, and because of this, Sara feels the need to reach out to her. Sara is super friendly and kind, so Ermengarde decides Sara will be her best friend (not weird at all). Then, Sara meets Lottie, a little girl prone to tantrums. and constantly uses the fact that her mother is dead as a bargaining chip. Sara tells Lottie that she doesn't have a mama either, so she will be Lottie's school mama. https://www.buzzsprout.com/1911430/episodes/19543056I hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. You can find Emily Franklin at www.emilyfranklin.com or on IG at emilyfranklinauthor At the end of May, we attended a Carmichael's book event featuring author Emily Franklin, who has written numerous books. Her latest titled Love & Other Monsters is about a time in history that most English majors look on with awe and wonder. Her novel is about the summer of 1816 when Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polidori traveled to Switzerland and, as the legend goes, told scary stories to each other, which ended up leading to the first vampire story and the book we now know as Frankenstein. But Franklin's novel focuses on a member of the party who doesn't get any acknowledgement—Mary's step-sister Claire Clairemont. Emily did a great job making the Carmichael's audience want to learn more about Claire's story, so we invited her on to share it with our listeners. And for our book recommendation segment of the show, we are talking Shakespeare, the Bard, the Swan of Avon, Willy Shakes. Shakespeare is such a touchstone in literature in ways that we don't regularly think about like classic phrases and tropes. But you don't have to be (or not to be) a Shakespeare scholar to enjoy the books we talk about this week. We have a historical mystery, witty nonfiction, historical fiction, a memoir, a middle grade novel, and a novel in verse. All are influenced in some way by Shakespeare's plays or the man himself. Books Mentioned In This Episode: 1- Love and Other Monsters by Emily Franklin 2- Grandma Joy & Me: A Journey of Healing , One National Park at a Time by Brad Ryan 3- The Humming Room by Ellen Potter 4- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 5- Summer of 1816: A World Without Summer by Nicholas Day 6- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley 7- The Vampyre by John Polidori 8- Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Mushrooms Taught Me About Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies, and Black Survival by Maria Pinto 9- Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman 10- Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbly Weiden 11- Wisdom Corner by David Heska Wanbly Weiden 12- A Five Star Read of Fellow Book Lover Joshua - Devotions by Mary Oliver 13- Daughter of Fair Verona by Christina Dodd 14- Much Ado About Mistletoe by Christina Dodd 15- Shakespeare: The World as a Stage by Bill Bryson 16- By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult 17- Enter the Body by Joy McCullough 18- Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench 19- The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. It's all rainy and gloomy—not exactly the most cheerful start to Mary's new life in Yorkshire. As they drive in a horse-drawn carriage, they pass a large, barren patch of ground, no trees, no birds, no nothin'. It's the moor. Mary takes one look at this big, empty, bleak stretch of land and decides, "I don't like it".Mary wakes up in her new home, the next morning, to the sound of Martha, the young housemaid that will be attending her. Martha is somewhat shocked that Mary can't dress herself. So, Martha breaks down and gets her dressed, letting her know, all the while, that this is not a permanent state of affairs. https://www.buzzsprout.com/1911430/episodes/19531673https://podcasts.apple.com/us/search?term=cathi%20colas%20audiobooks%20and%20high%20horse%20pressI hope you have been enjoying these episodes as much as I enjoy bringing them to you. DEFENDANT: Frances Hodgson Burnett EVIDENCE: Secret Garden Rose Gin SCENE OF THE CRIME: The moors, darling, the moors! -- Hi — come sit with us while we get a little giddy and a lot floral. In this episode of True Crimes Against Wine we test a rosy Scottish gin called Secret Garden, riff on three garden-ready cocktails (a Rose Garden Spritz, a Strawberry Smash, and a Lavender-Lemon Stroll), and wander straight into the moody, magical world of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. We talk sparkling cava vs prosecco, muddled berries, honey-lavender syrup, and why mint on the rim is a total game-changer, then break down why this hundred-year-old story still makes our hearts ache — the visuals, the soundtrack, the gothic elements, and yes, the complicated colonial moments that deserve honest conversation. Bring a glass, bring a friend, and get ready for springtime vibes, serious giggles, and a few tender asides about loss, literature, and why a secret garden is the best kind of therapy.
