As we travel, in this 3rd Part, through the pages of Deuteronomy, once again you will notice that some talks may commence with a news item upon which some comment is made. Some of these will appear to be very dated. However, we have taken the decision to leave these in, rather than omit them. In mos…
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Peter 2. 6
God said “Your lamb shall be without blemish” (Exod. 12.5) The next day John (the Baptist) seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (John 1.29) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation..... But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (1 Peter 1.18/19)
The comments regarding Russia, Israel and Syria are interesting. These were in the news some three years ago yet are so relevant to the present crisis situation in Ukraine.
Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea, A great high Priest whose name is Love Who ever lives and pleads for me. When satan tempts me to despair And tells me of the guilt within, Upward I look and see Him there Who made an end to all my sin. Because the sinless Saviour died, My sinful soul is counted free, For God the just is satisfied To look on Him and pardon me
Some of the blessings of God for and to the Believer are clearly set out in Ephesians. Read them in Chapters 1 and 2 for yourself! Then praise God.
I’m safe because I’m sheltered By Jesus’ precious blood, And I’m sure because He promised, For He cannot change His Word.
Job 7:17 What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? Ps 144:3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! Ec 6:11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
Living below in this old sinful world Hardly a comfort can afford Striving alone to face temptations call Where could I go but to the Lord Where could I go, where could I go Seeking a refuge for my soul Needing a friend to help me in the end Where could I go but to the Lord
The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. (Ps. 24.1) The land was owned by God, it was leased to Israel. In return God was to receive tithes and these tithes show a gracious attitude as to how these rents were to be expended for meeting the needs both spiritual and material, of His people, His ministers and His poor. Today we come to the Sabbatical year, every seventh. This pre types the time when all burdens will be lifted and removed, a future time of rest and happiness for you and for me. It was always, right from the Garden of Eden and still is, the desire of God to have fellowship with and to receive worship from His creation, for His people to follow His commandments and believe His promises and then enabling Him to pour out His promised blessings on His people.
I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus, Since I found in Him a friend so strong and true; I would tell you how He changed my life completely, He did something that no other friend could do. All my life was full of sin when Jesus found me, All my heart was full of misery and woe; Jesus placed His strong and loving arms about me, And He led me in the way I ought togo. Ev'ry day He comes to me with new assurance, More and more I understand His words of love; But I'll never know just why He came to save me, Till some day I see His blessed face above. No one ever cared for me like Jesus, There's no other friend so kind as He; No one else could take the sin and darkness from me, O how much He cared for me.
Where can we worship? Or more correctly: Where should we worship? Well one simply answer is: Where Jesus is. What matters where on earth we dwell? On mountain top, or in the dell, In cottage, or a mansion fair, Where Jesus is, ’tis Heaven there. O hallelujah, yes, ’tis Heav’n, ’Tis Heav’n to know my sins forgiv’n, On land or sea, what matters where? Where Jesus is, ’tis Heaven there.
An interesting note is added here that a young goat was not to be boiled in its mother's milk. There was apparently a heathen practice to do this with associated pagan blessing rituals for crops end the like, so this was not to be copied. The milk is intended as nourishment to the young of the animals, just as the Word of God is intended to nourish young believers (1 Pet. 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:), We need to nourish young believers in the Milk of the Word, not engulf them in it! We should be careful how we use the Scriptures, for young believers need the nourishment and encouragement of God's Word. If we use the Word against them in a harsh, critical way, is this like boiling a kid in its mother's milk?
In this talk we consider the clean and unclean birds and other insects and flying animals. Not so clear cut as with some of the animals. However, where there was doubt, many Jews apparently just cut out any doubtful practice. Just like we should also do - “abstain from all appearance of evil” 1 Thes 5.22. If it is not in Scripture - Reject it without question! and If in doubt cut it out
We have all wondered at a cow chewing her cud, we can all learn from this homely animal. I remember as a kid going into the byre in the evening and watching these docile animals after milking, lying contentedly and chewing the cud - a lovely memory. The comments at the start of this talk were recorded in 2008.
17* Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18* And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. 1* Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 6. 17/18; 7.1
Free from the law of sin and death O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15: 55-57. I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place; I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face; Content to let the world go by to know no gain or loss, My sinful self my only shame, my glory all the cross.
We should realise what other churches teach. The Roman Catholic Church, which claims infallibility in its Councils and theological teachings, clearly and emphatically denies the biblical gospel. The Council of Trent, still in operation, declares: 6th Session, Canon 9: If anyone says that the sinner is justified by faith alone, meaning that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to obtain the grace of justification...let him be anathema. 6th Session, Canon 12: If anyone shall say that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in the divine mercy which remits sins for Christ's sake, or that it is this confidence alone by which we are justified: let him be anathema. 6th Session, Canon 30: If anyone says that after the reception of the grace of justification the guilt is so remitted and the debt of eternal punishment so blotted out to every repentant sinner, that no debt of temporal punishment remains to be discharged either in this world or in purgatory before the gates of heaven can be opened, let him be anathema. 7th Session, Canon 4: If anyone says that the sacraments of the New Law [canons and decrees of the Church] are not necessary for salvation but...without them...men obtain from God through faith alone the grace of justification...let him be anathema.
Two choruses we used to sing as kids: The Word of God, I’m standing on the Word of God, ‘Tis the Book our fathers fought for, ‘Tis the Book our fathers died for: The Word of God, I’m standing on the Word of God, Though the foes of the Lord may scorn His Word, I’m standing on the Word of God. The best Book to read is the Bible, The best Book to read is the Bible, If we read it every day It will help us on our way, The best Book to read is the Bible.
Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the Gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls or danger, be never wanting there. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To him the overcometh a crown of life shall be; He with the King of Glory shall reign eternally. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Phil 3.14
