What if the reason you don't give feedback, follow through, or change your habits… isn't willpower? What if it's a belief? In this episode of The Radical Candor Podcast, Kim Scott talks with Nir Eyal — author of Hooked, Indistractable, and his new book Beyond Belief — about the hidden force behind motivation: the stories we tell ourselves. They explore: Why AI can't replace human relationships — but can help us practice hard conversations The limiting belief that keeps people silent at work Why knowing what to do isn't enough How pain (not pleasure) drives behavior The difference between addiction and habit Why “time management is pain management.” How to reinterpret anxiety as readiness And why beliefs are tools — not truths If you've ever struggled to speak up, follow through, or break a bad habit — this conversation will help you see what's really getting in the way.Chapters (00:00) Introduction Kim welcomes Nir Eyal and introduces AI portraits and scaling human insight.        This episode of WarDocs features Dr. David Tate, a clinical neuropsychologist and lead author of the 2025 Military Medicine Article of the Year. The discussion centers on a groundbreaking study utilizing the LIMBIC-CENC cohort—a massive data set of over 3,000 participants—to investigate persistent brain changes in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Dr. Tate explains that traditional MRI scans often show normal results in patients with invisible symptoms because researchers often oversimplify patient groupings. By digging into more refined clinical characteristics, such as the mechanism of injury and number of exposures, his team identified unique physical signatures in the brain. Specifically, blast exposures were linked to changes in central white matter, while repetitive traumatic hits impacted more peripheral gray matter structures.    The conversation highlights the critical importance of neuroimaging techniques like diffusion tensor imaging, which is more sensitive to structural white matter changes than standard hospital sequences. Dr. Tate emphasizes that these findings provide vital validation for service members and veterans, demonstrating that their ongoing symptoms are rooted in physical, biological changes rather than purely psychological or "imagined". For clinicians, the episode serves as a call to action to move beyond simplistic interpretations of "normal" imaging and to prioritize exhaustive injury histories that include the physics of every exposure event.    By combining a deep dive into advanced neuroimaging with a focus on personalized medicine, this episode provides a comprehensive look at the future of TBI diagnosis and treatment. Listeners will learn how high-resolution volumetric data and detailed clinical info—including loss of consciousness and post-traumatic amnesia markers—are used to improve prognostic accuracy. Ultimately, Dr. Tate's work demonstrates that injury history matters even years later, pointing researchers and clinicians toward a more precise approach to studying and treating the diverse landscape of mild traumatic brain injuries in the military population. Researchers combined these images with a plethora of clinical data, including lifetime exposure histories, demographics, and specific injury markers like loss of consciousness. (12:44-17:03) Key Findings: Heterogeneity of mTBI and Mechanism-Specific Signatures The study reveals that mild TBI is extremely heterogeneous and simplistic group comparisons often obscure meaningful findings. Findings showed that blast exposures leave signatures in central white matter, while repetitive traumatic injuries more specifically affect gray matter structures. (17:03-22:15) The Bottom Line: Validating Veteran Experiences and Clinical Takeaways The bottom line is that persistent brain changes can be detected if clinicians look at the right variables and mechanism of injury. This research validates the lived experiences of veterans, proving their symptoms are not imagined and emphasizing the need for detailed injury histories. Article Reference Persistent MRI Findings Unique to Blast and Repetitive Mild TBI: Analysis of the CENC/LIMBIC Cohort Injury Characteristics Open Access David F Tate, PhD , Benjamin S C Wade, PhD , Carmen S Velez, MS ,  Erin D Bigler, PhD , Nicholas D Davenport, PhD , Emily L Dennis, PhD ,  Carrie Esopenko, PhD , Sidney R Hinds, MD , Jacob Kean, PhD , Eamonn Kennedy, PhD  Military Medicine, Volume 189, Issue 9-10, September/October 2024, Pages e1938–e1946, https://doi.org/10.1093/milmed/usae031   Take Home Messages Heterogeneity of Mild TBI: Mild traumatic brain injury is not a single, uniform condition, and simplistic groupings can obscure meaningful characteristics of an injury. Clinicians must recognize that "if you've seen one mild TBI, you've seen one mild TBI," requiring a more personalized approach to diagnosis. Mechanism-Specific Signatures: The physical signature left on the brain depends heavily on the mechanism of injury, with blast exposures typically affecting central white matter and repetitive traumatic hits impacting peripheral gray matter. Understanding these distinctions helps explain why different patients experience different functional outcomes even with the same diagnosis. Sensitivity of Advanced Neuroimaging: Standard MRI sequences often fail to detect injuries in mTBI patients, but advanced techniques like diffusion tensor imaging are highly sensitive to structural white matter changes. Relying solely on basic imaging can lead to an over-simplistic interpretation that overlooks persistent brain changes. Validation of Lived Experiences: Research into persistent brain changes provides vital biological validation for veterans and service members who struggle with ongoing symptoms. These findings support the idea that invisible wounds have a physical basis and are not simply psychological or imagined. Importance of Detailed Injury Histories: For clinicians, the most critical takeaway is the necessity of capturing a detailed lifetime injury history, including the number of exposures and specific physics of each event. This detailed clinical information is essential for improving prognostic accuracy and understanding a patient's long-term health trajectory.   Episode Keywords Military Medicine, WarDocs Podcast, Traumatic Brain Injury, TBI Diagnosis, Blast Exposure, Neuropsychology, Persistent MRI Findings, Veteran Healthcare, Brain Imaging, Mild TBI, LIMBIC-CENC Cohort, Neuroimaging Research, AMSUS, Combat Injury, White Matter Change, Brain Health, Dr. David Tate, Military Health System, Invisible Injuries, Medical Podcast, Concussion Recovery, Gray Matter, MRI Scans, AMSUS Article of the Year, Veteran Support, Brain Mapping Hashtags #MilitaryMedicine, #WarDocs, #BrainHealth, #Veterans, #Neuroscience, #MildTBI, #BlastInjury, #MedicalResearch   Honoring the Legacy and Preserving the History of Military Medicine The WarDocs Mission is to honor the legacy, preserve the oral history, and showcase career opportunities, unique expeditionary experiences, and achievements of Military Medicine. In this episode of the Voxology podcast, Mike and Tim tackle the heavy reality of the Epstein files and the church's response to systemic injustice. Join us for an honest conversation about anger, accountability, and a powerful message on faith. ⚖️ JUSTICE AND THE EPSTEIN FILES Things get serious as Mike reads a phenomenal post by Pastor Brian Drinkwine. We dive deep into the recent news surrounding the Epstein files, the Department of Justice, and political figures. ⛪ THE CHURCHS RESPONSE This is a raw look at how American Christianity has become skilled at straining gnats and swallowing camels. Why do we go to war over church carpet colors but stay silent on the exploitation of the vulnerable? We discuss the heartbreak of losing trust in leaders and the challenge of Matthew 20. Jesus asks if we can drink the cup of reckoning without rushing to defend our political tribes. THE POWERS AND PRINCIPALITIES Then, Mike and Tim explore the concept of powers and principalities, the wisdom of God versus human wisdom, and redefine what freedom in Christ truly means. What if authenticity isn't a personality trait — but a measurable marker of nervous system capacity? In this episode of Trauma Rewired, we explore authenticity and forgiveness through the lens of post-traumatic growth. We unpack why telling the truth can feel physiologically threatening after trauma, how masking and performance develop as protective strategies, and why forgiveness is not a mindset shift — but a capacity that grows through regulation, integration, and self-attunement. Authenticity is not about oversharing or abandoning discernment. It's the ability to feel the truth in your body and stay connected while expressing it. That requires nervous system flexibility — not willpower. Topics Covered: Why authenticity is a marker of nervous system capacity How trauma wires masking, performance, and self-editing Why telling the truth can feel physiologically threatening Small lies as protective regulation strategies Masking, perfectionism, and increased allostatic load The difference between visibility and authentic expression Why psychedelic honesty is a state shift, not a skill Oversharing and vulnerability hangovers as capacity issues Why forcing forgiveness reinforces threat patterns Self-forgiveness as a neuroplastic learning process Attunement, interoception, and emotional tolerance Rupture and repair as mechanisms of growth Forgiveness without bypassing accountability Rumination, grievance, and sympathetic dominance Why post-traumatic growth reflects the capacity to hold truth and connection at the same time Chapters: 00:00 – Authenticity as Nervous System Capacity 04:30 – Why Truth Feels Like Threat 09:45 – Masking, Performance & Conditional Safety 17:10 – Psychedelics, Peak States & Integration 23:40 – Visibility vs Authentic Expression 29:50 – Self-Forgiveness & Capacity Building 36:15 – Attunement, Shame & Neuroplasticity 41:20 – Forgiving Others Without Bypassing 47:30 – Forgiveness, Faith & Staying Connected   Calls to Action: Neurosomatic Intelligence is now enrolling : https://neurosomaticintelligence.com/nsi-certification Sacred Synapse: an educational YouTube channel founded by Jennifer Wallace that explores nervous system regulation, applied neuroscience, consciousness, and psychedelic preparation and integration through Neurosomatic Intelligence.  Wayfinder Journal: Track nervous system patterns and support preparation and integration through Neurosomatic Intelligence. The crew is back, and this might be the most chaotic and unfiltered start to an episode yet! We kick things off with a hilarious (and highly inappropriate) debate about double standards and holidays, officially declaring March 14th the ultimate Men's Valentine's Day. Then, we dive into the culture. Is 50 Cent untouchable? We debate his relentless online trolling, whether he crosses the line by bringing family into beefs, and why no one in his camp seems to check him. We also salute Juvenile and the Hot Boys for their massive resurgence, taking a brief moment to drop some real wisdom on valuing your freedom and staying out of the system. Plus, with the Houston Rodeo in full swing, we discuss if Louisiana legends like Cash Money or No Limit could take over Black Heritage Night, how Houston and New Orleans cultures merge, and what to expect from the impending Houston Spring Break madness. Finally, we close it out with a hilarious breakdown of "Booty Duty" and the unmatched beauty of Houston women. Based on the final chapter of Prof Dr Ger Graus's book Through a Different Lens: Lessons from a Life in Education (Routledge), this conversation asks the most honest question of the entire series: So what?Ger examines what 40-plus years of educational work has truly changed — and what it hasn't.At the heart of the episode is a sobering reckoning: Wythenshawe, the deprived area of Manchester where Ger dedicated much of his career, remains in the bottom 25% of England's most disadvantaged communities — just as it was in 1999. Yet rather than despair, Ger finds meaning in the individual lives transformed, the schools that finally began collaborating, and the quiet but lasting legacy of the Education Action Zone that brought 29 schools together for the first time.Joining the conversation are educators, researchers, and colleagues who offer their own reflections on the book's significance — including insights from OECD Education Director Andreas Schleicher's afterword, and a passionate endorsement from Russian education researcher Dr. Sergey Kosaretsky.Key QuotesGer Graus on systemic change:"Certain dials are too big to shift by one person or by one small organisation. It's a concerted effort — and in order to see the big picture, all pieces of the jigsaw need to fall into place."Ger Graus on political impatience:"It's taken you since the 1944 Education Act to keep getting it wrong. Whatever made you think that in five years we would solve all your problems?"Andreas Schleicher (OECD), quoted from the book's Afterword:"The task is not to make the impossible possible, but to make the possible attainable."Dr. Sergey Kosaretsky on the book's message:"Education is not only schools. Education is not only universities. Education is a lot of things that children do every day — with their friends, their parents, with themselves."Mark Sylvester on Ger's philosophy:"One of the things he would say is that he wants to teach children, but also to teach humans how to learn."Key Takeaways1. Structural poverty is stubborn — but individual impact still matters. Despite decades of effort, the communities Ger worked in remain among England's most deprived. He doesn't shy away from this, but argues that transforming individual lives — like the girl from Wythenshawe who played Juliet in Italy and re-engaged with school entirely — is proof that the work was never wasted.2. Change in education takes generational patience. Politicians want results in five-year cycles. Ger argues that meaningful educational reform operates on a far longer timeline, and that unrealistic expectations are one of the biggest barriers to real progress.3. Lived and informal experience is education too. Multiple contributors highlight that education extends well beyond school walls — into homes, exchanges, community experiences, and play. Ger's career has been defined by championing this broader definition.4. The book is a call to action, not just a memoir. Colleagues urge policymakers — especially those working on England's forthcoming schools white paper — to read Through a Different Lens and draw from its hard-won lessons. It's described as "a textbook for all teachers, educators, and parents."5. Asking "so what?" is an act of courage, not defeat. Ger's willingness to interrogate his own legacy — particularly in the shadow of a cancer diagnosis — models the kind of honest, reflective leadership that education urgently needs.Chapters:00:07 - Introduction to the Series02:54 - Reflecting on Impact and Change10:41 - Reflections on Education and Poverty15:40 - The Importance of Lived Experience in Education19:42 - The Importance of Education Beyond Schools24:27 - The Role of New Leaders in Educationhttps://www.gergraus.comGet the book – Through a Different Lens: Lessons from a Life in Education

In this episode of Don't Miss This, Dave Butler and Grace Freeman study Genesis 37–41 and step into the story of Joseph, a story that moves from the pit, to the palace, to the prison, and reminds us that God is present in every season. What begins with favoritism, jealousy, and a coat of many colors quickly turns into betrayal and a seemingly empty pit. Yet over and over again, scripture repeats the same steady promise: the Lord was with Joseph. In slavery, in false accusation, in forgotten years in prison, God was still writing the story, preparing, positioning, and prospering him in ways Joseph could not yet see. This episode invites us to consider our own pits and prisons and ask where the Lord might already be at work. Because the promise was never that we would avoid hard seasons, but that He would be with us through them, redeeming the story in His time. The culture's biggest lie about good and evil is that they're equal and opposite forces locked in an endless cosmic tug-of-war. Al, Zach, John Luke, and Christian explore why that idea quietly reshapes how we see God, Satan, heaven, and hell — and why C.S. Lewis insists it falls apart under real Christian theology. From Jesus' temptation in the wilderness to Lewis' picture of hell as a shrinking, hollow existence, the guys explore how evil is a distortion of what God created as good. In this episode: Matthew 4, verses 1–11; 1 John 2, verses 15–17; 1 Timothy 6, verses 11–16; 2 Corinthians 12, verses 7–10; Hebrews 12, verses 26–28; 1 Kings 8, verse 27; Acts 7 Today's conversation is about Lesson 7 of C.S. Lewis on Christianity taught by visiting Hillsdale professor Michael Ward. Take the course with us at no cost to you! Sign up at http://unashamedforhillsdale.com/. More about C.S. Lewis on Christianity: Encounter the faith & wisdom of C.S. Lewis C.S. Lewis's writings bring the great questions of the Christian faith to life. Through his imaginative and invigorating style, Lewis answers these questions in ways that are compelling to those outside Christianity and energizing to those within the Christian faith. In this free, seven-lecture course, Professor Michael Ward—a leading scholar of C.S. Lewis—will explore Lewis's: argument for objective moral value in response to the rise of modern subjectivism; bittersweet path to conversion and the role of enjoyment in the Christian life; advice regarding the proper way to pray and read the Bible; teachings concerning the purpose of pain and how to confront suffering and loss; insights about the nature of heaven and hell. This course examines these fundamental topics not only through his classic works—including Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Abolition of Man—but also through Lewis's personal experiences with doubt, conversion, suffering, grief, and joy. Through this course, students will discover Lewis's core lessons regarding the truth and goodness of the Christian faith and how to apply those lessons to one's life.  Join us today in discovering C.S. Lewis's enduring lessons about the meaning and practice of Christianity.
