In 2010, software engineer Natalie Gordon was pregnant– and fed up with the overwhelming baby aisles in big box stores. So she quit her computer job to code the registry she wished existed. No pink-and-blue giraffes. No allegiance to a single store. Just a universal list that let friends give the real help that new parents need—from strollers to diaper services to dog-walking.Natalie coded the first lines of Babylist during her son's nap time. She managed customer support, pitched bloggers from coffee shops, and learned growth the hard way—first through affiliates, then with a pivotal Pinterest bet, and finally by taking on her own inventory (and all the headaches that come with it). Along the way she wrestled with hiring, firing, fundraising, and the identity shift from founder to CEO. Today, Babylist is one of the most trusted parenting platforms in the U.S., with a retail arm, editorial content, and a program for providing breast pumps. This is a masterclass in living a problem–and building a solution. You'll learn:How to spot a customer pain point and design an MVP around itThe power of slow viralityHow to use a small seed round without losing controlThe painful path from affiliate revenue to first-party e-commerceStumbles with hiring – and firing– as a first-time CEOHow paid growth works on visual platforms like PinterestHow “controlling your destiny” justifies a hard shift in business modelHow coaching and feedback helps you evolve from founder to leaderTimestamps:05:32 - Learning to solve hard problems at Amazon -08:28 - Sabbatical in Latin America: Natalie's first (failed) business and what it taught her17:50 - A meltdown in a superstore → the Babylist “aha” moment19:40 - Designing a universal registry, dog-walking included24:42 - Blitzing the mommy blogs, a “pregnant hacker” post on Hacker News30:01 - Why $140/month revenue felt like a victory39:18 - Going solo at an Accelerator, and the agony of early hiring and firing49:29 - From “slowly viral” to real scale, and how Pinterest helped58:09 - Affiliate links to in-house inventory → piles of bassinets in the office 1:01:57 - COVID's unexpected windfall, the health wedge (breast pumps & beyond)This episode was produced by Kerry Thompson with music by Ramtin Arablouei. Episode 2782: Emma Scheib gently reminds us that while parenting may be the hardest, and often most rewarding, job in the world, it's one that desperately needs regular rest. She encourages parents to take intentional breaks, both big and small, to recharge and reconnect with themselves. Through her reflections on sabbaticals and learning presence from her children, she shows that slowing down, saying yes to the moment, and stepping away at times can actually make us better caregivers and more grounded human beings. Read along with the original article(s) here: http://simpleslowlovely.com/parents-need-sabbaticals-too/ AND http://simpleslowlovely.com/my-children-are-teaching-me-how-to-be-present/ Quotes to ponder: "We need regular breaks, from the hardest job in the world." "The best part was that I got to be 'just me' for three days. I wasn't 'mummy', I was just me." "My children are teaching me how to be present." This week I go solo to reflect on my 10-week sabbatical and how it reshaped 2025 and even 2026. I share four core lessons, creating rhythms that make rest possible, trusting your team and processes, discerning rather than just deciding, and refusing to journey alone. In this episode of Women of Color Rise, I speak with Gloria Lee—Social Entrepreneur, Lecturer at UC Berkeley and Stanford, and visionary behind a new venture focused on helping elders thrive while aging in place. A seasoned educator and nonprofit leader, Gloria's career includes Founder, CEO of Educate78, President and COO of New Schools Venture Fund, and Area Superintendent and COO of Aspire Public Schools. Gloria didn't just dream about traveling the world with her husband and two sons—she made it happen. In our conversation, she shares how she turned this bold vision into reality. Leverage career transitions: When her nonprofit reached a natural inflection point, Gloria chose not to leap into her next role right away. Instead, she seized the moment to make their family travel dream a reality. Make it financially possible: Renting out their Bay Area home and choosing more affordable destinations meant their year abroad cost less than staying home. Mindful spending made the dream sustainable. Think about the long-term impact: Rather than focusing on reasons not to go, Gloria envisioned how the experience could strengthen their family—and it did. They returned with deeper bonds and shared memories that will last a lifetime. Support your children's growth: Gloria's introverted sons embraced “worldschooling” instead of traditional homeschooling. They returned with more gratitude, broader perspectives, and even a newfound passion for environmental conservation. Gloria's story is a reminder that we can make space for both impact in our work and dreams that feed our souls. Sometimes, the bravest career move is to step away and explore the world—with the people you love most. Want to stay up to date on LCMS Happenings from Pastor Tim?Join the LCMS Current: https://www.uniteleadership.org/thelcmscurrentPastor Aaron Gehrke has served 15 years in one congregation — something almost unheard of today. In this episode, Tim Ahlman sits down with Aaron to unpack what he's learned about discipleship, leadership development, and staying healthy in ministry over the long haul. From raising up leaders who multiply, to embracing sabbaticals as essential rhythms of health, Aaron offers grounded wisdom for pastors and church leaders alike. They also discuss the growing conversation within the LCMS between “Barrier Breakers” and “Distinction Keepers” — and how faithfulness might actually live in the tension between both.Whether you're a pastor, leader, or layperson passionate about the mission of Jesus, this conversation will challenge you to rethink how the church grows — not by doing more, but by developing more disciples who make disciples.

In this week's Riff, Gino shares what came out of his 2025 sabbatical and why taking a full month away from work can unlock clarity, peace, and healing. He entered the month with three clear intentions: to remember who he is, to see life as it is, and to release what no longer serves him. What followed was a quiet (but powerful) transformation. What began with impatience and spiritual restlessness led to slowing down, canceling commitments, and returning to a more honest, authentic way of showing up in both life and business. Gino also explores the link between repressed emotion and physical symptoms, revealing how subconscious healing helped ease his long-standing back pain. This episode is a heartfelt reminder that space is not empty; it is where the True Self can finally breathe. This week, Kurt Wilkin discusses what he's learned about selling businesses and how he's thinking about what he might do next. An entrepreneur, an investor, a mentor, and a former business owner who recently sold a recruiting firm, Wilkin tells us why his acquisition of the firm didn't work out the way he hoped and how he managed to turn it around and sell it. Part of the problem, Kurt says, was that he jumped back into the game too quickly after selling his previous business. It's a mistake he's not going to repeat this time.

Joseph F. Dumond from sightedmoon.com, a multi book author and teacher of prophecies. This particular message is that of Daniel 8&9. The Sabbatical and Jubilee years are being deciphered here in cycles as recorded in history and rarely understood. This covenant made with many ends when the 2300 Day Of Hell begin. So, what is this all about and what does it mean for the future?Red Heifers and end times at the helm, this is teaching regarding these things. We may often not always agree 100 but the messages need out there for us to decipher and Joseph's main message was "read your bible!" Summary: In this episode, John R. DiJulius III and Denise Thompson discuss the importance of taking time for personal growth through sabbaticals, the evolving job market dynamics leading to a trend of loyalty among employees, the stark contrast in compensation between CEOs and average workers, and the philosophy surrounding wealth and generosity. They explore how societal expectations and corporate practices shape our understanding of success and responsibility. Takeways: Taking a sabbatical can lead to personal and professional growth. The job market is shifting towards valuing employee loyalty over job hopping. CEO compensation has drastically outpaced worker wages, raising concerns about corporate greed. Generosity and giving back can lead to a more fulfilling life than hoarding wealth. The concept of stakeholder capitalism is gaining traction but lacks meaningful implementation. Economic trends show that staying in a job may now be more beneficial than switching for higher pay. The disparity in wealth distribution is a pressing issue that needs addressing. Corporate practices often prioritize shareholder wealth over employee welfare. Generosity should be a priority for those who have achieved financial success. The conversation around wealth and its responsibilities is evolving. I have recorded multiple episodes on the topic of "Sharpening The Blade." Sharpening the blade is a term used by chefs, lumberjacks and hockey players that means, take the time to sharpen your blade and you will save time and effort while you cut, chop or skate. I sharpen my mental blade multiple times a year. Short trips, hikes, weekends with no cell service and anything else that removes me from the grid would qualify as a STB! This last STB was one for the ages. I trained for it, planned for it and executed it to the highest level. It involved an entire month of travel, new experiences, killer waves, massive wipeouts, sun, fun and romance. (Ahhh ha honey! That's right baby) You don't need to do what I did to get similar results. You just need to have an intention and create an environment that is conducive to that intention. You have Bali in your heart. You have Thailand in your loins. You just need to dig deeper to find it. (That didn't sound right!) Enjoy this episode. I enjoyed recording it for you.
