In returning and rest you shall be saved." Ruth Haley Barton: "We cannot give what we do not have." Sabbaticals, break weeks, and paid vacation, oh my! For many, the idea of taking a break from work is daunting. With the disruption in the work environment, how will anything get done? As he prepares his own upcoming sabbatical, David Bryfman discusses the role that rest plays in the workplace with Josh Feldman, CEO and founder of R&R: The Rest of our Lives. In a time marked by burnout and uncertainty, especially in the nonprofit world, stepping back is more necessary than ever. Josh suggests that it isn't productive to be productive all of the time; a runner doesn't sprint for a whole race, they have disciplined places of sprint, of walk, and of stillness. How can we incorporate stillness into our work? Furthermore, Josh reminds the audience of the Jewishness of rest, and how we can be inspired by the Sabbath and the shmita year. David and Josh challenge the audience to think about when work gets done, and when it doesn't. This episode was produced by Dina Nusnbaum and Miranda Lapides. Send us a textWhat happens when the dream your mother sacrificed everything for becomes your personal nightmare? Johannesburg-based filmmaker Karabo Lediga joins us to explore this haunting question through her debut feature film "Sabbatical" – a raw, honest portrayal of mother-daughter relationships in post-apartheid South Africa. A 30-something year old woman called Lesego, is the compelling main character of this story. She is forced to return to her childhood home in the township in Pretoria after a professional downfall. While living in her mother's house, she has to reckon with having become alien to her own mother, how her Model C school experience has facilitated the fragility of that relationship, and the psychological cost of having being thrown in all-white spaces in order to achieve the success or dreams that parents desperately want for their children. Our conversation ventures beyond the film into Karabo's amazing film and television career. Her credits include Netflix's "Queen Sono" and the touching short film "What Did You Dream?" that was inspired by her own grandmother's story. Karabo shares invaluable insights about sustaining a creative career in South Africa's evolving film landscape. Bonus: she shares the different funding mechanisms available to South African filmmakers—a system that is relatively unique to the country—and her commitment to authentic storytelling despite industry pressures.Sabbatical is a much needed voice from South Africa's so-called born free generation. It's entertaining, it offers deep cultural insights and serves as an amazing showcase of Karabo's unique voice. Whether you're a film enthusiast, a creative professional, or someone navigating complex family dynamics, Karabo's perspectives will resonate long after the credits roll.LINKS AND MENTIONS Model C - Formerly whites-only public schools that were desegregated after Apartheid. In this two-part series, we talk about work-life trade-offs, momentum, and why imagining your future might be the most strategic thing you'll do. That's when I knew it was time to stretch again.”The danger of being competent—and the invitation to do more than just deliver.Stop Filling Gaps You Don't Want to Own“I could solve the problem, but that didn't mean I should.”Why she stepped back from team leadership roles—even when others saw it as a step up.Sabbatical as Prototype“It was a test. This week's Jerusalem Lights podcast breathes a heavy sigh and considers the massive desecration of G-d's name (chilul Hashem) as Israel is maligned while she continues to defend herself and fight for her very survival. Ahmed Rahman is taking a sabbatical to digitize and quantify the lives of tens of thousands of naval officers across three centuries. Learn why.History of Sabbaticals
There is nothing "basic" about THE BASICS. The foundations of faith are a BIG DEAL, and they help us form a life that is BUILT TO LAST. That is why it is so important for our PASTORS to follow God's teaching, especially on the topic of REST. We NEED them well rested so they can GO THE DISTANCE for the church. Whether you're a seasoned veteran Pastor or just starting out in your faith, this message, SABBATICAL- PASTORING 101 will DEEPEN your understanding of GOD'S WORD and the importance of REST. Let's join Pastor Joe at our BC Boardman Campus.
Last fall we announced that from June 5 through September 2, our Senior Pastor, Fr. Bliss will be stepping away for a season of sabbatical rest. Here at All Souls, we have a long standing sabbatical policy in place to offer our clergy intentional time for spiritual renewal, deep rest, and personal reflection. This is not just a gift for the pastor, it's a gift for the whole church. Sabbaticals allow clergy to return refreshed, rooted, and reoriented for the work ahead. And they offer the congregation a chance to deepen its own rhythms of shared leadership, prayerful attentiveness, and Spirit-led resilience. Send us a textBe still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Psalm 37:7What does it look like to "rest expectantly" or to rest with expectation? This episode considers this idea against the backdrop of several verses in Psalm 37. As we come into the summer, we often trade one level of busyness and "over-programming" for a season that moves at the same pace (just with a different look). These months are often perfect times to pull away, to find rest in our Savior, and to quiet ourselves before Him. Sadly, we often don't utilize them as we should. Let this podcast take you into the summer, recognizing your need for more of His presence and less of the world's pace. Find rest and be expectant for what He will do!
Ah, the sabbatical. Getting one is like hitting the jackpot, right? All your problems would melt away if you had one. You'd go into it a frazzled, anxious, burnt out mess, and emerge serene, rested, and with a few dazzling additions to your CV. In fact, you'd be so sorted if you got a sabbatical that it's probably never occurred to you that you might need some hand-holding through the process.Enter our guest for this episode, Bethany Wilinski, Associate Professor at Michigan State University, sabbatical coach, and host of the Sabbatical 101 podcast. Bethany's own sabbatical experience taught her that, if you're not careful, a sabbatical can make you feel more burnt out and depleted, not less. She now works with academics to help them use their sabbaticals to rest, recharge, reconnect with what excites them, and relate to their work in a healthier way. Bethany is here to ensure that, if and when you're lucky enough to get a sabbatical, you can make it work for you.You can find Bethany's website, including a link to her podcast, here.

In this episode of The Self-Employed Life, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Annette Mason, sabbaticalist and Succession Architect at Trilogy Design Works. Annette shared how intentional sabbaticals can be powerful tools for self-employed individuals to regain clarity, spark creativity, and build sustainable success. We discussed the difference between a vacation and a sabbatical, how to structure one even while running a business, and the importance of designing time away with intention. Annette also introduced her framework of Compass, Maps, and Constellations to help people align with their values, plan with vision, and lean into the support systems around them. Annette uses her background in corporate innovation and personal experience with burnout in order to encourage others to rethink how we work and to embrace sabbaticals as a meaningful part of a resilient and fulfilling self-employed life.
