This podcast is a resource for independent self-releasing artists. A place to hear from music marketers, industry professionals, successful artists, independent music champions and thinkers about how to focus on marketing activity that actually moves the needle and advances an artist career. It's so easy to be busy as an independent musician. It's much more difficult to be productive, busying yourself only with the right things at the right time.
We need to educate our fans. We cannot assume that they know what to do and why they should do it. So, sending emails or making posts just saying "Go follow me on Spotify"... They're not gonna understand why that's important. – Bree NobleThis week I'm speaking to Bree Noble. I first came across Bree through the Profitable Musician Summit which is an online music conference aimed at providing step by step advice that artists can use to make a sustainable living from music.Bree teaches independent female artists how to build successful music careers via the Female Musician Academy and hosts the Women Of Substance radio station and podcast which was launched in 2007 to promote quality female indie artists.Bree is also running a free workshop on releasing music called Rock Your Next Release.I hope you enjoy this episode with Bree Noble. Digital, especially Spotify, should be used as a marketing tool not as your main focus for generating revenue. – Rob HirstThis week's guest is Rob Hirst from Fans for Bands, a PR, playlist pitching and social media company and These Bloody Thieves an independent record label based in Sheffield. I came across Fans for Bands when looking for playlisting support for a band I'm working with. Rob came recommended by a friend of the artist. I think the best type of marketing is when you don't need to do much of the promotion yourself because you've built such a great fanbase that they're actually gonna do that for you. - Ross Barber-SmithThis week's guest is music web designer Ross Barber-Smith from Electric Kiwi.As well as making beautiful websites for bands and musicians across the globe, Ross has also created content to help artists with articles on everything from building music communities and why he loves Twitter, to an open letter to music fans telling them the best way to support the artists they love.Ross is based in Glasgow but he co-hosts a podcast with Marcio Novelli, an artist from Canada, called Bridge the Atlantic which launched in 2014 and has featured guests from all corners of the music industry and has over 4 & ½ thousand subscribers and over a million views on their YouTube channel so I'm really grateful and excited to welcome Ross Barber-Smith.Show notesAriel Hyatt & Derek Sivers on Crafting the Perfect PitchHow to write a bio (The Unsigned Guide)Start With WhySammy Andrews tweetRik Barker: “if she wanted to sell 500,000 albums, she'd need to meet 500,000 people”Why musicians need their own websiteJustin Trawick and artist collective The 9Using email newsletters to build and engage your fanbaseElectric KiwiRoss in on Instagram // Twitter // FacebookBridge The Atlantic podcastLinks Join the conversation & community at Amplifyr.co.uk IndieMusicMarketing.co.uk Indie Music Marketing on Instagram Indie Music Marketing on Twitter Rich Hearn is on Twitter: @richarddhearn ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Start with making great records before you get too wrapped up in the idea of what is our press pack gonna look like - Andy GannonAndy Gannon is a young mid-20's artist and producer with experience and talent that go way beyond his years. Although I have to admit that I'm somewhat biased because Andy and I have a close working relationship in that I manage his band, Bad Love.We have a lot of conversations often daily about this kind of stuff with regard to the band and so I thought it would be interesting to take a step back and discuss our thoughts and feelings around marketing from a more holistic perspective.Andy is the frontman, songwriter and producer in Bad Love who, in April 2020, are an early stage four-piece alt-pop band who make their own brand of Sad-Boy Pop. He is also a producer and has worked on records for Robbie Williams, Skinny Lister, Rudimental and Clean Bandit.Show notesGoogle's Aristotle Project and psychological safetyLarkins - Not Enough Love (from isolation)There's A Reason Why - Blossoms in Isolation! The Less I Know The Better - Tame Impala with BlossomsBBC IntroducingAmazing RadioShell Zenner -
It can only be done by really, really boring dull things like you need to have a plan - Frank WilkesMy guest this week, on episode 2, worked as the Artist Development Coordinator at Higher Rhythm in Doncaster for a number of years before founding his label, DMF Digital that is part of the Yorkshire Music Forum – who are one of the PRS Foundation's Talent Development Partners.Frank Wilkes is also Founder & CEO at Kycker – an artist development platform that offers digital distribution, royalty collection and industry opportunities such as showcases and sync placements.Due to this being recorded in April 2020 with the country on lockdown, Frank wasn't able to get hold of a mic so we recorded his side of the conversation on his laptop mic which meant the quality was a bit hit and miss but I hope it doesn't distract too much and you can still enjoy listening to Episode 2 of the Indie Music Marketing podcast with Frank Wilkes.Show notesDr Mike Jones (University of Liverpool)Book: Tour:Smart: And Break the Band - Martin AtkinsThey Might Be Giants - 'Dial A Song'Spot on Track - The Spotify & Apple Music trackerChart Metric - Music Insights Driven By Data ScienceFeatured Artists Coalition - Founded in 2009 to support, promote and protect artists in the music industry. The Warren Youth Music Project, HullSammy Andrews - "don't be a tw*t" tweetKycker - First Release Schedule Template (Downloadable Excel Sheet)Higher Rhythm - A Hub of Music, Media & Creative Industry Opportunities in YorkshireKycker.net - Online Artist Development // Digital Distribution // Royalty Collection // Live & Sync Opportunities // Industry Know How // Artist Reviews // All For FreeYorkshire Music ForumLinks Join the conversation & community at Amplifyr.co.uk IndieMusicMarketing.co.uk Indie Music Marketing on Instagram Indie Music Marketing on Twitter Rich Hearn is on Twitter: @richarddhearn ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Do not turn off your creativity. Your marketing is an extension of your art just like those decisions you made about which instruments to use or how much distortion to put into the recording - Derek SiversMy guest this week, for our first ever episode is none other than writer, musician, programmer and entrepreneur Derek Sivers who is perhaps best known for being the founder and former president of CD Baby which is the largest online distributor of independent music in the world.I have been a fan of Derek's work for a long time. He's also a great raconteur and storyteller and he certainly didn't disappoint during our conversation.Derek offers some brilliant and insightful advice and stories around each of the subjects covered.
