Send me a messageIn this episode of Inside The Mix, host Marc Matthews engages in a profound conversation with Tyler Lyle, the singer-songwriter and one-half of the synthwave duo, The Midnight. Tyler delves into the enigmatic nature of songwriting, describing it as "a well-narrated hallucination," and likens the creative process to "trying to start a truck sitting on a block of ice." Drawing from his folk storytelling roots, Tyler shares how he seamlessly integrates evocative lyrics into The Midnight's nostalgic synth-driven soundscapes. He contrasts the tangible aspects of music production with the abstract challenges of lyric writing, emphasizing the importance of consistent dedication—what he refers to as the "ass-in-chair method." This disciplined approach involves daily studio sessions from 10 am to 5 pm, complemented by morning routines of journaling, exercise, and meditation to foster creativity. The synergy between Tyler and his production partner, Tim McEwan, is highlighted as a harmonious blend of prolific idea generation and meticulous refinement. Despite geographical distances, they prioritize periodic in-person collaborations to capture the irreplaceable energy of shared creative spaces.Much of the discussion centers on Tyler's transition from confessional songwriting to crafting lyrics rich in archetypes and universal symbols. Inspired by Carl Jung's philosophies, he aims to create a shared mythological space within The Midnight's music, allowing listeners to project their meanings onto the imagery. What You'll Learn:The abstract nature of lyric writing and strategies to overcome creative challenges. The importance of consistent routines in fostering creativity.Balancing prolific idea generation with meticulous refinement in collaborative settings. The role of archetypes and universal symbols in crafting resonant lyrics.Insights into blending folk storytelling with synthwave aesthetics. For aspiring artists, Tyler emphasizes creating work that embodies truth and necessity, encouraging authentic expression over external validation. Is the influencer model broken? Consumers are drowning in five-star reviews and paid endorsements. But what if credibility, not clout, was the real driver of influence? In this episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Peter Winick sits down with Eric Shienkop, entrepreneur, author, and tech innovator. Eric built the world's largest community of unsigned musicians, helping them monetize their work through brand partnerships. Now, he's taking on another industry ripe for disruption—online reviews and influencer marketing. Eric's company, The Desire Company, is flipping the script. Instead of influencers with massive followings but little expertise, they partner with professionals—athletes, doctors, and industry specialists—who actually know their stuff. The result? Trustworthy product recommendations that resonate with consumers in a way traditional influencer marketing no longer does. Eric shares the evolution of his thought leadership journey, from struggling to get into boardrooms to becoming a bestselling author and sought-after speaker. He breaks down the steps that took him from white papers to keynotes to writing the book "Return of the Hustle: The Art of Marketing With Music" that made Microsoft come calling. If you're trying to cut through the noise, establish credibility, and build a business that thrives on trust, this conversation is packed with insights you won't want to miss. Three Key Takeaways: • Credibility Beats Popularity – Consumers are growing skeptical of traditional influencer marketing, making expert-driven recommendations more valuable than ever. • Thought Leadership Opens Doors – Writing books, publishing white papers, and speaking at events can transform expertise into opportunities and business growth. • Industries Ripe for Disruption – Outdated systems, like the current review and influencer models, create opportunities for innovation and trust-based marketing. Eric shows why getting the right influencer is more important than the one with the most followers. If you want to follow in his footsteps you'll have to know your audience, and not just in general terms. Check out this article by Peter Winick on how to clearly describe your ideal client and why being able to do so is critical.

On a cold rush hour morning, a good looking man, dressed in jeans and a baseball cap walked into a train station, carrying a violin case. He opened the case, dropped a few dollars in to encourage others to do the same. Over the next 45 minutes, he earned less than $35 for his performance. Most people simply walked by, barely stopping to listen to the classical violin piece, played flawlessly by the young man. Who was he? Joshua Bell, one of the world's most renowned musicians. As part of a social experiment, arranged by a writer from the Washington Post, he played for 45 minutes to see what would happen. The results are depressing. More than 1,000 people walked by missing a chance to hear this amazing musician perform. Depressing not just because they missed a once in a life time chance to hear Joshua Bell, but because their behavior is very typical of how we live our lives. We get so focused on the end game; we miss so much along the way. So the lesson for today, is not strictly business. Take a few minutes to listen to the music, explore something new, you and your business will be better for it.
