John Robb stands as a multifaceted figure in the British music scene—a musician, journalist, author, and cultural commentator whose influence spans decades. Emerging from the punk explosion of the late 1970s, Robb co-founded the post-punk band The Membranes in 1977, infusing their music with experimental noise and avant-garde sensibilities. After a hiatus, the band reformed in 2009, releasing critically acclaimed albums like Dark Matter/Dark Energy (2015) and What Nature Gives… Nature Takes Away (2019), often collaborating with choirs and scientists to create immersive live experiences . In the mid-1990s, Robb channeled his punk ethos into forming Goldblade, a band known for its high-octane performances and politically charged lyrics. Albums such as Rebel Songs (2005) and Mutiny (2008) showcased their commitment to social commentary through music. Goldblade's international tours, including groundbreaking performances in countries like Algeria, underscored their global appeal and Robb's dedication to bringing punk to diverse audiences . Beyond his musical endeavors, Robb has made significant contributions to music journalism. He founded the online platform Louder Than War, which evolved into a monthly magazine, providing a space for alternative music and culture. His writing credentials include being the first journalist to interview Nirvana and coining the term “Britpop.” Robb's literary works delve deep into music history, with titles like Punk Rock: An Oral History and The North Will Rise Again offering comprehensive insights into punk and Manchester's music scene . In 2023, Robb released The Art of Darkness: The History of Goth, a definitive exploration of the goth subculture, praised for its depth and detail. Building on this momentum, his forthcoming book, Live Forever: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Oasis, set for release on June 5, 2025, promises an in-depth look at one of Britain's most iconic bands. Drawing from exclusive interviews, including insights from Noel Gallagher, the book aims to capture the essence of Oasis's journey and their impact on British culture . Robb's multifaceted career reflects a relentless passion for music and its cultural ramifications. Whether through his bands, writings, or media appearances, he continues to influence and document the ever-evolving landscape of music. Episode #94 In this episode of the Awakened Heart Podcast, I sit down with Sean Bw Parker to dive into the complex world of cultural theory, exploring how universities shape societal values, and how groupthink and cancel culture have evolved. We discuss the role of feminism today, shifts in the political landscape, and why individualism and freedom of expression are crucial. We also touch on justice reform, the importance of truth in society, and the unique challenges young people face in navigating these issues. Throughout, we emphasize the need for open dialogue and the courage to speak one's truth in an increasingly polarized world. With over eight books, six albums, and a TEDx talk to his name, Sean's work spans cultural theory, art, media critique, and justice reform. For ten years, he lived in Istanbul, immersing himself in the music and culture scene, where he wrote for Time Out Istanbul and Louder Than War and taught English and cultural studies. Sean brings a centrist libertarian perspective, often tackling controversial topics like cancel culture, media, justice reform, and the nuances within progressive ideologies. His latest book, A Delicate Balance of Reason – Adventures In The Culture Wars, explores these issues in depth and was released this May, with an Audible version coming soon. Sean's thoughtful approach and diverse experiences make him the perfect guest for an eye-opening discussion today. Takeaways Cultural theory analyzes societal narratives beyond individual stories. Universities often promote a left-leaning agenda that influences students. Groupthink can lead to cancel culture and suppression of dissenting voices. Feminism is divided on issues related to gender identity and women's rights. The political landscape is shifting towards populism and individualism. Art and creativity are essential for expressing individual perspectives. Truth and honesty are crucial in navigating societal challenges. Justice reform is needed to address miscarriages of justice. The younger generation is malleable and needs guidance in critical thinking. Living with an awakened heart means embracing truth and individuality. Our Book Club guest this week is writer John Robb. John wears many hats - he runs the popular music website Louder Than War, he's a popular talking head and commentator of music and culture, he's written several books, and he's been in a couple punk bands. His latest is the massive endeavor, The Art of Darkness: The History of Goth which manages to explain the origins of the scene (Edgar Allen Poe, Marquis de Sade, Dionysus) and how that lead to the excellent music we all love (Adam Ant, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, etc). We debate what is and what isn't goth, why people gravitate to it, its morality and sexuality, and more. It's a great book and an incredible undertaking. John Robb has been one of my music journalism heroes for as long as I can remember, and so I was chuffed to speak to the Blackpool born Renaissance man on this episode of the podcast. John has a new book on the way imminently - that'll be March 17th - entitled The Art of Darkness: A History of Goth, and it's a thrilling deep dive into both the enduring Goth culture and the social, historical and political backdrop that creates the space for the aforementioned art of darkness to thrive. We also get into John's burgeoning Louder Than War empire, and his music making too, specifically with the enduring Membranes – and of course, this being John, a man with a brain almost as big as Robert Smith's hair, there's all sorts of other interesting tangents we stumble upon too. I interviewed the legendary English music Journalist, author, environmental activist and founding member for the perennial post-punk band The Membranes John Robb. When John is not touring with his band (they recently toured in Europe with The Stranglers, The Chameleons and Fields Of The Nephilim), he's presenting, moderating or writing for his popular UK music site Louder Than War. John has previously written the best-selling books “Punk Rock : An Oral History” and “The North Will Rise Again : Manchester Music City 1976-1996”. His latest opus is the 650-page “The Art Of Darkness : The History of Goth”, an in-depth account that he feels presents the first major and comprehensive overview of Goth music and culture and its lasting legacy. The book is built mainly around the 80s post-punk Goth period featuring interviews with Andrew Eldritch, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Cult, The Banshees, The Damned, Einstürzende Neubauten, Johnny Marr, Trent Reznor, Adam Ant, Laibach, The Cure, Nick Cave and many others. …it looks at the music, style and the political and social conditions that spawned the culture and the great music, fashions and attitudes - clubs that defined it, and is also a first-hand account of being there at some of the legendary gigs and clubs that made the scene happen. Joe Symes, along with Colin White, founded the band. It was while attending a local gig that the latter suggested to the former the name the “Loving Kind:” something that had been buried in his subconscious after listening the R.E.M song Get Up. After a sip or two of beer, the two agreed, set to work, adding bass player Alan Welsh. The music world now had a powerful, explosive and foot tapping power trio on their hands. An act one spectator described as “sounding like nine people on stage, not a mere three.”

Today I bring you one man's response to early life messages - Jay Stansfield, for decades now, has been putting a middle finger up to all those teachers that thought he couldn't do _____ (insert a host of activities). “You're not Creative, and here's Why” In fact, maybe someone planted that seed in your brain a long, long time ago too. Maybe someone keeps telling you, you can't draw. Or sing. Or organise things. Listen into my conversation with Jay as we explore how (despite all the negative messages) he's become an illustrator, musician, songwriter and creative multimedia artist and most recently, an entrepreneurial children's author. Jay, is a northern, 41 year-old with an 'IndyBest colouring books for creative kids' accolade in The Independent for his debut book Squibbles. Jay has also published Squibbles 2 and Meet The Squibbles and is now also a growing name in the emerging world of NFT collectibles. Check these out my friends! Jay's simultaneously a music artist with over 25 years in the music industry who has performed two John Peel sessions with his old band Element, played support to Grandaddy, Ultrasound, Dodgy, Mike and the Mechanics and had remixes by EMF, Republica and Martin Carr from The Boo Radleys, with international radio play across the world. He currently performs with altpunkrock group All Hail Hyena, who've been championed by Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music and John Robb via his acclaimed music blog Louder Than War and are currently promoting their new album 3 Organs Down, which they've released on a brand new format as the world's first ALBOOK™. Jay lives in Lancashire in the UK and is a proud father of two daughters. “School for Fathers Podcast is like a cold beer”
Post Punk legend and founder of The Membranes and Goldblade, John Robb. Before we go any further, the connection John and I had was not great. A million thanks to Jordon Zadorozny of Blinker The Star for helping to fix it as much as humanly possible. I'm releasing it, even with less than perfect audio because the conversation was great with some killer stories. John has been everywhere, done everything, and knows everybody! He tells me about playing punk gigs in church basements as a kid, playing illegal gigs in Czechoslovakia, and building a bass guitar out of driftwood. He's one of the few people I know who has been even more productive during the pandemic than before! He also discusses his music website Louder Than War and how he started interviewing musicians. THE DEAD FREIGHTS out of Southhampton, UK are on the show to introduce the band and discuss their releases “Fever and The Thunder” and “Suffering Safari”. This is a fun episode. The band reminds me of The Beatles in sound, attitude & character. You will enjoy the banter between the band & me. ~ Shay Band members Charlie & Louis (Louie) join us Band Press Release: Southampton quartet and local legends The Dead Freights announce their new single ‘Fever & The Thunder'. Recorded at Mi7 Studios with Daisy Palmer (Feverist, Paloma Faith) and mixed by Josh Ager (Beabadobee) with help from Pete Robertson (The Vaccines), the single comes straight after their previous single ‘Stray Dogs' which has received lots of radio support, media coverage and a Louder Than War premiere. The track combines disco beats and tasteful guitar techniques with a gritty production highlighting the band's signature, grubby sound. With frontman Charlie James emphasizing that “the lyrics act as a stream of consciousness”, the band aim to combine elements of disco (Fever) and traditional rock ‘n' roll (Thunder) whilst providing a catchy melody at the same time. “It's us running with the grunge disco thing. ‘Fever & The Thunder' is like a sleazy house-party with a constant groove.” Charlie James states. “'Fever & The Thunder' goes to the grungiest Disco places we have ever been,” Drummer Louis Duarte begins. “'Fever' could easily be a doth of the cap to Night Fever and my four to the floor (ish) beat in the chorus, like it or not, is definitely inspired by John Travolta's hips. But what if things get too metronomic? Well, we're no slaves to the grid baby! We stretch time in the final stages of this, just before the gut punch of an ending… I guess that's where the ‘Thunder' comes in' The band sold out two shows at Southampton's iconic venue The Stage Door and ‘Fever & The Thunder' is second in an exciting string of four releases. Next on the release agenda is "Batman". After recording a live video at Abbey Road Studios in the infamous Studio 2 (following in the footsteps of the band's biggest influence, The Beatles), The Dead Freights have headlined a This Feeling headline tour all over the U.K. which saw most nights sold out- including an unforgettable Nambucca show that sold out in record time. The band are kicking out hard with a string of new singles, show announcements and even managing to bag themselves a festival slot this year (despite that proving near-on impossible). With social distance measures in places, it is going to prove even harder to keep your hands off The Dead Freights. With good looks, charisma and bags of charm, they are a train that can't be stopped. PRESS RELEASE Novatines release music video for explosive new single ‘Honey' Bath-based alternative rock four-piece Novatines are due to release their latest explosive track ‘Honey' to SaySomething Records on September 30th. Jamie Beale - Vocals, Guitar Tom Cory - Vocals, Guitar, Synth Callum Moloney - Vocals, Drums Tom Turner - Bass Formed in the winter of 2017, the band immediately made a name for themselves on the UK circuit with their anthemic, high-octane rock songs, which saw them tour extensively throughout the UK and Europe on both headline and support tours, playing alongside the likes of Alabama 3, Arcane Roots, Von Hertzen Brothers and Sweet. Novatines' sound is a rebirth of classic British rock with influences from 90s American alternative rock and grunge. Influenced by bands like The Beatles and Foo Fighters, the group have been hotly tipped by Louder Than War as one of the ‘hottest new UK guitar bands'. ‘Honey', recorded live at Real World Studios is a no nonsense rock ‘n' roll slammer full of angst, adrenaline and frenetic noise. Produced by both the band and Andy Scott (Sweet), Honey is about “seeing through fads, trends and short lived ‘next big things' with no real substance. We live in such a throw away culture where we are told what we should like or dislike 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Honey is about taking yourself off of the conveyor belt and seeing things as they are”, explains lyricist Jamie Beale. ‘Honey' captures lightning in a bottle and shakes it up for good measure, creating an explosive cocktail of 90s grunge and 70's rock bleeding into the present day. Honey is due for release September 30th via SaySomething Records and will be available on all major platforms. Social Links Website: https://www.novatines.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Novatines/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/novatines Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/novatinesband/ My thoughts Honey opens with a fantastic riff that slaps you in the face to see if your paying attention, it's a track that hits the heights very quickly it does not mess around its straight to the point with punchy guitars, pounding dream beats and a great hook in the chorus, a great track very well mixed my only issue I wanted more, a track that needs to go into your playlist and will have you singing the chorus for a while You can find this episode and previous episode in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com

Paul Hanley was the drummer in Manchester legends The Fall from 1980-85 and now plays with Brix & The Extricated. He's studying for an English degree with the Open University and occasionally writes for Louder Than War. He's married with three children and once got 21 on Ken Bruce's 'PopMaster'. When British bands took the world by storm in the mid-sixties, the world turned and looked at London. Despite the fact that the most successful of these bands hailed from the North West corner of England, for the USA, London was the source of these thrilling new sounds. And in many ways it was - The Beatles, The Hollies and Herman's Hermits recorded all their hits with London-based producers, for London-based companies in London studios. And that's how it remained, until four Mancunian musicians became alive to the possibility of recording away from the capital. Against the prevailing wisdom, they opted to plough their hard-earned cash back into the city they loved in the form of proper recording facilities. Eric Stewart of The Mindbenders and songwriter extraordinaire Graham Gouldman created Strawberry Studios; Keith Hopwood and Derek Leckenby of Herman's Hermits crafted Pluto. Between them they gave Manchester a voice, and facilitated a musical revolution that would be defined by its rejection of the capital. This book tells the story of Manchester music through the prism of the two studio's key recordings. Of course that story inevitably takes in The Smiths, Joy Division, The Fall and The Stone Roses. But it's equally the story of 'Bus Stop' and 'East West' and 'I'm Not in Love'. It's the story of the Manchester attitude of L.S. Lowry, by way of Brian and Michael, and how that attitude rubbed off on The Clash and Neil Sedaka. Above all, it's the story of music that couldn't have been made anywhere else but Manchester.
The Wolfhounds special with Andrew Golding talking about life in music, indie pop and his new solo album Dragon Welding'. The Wolfhounds began as a slightly askew indie pop/rock band, and signed to the Pink label in 1986. First EP Cut the Cake was well enough received for the NME to include them on their C86 compilation album. After three singles and debut album Unseen Ripples From A Pebble on Pink,[1] they briefly moved to Idea Records for the Me single, then rejoined Pink's boss at his new label September Records. September soon evolved into Midnight Music which was the Wolfhounds' home for all subsequent releases. With original members Bolton and Clark replaced by David Oliver and Matt Deighton, the Wolfhounds' sound developed into a denser, less poppy sound.[citation needed] After a compilation of earlier material, second album proper Bright and Guilty was released in 1989, featuring the singles "Son of Nothing", "Rent Act" and "Happy Shopper". The sound progressed further with the albums Blown Away (also 1989) and Attitude (1990), which found them in Sonic Youth territory, interspersing raging guitars with elegant compositional exercises. This proved to be the final Wolfhounds release of the 80s, with the band splitting in early 1990. Golding and Stebbing formed Crawl, while Callahan hooked up with former Ultra Vivid Scene member Margaret Fiedler in Moonshake. Matt Deighton formed Mother Earth. The current line-up is David Callahan (guitar/vocals), Andy Golding (guitar/vocals), Peter Wilkins (drums) and Richard Golding (bass). The Wolfhounds reformed in 2005 for a gig to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of their first single "Cut the Cake" in 1985. In 2006, they were asked by Bob Stanley of St Etienne to play at the ICA in London, alongside Roddy Frame and Phil Wilson, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the NME cassette C86. They have continued to play live, re-energised when The Membranes asked them to be special guests at The Lexington in London, and in March 2012 played with Laetitia Sadier from Stereolab in support at a benefit to raise funds for the Timperley Frank Sidebottom memorial statue. An EP called EP001 was released on Vollwert-Records Berlin in April 2012 containing three songs that pre-date the band's first single but that were never recorded satisfactorily at the time. Of these songs, 'Skullface' has picked up a lot of radio play. The band released several 7" singles in 2013, included on new album Middle Age Freaks, released on Odd Box Records in 2014. Also in 2014 an anniversary limited-edition issue of Unseen Ripples from a Pebble (plus bonus tracks) was released by Optic Nerve Recordings. In October 2016, the Wolfhounds released their sixth album Untied Kingdom (...Or How to Come to Terms with Your Culture). Louder Than War rated it 9/10.

Despite their youth, the brothers have developed an intriguing, mature sound, which blends 1970s soulfulness with eerie vocal harmonies. Critics praised both the “haunting, ghostly nature” and the “undeniable charm” of their self-titled debut EP (Jan '17), which has also received support from BBC Introducing. Their new single, 'The Haze', written about John’s experience going in and out of hospital whilst undergoing a gruelling tonsillectomy, was released in July of this year, and has already been praised by Louder Than War magazine, and featured on US and Australian radio stations. https://www.facebook.com/orangesoulmusic/ https://soundcloud.com/orange_soul https://www.instagram.com/orangesoulinsta/ https://twitter.com/orangesoul_band Here are links to 'The Haze' on iTunes/Spotify - The Haze: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-haze-single/id1251583375 https://open.spotify.com/album/5ZlnAjY7bhuCeER9vO3aqO Digital By Birth Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/thekuzeeffect/ Yeti Tactics @jshermmusic instagram Follow me on instagram @1indienation Follow me on Twitter @Rachael Support the 1indienation podcast and get the iPhone/iPad App!
