GB2RS News Sunday, the 8th of June 2025   The news headlines: The RSGB releases a video to celebrate Volunteers' Week Get involved with the GR2HQ contest challenge Join the RSGB Regional Team   As Volunteers' Week comes to a close, the RSGB would like to thank its volunteers once again for all they do. As part of the week-long event, the Society released a video about the volunteer team at the RSGB National Radio Centre. These volunteers welcome over 80,000 visitors to the Centre every year and share amateur radio with them. Watch the video to discover the variety of things that they do as well as what they enjoy most about their role. You'll find the video at rsgb.org/volunteers-week, and on that web page, you'll also be able to read about several volunteers in other RSGB roles. If their stories have inspired you and you would like to give some time to support the RSGB and amateur radio, look at the vacancies on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/volunteers The RSGB Contest Committee is looking forward to the IARU HF Championship contest on the 12th and 13th of July. This is a great opportunity for both individuals and clubs to get involved. During the contest, Headquarters Stations represent their countries, and the RSGB's station GR2HQ will be run by a network of about a dozen stations around the UK and its islands. Building on the success of last year's GR2HQ Challenge, the RSGB Contest Committee has made some changes to encourage individual stations to work the GR2HQ station on each band-mode slot. Sharing your QSOs for scoring has also been made easier. The contest is open to both individuals and clubs, so why not encourage your club members to take part, whether they are regular contesters or not? Last year, thanks in part to those entering the GR2HQ Challenge, the RSGB Contest Committee improved its position from third to second and would like to improve that result even further. Could you take part and make a difference? For the full rules, go to the GR2HQ Challenge page on the Contest Committee website via rsgbcc.org The RSGB has several volunteer vacancies within the Regional Team. If you are passionate about the future of amateur radio and support the work of the Society, then apply now. These rewarding roles are an opportunity to support fellow radio amateurs in your area. Vacancies include District Representative positions in Staffordshire, Oxfordshire and Dorset. To view the full list of regional team volunteering vacancies, go to rsgb.org/volunteers. If you have questions about the District Representative roles, contact the Regional Representative in that region, or you can contact Board Liaison Nathan Nuttall, 2M0OCC, for a chat via 2m0occ@rsgb.org.uk A special interactive spy event is taking place on Father's Day, Sunday the 15th of June, at the RSGB National Radio Centre. You'll have the opportunity to become a spy hunter and, using your special gadget, will be tasked with finding hidden transmitters located around Bletchley Park. You'll need to decode Morse signals and uncover the location of the secret spy base. Two time slots are available, however, spaces are limited to 12 groups for each. Secure your place and treat your Dad, Grandad, or a father figure to a fascinating day out by going to bletchleypark.org.uk  and selecting the ‘What's on' option in the main menu. The activity is free to take part in, however, entry to Bletchley Park is required. Don't forget that RSGB members get free access to the historic site as a membership benefit. Download your voucher via rsgb.org/bpvoucher  BunkerFest 2025 is taking place on the 14th and 15th of June. This exciting international festival will bring together amateur radio operators from over 13 national Bunkers on the Air schemes. For rules and activation details, visit wwbota.org/bunkerfest25 The British Inland Waterways on the Air event will take place between Saturday, the 23rd and Monday, the 25th of August. The event is open to amateurs who use canals, towpaths, rivers, lakes or reservoirs for work or recreation. Registration for the event is now open. To sign up, visit Nunsfield House Amateur Radio Group's website at nharg.org.uk  and follow the ‘BIWOTA 2025' link. Are you called Nigel? If so, you can join other amateur Nigels who are making plans to operate a special event station at what is hoped to be the largest ever gathering of Nigels in the world. The event will run from the 20th to the 21st of September in Worcestershire. Using AM, FM, SSB and CW on the 2m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Note that 5W is the maximum power allowed in this contest. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 5th of June Last week's HF propagation was heavily influenced by unsettled geomagnetic conditions. This was caused by a combination of coronal mass ejections and a strong solar wind from a coronal hole. The coronal mass ejection, or CME for short, followed a solar flare from sunspot 4100 on the 31st of May at 0005 UTC. The explosion lasted more than three hours. Type 2 radio emissions from shock waves within the CME cloud suggested it was travelling at 1,938 kilometres per second, or 4.3 million miles per hour! Eventually, the Bz swung south. This meant that the interplanetary magnetic field more easily coupled with the Earth's magnetic field. The result was that the Kp index got up to 7.67 on the 1st of June. The auroral effects were reported as being due to a co-rotating interaction region, or CIR – a region in space where fast and slow solar wind streams collide, creating a compressed area with enhanced plasma and magnetic fields. The Kp index was 7 or more for four three-hour periods. This pushed the maximum usable frequency over a 3,000km path below 14 MHz at times, which wasn't conducive to good DXing. On Thursday, the 5th of June, it looked like we were past the worst, and the Kp index was back to a more reasonable 2.33. Meanwhile, the solar flux index declined from a recent high of 164 on the 31st of May to a low of 134 on the 5th of June. HF propagation was being driven by the geomagnetic conditions, with a general lowering of the maximum usable frequency. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will start the week at around 155 and remain around 150. More worryingly, geomagnetic conditions are again predicted to be unsettled after this weekend, with a maximum Kp index of 6 on the 13th of June. So, unsettled geomagnetic conditions, plus the HF summer doldrums, mean HF DX via F2-layer propagation may be hard to find. So, make the most of the 10m Sporadic-E short-skip openings instead! And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO Last week offered an example of what a good Sporadic-E season should look like. On Tuesday, the 3rd of June in particular, the 6m band sounded like the 20m band and, at its peak, activity extended all the way up to the 2m band. This coming week has an unsettled flavour with several areas of low pressure and weather fronts involved, together with heavy showers in between. This means rain scatter will be a supported mode on the GHz bands. There is a slight hint of a slow improvement during the week, but not really any high pressure showing up until right at the end of the coming week. So, there is a chance of Tropo propagation for the 2nd 144MHz Backpackers Contest on Sunday, the 15th. Meteor scatter is always interesting in June, with four showers to play with during the month. The early ones are the Arietids, which peaked on Saturday, the 7th of June – good news for the 50MHz UK Activity Contest on Thursday the 12th. The Zeta Perseids peak tomorrow, the 9th of June, and there will be a couple of other showers later in the month. This is probably also why the Sporadic-E prospects improve about now. Aurora has also been much in evidence recently. Despite the light summer evenings and short nights, the chances of radio aurora continue to be important, so monitor for high Kp values above about 5. The advice for some who have not yet worked Sporadic-E is to check the 6m band around teatime. There are, of course, usually two primary periods when Sporadic-E is more likely: one in the morning, and the second in late afternoon and evening. A morning opening may repeat in the afternoon in similar locations, although usually the weather trigger may have moved a little in the meantime. Check the jet stream charts at propquest.co.uk  by following the Sporadic-E blog tab. The daily commentary will highlight the important directions each day. You can hopefully test out the system on Thursday, the 12th of June, in the 50MHz UK Activity Contest. EME path losses were at their maximum with apogee, when the Moon is at its furthest from the Earth, on Saturday, the 7th of June. Declination reaches a minimum on Wednesday, the 11th, so Moon windows are short and peak elevation is low. 144MHz sky noise peaks around the 11th and 12th of June. EME conditions were classed as poor this weekend and are classed as poor-to-moderate on the 14th and 15th of June. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined around the campfire by folklorist, YouTuber, and all-round champion for Staffordshire, Jack Raven! As anyone familiar with his documentaries and video essays will know, 'Jack Raven' is a character - a talking, animated corvid - inspired by the 20th century Staffordshire folklorist and musician Jon Raven (he of the Black Country Three) who was, alas, only human. In addition to creating and maintaining the Staffordshire Folklore YouTube channel though, and having a sharp beak and pinions as dark as shadows, Jack also manages two other YouTube channels dedicated to Staffordshire's history and folk heritage.Plus, he also collects folklore from his local area, and, while also being very funny, creative, imaginative, and generous, he is truly dedicated and careful in his research too. That this episode is slightly longer than the average Local Legends interview speaks to how enjoyable he is to talk to, and his passion for Staffordshire's history and legends. We could have gone on for hours! It's a fascinating conversation, featuring, in addition to plenty else, Black Country chain makers, Staffordshire potteries, infamous poisoners, Hands of Glory, and the reality behind the many unsettling legends of Cannock Chase...You can learn more about Jack and his work through his Campsite here, and the comparative map tool he mentions in the conversation is available here. But for right now, let us settle in, nice and close, around the Three Ravens campfire and listen in to a chat about crumbling Gothic ruins, the infamous case of Staffordshire ne'er do well William Booth, the life of a folklore YouTuber, and so much more, with a true Local Legend: Jack Raven.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. And, should he start playing clubs he thinks look cool, rather than have any function? After that, we take a brief look at the Tour's take-up of zero torque putters. What has been the reaction from Tour players to this growing trend, and is the argument for zero torque putters starting to win more people over?  Ask The Pod wants to understand why iron shafts are getting longer and longer. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Hosted on Acast. Cannock Chase, Staffordshire's infamous former Royal Forest, is steeped in chilling legends and unexplainable phenomena. From supernatural creatures like werewolves, Black Dogs, British Big Cats, and even Bigfoot, to UFO sightings and encounters with demonic entities—this place has it all. In the 1940s, the eerie Pig Man made his debut, and many have claimed to see the terrifying Black-Eyed Girl. The forest is haunted by the cries of children, believed to be the victims of the infamous murderer Raymond Leslie Morris, while the enigmatic Lady of the Chase—tall, slim, and hypnotic—lingers in the shadows, captivating visitors with her dark, haunting gaze. In this spine-chilling episode of the True Hauntings Podcast, Anne & Renata lace up their boots and venture deep into the Chase. Is this truly a portal to another dimension? In episode 275 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Anthony Bedward. Anthony is a qualified person-centred psychotherapist and the Founder of a2btherapy. In this episode we chart his vast professional journey, from working as a mentor in a learning provision for young people expelled from school, to applying for a 10-week course at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute based at the University of Staffordshire and then completing a three year degree there afterwards. He then landed two part-time jobs, one working for a company that delivered Princes Trust courses to 16–25-year-olds and another as a youth worker. Anthony then found a new job, working with survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) at a charity called Imara Nottingham where they work with children and families to recover from the impact of sexual abuse on their lives. He worked there for eight months, before leaving to join the job he is in now and went onto set up A2BTherapy. We also discuss the lack of male therapists in the mental health space and why we need more men like Anthony, not just to help men, but working-class men and especially working-class black men like Anthony who will hopefully be able to put their trust in. We then explore his dyslexia diagnosis and how its shaped his life pre and post-diagnosis and the work he does with A2B. For Anthony's mental health journey, we discuss: the impact that being sexually abused as an adult had on his life, the importance of boundaries, figuring out his triggers and the levels of mental toughness you need to do the work he does. Neil Brownsword is one of the most intriguing – and uncompromising – ceramic artists currently practicing in the UK. His work is inspired by the de-industrialisation of his home city, Stoke-on-Trent, and, appropriately enough, his career in ceramics began when he worked as an apprentice in the Wedgwood factory as a 16 year old in the mid 1980s. Subsequently, he went on to study at the University of Cardiff and the Royal College of Art. Neil's research examines the manufacturing histories of North Staffordshire's ceramic industry, and the effects globalisation has had upon people, place and traditional skills in recent decades. Over the years, he has won numerous awards and exhibited across the globe, while at the same time maintaining an important career in education. He is currently a professor of ceramics at the University of Staffordshire. In this episode we talk about: his latest show at the Crafts Study Centre in Farnham, Surrey; historical copying in the ceramics industry; inducing failure; working at Wedgwood on a YTS scheme; being good at art in school; creating his early, sexually-charged pieces; not selling pots; why his work changed radically at the turn of the century; escaping the ‘stranglehold' of narrative; becoming ‘a post-industrial factory manager'; bridling against ‘factory tourism'; putting industrial artisans on a cultural platform; investigating the ‘marginalised potential of the past'; and why it's important to safeguard rather than preserve skill.Support the show

In the summer of 1968, an English newspaper, The Sunday Times, proposed a contest - The Golden Globe Yacht Race - which challenged all comers to attempt the first single handed non-stop circumnavigation of the world. Many entered, but only one man, Robin Knox-Johnson, completed the sail, securing the Golden Globe Trophy and a cash prize of 5000 pounds. This caught the attention of Dougal Robertson (a former sailor in his late forties) along with his wife Lyn and their children - 18 year old Anne, 16 year old Douglas, and 12 year old twin boys Neil and Sandy, who together, followed the Golden Globe race from their dairy farm in rural Staffordshire, England. Staffordshire Hoard, 2009 In 2009, Terry Herbert, a passionate amateur treasure hunter, was exploring a plowed field near Hammerwich, Staffordshire, England, when his  metal detector signaled a significant discovery. Over five days of diligent excavation, Herbert and the landowner, Fred Johnson, unearthed a staggering 3,500 military artifacts, collectively known as the Staffordshire Hoard. This extraordinary find included over 11 pounds of gold, 3 pounds of silver, and semi-precious garnets, possibly sourced from as far as Sri Lanka or Afghanistan. Dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries, during the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia, the hoard is believed to have been buried around 875 A.D., when the region was under Viking threat.     2. The Le Catillon II Hoard, 2012 Reg Mead and Richard Miles, metal detection enthusiasts from Jersey, embarked on a decades-long quest after hearing a farmer's tale in the early 1980s. The farmer claimed to have discovered silver coins while plowing his field on the British island of Jersey. Mead and Miles, armed with perseverance, obtained permission to search the field for a mere 10 to 15 hours each year after the harvest. Their dedication bore fruit in 2012 when they unearthed 68,000 coins, along with gold neck torcs and glass beads. These treasures, dating back to 30 B.C. to 40 B.C., were buried by the Coriosolitae tribe of Celts, likely fleeing from a Roman invasion led by Julius Caesar. The Le Catillon II Hoard stands as the largest collection of gold jewelry and Celtic coins ever found.   3. St. Albans Hoard, 2012 In 2012, novice metal detectorist Westley Carrington ventured into a farm field in Berkhamsted, England, armed with a beginner's metal detector. His discovery turned out to be one of the largest hoards of Roman gold coins ever uncovered in Great Britain Jesus Introduction ·         This chapter forms a composite picture of the kingdom of God o   Responses to it o   Rejection of it o   Judgement of all people o   Personal responses to it o   The value of it ·         It can also form a historical outline: o   Planting of the seeds o   Varied responses o   Small beginnings o   Infiltration of the gospel throughout the Roman empire o   Individual responses and value of the kingdom o   Final judgment These parables are only found in Matthew 1.      The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl 44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. These stories build on what Jesus has taught about how things are “hidden” and “secret.”  Some find the gospel, others don't.  The other parables talk about the impact or spread or nature of the gospel, these two talk about the value to individuals.  The treasure ·         People hid valuables in the ground, there were no banks or vaults to provide safety. o   Genghis Khan §  Khan was reported to have given himself a front row seat for the mayhem at Merv. He sat on a golden throne and watched as men were dragged before him and executed. It was said to have been a ‘memorable day for shrieking and weeping and wailing'. The invaders tortured the wealthy citizens of Merv so they'd give up their money and jewels.  One source puts the number of dead in the Merv massacre at 700,000, while a contemporary Persian chronicler estimated the number of corpses at a staggering 1.3 million. Khan apparently ordered each of his soldiers to kill at least 300 people. ·         He stumbles on it ·         He knows he's found something amazing ·         He sells all out of self-interest Feb. 25, 2014, 12:53 PM MST / Updated Feb. 25, 2014, 12:54 PM MST A Northern California couple out walking their dog on their Gold Country property stumbled across a modern-day bonanza: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree.   Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, said David Hall, co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them.   Although the face value of the gold pieces only adds up to about $27,000, some of them are so rare that coin experts say they could fetch nearly $1 million apiece. The pearl ·         This is a person who is seeking actively ·         He is familiar with prices and value ·         He realizes that this is the only one he needs to own ·         Once you have the gospel, you don't need anything else ·         Share:  Silver Coins These stories emphasize that only the wholehearted get to enjoy the treasure.  You have to go all in, sell out and grab hold of what God is offering you.  Jesus specifically says that in Luke 14:33 “In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.”   How's your response to the gospel? Whether you've stumbled on it or have been searching for it these stories show that once you discover it, you have to determine the incomparable value of Jesus and then divest of anything necessary to get the treasure. The trouble is we don't value Jesus highly enough.  We want him and a whole lot more. It's time to repent and get baptized.   If you are already a disciple and have the treasure: Ø  Do you gripe and complain how hard it is to follow Jesus? Ø  Do you complain how much you've had to give up to follow him? Ø  Are you considering selling Jesus for something in the world, like Judas?   If you have Jesus, you have everything you need. There once was a fabulously wealthy man who loved his son above all things. To stay close to his son, they began to build an art collection together. Every spare minute, they were out at auctions and sales acquiring rare works of art: everything from Picasso to Raphael. By the time the Vietnam conflict broke out, they built one of the rarest most valuable collections in the world. A letter came one day informing the son he had been drafted. The father offered to pull some strings, but the son felt compelled to serve his country as his father and grandfather did before him.  The son went off to war, but he wrote his dad every day. One day the letters stopped. The father's worst fears were realized when he received a telegram from the war department informing him his son had been killed while attempting to rescue another soldier. About six months later, there was a knock at the door. A young soldier with a large package under his arm said, "Sir, you don't know me, but I am the man your son saved on that faithful day he died deep in the jungles of Viet Nam. He had already saved many lives that day, and as he was carrying me off the battlefield, he was shot through the heart and died instantly. Your son was my friend and we spent many a lonely night "in country talking about you and your love for art." The young soldier held out his package and said, "I know this isn't much and I'm not much of an artist, but I wanted you to have this painting I've done of your son as I last remember him. The father tore open the package and fought back the tears as he gazed at a portrait of his one and only son. He said, "You have captured the essence of my son's smile in this painting and I will cherish it above all others." The father hung the portrait over his mantle. When visitors came to his home, he always drew attention to the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other masterpieces. When the father died the news went out that the entire collection was being offered at an exclusive private auction. Collectors and art experts from around the world gathered for the chance of purchasing one of them. The first painting on the auction block was the soldier's modest rendering of his son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel and asked someone to start the bidding. The sophisticated crowd scoffed and demanded the Van Gogh's and the Rembrandts be brought forth. The auctioneer persisted. "Who will start the bidding? $200? $100?" The crowd continued to turn up their noses, waiting to see the more serious paintings. Still the auctioneer solicited, "The son! The son! Who will take the son? Finally, a squeaky voice from the back said, "I'll bid $10 for the son." The bidder was none other than the young soldier the son had died saving. He said, "I didn't come to buy anything and all I have is $10 to my name, but I bid it all." The auctioneer continued seeking a higher bid, but the angry crowd began to chant, "Sell it to him and let's get on with the auction." The auctioneer pounded the gavel and sold the painting for the bid of $10. An eager buyer from the second row bellowed, "Finally, on with the auction." And just then the auctioneer said, "The auction is now officially closed." The hostile crowd demanded to know how after coming, all this way could the auction possibly be over? The president of the auctioning company came to the microphone and said, "When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a stipulation in the will I could not divulge until now. According to the wishes of the deceased only the painting of the son was to be sold today and whoever takes the son gets it all. So today, for $10 this young man has bought one of the world's most priceless art collections and the entire estate in which it is housed -- auction closed." And with the swing of the gavel, the crowd sat in stunned silence staring at the young soldier. “Whoever takes the son, gets it all” If you have the Son, you have it all.     2.     The Parable of the Net 47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ·         This is similar to the parable of the weeds. ·         There will never be a time when you as a disciple will be surrounded only by “righteous” people. ·         It's like a lake where everyone is swimming free. ·         There is a net slowly moving us in one direction, but we all have freedom now. So many people are like the optimist falling from a tenth story window, who called out cheerfully as he passed each story, going down, “All right so far!”   51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked. “Yes,” they replied. 52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”   ·         When you become a disciple, you are like a teacher of the law who has access to treasures both old and new. ·         Why wouldn't you want to share those with others? Ø  Share the word study and discipleship study this fall with someone   3.     A Prophet Without Honor 53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. ·         This is a variation on the saying, “Familiarity breeds contempt.” ·         I should have read this scripture before I decided to plant a church in my hometown. ·         I somehow missed this ·         Many people became Christians, my family didn't make it. ·         Show picture of my hometown church. You know how many family members responded?  None   Next Steps ·         Pay any price to get Jesus and his kingdom ·         Pull out treasures old and new and teach someone the word and discipleship study this fall ·         Prepare for the judgment.  Make sure you have a real relationship with Christ.  Repent and get baptized immediately.

Story One – Ghosts of Flight 401 During previous episodes, we have explored several tales involving vehicles which have become closely associated with the paranormal. In this story we will finally be adding an aircraft to the list of allegedly haunted transports as we retell the story of the Ghosts of Flight 401. Story Two – The Curse of Clapham Woods Previously, we have explored numerous instances of supernatural activity witnessed at Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, many of which are directly connected to Castle Ring, the remnants of an Iron Age fort at the heart of that region. This week, we journey to another such site, located 200 miles away in southeast England, known for similar disturbing occurrences. Join us as we delve into the Curse of Clapham Wood.
