Glynn Vivian Art Gallery - On Air
Audio introduction to A Day at the Hunt by Ingrid Murphy

Glynn Vivian Art Gallery - On Air

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 11, 2026 4:32

A Day at the Hunt by Ingrid Murphy, made in 2016, is a white and gold ceramic Staffordshire flatback with interactive companion film linked by QR code. It is 33 cm high and 20 cm wide and depicts Ingrid and her father Brendan as two hunters. The uncanny likeness was created through the 3D scanning & 3D printing of Ingrid and her father's heads and slip casting them onto a replica of the original Hunter flatback from the 19th Century. A flatback is a sculptural decorative figure that is three dimensional from all sides except the back, which is flat, designed to be positioned on a mantlepiece. Ingrid and Brendan's heads have been printed in proportion to the rest of the work, and don't seem out of place. Both figures are wearing traditional hunting costumes, consisting of knee length tunics, knee high boots, sashes across the body, and hunting horns. There are gold leaf highlights at the top of the collars of the coats, the top of the boots, belt buckles, and hunting horns. In the background between the two figures is a textured old tree trunk. Brendan is seated on the left, he has short, cropped hair and looks to be quite elderly, with a kind and thoughtful face. He gazes directly ahead, his left hand on his knee. Ingrid stands on the right, she has short, bobbed hair, and her body is turned towards her father, her eyes are gazing down at him in admiration. Her right arm is raised, holding up a square sign, onto which a black QR code is printed. The piece is interactive, as when you scan the QR code, a five-minute companion colour film plays of Ingrid and Brendan visiting the Hunt Museum, Ireland, in June 2016. The car journey with her father was central to this work. Initially, Ingrid had thought it would be about the museum visit, but watching the footage she realised it was actually about the journey, because that was their life together. The light-hearted film is punctuated with humorous interactions between father and daughter. For instance, there is a miscommunication when they pass a shop called Mace next to a church; Ingrid is looking at the shop and Brendan is looking at the church and she speaks about Mace and he comments on Mass. They get lost on the journey; there are touching moments of Ingrid's dad just being himself, he walks into a room and looks around as if he's going to say something amazing. Then he says ‘Jesus, they got new carpets I'd say', oblivious to the beautiful objects they are surrounded by on the walls. On the drive home, a farmer is trying to catch cattle which have escaped a field onto the road. Brendon was a butcher and in Ingrid's family there is a running joke whenever something happened with cattle, they would always say it was their revenge, they were coming back for him! Ingrid Murphy's work focuses on augmenting ceramic artefacts with a range of interactive technologies. She exploits and plays with the boundaries of ceramic material to create innovative and playful interactions and experiences. She uses sound, humour and autobiographical elements, creating engaging and playful ceramic works, which also bring to life the deeper historical and social histories of ceramic objects and their intended uses. A Day at the Hunt was commissioned by the Hunt Museum, Ireland, to be part of the Irish Contemporary Ceramics Collection. A version of this work was acquired by Glynn Vivian Art Gallery through the Wakelin Award 2022 in partnership with the Friends of the Glynn Vivian, selected by Swansea based artist and lecturer, Catrin Webster.

Water is a main topic of conversation amongst farmers at the moment - because it's in short supply. Memories of the wet winter have been dried out by the recent hot weather and those growing crops or indeed relying on grass to feed their animals are all talking about rain which hasn't materialised. Environment Agency figures show that rainfall across England last month was 38% of the long term average. However, some areas got far less. We speak to an expert about what this means for water abstraction and growers who irrigate their crops over the summer using water from rivers or aquifers.Food prices keep rising - industry bodies suggest an increase of 9 or 10% by the end of the year. The cost of energy, diesel, fertiliser and other farming inputs have been on the rise – with more inflation expected to come. All week we've been looking at local food systems. It isn't always easy to connect households on a limited budget with fresh, healthy produce, but a farming family from Staffordshire have made that their mission. They've set up Farm Fresh Revolution, a project which delivers discounted fruit, vegetables and meat to local schools to inspire families to eat more healthily.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Almost all inbound from LinkedIn."Honestly, it's wild. Compared to the stress of year one... coming into year three with that kind of quarter. Why do so many of our prayers seem to go unanswered? John Mark tackles one of the most difficult tensions in the Christian life: how to square Jesus's bold promise of "ask anything in my name and I will do it" with the reality of unanswered prayer. He explores fifteen reasons our prayers might not be answered the way we expect and closes by introducing the ancient practice of lament as a way to meet God honestly in our pain.Key Scripture Passages: John 14v12-14; John 15v7, 16; John 16v23-24; Psalm 13; Psalm 66v18; Isaiah 58This podcast and its episodes are paid for by The Circle, our community of monthly givers. Season 38 examines one of Victorian England's most infamous murderers: William Palmer, the Rugeley Poisoner. This four-part series traces his crimes from gambling addiction to serial murder—and the groundbreaking forensic investigation that brought him to justice. The Fatal WagerNovember 1855. A man lies dying in Room 10 of the Talbot Arms inn. His back arches off the mattress. His jaw locks. Every muscle seizes at once.John Parsons Cook had won big at the Shrewsbury races just days earlier. His horse Polestar crossed the finish line first, putting nearly a thousand pounds in his pocket. He should have been celebrating.Instead, he's being murdered—slowly, methodically—by his own friend and physician.Dr. William Palmer stands beside the bed, taking Cook's pulse. He doesn't call for help. He waits. The VictimJohn Parsons Cook was twenty-eight years old in 1855. Born into comfortable circumstances, he inherited enough money from his father to live without working. He trained for the law but never practiced—the racing circuit called to him instead.Cook followed the horse racing meets across England: Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Chester. He owned horses. He wagered heavily. He lived for the thundering hooves and the roaring crowds. But Cook suffered from chronic poor health. Stomach troubles plagued him. This made him dependent on physicians—a dependency that would prove fatal when his racing companion William Palmer decided he needed to die.The CrimeWilliam Palmer was a surgeon, a family man, and a serial killer.By November 1855, Palmer owed more than twenty thousand pounds to moneylenders. His gambling addiction had consumed him. He had already murdered for money—his wife Anne (insurance payout: thirteen thousand pounds), his brother Walter (insurance claim pending), possibly his mother-in-law, and at least four of his own infant children. When Cook won at Shrewsbury, Palmer saw an opportunity. The two men traveled together back to Palmer's hometown of Rugeley. Cook took his usual room at the Talbot Arms—directly across the street from Palmer's house.Palmer began visiting Cook immediately, administering "treatments" for his illness. Each time Cook improved, another dose sent him back to agony.Cook suspected. He told friends: "I believe that damn Palmer has been dosing me." But suspicion wasn't proof, and Palmer was a doctor. Doctors could be trusted. The InvestigationWhat followed Cook's death would transform British forensic science and create new legal precedent.Dr. Alfred Swaine Taylor, England's foremost toxicologist, examined Cook's remains. He found no strychnine in the body—the poison metabolized too quickly. But the symptoms were unmistakable: tetanic convulsions, locked jaw, arched back.Taylor's testimony established a critical principle: absence of poison does not equal absence of poisoning. Clinical symptoms and circumstantial evidence could establish murder even when the weapon couldn't be found.Palmer's trial became so notorious that Parliament passed special legislation—the Central Criminal Court Act 1856, forever known as "Palmer's Act"—to move the case from Staffordshire to London's Old Bailey.Thirty-two medical experts testified. The jury deliberated eighty-two minutes.Verdict: Guilty.Historical ContextThe Palmer case exposed the vulnerability of Victorian society to medical murderers. Physicians held almost unquestioned authority. Patients trusted them with their lives—literally.Palmer exploited this trust systematically. His medical knowledge allowed him to choose poisons that were difficult to detect, calculate doses that would kill without immediate suspicion, and explain away symptoms as natural illness. The case accelerated the development of forensic toxicology across Europe. Scientists raced to develop more sensitive tests for alkaloid poisons like strychnine.Sources consulted: Old Bailey Online trial transcripts (May 1856); The Times contemporary coverage; British Newspaper Archive; Oxford Dictionary of National Biography; forensic toxicology historical analysis.ResourcesPrimary Sources:Old Bailey Online: Trial of William Palmer (May 1856) — oldbaileyonline.orgBritish Newspaper Archive coverage of Rugeley poisoner caseFurther Reading:Katherine Watson, "Poisoned Lives: English Poisoners and Their Victims" (2004)Robert Graves, "They Hanged My Saintly Billy" (1957) — literary treatmentCrisis Resources:For concerns about elder financial abuse or medical exploitation: Adult Protective ServicesSupport the ShowIf Foul Play brings you into history's darkest corners, consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. A new report says that the presence of microplastics in seafood has been overstated by the media. The paper, by researchers at Heriot-Watt University, says although media reports tended to concentrate on seafood contamination, the levels of microplastics in seafood is no greater than in other foodstuffs. It also says that dust and indoor air contain more microplastic particles than food. All week, we're taking a closer look at county council tenant farms. These farms have traditionally been a first step on the ladder, often for young aspiring farmers to get a foothold in agriculture. However county council tenancies have become harder to find and in recent years many cash-strapped councils have sold off a significant number of their farms. Not so in Staffordshire, where one young farmer Tom Chapman is building up his herd of sheep after securing a tenancy. Farm machinery manufacturers who export to the United States say their trade is being made 'almost impossible' after tariffs on steel and aluminium were extended. Originally tariffs on steel and aluminium were just for bulk items, but now, if a UK-made tractor is exported to the US, every steel or aluminium component - down to individual nuts and bolts - has to be taxed on the basis of where it came from, so the correct overall tariff payment is made. We speak to the Agricultural Engineers Association.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

On this day in Tudor history, 18 September 1535, Henry Brandon, 2nd Duke of Suffolk, was born at Chartley in Staffordshire. The eldest son of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and Catherine Willoughby, Henry's life was full of promise, until it was heartbreakingly cut short. Educated alongside Prince Edward (the future Edward VI), Henry thrived at court: he carried the orb at Edward's coronation, ran at the ring, and studied at Cambridge under some of the greatest humanist tutors of the day. He was a young noble who seemed destined for greatness. But in the summer of 1551, the dreaded sweating sickness struck. Within hours, Henry and his younger brother Charles were dead, snuffing out the Brandon male line in one cruel blow. In this podcast, I share Henry's brief but brilliant story, his education, his role at court, and the tragedy that ended his family's hopes. From his meteoric rise at Elizabeth's court to his brutal and ill-fated campaign in Ireland, Walter seemed destined for greatness. But at just 37, he died suddenly in Dublin in 1576. Official cause? Dysentery. The rumours? Poison… perhaps even at the hands of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester—who later married Walter's widow, Lettice Knollys. In this episode, I trace Walter's journey from Chartley heir to Irish commander, explore his marriage into the Boleyn-Knollys family, and ask: Why did his Irish venture turn so grim?
