In this episode of The Self-Employed Life, I had the great pleasure of speaking with occupational health psychologist Dr. Christina Guthier, author of Joyfully Exhausted, about the often misunderstood concept of burnout. We discuss the idea that not all exhaustion is bad, explore the difference between joyful and harmful exhaustion, and examine the effort-reward imbalance that many self-employed people face. Christina emphasizes the importance of managing our energy and recovering from hidden efforts we may not even realize are draining us. Our conversation is a refreshing reminder that it's okay — and even healthy — to love your work, as long as you prioritize recovery and recognize your limits. Since childhood, Christina was fascinated to observe different states of exhaustion in adults after work (including unpaid care work). At Ruhr-University Bochum, she majored in organizational psychology, conducted corporate social responsibility (CSR) field-research as student assistant at the marketing department, and worked at eligo GmbH where she helped develop recruiting software. During her M.Sc. Psychology at Heidelberg University, she majored in Organizational Behaviour and Adaptive Cognition learning a lot about the complexity of performance ratings and leadership behavior as well as cognitive biases and decision heuristics. At the same time, Christina also completed her train-the-trainer certificate during her internship at the career services and development department at Mannheim Business School. Then she focused on occupational health psychology (particularly on burnout research) during her PhD at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. Christina's PhD thesis on "How to create healthier study and work environments" got awarded with the Alfred Teves dissertation award 2020. Additionally, her meta-analysis on the reciprocal relationship between job stressors and burnout (published in Psychological Bulletin) got awarded with the Schmidt-Hunter Meta-Analysis Award 2022 by the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (division of the American Psychological Association). Finally, as a self-employed scientist, she has started to translate (her) research insights into actionable advice by giving a TEDx talk, getting interviewed for German media outlets (e.g., Der Spiegel, deutschlandfunk nova), and writing articles for different journals and magazines (e.g., Leader to Leader, change magazine). Additionally, she has supported organizations as a speaker, trainer, and coach with shifting their mindsets regarding exhaustion and recovery. 391 Stories and Connection It is vital to our own communities that we remember our stories and share them with one another, not to dwell on regrets and what ifs, but to reach out and connect with one another so that we all can learn and grow together, and hopefully create more grand stories on the paths we walk together. In this revisited episode, Sarah Elkins and Lee Keylock discuss their own stories and how they have healed through sharing stories and listening to the stories that others share with us. Highlights Connecting with people through sharing stories. Healing from trauma through stories and the community that sharing those stories creates. The changing paths our decisions create and how we should live in the moment and not dwell on what ifs. Greet the world and the challenges offered with open minds and a willingness to learn. Quotes “No regrets. Life is sliding doors right? If it's meant to be, it's meant to be.” “We're perpetual students, right? I've never approached anything I've ever done as an authority on anything.” “It's not enough to just hear stories. That can be brilliant and beautiful and life changing and you can have those moments, but when we work with youth we want them to think about how they can use stories to think about themselves, their communities, and the world and their place in it, and how they can become agents of change.” About Lee Lee Keylock is Director of Global Programs at Narrative 4 and oversees the coordination and administration of all aspects of N4's ongoing programmatic development. Originally from Britain, Lee immigrated to the United States in 1989 and taught English at Newtown High School in Connecticut for thirteen years. He has served as an adjunct professor teaching Creative Writing and Composition at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, where he also earned his MFA in Creative Writing. Connect with Lee on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram! And make sure you check out his website Narrative 4! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!
Are you stuck in indecision, constantly searching for clarity but not sure where to look? In this episode of the Lead Your Life Podcast, I'm sharing two powerful Universal Laws—Polarity and Non-Resistance—that will completely reframe the way you approach confusion, chaos, and decision-making in your life and business. These laws aren't just spiritual concepts. They're practical tools that, when understood, will help you let go of the fight and start receiving the clarity, momentum, and support that's already available. I've seen it in my own life and with clients over and over again: resistance blocks the very breakthrough you're asking for. So let's get real about where you're pushing, what you're avoiding, and how to shift your energy to finally move forward. ☑️ The real reason clarity and confusion exist in the same energetic space ☑️ How resistance shows up in sneaky, disguised ways (hello, planner shopping!) ☑️ What happens when you stop trying to control the outcome and start trusting the process If you've been spinning in self-doubt or circling the same decision without movement, this episode is your sign to stop pushing and start aligning. And if the message resonated, know this: you don't have to figure it all out first before saying yes to your next level. Ready to say yes to your clarity? Join me for the Cast Your Vision Retreat happening October 23rd–26th in Sandpoint, Idaho. Together, we'll turn these laws into aligned action, practical vision, and bold movement. Growing a group practice starts with your very first hire, but who should that person be? In today's episode, I sit down with Nicole McCance, and we get real about the mistakes that can make or break your expansion plans.Nicole sold her group practice for multiple seven figures after scaling to 55 therapists in just three years! Have you ever felt completely lost about what to do next in your business, even though you know you can't keep doing what you've been doing? You're not alone. In this episode, I share the story of Elena (not her real name), a virtual assistant who looked incredibly successful on paper - great clients, solid income, consistent referrals - but was completely drained by working entire weekends for client events with no additional compensation. They get stuck in business models and offers that technically work but slowly drain the life out of them. If you've been feeling guilty for not wanting "good work" anymore, this episode will help you understand that wanting something more aligned isn't selfish, it's growth.Key Points Covered:✨ Why feeling guilty about not wanting good work is actually a sign of evolution✨ The 5 specific signs you've outgrown your current business model✨ How poor boundaries justify themselves in service-based businesses✨ Why procrastination might be your nervous system protecting you from misaligned work✨ The difference between being ungrateful and being ready to grow✨ A simple 5-category assessment to evaluate where you stand✨ How to start making strategic shifts without losing your income If you're ready to stop feeling guilty about outgrowing your current work and start building something that actually fits who you've become, this episode will give you permission to honor your growth and take the next step forward.Remember: outgrowing your business model isn't something to feel guilty about, it's something to celebrate and respond to.Send us a text Thank you for being a part of the Soulpreneur Scaling Stories community!FREE RESOURCES

In this episode of The Money Coach School—a money feminist podcast for women coaches and entrepreneurs— I'm breaking down the small, often-overlooked choices that can silently drain your revenue, limit your profit, and keep your business hovering at “just enough.” These silent profit leaks aren't about mistakes or missteps. In this episode, I talk about: What a Money Power Leak is—and how to spot the ones costing you the most. Why these leaks show up even when you're doing “everything right.” Why simple, everyday decisions will make you more money more than hustle. The 3 traits of high-impact, profit-conscious decision-making. Examples of small, simple shifts to plug profit leaks and make your business more profitable. I think where we often get tripped up is when we believe we have to resolve these tensions—pick one truth and discard the other. This episode is a little love letter from my heart to yours. It's for every one of us high-achieving women who's hit the goal, checked the box, crossed the finish line, and still found ourselves asking... why doesn't it feel like enough? As we near the end of this season, we're diving into one of the biggest undercurrents of Jackie's journey, (and frankly a LOT of our journeys)... the tension between having it all and feeling like you have to be it all in order for that to happen. This one is both personal and universal and the kind of conversation I believe we all need to be having more of... the ones that don't just shift our strategy, but our identity. In this episode, you'll hear: The unspoken job description many women inherit The pattern I see in Jackie that almost every high-achieving woman building her own business has had to unwind The thing that actually drains most women and leads to burnout - that has NOTHING to do with how much you're working The key to building a business that is easy to build and to enjoy What true power/empowerment really looks like (and how it leads to almost every result you could want) Episode Links Join my Facebook group Connect with Jackie on Instagram Learn more about Jackie on her website
Running a business is like being on an upward spiral - you're continually expanding as your business expands, but the spiral isn't always smooth. You bump up against internal limits and ceilings, often of your own creation. When you understand that scaling is an inside job, you develop the toolkit to move beyond them. Truth number four in the CEO Summer School series reveals that your business growth and all those outward markers of success start inside of you. In this episode, you'll discover how to address root issues instead of surface-level symptoms, understand why self-awareness without self-blame is crucial, and learn to recognize when your self-concept needs an upgrade to match your business expansion. When businesses hit a growth ceiling, the instinct is often to throw more marketing dollars at the problem or chase the latest trend. The real question isn't whether you need to change. It's whether you'll make decisions based on data or desperation. Co-founder of Learn Grant Writing, best-selling author, and Alaskan adventuress Meredith Noble faced this exact crossroads in December 2020 when her grant writing education business lost $20,000 in a single month. Rather than guess at solutions, Meredith and her co-founder Alex implemented a systematic customer insight process that transformed everything. Listen in to learn the exact customer insight process Meredith used to re-engineer her business model, how she went from losing $20,000 to generating $45,000 in monthly recurring revenue within seven months, and why customer journey mapping is the "hill she'll die on" as a business strategy.
