Podcast about Slashers films and the history behind them
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year my Slash Citizens!!! In this week's episode we jump back to 1974 to discuss one of the major influencers in the slasher subgenre, Black Christmas. Its lack of blood and gore shows a true classic can run on psychological terror and a story-driven plot. We discuss my distain for backstories, why I'm thankful for *6-9, and whether or not John Carpenter's Halloween is the true godfather of slashers. You may want to lock your windows before turning this one on...
*Audio Less Than Ideal* We get into the holiday spirit this week with Silent Night Deadly Night Part II....and I guess Part I as well. I've never seen a 80 minute movie only take 40 minutes, but that's where SNDNII sets itself apart. Prepare yourself for abysmal acting, a thin plot, a helluva lot of flashbacks, oh and....GARBAGE DAY!!! Pour some liquor in that eggnog when you sit down for this one. You're gonna need it.
BREAKING! Halloween Kills released this Friday and we simply could not pass up the opportunity to watch and give a breakdown. TJ rides shotgun (sawed off with a flashlight) as we talk Michael, Big John/Little John, Hide n Seek with perverts, and why evil does NOT die tonight. First responders beware...Michael is back and bloodthirstier than ever!!!
Rise and shine campers, it's time for another episode of Slash City. This week I welcome back TJ and we say farewell to the summer with Sleepaway Camp II. The Angel of Death, Angela Baker returns but this time as a camp counselor. She wreaks havoc on another group of immoral teens with knives, power drills, battery acid, and anything else she can get her hands on. There will be tokin', there will be pokin', and yes, there will be lots and lots of croakin'...
No need to check your calendars, we're doing April Fools in September. I had Luke and TJ back this week, so why not have a little fun with this mystery slasher? This one features a great ensemble cast including Ginny from Friday the 13th Part II, Biff from Back to the Future, and a Jodie Foster look-a-like, it's enough to make you say...whodunnit? Stop on by for some dranks, skanks, and a helluva lot of pranks.
This week we're reviewing all previously discussed films and put a bow on the Golden Age of the slasher. We talk about both my favorite and most disappointing films, the characters who captured my heart, and the kills that made us go...hells yeah. And what's an episode if I don't bring up the man himself, Tom Savini. Crack an energy drink and kick back as we take one final look at the era that set the tone for what a slasher could and should be. It's a show of gore, horror, and so much more!!!
Happy Friday the 13th to all those in Slash City USA. Tonight is a special episode as I welcome back two slash citizens for a viewing of one of the less popular films of the F13 franchise, A New Beginning. We still manage to have a lot of fun talking Jason, the vile MPAA, my fear of chainsaws, and enchiladas. Stop on by, but hit the bathroom first! If we learn anything from this film, its that pooping at inopportune times can be deadly. Enjoy...
This week we dive into the seedy underworld of New York, with our misunderstood companion, Frank Zito. Frank's just out there trying to live his life. A little sex, take in some art, maybe kill a woman, scalp her then nail her hair to a mannequin, we'll see where the night takes us. Tom Savini has his hand in the effects, so you know we're in for atleast a few wild kills. He also makes a guest appearance as Disco Boy. The early 80's was an incredibly busy time for Tom, hopefully he doesn't lose his head ;)
This week we're back on campus for The House On Sorority Row. Not exactly a who-done-it slasher, but I was forming my own theories throughout. Stop on by so we can discuss the killer, Katie as our final girl, a sea pig in the girls' swimming pool, and exactly why you should be nice to old ladies. You never know what kind of secrets they have buried away...
Slash City returns with a vengeance as we walk through the incredibly well-written, Pieces. Just kidding, but we have fun tearing it apart as we wind down with our last few films in the Golden Age. If you like bloody, poorly-dubbed slashers that take puzzles just a little too seriously, do we have a film for you!!! Stop on by...
The Halloween season has officially begun, and what better way to celebrate than discussing the sequel to the greatest slasher of all time. Michael Myers stalks his way to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital and lets Laurie Strode know the nightmare isn't over yet. If you like foul-mouthed EMTs, hot tub action, and syringes to the face, then this just happens to be your lucky day.
This week the guys at For Nerds By Nerds Podcast stop by for a slumber party. We do a live watch and review of The Slumber Party Massacre, and there are just so...so many questions we need answered. If you're a fan of power drills, group showers, and eating pizza off of dead delivery boys, well then you've come to the right place.
This is it, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter! The death of Jason...the end of a franchise...no more Camp Crystal Lake...for almost an entire year. Why do films want to play with our emotions? I have no diea, but stop by for this weeks episode while we discuss corkscrews, invisible computers, and things that blow up in my face...
It's a very magical evening as we host our first Prom Night in Slash City. JLC returns as our final girl for the 3rd time and she has some new moves to show off! Let's crank up the disco, follow a handful of red herrings, and find out who would dare knock off one of my all time favorite side characters, Slick. This is a prom you'll never forget, if you survive...
Hell hath no fury like a G.I. scorned...or something like that. This week we're talking killers in camo, graduation dances, and a barrage of impressive deaths in 1981's The Prowler. This film acts more as a Tom Savini kill reel than an actual movie, but he does not disappoint. We walk through the "plot" of this classic slasher, then turn our attention to the master of special effects himself. We talk Savini's filmography, his most infamous kills, and where his true passions lie. Stop on by Slash City and pay homage to the grande illusionist of horror.
This week we're back at camp once again, but this time it's Camp Arawak. We're talking one of the great hidden gems of the Slasher Golden Age in Sleepaway Camp, and I think we have the balls to give it justice. If you haven't watched it before, I highly suggest getting a viewing before you listen. Some experiences should be seen, not heard. Swing on by after and let's talk a film with some creative kills, potty-mouth kids, and an ending that will shock you to the core.
Coming at you in 3D, it's time to visit Jason down on the farm! This week we discuss Shelly, Jason getting his iconic mask, strange 80's biker gangs, slashers who love to play hide n seek, and so much more. If Covid's got you on lock and you're feeling the cabin fever, sneak on over to Slash City where we can try to figure out why Steve Miner feels the need to have not one, but two poop scenes in this film.
Happy Friday the 13th to all of our Slash Citizens out there!!! This week we switch it up and in honor of our holiday we play a slasher trivia game. My co-host Luke threw some questions at me and I answered them the best I could. Come listen in, play along, and see how well you know your slashers. I'll admit, some questions were layups, but it did lead to some great conversation. Grab your machete, energy drink, and let's go!!!Follow along with the 2nd session of questions here: https://www.theguardian.com/uk/quiz/2007/sep/25/slasher
This week we bookend the Golden Age of the slasher with A Nightmare on Elm Street. TJ and I break down the film, discuss Nancy as an all time great final girl, and what makes Freddy Krueger so damn fun! We run well over 60 minutes this time, so throw on a pot of coffee and never sleep again!!!
This week it's all about potato sacks, wheelchairs, and women that aren't afraid of a late night swim. That's right it is Friday the 13th Part II, so let's leave behind Pamela Vorhees and get to know her outdoorsy son. Luke Reed is back as my guest, but we also bring in our most loyal listener TJ Murdoch. Let's see how long it takes for him to get under my skin (spoiler: not long)...
I'm still running high on sugary birthday cake, so Luke and I do our best to unwrap one hell of a slasher in Happy Birthday to Me!!! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably never want to eat shisk-ka-bobs again, so blow out your candles and wish for the best because this birthday will be one to die for...and beware the red herring...
2020 is officially underway, and I ring in the new year with Jamie Lee Curtis, David Copperfield, and a New Years party from Hell in 1980's Terror Train! Luke Reed joins me once again as he brings a fresh perspective and we try our best to keep things...on track. Yes it's one of the episodes, so climb aboard and enjoy the show.
Tis the season to be slaying! It's Christmas week here in Slash City and we prepare for the jolly man who rewards the nice, and punishes the naughty. I'm joined by special guest, Luke Reed, as we take on the festive slasher, Silent Night Deadly Night.
This week we head north of the border and visit one of my favorite slashers, My Bloody Valentine. If you're a fan of practical effects and prosthetics, be sure to grab the Director's Cut.
Head on back to camp as this week we're discussing 1981's The Burning. This film is highlighted by an amazing supporting cast lead by Mr. George Constanza himself, Jason Alexander. Tom Savini makes his horror movie return, so you know we'll have some gory kills to discuss, along with the infamous canoe massacre. Trust me baby, you're gonna want to gather round the campfire for this one…
This week we're talking Sean Cunningham, Tom Savini, Kevin Bacon, Crazy Ralph, and more!!! That's right, it's Friday the 13th. Stop on by to listen in on one mother of a slasher (see what I did there).
Stop on by Slash City, where today we discuss the mother of all Slashers, John Carpenter's Halloween! We breakdown the film and talk characters, favorite scenes, Carpenter's best shots, and what makes this the blueprint all other slashers would copy for years to come.
Welcome to the first episode of Slash City. This podcast will review and discuss the greatest subgenre in all of film, SLASHERS!!! Join your host, Sam Karras, as he revisits the classics and introduces you to some hidden gems along the way. It's going to be a bloody good time.
