“The thing that started it all off was me saying [the character Toxie] should be a guy in a suit. In other words, let's not do a computer-generated creature, let's have a person in a suit and have that handmade, hand-stitched kind of quality to it where you can sort of see the seams a little bit and have that be part of the fun. I also said let's have it be rated R. Hopefully y'all are not interested in a family-friendly PG-13 version of this movie, because that's not what the fans of the original are going to want, so let's keep it in the R-zone. And let's make sure it stays very silly. That silliness is what was so appealing to me about the original, and I just wanted to make sure that we weren't going to try and do something that was too self-serious,” says The Toxic Avenger writer/director Macon Blair about pitching Legendary Studios his version of how he would reimagine the classic black comedy splatter film for a modern audience while staying loyal to the fans of the 1984 version.  On today's episode, we chat with writer/director/actor Macon Blair about his previous films like Blue Ruin and I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, which won the Sundance Grand Jury award in 2017. His latest film is a reboot of The Toxic Avenger starring Peter Dinklage and Kevin Bacon, and is a whole lot of gory, gross-out fun. Blair talks about the need to dig into the over-the-top absurdity of the franchise while still making the modern version of the story feel authentic.  “I'm always looking for something that I can connect to on a personal level. I don't mean autobiographical. I mean to be able to have that electrical current with what I'm typing out,” he says. Blair tells us about his on-going journey to finding his voice as a writer and what it was like waiting two years to get distribution for The Toxic Avenger. He also explains why he skewers a famous screenwriting trope in the film that involves a cat named Mr. Treats who was apparently quite the menace. To hear more insight, listen to the podcast.

It might not feel like an obvious follow-up to his work with Saulnier, nor to Blair's previous film, I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE; neither might seem like a direct descendent of Macon's "feeling seen" choice, DAZED AND CONFUSED. When Nadine Whitney interviewed actor Frank Mosley, she started their chat with a game akin to Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Want to know how to get to Meryl Streep from Frank? Easier than even Frank probably thinks. Frank starred in Geoff Marslett's Quantum Cowboys which also featured Alex Cox. Alex Cox directed Ed Harris in Walker. Ed also features in Stephen Daldry's adaptation of The Hours.Frank is usually a supporting or character actor, but when given the chance to lead a film such as Cameron Bruce Nelson's award-winning 2015 film Some Beasts there is a particular grace to his performance which proves he can (and should) carry a film.Originally from Texas and now living in Los Angeles, Frank has been in three films with Lily Gladstone, Chained for Life directed by Aaron Schimberg, and is an accomplished director in his own right.Frank has the incredible ability to create and sustain community within his artistic practice. He's open to the absurd, the heartfelt, the just plain weird, and the full dramatic spectrum.Nadine spoke to Frank about working with Albert Birney and Peter Ohs (he also featured in Ohs' excellent Love and Work) about their 8-Bit fantasy OBEX in which he plays a television named Victor. “Our goal in writing [Sirens] was to write something that makes you think, and offers the opportunity to re-examine your own assumptions that you made about these characters. And it's taxing. We ask some difficult questions. It's not The Perfect Couple. It's not a murder show. We're going after something thematically that's really large and really ambitious, and that's why the Greek mythology came to mind. These are epic stories. These are about blood, and moms, and torture, and trauma, and pain. These themes are not tiny. These are complicated, juicy stews,” says showrunner and creator, Molly Smith Metzler about why she wanted to invoke big themes from Greek drama in her TV show Sirens.  On today's episode, we chat with Molly Smith Metzler, showrunner and creator of the hit Netflix limited series Sirens starring Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy and Kevin Bacon. The show is based on her stage play Elemeno Pea from 2011. Smith Metzler talks about making the transition from playwriting to television and what she learned about being in the writer's room for Orange is the New Black.  "Everything you do in a [writer's] room is an offering. I'm here to serve, I'm here to serve you. Come in with ideas, offer them. If they don't hit, back off of them. You are a sous chef and a waiter," she says.  She also talks about writing edgy female characters unapologetically, like the ones in Sirens, and the numerous times she was asked to remove a certain risqué scene from the pilot script – which she refused to do. "We have to write these women in their truest form – they're complicated, and they don't have to explain themselves, either. My job is not to soften her so an audience won't turn off the TV show," she says.  To hear more about creating Sirens listen to the podcast.

And in a twist worthy of six-degrees of Kevin Bacon, Ashley calls Brian so he can recount a time in his community theatre past when he very well may have been sharing the stage with (long retired from Hollywood) Tom Ewell! As an added bonus, tune in after the Cheers to hear a blooper from the full "Famous Photographs" episode that aired January 30th. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 110 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Josh Parham discuss the latest film in their Paul Verhoeven series, Hollow Man (2000). In his final project within the Hollywood system, Paul Verhoeven entered the new millennium looking to make a new take on a classic horror film, about a scientist working on a special government project that turns you invisible by taking a special serum. In aiming to make a more conventional blockbuster, the director made one of his most controversial, thorny pictures as the main protagonist of the film is a downright psycho, hell bent on staying invisible despite being told how dangerous he has become by his long time co-workers on the project. It's a mostly entertaining throwback to the 2000s with excellent special effects as well as a deeply disturbing commentary attached to it. Ryan, Jay, and Josh break down their thoughts on the film, the creepy nature of tech-bros, the unfocused nature of who really is the lead of this film, the filmography of Kevin Bacon, how cool this movie poster was at a Blockbuster video, and just how many jokes can Josh make about Jay relating to the main characters of this film. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h23m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Paul Verhoeven with a review of his film, Black Book. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Next, they talk about Chipotle's earnings, which were grimmer: That brand saw a same-store sales decline for the second quarter in a row. But Alicia, our team's Chipotle expert, is more bothered by the traffic numbers. Can the chain turn things around? Then, they delve into the details of McDonald's beverage plan: The chain will roll out a test at more than 500 locations in September. In the wake of its short-lived CosMc's brand, McDonald's hopes to take its learnings and find more success in existing stores.
