For our latest Live Listen Closely album listening party chat podcast, we are chiming in with My Bloody Valentine fever as the band prepare to play Dublin for the first time in 33 years this week. Their seminal and definite album Loveless is considered a classic of shoegaze, a totem of the genre. If shoegaze is about building sonic cathedrals, Loveless is the La Sagrada Família of shoegaze. Nialler and Aoife Barry discuss the album's fraught recording process that involved 19 studios, up to 45 engineers, two and a half years and approximately £250,000 of Creation Records for 48 minutes of music. But what music! Kevin Shields glide guitar and open tunings added an otherness to the record, as did the mono mix and the Enforced Method Acting of getting Belinda Butcher to sing after immediately waking up.  Loveless is a nebulous thing - it's more of an ambient wall-of-sound than a guitar rock record at times, that nearly bankrupted the label and turned one label exec's hair white. We discuss it all. This is an addendum podcast to our original 2022 episode about the album. Our next listening party event  is Outkast's Stankonia on Wednesday November 26th. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android  | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Bon Appetit.

Friend of the show Casey O'Connor returns to help us celebrate Halloween with a discussion of 1980s stand-alone SLASHER MOVIES that never became sequels or franchises (sorry, Freddy, Jason, Michael, and Chucky). We start by getting aboard the TERROR TRAIN, followed by the weird as hell HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. Next comes the slaughter fest that is PIECES (It's exactly what you think it is!). Then we retreat to the woods with THE BURNING and MADMAN. We discuss the underappreciated debauchery of THE PROWLER, and the surprising longevity of MY BLOODY VALENTINE. Next, we flash some devil horns at TRICK OR TREAT, a heavy metal masterpiece. We end the night with the brutal but unique INTRUDER. In between, we mention several more of our favorite Slashers, as well as some of the one-off hits that came along in the decades after this horror heyday of the 1980s. Please join us for our Slasher Party! We've got all the popcorn and chainsaws you'll need! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Vendredi 13, Terreur sur la ligne, The Burning, My Bloody Valentine, Prom Night, Maniac, Sleepaway Camp…

In this episode we invite the highly entertaining Lisa Verrico to join us from her native Glasgow and talk us through her career from IPC's Vox magazine to The Times. Commencing with her memory of first hearing Prince's 'Little Red Corvette' as a kid on holiday in Spain, our guest recalls her days of raving (and working in radio) before describing how she got her foot in the door at Vox. Hair-raising Mancunian encounters with Happy Mondays and Mark E. Smith serve as preludes to Lisa's hilarious 1994 interview with Oasis. We hear her "bootleg recording" of the Gallagher brothers' competing impersonations of Mick Jagger on the band's impromptu rendition of 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. A broad discussion of what the '90s meant for pop culture takes in Lisa's memories of Oasis hanger-on Evan Dando and of the altogether different My Bloody Valentine. Clips from a 1989 audio interview with the latter's Kevin Shields and bandmates prompt reflections on MBV's extraordinary sound and their somewhat dysfunctional relationship with Creation's Alan McGee. We return to Lisa's own story by asking her what happened after Vox folded in 1998 — and how she wound up  reviewing (and interviewing) for The Times for 25 years. We also discuss how much the live music experience has changed in that time. Finally, we hear about our guest's 2019 trip to L.A. to interview 17-year-old superstar-in-the-making Billie Eilish. After paying heartfelt tribute to cult neo-soul star D'Angelo — note that news of the death of former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley only reached us after this episode was recorded — Mark quotes from a 1984 interview with jazz giant Wynton Marsalis and Jasper takes us out with his thoughts on Joe Muggs' 2011 interview with the great James Blake. Many thanks to special guest Lisa Verrico. You can find her writing in The Times.  Pieces discussed: Oasis: Shake'n'vac, Evan Dando: Baby I'm Bored, Evan Dando: "I get the feeling I'm being bullshitted", Evan Dando: The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, Evan Dando: Different Drum, My Bloody Valentine audio, Billie Eilish, D'Angelo: Soul Asylum, On D'Angelo and the Birth of Neo-Soul, D'Angelo: Black Messiah, Wynton Marsalis: The Hottest Lips in America and James Blake: Point Blake.

Andrew Perer in conversation with David Eastaugh  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Turn-Head-Into-Sound-Valentine/dp/1916829147 Turn My Head Into Sound: A history of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine tells the story of one of the great sonic innovators of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. My Bloody Valentine have released only three albums in their forty-year career, but each of them has made a seismic impact. Isn't Anything (1988) is often cited as one of the Ur-texts of shoegaze and dream rock; Loveless (1991) is an undisputed masterpiece heralded by many as the best album of the 1990s; m b v (2013) is one of the best-loved comeback albums in recent memory. For those who know Kevin Shields and his work already, he is an indie-rock icon, but by other measures he's still a relatively obscure figure in the musical mainstream, and to date there has been no full-length appraisal of his work or his band's career. Until now. Shields is truly a one-of-a-kind musician, and this book—which fills in the gaps, corrects errors, and takes an objective look at the band's entire career, warts and all—paints the full picture of one of the most revolutionary sonic artists of our time. Turn My Head Into Sound is based on numerous interviews with people who were there (some of them speaking on the record for the first time) as well as an exhaustive archive of band-related material that the author has been assembling since 1990. Longtime fans of the band will find plenty of new information here, including the full story of the tumultuous period at Island Records following the release of Loveless. The lost years that followed would see Shields employed as engineer, producer, and remixer while also becoming an auxiliary member of Primal Scream. This book's analysis of this diverse but lesser-known work offers reader a much fuller picture of the relentless creativity and perfectionism at the center of his process.

As most of us are preparing for the most wonderful time of the year (the Jack-o'-lantern one…not the Bells and Holly one), Spill Your Guts is taking this episode to the day of romance and cupid and dead flowers wrapped up nicely. And there is no horror film more associated with Valentine's Day than “My Bloody Valentine”. This 1981 classic has become seminal title in the pantheon of horror and did for Valentine's Day what John Carpenter's enduring masterpiece “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” did for the respective dates. My Bloody Valentine has endured the test of time and become regular viewing every Valentine's Day for horror fans. It's also Quentin Tarantino's favorite slasher film. High praise…and well deserved. However, the film faced more than its share of challenges in both production and release and was considered a flop (if it was considered at all). There's a long and compelling story to how “My Bloody Valentine” became the classic it is today with action figures, comics, a novel adaptation and even a board game. Joining me to delve into the film as well as his career as a real journeyman filmmaker is My Bloody Valentine's masterful director, George Mihalka. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Featured Musician: Jim Cherewick THE VIDEO: [After THE JUMP: Things discussable.]  --------------------- 1. CMU Preview: Offense starts at noon They rotate a LOT. Get ready for two offensive lines, three quarterbacks, and a lot of Iowa from the former Army OL coach whose YouTube clinics have been a staple of my learning diet. Fullbacks! 2. CMU Preview: Defense starts around 15:02 MAC version of Hutch, or a poor man's Braden McGregor is Holdman, the SDE who has to play B-gaps because they don't have the size. They're in a 404 Tite and they're aggressive, so expect something like the Army 2019 game. 3. Oklahoma After Review: Offense starts around 26:10 What it looked like on first watch. Frustrating that we don't have answers for Dantonio stuff. Felt like Hoke era offense. OL was okay save for Zack Marshall; he wasn't ready and we missed Marlin Klein. RBs were not pressing gaps, Haynes missed blocks in pass pro. 4. Oklahoma After Review: Defense starts at 44:43 Couldn't fit the QB run game. A lot of that was unbalanced, and Michigan didn't use the same response to that as usual, probably because Jayden Sanders was at corner and they didn't want him to be the free safety. Some Dammit Wink but I expect Guy to chip. Weirdly bad games from Benny, Guy, Moore. A little worried that Tre Williams still thinks he's a Clemson d-tackle.  Featured Artist: Jim Cherewick A local artist, writer, and musician, Jim Cherewick has been involved in a lot of projects around town—Gymsee, False Figures, Best Exes, Piner, Wicker Chairs, and Congress. I discovered him because I liked his watercolors, and then saw he's playing at the Pig with Cattywampus in October so I started checking out his stuff and have been writing to it all week. It's all indie but all sounds different—the best way I can describe it is you start with a guy and a Fender and add a My Bloody Valentine slider that goes all the way up (Congress) or down (Wicker Chairs). I chose a spread to show what I mean. I'm still in discovery mode here but hope you'll join me. Songs: "Death Wagon"—Jim Cherewick "Urgency"—Wicker Chairs "Pile of Me"—Congress Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken down, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

Gank That Drank: A Supernatural Drinking Game Podcast

Love bites and so does Famine! Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nate McWhortor from Mesa's Neighborhood Comedy Theater as they dive into one of Supernatural's most disturbing Valentine's Day episodes. This chunky episode serves up body horror with a side of burgers as the Winchester brothers face off against the Horseman Famine in a tale that makes cannibalism look like romance gone wrong. The Feast of FamineOur hosts break down how Famine's hunger-inducing powers affect everyone differently—from couples literally consuming each other to Castiel's newfound obsession with hamburgers. The episode brilliantly shows Dean's emotional emptiness through his immunity to Famine's effects, while Sam's demon blood addiction becomes the key to victory. It's a masterclass in character development disguised as monster-of-the-week horror.Drinking Game CarnageThis episode proved to be a heavy drinking game with rules including drinks for "Smooch City" moments, Dean's drinking, deaths (double if named), demon smoke, Cupid hugs, Sam questioning Dean, the word "hungry," and every time Castiel eats. The hosts hilariously disagreed on counts, with Krissy tallying 18 instances of "hungry/hunger" compared to Nate's 8, proving this episode was as packed with content as Famine's victims were with food.Other Topics Covered:Russell and Alice's disturbing opening sceneOffice romance gone murderous with Jimbo, Brad, and JaniceDr. Corman's memorable performance and tragic endCupid's emotional breakdown and revelation about the Winchester parentsThe grotesque Biggerson's restaurant massacreSam's demon blood relapse and heroic demon exorcismDean's existential crisis about his inner emptinessCastiel's burger addiction and raw hamburger consumptionNext Episode Preview: Season 7 Episode 19 "Of Grave Importance" featuring Bobby as a ghost with drinking rules for ghost appearances, Swayze references, and Bobby's signature phrases.Find Gank That Drank wherever podcasts are downloaded, and catch Krissy and Nate live at the Neighborhood Comedy Theater in downtown Mesa, Arizona! ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got an absolute legend of the punk and indie-rock worlds in conversation with a relatively newer voice who's making some great music, too: Bob Mould and Will Anderson. Bob Mould got his start in the late 1970s with the Minneapolis-born punk / post-punk band Husker Du, a trio that was at the tip of the spear of incredible new sounds. After that band ran out of jet fuel in the late 1980s, Mould embarked on a solo career and also created the band Sugar, itself a touchstone outfit. Mould has released a total of 15 solo albums over the years, and there's not a dud in the bunch. His latest is a tuneful, melodic set of ragers called Here We Go Crazy, which he once again made with his ace rhythm section, Jon Wurster and Jason Narducy. He's toured a bunch in support of the record with those guys, but his next set of dates—in August and September, check bobmould.com for details—will find him playing solo-electric, which is also a powerful way to experience these songs. Check out the title track of Here We Go Crazy right here. The other half of today's conversation is Will Anderson, who's been making music for the past few years under the name Hotline TNT—sometimes by himself, sometimes with a rotating band of players. His first album under the name, Nineteen in Love, was recorded by himself during COVID, all in GarageBand. His third—and second for Jack White's Third Man Records—feels much more like a full-band affair: It's more fleshed out and expansive. Hotline TNT has frequently been called a shoegaze band, but it's a tag that Anderson is quick to refute, at least a little bit: In this conversation, he says that his shoegaze knowledge pretty much begins and ends with My Bloody Valentine. Whatever you call it, its swirls and layers feel pretty damn good right now. Check out a little bit of “Julia's War” from the latest Hotline TNT album, Raspberry Moon. In this great chat, Bob and Will talk about Bob's recent commencement speech at his alma mater and they also chat about the proper construction of an album, playing overseas for the first time, Bob's Super Bowl appearance and much more. Enjoy! Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Will Anderson and Bob Mould for chatting. AthCastMusic: The Music of Athens GA, Now and Then

Trepid is a band that was only born ten months ago. Members May May Bryant (vocalist), Turner Chastain (rhythm guitar), J. Ben Turk (lead guitar), John Bellerjeau (bass), and Ethan Houseman (drums) talk about how a magical meeting brought them together — and why they knew Athens was the right place to shape their own sound and technique within the 80s and 90s shoegaze genre. With bands like My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and The Mary Chain, Slowdive, and Catherine Wheel laying the foundation, Trepid took what they could from those influences and left the rest behind, replacing it with their own multi-layered, melodic, and boisterous vocals that push through the instrumental side of their message.I was surprised — and honestly impressed — when I talked with these young musicians. Take a hard listen to May May, Turner, and J. Ben. They'll let you in, if you do.Thank you for listening to AthCastMusic. “There was always a way that music could speak to me,” says Youth Lagoon's Trevor Powers. “I was really shy as a kid and I had a lot on my mind that I didn't know how to get out. And music felt like one of those cheat codes where I felt like what I could say through one song was a lifetime worth of what was in my brain that I couldn't say any other way.” I was instantly captivated by Youth Lagoon's music when I first heard it more than a decade ago: Trevor Powers' plaintive, childlike voice, the dreaminess and heady sonic textures of his music, the candor in his storytelling. In the years since the Boise, Idaho artist's 2011 debut album, he has continually deepened his ability to make music that soothes and haunts at the same time. His latest album, Rarely Do I Dream, is his best yet, and one of my favorite LPs of 2025 so far. In the conversation in episode 121, Trevor talks about how discovering a trove of old home movies helped inspire the new album, and remind him of the importance of finding the true feeling at the center of a memory. He also discusses growing up hearing artists like Elvis and The Beach Boys and John Denver while being homeschooled, before finally being exposed to bands like Korn and the Offspring and Blink-182 when he eventually attended high school, and later discovering artists like My Bloody Valentine and Oingo Boingo thanks to his uncle introducing him to more cutting edge music. “There's always something that's coming in that's changing not only my thought process, but there's something internally that's awakening my spirit in these new ways and pushing me in all these different directions,” he says. “There could be an endless amount of lifetimes and I can't get it all out, what's up here.”Trevor also shares why he decided to "kill off" the Youth Lagoon Project several years ago, and to instead record under his own name for awhile, and why he chose to resurrect the moniker back in 2022. Youth Lagoon is on tour in the U.S. until mid-May. Get more info here.

On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, I'm pleased to have Deb Googe on the podcast. She's probably most well known for being the bassist in My Bloody Valentine but is back now with a new project with Cara Tivey called da Googie. Today, Deb tells us about a pivotal moment in her life, reminding us that not all pivotal moments are things we recognize in the moment but sometimes the smallest thing can lead you down a path you didn't know even existed.  Music credits: Blue Dot Sessions "Dumb" da Googie Deb's Site Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! Holiday films are themselves a subgenre of slasher films. For St. Valentine's Day, we've had a few examples including VALENTINE (2001) and MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1989 and 2009). Now in 2025, we have a brand new one entitled HEART EYES.From IMDB: For the past several years, the “Heart Eyes Killer” has wreaked havoc on Valentine's Day by stalking and murdering romantic couples. This Valentine's Day, no couple is safe. The film is directed by Josh Ruben and written by Philip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy. The cast includes Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding. Released on February 7th, 2025, the movie has received phenomenal reviews. Your co-hosts take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.
