On this episode of the podcast Phillip is joined once again by movie reviewer Jaylan Salah. Check out her YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@jaylansalahsalman. Phillip and Jaylan discuss the badass Pam Grier and her 1973 film Coffy. After a little Tarantino Talks, Phillip starts the show by giving the general information about the movie as well as some trivia. It's then time for Listener' Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Then they discuss the movie. It's a great discussion. Phillip and Jaylan then answer the question of what they think Tarantino might have seen from this move that he liked or used in one of his films. They then individually rate the movie. Then they answer the question of whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. It's then time for Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984). Jaylan then gives her recommendations; Seeds (2025) and The Tale of Silyan (2025). Then Phillip promotes next week's show, when he will be joined by Shon Wheeler from Scareflair Records to talk all about My Bloody Valentine (1981). Thanks for listening.

Nick welcomes Forbes music journalist Jim Ryan back for another round of concert stories and backstage encounters. They talk about recent shows including the Lemonheads at Thalia Hall and Sons of the Silent Age at Metro, then swap stories about run-ins with Flavor Flav of Public Enemy, Chip Z’Nuff of Enuff Z’Nuff, and Al Jourgensen from Ministry. They also look ahead to upcoming tours and vent about just how expensive concert tickets have become. Esmeralda Leon joins in to talk about the weirdness of Valentine's Day, how they spent the weekend, and why the holiday lends itself so easily to horror movies. That leads into a deep dive on ridiculous 80s slasher films, including My Bloody Valentine, and a continuation of their conversation about celebrity pranksters, with Tom Cruise and Ben Affleck added to the mix. It's music talk, holiday skepticism, and horror nostalgia, all rolled into one. [Ep 430]

Love isn't soft this week — it's sharp. In Valentine's Week Horror History (Feb 9–15), we trace the anniversaries where romance curdles into obsession, suburbia turns sinister, and the holiday's heart-shaped sheen hides something mean underneath.Inside this episode (Quick Hits + Spotlight):Feb 11, 1981 — My Bloody Valentine: blue-collar slasher dread in a mining town where the tunnels feel alive and the “tradition” is murder. (U.S. this week: free via Kanopy / buy-rent on major VOD.) Feb 13, 2009 — Friday the 13th (reboot): Jason's modern-era brutality — fast, nasty, and built like a greatest-hits mixtape of the franchise's worst impulses. (U.S. this week: Netflix and Tubi, plus VOD.) Feb 14, 1991 — The Silence of the Lambs: prestige terror and psychological horror that changed the culture — and proved “thriller” can still be nightmare fuel. (U.S. this week: AMC+.) Feb 13, 2019 — Happy Death Day 2U: time-loop mayhem with real heart and a wicked sense of humor. (U.S. this week: HBO Max.) Deep-Cut Spotlight:Feb 12, 1975 — The Stepford Wives: no monster suit required — just a perfect town, perfect smiles, and a nightmare hiding behind domestic bliss. (U.S. this week: Tubi.) Birthday Roll (4): Emma Roberts (1991), Natalie Dormer (1982), Simon Pegg (1970), Claire Bloom (1931).Weekly Recommendation (Valentine's “bouquet” stack): Misery (1990) (MGM+), Audition (1999), The Fly (1986) (Tubi), plus modern Valentine carnage with Heart Eyes (2025) (Netflix) and Companion (2025) (HBO Max). If you like your romance with slashers, psychological dread, body horror, and suburban nightmares, this week's timeline is a whole box of chocolates… and at least one of them bites back.

The second Valentine's Day Movies Actually episode takes a strong left turn from the warm and fuzzy feels of the Garry Marshall ensemble rom-com they covered a couple years ago. This time, Kerry and Collin are joined by their resident slasher movie expert, Patrick Ripoll, to discuss the 1981 cult classic, "My Bloody Valentine" (later remade in 2009). What makes this particular masked killer so distinct from the likes of Jason, Freddy, Michael, Ricky, Chucky, et al? Why was there never a sequel to this film when there was clearly a lot that could be done with it? How does the remake hold up against the original? They get into all of these issues after Patrick and Collin talk about the coincidental movie project they both happen to be working on separately. Also, the latest and greatest in physical media with the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. Listen to Patrick Ripoll on 96 Greers and follow his Hitchcock project throughout the year on Director's Club. We talk about his early life with music, the rise of the band, and what it feels like when success looks great from the outside but feels very different on the inside. Simon describes the difference between process and outcome, how pressure can drain the creative spark, and what it was like to walk away when the band split. We explore how he found his way into therapy, how years of touring and chronic stress shape the brain and nervous system, and the psychological challenges that musicians often face. And we talk about The Boo Radleys reuniting more than two decades later with a different mindset. No expectations. No pressure. In which The Curmudgeons pay homage to one of the most storied--and notorious-indie-rock bands of their era. Starting in 1995, the Brian Jones Massacre unleashed a brand of retro-futuristic trance-rock that expanded the possibilities of the rock idiom. The band, led by enigmatic and perhaps troubled frontman Anton Newcombe, initially dabbled in the shoegazer genre defined by bands like My Bloody Valentine. But The Brian Jonestown Massacre soon embraced 1960s British psychedelia to drive Newcombe's extraordinary gift for finding a song's most meditative center. By the end of the 2000s, the band was exploring European dance music while maintaining that special, incredibly absorbing BJM "thing." We revisit and analyze the band's first 15 years of recorded output in this episode. For our latest Live Listen Closely album listening party chat podcast, we are chiming in with My Bloody Valentine fever as the band prepare to play Dublin for the first time in 33 years this week. Their seminal and definite album Loveless is considered a classic of shoegaze, a totem of the genre. If shoegaze is about building sonic cathedrals, Loveless is the La Sagrada Família of shoegaze. Nialler and Aoife Barry discuss the album's fraught recording process that involved 19 studios, up to 45 engineers, two and a half years and approximately £250,000 of Creation Records for 48 minutes of music. But what music! Kevin Shields glide guitar and open tunings added an otherness to the record, as did the mono mix and the Enforced Method Acting of getting Belinda Butcher to sing after immediately waking up. Loveless is a nebulous thing - it's more of an ambient wall-of-sound than a guitar rock record at times, that nearly bankrupted the label and turned one label exec's hair white. We discuss it all. This is an addendum podcast to our original 2022 episode about the album. Our next listening party event is Outkast's Stankonia on Wednesday November 26th. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link

Devin & James are back in the Den, and they're handing out full-sized candy bars to all the trick or treaters! Friend of the show Casey O'Connor returns to help us celebrate Halloween with a discussion of 1980s stand-alone SLASHER MOVIES that never became sequels or franchises (sorry, Freddy, Jason, Michael, and Chucky). We start by getting aboard the TERROR TRAIN, followed by the weird as hell HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME. Next comes the slaughter fest that is PIECES (It's exactly what you think it is!). Then we retreat to the woods with THE BURNING and MADMAN. We discuss the underappreciated debauchery of THE PROWLER, and the surprising longevity of MY BLOODY VALENTINE. Next, we flash some devil horns at TRICK OR TREAT, a heavy metal masterpiece. We end the night with the brutal but unique INTRUDER. In between, we mention several more of our favorite Slashers, as well as some of the one-off hits that came along in the decades after this horror heyday of the 1980s. Please join us for our Slasher Party! We've got all the popcorn and chainsaws you'll need! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Following a bit of a history lesson on the genre's role in the country, each member of the group presents their picks for the Canadian horror films that they want to spotlight. It should be noted that David Cronenberg mentions are a bit light, as there's a whole separate show that can be done about Canada's most notable filmmaker; however, hear plenty about werewolves, weird monsters, slashers, screamers, summers, and more. In this episode we invite the highly entertaining Lisa Verrico to join us from her native Glasgow and talk us through her career from IPC's Vox magazine to The Times. Commencing with her memory of first hearing Prince's 'Little Red Corvette' as a kid on holiday in Spain, our guest recalls her days of raving (and working in radio) before describing how she got her foot in the door at Vox. Hair-raising Mancunian encounters with Happy Mondays and Mark E. Smith serve as preludes to Lisa's hilarious 1994 interview with Oasis. We hear her "bootleg recording" of the Gallagher brothers' competing impersonations of Mick Jagger on the band's impromptu rendition of 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. A broad discussion of what the '90s meant for pop culture takes in Lisa's memories of Oasis hanger-on Evan Dando and of the altogether different My Bloody Valentine. Clips from a 1989 audio interview with the latter's Kevin Shields and bandmates prompt reflections on MBV's extraordinary sound and their somewhat dysfunctional relationship with Creation's Alan McGee. We return to Lisa's own story by asking her what happened after Vox folded in 1998 — and how she wound up reviewing (and interviewing) for The Times for 25 years. We also discuss how much the live music experience has changed in that time. Finally, we hear about our guest's 2019 trip to L.A. to interview 17-year-old superstar-in-the-making Billie Eilish. After paying heartfelt tribute to cult neo-soul star D'Angelo — note that news of the death of former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley only reached us after this episode was recorded — Mark quotes from a 1984 interview with jazz giant Wynton Marsalis and Jasper takes us out with his thoughts on Joe Muggs' 2011 interview with the great James Blake. Many thanks to special guest Lisa Verrico. You can find her writing in The Times. Pieces discussed: Oasis: Shake'n'vac, Evan Dando: Baby I'm Bored, Evan Dando: "I get the feeling I'm being bullshitted", Evan Dando: The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, Evan Dando: Different Drum, My Bloody Valentine audio, Billie Eilish, D'Angelo: Soul Asylum, On D'Angelo and the Birth of Neo-Soul, D'Angelo: Black Messiah, Wynton Marsalis: The Hottest Lips in America and James Blake: Point Blake.
The Geekz slash into our 31 Days of Horror marathon with Heart Eyes (2025) — a Valentine's Day killer flick where romance turns deadly. As couples and singles gear up for February 14th, a masked murderer begins staging grisly, heart-themed kills, leaving a trail of clues that point to a ruthless motive buried beneath the roses and chocolates. In our review, we break down the whodunit mystery, tension-filled set pieces, and standout performances from Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt. Does Heart Eyes deliver a new holiday slasher classic in the vein of My Bloody Valentine, or does it miss the mark? We unpack the pacing, kills, twists, and where it lands in the modern slasher wave.
Andrew Perer in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Turn-Head-Into-Sound-Valentine/dp/1916829147 Turn My Head Into Sound: A history of Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine tells the story of one of the great sonic innovators of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. My Bloody Valentine have released only three albums in their forty-year career, but each of them has made a seismic impact. Isn't Anything (1988) is often cited as one of the Ur-texts of shoegaze and dream rock; Loveless (1991) is an undisputed masterpiece heralded by many as the best album of the 1990s; m b v (2013) is one of the best-loved comeback albums in recent memory. For those who know Kevin Shields and his work already, he is an indie-rock icon, but by other measures he's still a relatively obscure figure in the musical mainstream, and to date there has been no full-length appraisal of his work or his band's career. Until now. Shields is truly a one-of-a-kind musician, and this book—which fills in the gaps, corrects errors, and takes an objective look at the band's entire career, warts and all—paints the full picture of one of the most revolutionary sonic artists of our time. Turn My Head Into Sound is based on numerous interviews with people who were there (some of them speaking on the record for the first time) as well as an exhaustive archive of band-related material that the author has been assembling since 1990. Longtime fans of the band will find plenty of new information here, including the full story of the tumultuous period at Island Records following the release of Loveless. The lost years that followed would see Shields employed as engineer, producer, and remixer while also becoming an auxiliary member of Primal Scream. This book's analysis of this diverse but lesser-known work offers reader a much fuller picture of the relentless creativity and perfectionism at the center of his process.

Featured Musician: Jim Cherewick THE VIDEO: [After THE JUMP: Things discussable.] --------------------- 1. CMU Preview: Offense starts at noon They rotate a LOT. Get ready for two offensive lines, three quarterbacks, and a lot of Iowa from the former Army OL coach whose YouTube clinics have been a staple of my learning diet. Fullbacks! 2. CMU Preview: Defense starts around 15:02 MAC version of Hutch, or a poor man's Braden McGregor is Holdman, the SDE who has to play B-gaps because they don't have the size. They're in a 404 Tite and they're aggressive, so expect something like the Army 2019 game. 3. Oklahoma After Review: Offense starts around 26:10 What it looked like on first watch. Frustrating that we don't have answers for Dantonio stuff. Felt like Hoke era offense. OL was okay save for Zack Marshall; he wasn't ready and we missed Marlin Klein. RBs were not pressing gaps, Haynes missed blocks in pass pro. 4. Oklahoma After Review: Defense starts at 44:43 Couldn't fit the QB run game. A lot of that was unbalanced, and Michigan didn't use the same response to that as usual, probably because Jayden Sanders was at corner and they didn't want him to be the free safety. Some Dammit Wink but I expect Guy to chip. Weirdly bad games from Benny, Guy, Moore. A little worried that Tre Williams still thinks he's a Clemson d-tackle. Featured Artist: Jim Cherewick A local artist, writer, and musician, Jim Cherewick has been involved in a lot of projects around town—Gymsee, False Figures, Best Exes, Piner, Wicker Chairs, and Congress. I discovered him because I liked his watercolors, and then saw he's playing at the Pig with Cattywampus in October so I started checking out his stuff and have been writing to it all week. It's all indie but all sounds different—the best way I can describe it is you start with a guy and a Fender and add a My Bloody Valentine slider that goes all the way up (Congress) or down (Wicker Chairs). I chose a spread to show what I mean. I'm still in discovery mode here but hope you'll join me. Songs: "Death Wagon"—Jim Cherewick "Urgency"—Wicker Chairs "Pile of Me"—Congress Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken down, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat
