This week, Patreon supporter Matt Bates, the Black Country Vlogger, brings us Innocent Blood (1992) for our Pain and Pleasure theme -- a film that revels in the push and pull between the two. Innocent Blood (1992) came about in a roundabout way, which is fitting for a film that defies easy categorisation. John Landis had originally been developing a vampire project called Red Sleep -- a wild premise about Las Vegas being run by vampires -- before Warner Bros. passed and handed him a first-time script by Michael Wolk. The film had an entirely different trajectory before Landis came aboard -- Jack Sholder had been set to direct with Lara Flynn Boyle and Dennis Hopper in the leads before creative differences saw all three replaced. Landis cast French actress Anne Parillaud fresh off La Femme Nikita, and filmed primarily in Pittsburgh's Little Italy neighbourhood after a location visit changed his original plan to shoot in Philadelphia. The MPAA initially slapped it with an NC-17, forcing further cuts to secure an R rating. Landis described his vision as "a Hammer film directed by Scorsese." Celebrate three years of Bring Me The Axe with us as we continue our annual tradition of a deep dive into the world of George A. Romero and his iconic living dead series. For our last two anniversaries we featured Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead so it only makes sense that close out year three with the highly divisive (and Bryan's favorite), Day of the Dead.  Taking place late in the zombie plague, a motley crew of scientists and military take shelter in an underground bunker, researching the cause and a possible solution to the problem at hand: mankind being driven to the brink of extinction against a worldwide zombie holocaust. Tensions are high, supplies are low, and morale is lower as the operation cracks at the seams. One scientist thinks he has a solution, demonstrated by his domesticated pet zombie, Bub. Released in 1985 as the third film in a three picture deal with United Film Distribution Company, Romero's epic vision of a horror movie, "Gone With The Wind With Zombies", to quote Romero, had to be scaled back significantly when Romero refused UFDC's mandate for an R-rated movie, insisting instead on a hyper-violent, gory spectacle. The result is languid, talky character drama cast with wild over-actors and punctuated by grisly violence and zombie carnage. It's Romero at his most conflicted but Tom Savini at his absolute best. Every now and again, the horror genre produces a film that becomes a bona fide classic. In 1980, director William Lustig and co-writer and star Joe Spinell teamed up to make what may be the defining film of the 42nd Street grindhouse era: Maniac. The film has it all, a serial-killing protagonist who scalps women while sobbing about his mother, buckets of gore from an early-career Tom Savini, and all the usual suspects of late-'70s Times Square: hookers, drugs, and utter despair. A remake, directed by Franck Khalfoun, written by Alexandre Aja, and starring Elijah Wood, arrived in 2012. This time, the action shifts to Los Angeles and leans more heavily into the mannequins that served as surrogate girlfriends in the original. Does it rise to the occasion and meet its predecessor on its own terms? We dig into that question, and much more, on this Twice Told Tales edition of the show. When I was a kid if you wanted to talk to people about movies, you went to the local mom and pop video rental store… but if you wanted to hang out with other kids your age, you went to the mall. On this week's episode of the Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four movies that were filmed and heavily feature malls.First up is Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a film that follows several teenagers as they navigate the halls and malls of southern California. With a star-studded cast, this film opens in a mall, which sets the tone for the entire film.Next up is Dawn of the Dead, George Romero's 1978 sequel to his original zombie film, Night of the Living Dead. In this film, four characters — two police officers and two news broadcasters — take cover in an abandoned mall… or is it? It's not long before the mall is crawling with zombies and, eventually, pie-throwing bikers. Known as special effects wizard Tom Savini's breakthrough film, this one features lots of bullets, brains, and blood. Third is the lesser known Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge, released in 1989. This lesser-known 80s slasher features a mall-roaming “phantom” who used to live on the land the new mall was built on. It's not a great movie, but it does feature a young and pre-MTV Pauly Shore which… well, doesn't make it any better, but does make it interesting. This movie contains lots of interior mall shots and even more bad actors. What's not to love?Rounding up this episode is one of my favorite films of all time, Chopping Mall. In this 1986 horror classic, a group of teens plan a sleepover inside a furniture store inside their local mall. Unfortunately for them, that same night lightning strikes the building which short circuits the robots and turn them into killbots! If yo always wanted to know what would happen if Johnny 5 went bad — no, like, really bad — this will let you know.Today's malls are nothing like they were back in the 1980s. If you want to see what they were like in their heyday, check out one of these films. Malls were full of lights, food, shopping… and apparently, lots of murder. This is a public episode. Just like last year with the Dawn Of The Dead remake being posted on Halloween itself, the 694th episode on Have You Ever Seen is a redo of a horror classic that hits the airwaves on Scary Day. Tom Savini came up with a solid take on Romero's signature film, which basically invented the zombie movie back in 1968. There's a lot of bickering and boarding in the 1990 Night Of The Living Dead, but there's also better acting than in the original. The newer one is arguably more intense as well. The recently-departed Tony Todd and stuntwoman Patricia Tallman make for a strong team out in that country house that's both besieged by zombies and filled with human in-fighting. This episode Nez and Brian take a trip out to Pennsylvania to hold up in a isolated farm house from a horde of flesh eating ghouls in the 1990 Tom Savini film NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. For reasons unknown, the recently deceased are rising from the grave as flesh-hungry zombies. Fleeing from the undead horde, a small group of survivors, including Barbara (Patricia Tallman), Ben (Tony Todd) and Harry (Tom Towles), sequester themselves in a remote farmhouse.
