Initially considered "just another slasher film" during its 1983 release, Sleepaway Camp has since emerged as a cult classic due to its talented young cast, remarkable practical effects, and notorious ending. But although the queer themes explored in its memorable final moments were initially intended to shock and unsettle audiences, Sleepaway Camp's empathetic portrayal of its unlikely killer sets it apart from other "trans panic" films of its time.  Together, BJ & Harmony Colangelo assess where Sleepaway Camp falls in the slasher canon and do a deep dive on the film's themes and legacy, exploring how changing attitudes towards the LGBT community has led to both a reclamation and necessary critique of the film by modern audiences.  Sleepaway Camp's divisive reputation has inspired a decades-long debate that changes alongside the attitudes and culture of its viewers. Through historical context, personal memoir, and film history, the Wives Colangelo explain what's kept audiences talking about Angela Baker and Camp Arawak after all these years. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support

Ricky and his shy, reserved cousin Angela are spending the summer at Camp Arawak, a bargain basement overnight camp in upstate New York run by Mel, cigar-chomping shyster, and staffed by a bunch of adult and teenage degenerates.  Angela is initially withdrawn, occasionally catatonic – but is soon brought out of her shell by Ricky's friend Paul, who takes a liking to Angela in the hopes he might be able to make it with her before summer's end.  But there are forces are at work – forces determined to put the strangely distant Angela in her place.  Bunkmate and camp harlot Judy sees Angela as a weirdo, then a threat when she attracts Paul's attention.  Counselor Meg, who can't get Angela to eat, play sports, or swim, constantly berates Angela for her failure to thrive.  That's when the murders begin, one at a time, first a staffer, then a camper, and on and on.  Mel tries to hide it due to the bad publicity, but as any good camp director knows, murder's bad for business, and the more we learn about Angela's murky past, the more things at Camp Arawak take a turn… for the deadly. For about 95% of its runtime, this 80’s slasher flick operates as an oddly bloodless, weirdly sexless, and overall kind of annoying ripoff of "Friday the 13th". Writer and director Robert Hiltzik mines little tension from his story of a youth summer camp besieged by a killer dumping boiling water on pervy camp cooks and stabbing counselors in the shower, "Psycho"-style. It's all very rote and by-the-bloody-books until the film's final minutes, when a last-second twist and some wonky special effects combine into one of the most disturbing images in horror movie history. So grab an extra flashlight and watch out of night snakes as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Charlie Cotter, go to Camp Arawak to discuss all things “Sleepaway Camp” from 1983 on this episode of the 80’s Flick Flashback. There is no additional trivia for this episode. Short Short shorts, just so I'm clear on the shortness of said shorts. What I am really trying to say is there seems to be a fair bit of ill-fitted attire sweeping through Camp Arawak! I get it's the 80's, but this makes Kevin Bacon and his speedos look slightly overdressed over at Camp Crystal Lake! What we get in Sleepaway is a slightly 'camp' hybrid game of Cluedo & Guess Who! We ask ourselves, could sweet innocent mute Angela really be the killer? or could it be Officer Frank & 'that' Fake moustache, which certainly raises an eyebrow or 2.You've got Aunt Martha, who HMMMMMS her way to the top of the suspect list but of course, let us not rule out Mr Muscle himself, Ronnie hotpants.  So, grab your flog, cut the legs off all your trousers and let's get camping! Jamie & Doug work maintenance at Camp Arawak and over the past couple of days, they've been quite busy. Just yesterday, they had to repair one of the showers over in the girls bunkhouse as there was a 3 foot slit in the back wall. And just the day before, some kid's wicked backed up all the toilets in the boys bathroom. Sure, it looks like the camp will be shut down but they've got a lot more work to do before that day comes. When campers start succumbing to a strange series of accidents it's clear that something just isn't quite right at Camp Arawak. Also in this episode; Wes gets derailed as he talks about learning to watch horror in a group and Lydia reveals a shocking truth from her past that will leave you as speechless as the film itself! Gather ‘round now everyone. It’s almost time for this week’s review of 1983’s cult classic Sleepaway Camp! We’d hate for you to miss out on this one – no, that wouldn’t do at all. Ah, low budget indie slasher flicks are a breath of fresh air among today’s Hollywood dreck. You see, at Camp Arawak, young men actually get to be MEN: pranking, swearing, shit talking and chasing girls instead of getting ball busted by them. In spite of the friendlier environment, some haters have managed to sneak into the camp, but fortunately Aunt Martha’s disturbed little niece knows the nuts (see what I did there?) and bolts of dealing with these miscreants. Sadly, Angela’s teen angst has a body count that’s a little too high, and she ends up taking out not just the haters and pedos, but regular dudes who just like to prank and hurl a few insults. But nothing, and we mean NOTHING, can prepare you for the surprise ending that will sear itself into your memory for the rest of your life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bmoviebreakdown/support

We enjoyed a night out at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where we attended an all-night camp themed film festival. Join us at the event, as we report the experience! Thanks for joining us! Sleepaway Camp (1983) R After a horrible boating accident kills her family, Angela, a shy and sullen young girl, moves in with her eccentric aunt Martha, alongside her protective cousin Ricky. One summer, Martha sends the kids to Camp Arawak. Soon after their arrival, a series of bizarre and increasingly violent accidents begins to claim the lives of various campers. Who is the twisted individual behind these murders? The disclosure of the murderer's identity is the most shocking climax in the history of American cinema.
