What do horror movies and your pet's sense of safety have in common? More than you'd think. This week, Ellen and Emily get delightfully spooky as they unpack how elements that make horror films terrifying, like the lighting, sound, movement, and unpredictability, can actually teach us how to create safer, more predictable, and more empathetic environments for the animals (and humans!) in our care. From jump scares to dryer growls, to “Don't be Michael Myers,” this episode explores how understanding fear responses across species can help us support our pets' well-being and strengthen our bond with them.If you've ever wondered why your dog hesitates in the dark hallway or why your cat bolts at a strange noise, this episode will make you see your home through their eyes. Listen in to learn how to turn your pet's horror movie moments into feelings of safety, security, and trust.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 1️⃣ Lighting, Sound, and Movement Matter – Subtle environmental cues like dim lighting, rumbling sounds, or direct eye contact can evoke fear. Adjusting them can help your pet feel safer and more relaxed.2️⃣ Predictability Builds Safety – Just like we find comfort in rewatching familiar movies, our pets thrive when they can anticipate what's coming next. Predictable routines and clear communication create calm, confident learners.3️⃣ Don't Be Michael Myers – How we move, approach, and present ourselves affects how animals perceive us. Softening your body language and giving clear, consistent cues helps your pet know you're safe to be around, even when you're stressed. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips
Some THING is wrong. On Missing Real. So...are you intrigued? Concerned? That was more or less the menacing tagline I heard on the TV commercials back when this cheap sci-fi shlock was out in the theaters. I didn't see it until I rented the VHS tape from Blockbuster (speaking of: this movie sure wasn't one!) and saw what the big deal was. One good sign was that it starred pinup favorite and Charlie's Angel Farrah Fawcett. The legendary Kirk Douglas was on board as well. And some fellow named Harvey Keitel, who I'd never heard of, or HEARD, so I simply accepted his dubbed voice as legit. I know much better now, but back then I'd be so thrilled over any movie with an alien monster or, in this case, killer robot who walks so slowly he makes Michael Myers look like Usain Bolt. It ain't scary, and the special effect aren't so special, but it's a bit of a cult classic. A movie doesn't have to be great to be loved. The same might be said of podcasts, and now you can have both all wrapped in one amazing audio gift package. I'll bet you that whatever you're planning to listen to today, my Saturn 3 podcast will run rings around it!

HORROR-IKONEN gesucht. "Can I please get another glass of Chardonnay please?" We're back on our horror icon Michael Myers this week as we look back at Halloween: H20. Released for the 20th anniversary of John Carpenter's original summer of 1998, it was an early capitalizer of nostalgia culture, this time scrapping 4, 5, and 6 (The Thorn Trilogy) in favor of a more streamlined story. Jamie Lee Curtis is back playing Laurie Strode, after a seventeen-year hiatus. Laurie is in hidding after faking her own death after the events of Halloween II, and is the head mistress of a excluvie west coast boarding school. It's the type of soap oprea backstory we love, and the Spanish style board school gives it an odd flavor that all of the movies don't have. The end result is a short and sweet little 90s post-Scream slasher. Seriously, with credits, this movie runs a brisk 86 minutes, that includes the ten-minute prologue before the credits. When JLC appears on screen, there are under seventy minutes left! We talk about Kevin Williamson's uncredited rewrite, its very WB-friendly cast, and don't worry, we talk extensively about Josh Harnett's goat-crewed bangs. The hair deserves its own Wikipedia page at this point. H20 is hardly a perfect movie, but we stand by that it has aged better than most of the sequels, including the recent David Gordon Green movies. It's Halloween, everyone is entitled to one good scare! Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! In this time traveling episode of Second Breakfast, we're finally tackling the godfather of the slasher genre, John Carpenter's Halloween. We start with a simple question: why is this the best slasher movie? The answer involves gestural structure and a paradoxical approach to pacing. We also get into a spirited debate about the mysterious motive of our beloved Michael Myers. Is he supernatural? Are his crimes random? What roles do sexuality and cultural puritanism play in this story? Finally, we revisit some of the best analysis of the film that we've done over the past five (!) years. Wrapping up a trilogy is always a tough pumpkin to carve -- a lesson director David Gordon Green learned with Halloween Ends, the climax of his otherwise financially successful Blumhouse "legacy" series that began with 2018's Halloween and carried through with 2021's Halloween Kills. Despite strong production values and the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, the film met with fan backlash and muted box office returns, due in part to the shift in focus from Michael Myers to a new slasher character, the unpopular Corey. But is it really as bad as all that? Join superfans Sebastian and Matt Anderson as they slash it out once and for all to determine if this is a worthy end to the franchise. Trick or treat, motherf**cker!

Monsters come in many forms and each has its own definition and interpretation. Sometimes monsters are separate from other scary creatures and other times they help categorize them. In the pre-ancient world, monsters were natural disasters and phenomena, symbolized by Titans. We actually create Titan-like gods today when we name hurricanes, and we perform appeasement rituals when we advocate for green policies and products to stop the destruction of an attack. In the ancient world monsters were outsiders, people with birth defects, people who were deformed from an accident, people who were tall or short (relatively), etc. Today we take the tall and small alike and profit from them still in the form of entertainment just as they were paraded through royal palaces in the past in Europe. In the pre-modern world, the latter ideas were maintained but monsters were shaped into theological demons, largely extracted from vegetation myths and zealous-imagination. More modern monsters have been defined by movies, ecology, and psychology. Also, from Dracula and Michael Myers to Godzilla and zombies, science can explain just as much as the supernatural classifications can. Dracula sucks “life force,” Michael is “pure evil” that cannot be killed, Godzilla is the folly of man, and zombies may be formed by drugs or fungus. Horror is such because it brings the abnormal to view, by sound, children, clowns, dolls and the general “uncanny valley.” The fear of snakes and danger of electricity certainly contributed to Medusa's ability, just as deer antlers contributed to the devil. Humans have also grown horns or tales, even in contemporary times, while some have suffered from clawed hands from ectrodactyly. Modern political and religious monsters are in abundance, too, and some are so vile they essentially suffer from clinical lycanthropy. Unable to control their emotions they transform into beasts and scream like a banshee. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Tune in to hear all about how he was cast and his approach to portraying this iconic horror villain, the endings that were filmed but never made it to screen, and how emotional it got working with Jamie Lee Curtis on that final battle in “Halloween Ends.”

This week's episode takes a sharp turn into the shadows as we welcome back actor Josh Warren, who joins us fresh off his appearance in Shudder's new reality competition series “Guts and Glory,” produced by none other than Greg Nicotero of The Walking Dead fame. Josh shares what it's like to be on the blood-soaked set (at least as much as his NDA allows), and gives us a peek behind the curtain of this wild new horror challenge. Then, we go full slasher mode as the gang dives headfirst into every Halloween movie in the Michael Myers franchise — all 13 of them. From Carpenter's classic to Rob Zombie's gritty remakes to the recent Blumhouse trilogy, we rank, debate, and resurrect decades of Haddonfield mayhem. It's a killer combo of horror nostalgia, behind-the-scenes talk, and pop-culture carnage that only Radio Labyrinth could deliver.

It's the season finale of Rogues Gallery, and our final investigation of the year leads us into the eerily empty halls of Hillcrest Academy for a look back at Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. What began as a modest direct-to-video sequel was reborn as a prestige anniversary event, bringing Jamie Lee Curtis back for one last confrontation with the Shape... or so we thought. We dig into how a late-stage rewrite and a scrapped subplot shaped this sleek, surprisingly brisk entry, and whether the glossy, post-Scream style enhances or undermines what made the early films so haunting. Along the way, we also unpack the chaotic saga of the four different Michael Myers masks, the eleventh-hour overhaul of its controversial score, and whether or not it truly delivers the cathartic ending it intended. Finally, we debate where H20 ranks among the Halloween films we've covered thus far, and Kristen makes her predictions for the next entry. Our next season begins in February 2026.
