Join me for historical tales from the iron age through to the emergence of gunpowder (I lose interest then). I research my stories based around a peculiar event or a character that amuses me. What develops from there can often lead to some surprising tales and some interesting perspectives to well known events. I have plenty of projects half written, jotted down on the back of a beer mat or stored in the depths of my memory somewhere so keep checking back for more content.
This is a short podcast about the Kiplingcotes Derby, a race that has taken place since the Tudor's sat on the throne. Quite remarkable really! For the video of the event follow the link below. https://youtu.be/mJIrr5mCIwg
Margaret was a remarkable woman, a pilgrim caught up in the holy wars for Jerusalem. Follow her on her arduous journey as she is three times captured by Muslim forces as she desperately seeks safety on her return journey from the most holy of cities. I hope you enjoy.
The story of Sir John Hotham 'the traitor at the gate' is well told in the city of Hull and being a local I have heard it many times before. However, there is a whole year between Hotham refusing the King entry to the city and his capture and it turns out this is the most interesting part of the story. I don't understand why all the best bits have been discarded over the years.....so I aim to change that. This is a story of plot, intrigue, spying and double crossing that will follow John Hotham and the residents of Beverley as we discover the events surrounding the start of The English Civil War. I hope you enjoy. stepthroughhistory@gmail.com
As Robert the Bruce wrestles the Scottish Kingdom back from the English, it would be the north of England that would take the brunt of the long conflict. This tale takes you to Yorkshire, where a small town, preparing for the arrival of a rampant Scottish army relied on a peculiar and untested method of defence. This is a complete overhaul of an earlier story, I am hoping to tell this tale from the locations in the story for my you tube channel, head on over for that and more.
follow the you tube link for the video of this story. https://youtu.be/4kOaVE_EV6M This is a tale about the first major push for Christianity in the Anglo-Saxon world and covers the life of King Edwin, one of the great rulers of Northumbria. It still surprises me after writing it that such a roller coaster tale takes place in a period spanning less than 40 years. I hope you enjoy. As soon as the weather is nice I will make a video of this story for my you tube channel.
Just a little snippet from my next big story and I've thrown in the life of John Fisher as a cheeky bonus too....now I will get back to writing it. It is rather good even if I do say so myself. UPDATE this is taking much longer to write as I have found so much out that it is taking quite a while to formulate it in to a coherent and tight narrative but it will be worth it I promise
Aldfrith is a Northumbrian King rarely mentioned, rarely written about and often confused with others. Despite this I have researched his life and I firmly believe he is far more important and influential than the records show. After a period of military powerhouses like Edwin, Oswald and Oswiu dominating the Anglo_Saxon Heptarchy, the scene was set for a Northumbrian Golden Age in religion and learning. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. So how does an unknown like Aldfrith fit in to it all? Within a month or two (hopefully sooner) of this release I will have taken my camera out to the locations mentioned in the story and will upload the video to my you tube channel. If you haven't already taken a visit you will find the videos of my podcasts. Hope you enjoy. Follow the link to watch the video of this podcast and the to view the rest of my channel https://youtu.be/2hU1qaurZyM This story takes us from the formation of England to the Harrying of the North. With the help of a Saint and the giving of a gift, Athelstan will bring the lands of East Riding in to the control of the 'English'. Over a century later and William the Conqueror, seemingly unstoppable, continues to cement his rule in England leaving areas of the north unable to sustain a rebellion...or life itself. That is until he ravages the land of St John...I hope you enjoy it :)
This a story showing one of the many events that took place during the long and arduous task of forging the Kingdom of England, which was by no means an obvious conclusion at times. Athelstan, with a little help from a large army and a saint not short on miracles, uses his political skill to bring the land north of the Humber under West Saxon rule.
Something new for a well trodden tale. I have found this incredible story whilst digging around my local archives. In the midst of his oppressive slaughter and destruction of Northumbria, William hears of slain knights who had crossed paths with a monster in the Church of St John, Beverley.....or so the scared survivors say. This is the tale of how one place gained a reprieve from the massacre that was the harrying of the north.
The portrayal of Leeds in The Last Kingdom has always interested me, it seems so sparse. I decided to scour my bookshelves to try and find out what the land in and around Loidis would have been like as Ragnar The Fearless arrives on the scene in the 9th Century......according to the fictional tale The Last Kingdom of course. There are a few minor spoilers so I would avoid viewing until you have watched the first episode of the show. Below are the links mentioned in the video. One of the great mysteries in the history of the British Isles is where exactly was the Battle of Brunanburh fought? How can the skeletons, weapons and armour of one of the most almighty battles of all time still elude historians and archaeologists alike? Despite having no evidence or answers I have decided to wade in to the debate anyway armed with nothing more than an old and interesting source, detailing the histories of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Could this shed new light on an old conundrum? Was the East Riding of Yorkshire really where the great battle took place?
