Octobre 2006, dans les studios de RTC, la chaîne locale liégeoise, c'est petits fours et sandwiches mous. Les résultats des élections communales sont connus. Les femmes et les hommes politiques défilent. Michel Daerden, arrive, tout content d'avoir triomphé à Ans. Il aperçoit une caméra de la RTBF. Il exige de la journaliste de pouvoir passer à l'antenne immédiatement. Menaçant, insultant il devra pourtant attendre son tour. Mais quand il viendra, une minute et trois secondes vont le faire entrer dans une autre dimension. Visiblement ivre Michel Daerden, évoque des "grraaands accooords", un "scoooore extraaaaordinaire". Sa prestation prête à sourire. On se moque gentiment de son côté clown. Il se rend ensuite sur le plateau de RTC, la chaîne locale. Il est interrogé au côté de son fils Frédéric Daerden. Entre les deux passages, il enfile quelques verres de rouge supplémentaires. Sur RTC Michel Daerden dissipe les quelques doutes qui restaient, il est bien ivre. Il explique un score plus élevé que prévu par les sondages : "Le Monde de gauche comprend tout ce que j'ai fait pour lui". Quand il cherche à expliquer le score de son fils, il parvient à peine à prononcer le mot "Frédéric". Invités : François Brabant, rédacteur en chef de WIlfried. De Jurbena Jazz Band is een van de weinige jazz bands in de wereld die nog de echte onvervalste Frisco Jazz ten gehore brengen. Een band uit Brabant die de wereld verovert. Reacties: jazztrain@studio040.nl

Beminnaars van de zware muziekstijlen weten dat Roadburn te Tilburg traditiegetrouw de aftrap is van het festivalseizoen. Als je dezelfde kwestie zou voorleggen aan de wat meer doorsnee muziekluisteraar, zal deze echter een ander antwoord geven: Poaspop in Skèndel! Oftewel: Paaspop te Schijndel. Deze twee festivals kunnen niet verder uit elkaar liggen in vrijwel elk aspect. Waar de één een viering is van kunst op de moeilijkst mogelijke manier, focust de ander zich volledig op de weg van de minste weerstand. De enige overeenkomst lijkt wel de geografische locatie. Maar dit jaar is er een tweede overeenkomst: ze overlappen ook op de kalender. De heren van Osmium, de zwaarste podcast in het Nederlands, zou je verwachten op Tilburgse grond, maar de ietwat tegenvallende line-up van de Roadburn zondag zorgt voor wat discussies tussen het duo. Na wat wikken en wegen worden de oorverdovende gitaren en complexe artistieke kronkelingen verruild voor een buffet aan (on)zin in muzikale en theatrale vorm. Met ogen en oren zo maagdelijk als twee kuikens die net uit hun paasei zijn gekropen, zetten Pim en Niels voet op Schijndelse grond, alwaar zij optredens bezoeken van de volksheld van Brabant, een boerenrockband én een countryzangeres uit Overijssel, een Amsterdams elektronica-collectief dat culturele toe-eigening tot een kunst verheft, een dancehall DJ die er totaal anders uitziet dan op zijn persfoto, en een coverband die een cover speelt van een cover. Navigerend door dit rariteitenkabinet filosoferen de heren over of dit nu daadwerkelijk een leuk festival is, en hoe het zich verhoudt tot hun vertrouwde Tilburgse thuishaven. Verrassend modern ook zijn bewuste soberheid en scherp oog voor integriteit. Zijn admiraal Michiel de Ruyter konden rekenen op het allerbeste van hightech der marine. De Witt was geen dorknoper. Hij ging met een leuke Nassau-prinses naar de kermis en genoot met volle teugen. Roddels gonsden over het Binnenhof. Hij speelde viola da gamba en was een gangmaker op feesten en partijen. Maar zijn echte passies waren zijn innig geliefde Wendela Bicker, mathematische raadsels en regeren. Vanuit een klein ambtelijk vertrek in het gebouw waar in onze tijd de Eerste Kamer zit, leidde hij met enkele klerken het Republikeins bewind dynamisch en met korte lijnen. Met zijn netwerk van 'de vrunden' regeerde hij de Staten van Holland, de Staten-Generaal, de hele Republiek, maar ook over de machtsverhoudingen in Europa en de wereldwijde koloniale handelsimperia. Onder zijn bondgenoten zelfs de sultan in Istanboel en de Mughal heersers van India.Twee mensen met een groot machtsinstinct en grote allure als vorsten waren cruciaal voor zijn succes. En voor zijn ondergang. Oranje-weduwe Amalia van Solms koos - in het belang van haar strategie voor de dynastie - voor een alliantie met Johan de Witt, tegen de manipulaties van het Britse hof. De jonge koning Lodewijk de Veertiende van Frankrijk vleide 'mon bon ami et allié conféderé', maar kreeg allengs schoon genoeg van De Witts gedurige triomfen in het verdeel- en heersspel van de grootmachten. Lodewijk bleek een machiavellist waar zelfs De Witt door overrompeld werd. 'L'état c'est moi' hield een gewetenloosheid en strategische visie in die hij zich vermoedelijk niet kon voorstellen.Johans geopolitieke visie en zijn hondsbrutale militaire acties joegen de vijanden in Londen en Versailles in elkaars armen. Ineens trokken ze samen op tegen de mercantiele en koloniale oppermacht van dat kleine, overmoedige staatje aan de Noordzee. De Witt moest een kopje kleiner gemaakt. Hun oorlog mikte erop dat Frankrijk België, Brabant en Limburg zou kapen, Duitse vorsten het Oosten en Noorden van de Republiek en de Britten Holland en Zeeland als vazalstaatje onder Oranje bewind. Paniek brak los. Het volk was redeloos, het land reddeloos en de regering radeloos.De Witt verloor de greep op de Haagse politiek. De Oranje-factie greep de macht, hitste het volk op en liet Johan en zijn broer Cornelis in 1672 gruwelijk vermoorden.De jonge prins Willem III – als ‘Kind van Staat' opgevoed onder leiding van Johan - won de oorlog met veel geluk en vernuft. Kissinger was niet voor niks zo'n bewonderaar van Willem III. Zijn triomf in 'the Glorious Revolution' van 1688-89 - een soort anti-Brexit! - was postuum ook die van De Witt en zijn grootmoeder Amalia.400 haar geleden is Johan de Witt geboren. Met Jean-Marc van Tol belichten Jaap en PG vele nieuwe aspecten van zijn leven en werk. This Day in Legal History: Fair Housing ActOn this day in legal history, April 11, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 into law, a pivotal expansion of civil rights protections in the United States. Commonly referred to as the Fair Housing Act, the legislation was enacted just days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose legacy of nonviolent activism heavily influenced its passage. The law made it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, financing, or advertising of housing based on race, color, religion, or national origin.It aimed to dismantle the systemic barriers that had long segregated American cities and suburbs, including redlining, racially restrictive covenants, and other discriminatory practices. Title VIII of the Act directly addressed these inequities and empowered the federal government to enforce fair housing standards for the first time. Though political resistance to housing integration had stalled similar legislation for years, the national mourning following Dr. King's death shifted public and congressional sentiment.Johnson, in a nationally televised address, described the signing as a tribute to Dr. King's life and a necessary step toward realizing the full promise of civil rights in America. Subsequent amendments expanded protections to include sex, disability, and familial status, making the Fair Housing Act one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws on the books. Enforcement mechanisms, however, remained a challenge, and litigation over housing discrimination has continued into the present day.The law has been central to major legal battles over zoning laws, gentrification, and access to affordable housing. It also laid the groundwork for subsequent legislation aimed at combating economic and racial segregation. While the Act did not instantly eliminate housing discrimination, it marked a legal turning point that recognized the home as a critical site of equality and opportunity.A small team from the Department of Government Efficiency (DGE), created under Elon Musk's initiative to reduce government spending and staffing, has arrived at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC), according to an internal email from the agency. While the team is working with FDIC leadership to identify internal efficiencies, it does not have access to sensitive or confidential bank data, including resolution plans, deposit insurance records, or examination materials. The FDIC emphasized that the DGE operatives are full-time federal employees working under formal interagency agreements and have not sought access to confidential information.DGE has previously drawn concern from industry participants during its visit to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau due to fears over data exposure. The FDIC oversees highly sensitive information about major U.S. banks and their failure plans, which regulators rely on during crises. The number and identity of DGE team members at the FDIC have not been disclosed, and the agency declined to comment further.The agency is also preparing for staff reductions, following the Trump administration's deferred resignation program that has already led to the loss of 500 FDIC employees. The potential deal is also intended to resolve federal investigations into the firms' diversity programs, which the administration has scrutinized for alleged discriminatory practices. If finalized, the arrangement would bring the total pledged in pro bono services from various firms to at least $640 million.President Trump, speaking at a Cabinet meeting, hinted that a handful of firms remain in negotiations, emphasizing that many firms have already paid significant sums or made concessions. He stated that he expects lawyers from participating firms to assist with policy efforts such as implementing tariffs and expanding coal mining.The administration has previously targeted several firms with executive orders for representing causes or clients viewed as oppositional to Trump's agenda. Khalil, who holds Algerian citizenship and became a lawful U.S. permanent resident last year, was arrested last month at his New York City apartment and transferred to an immigration jail in rural Louisiana. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for Khalil's removal under the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act, arguing that his presence in the U.S. poses foreign policy risks due to his role in pro-Palestinian campus protests.Rubio's letter to the court claims Khalil was involved in “antisemitic protests and disruptive activities” but does not accuse him of any crimes. Natuurbrand in het Gelderse Ede en een sproeiverbod in Brabant: de droogte is terug in ons land. Afgelopen maart was de droogste maart sinds het begin van de metingen in 1906. En die droogte kan uiteindelijk ook gevolgen gaan hebben voor ons drinkwater. Het RIVM verwacht in 2030 door het hele land een tekort aan water uit de kraan. Wat is daar aan te doen? In Podcast De Dag vertelt hoogleraar Drinkwaterkwaliteit & Zuivering aan de Technische Universiteit Delft Doris van Halem hoe ons drinkwater zo goed is geworden en hoe erg het nu onder druk staat. Waterbedrijven, de provincies en het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat presenteerden begin dit jaar een actieplan dat ervoor moet zorgen dat er over vijf jaar nog steeds water uit de kraan komt. Patrick Martens groeide op in een klein dorp in Brabant. Over homoseksualiteit werd - zeker in die tijd - niet gesproken, of alleen met veel haat en walging. ,,Flikker, vieze homo… Als je dat soort woorden steeds hoort, denk je op een gegeven moment: ik wil dat niet zijn. Ik dook steeds dieper in de schaamte.’’ ,,Ik wist al op jonge leeftijd: ik ben homo. En dat is superkut. Maar als ik een heel lief, aardig mens word, valt het misschien minder op.’’ Pleasen werd zijn overlevingsmechanisme. Patrick probeerde voortdurend te voldoen aan de verwachtingen van anderen. ,,Ik dacht altijd dat een coming-out een enorme bevrijding zou zijn. Toen het eindelijk zover was, kwam ik in een ugly cry terecht. Alle stress en spanning van 23 jaar kwam eruit. Ik kon niks meer, alleen maar keihard huilen, huilen, huilen.’’ Maar nadat het hoge woord eruit was, bleef hij achter met schaamte. De weg naar zelfliefde bleek lang. ,,Ik was wel out, maar totaal niet proud’’, zegt hij. ,,Ik kon mezelf nog steeds niet accepteren en schakelde over in een andere versnelling: veel feesten met heel veel drank en drugs. Ik heb mezelf echt kapot willen maken.’’ Na het overlijden van zijn vader besloot Patrick de tijger in de ogen te kijken. Het schrijven van het boek hielp – net als een ayahuasca-trip, die hem een cruciaal inzicht bracht. ,,Ik gaf mezelf een knuffel en zei: jongen, het komt goed.’’ En ‘goedkomen’ betekent voor Martens niet dat alles perfect is – integendeel. ,,Ik gun iedereen een jaar waarin alles kut gaat. Trees for All is een stichting die donaties inzamelt bij bedrijven en particulieren om bomen te planten en natuurprojecten op te zetten. Jaarlijks haalt de stichting ongeveer 10 miljoen euro op. Daarmee plant ze 2 miljoen bomen in Nederland en een aantal projecten in de tropen. Stef Röell is de nieuwe directeur Projecten en Innovatie van Trees for All. We spreken hem op een plantdag nabij Schijndel, in het Groene Woud middenin Brabant. Stef vertelt hoe de strategie van de organisatie langzaam verschuift, ook omdat er in ons land weinig grond beschikbaar is voor natuurontwikkeling. Trees for All werkt tegenwoordig ook aan het vergroenen van stedelijk gebied, industrieterreinen en schoolpleinen. Interessante tendens: Stef constateert dat voor zakelijke donateurs biodiversiteit een steeds belangrijker thema wordt.  

In De Telegraaf was vandaag te lezen dat vorig jaar een recordaantal drugslabs ontmanteld zijn in de provincie Noord-Brabant. Drugscoördinator Freek Pecht van de politie zegt daarover tegen de krant: "Als er een nieuwe drug opkomt, dan zien we die vaak als eerste op de markt in Brabant." Maar is dat ook zo?

Dat zegt een dakdekker uit Den Bosch in een opmerkelijk interview met omroep Brabant-verslaggever Noël van Hooft, dat hij in deze podcast laat horen. De afgelopen week gingen er bijna iedere dag explosieven af bij dakdekkers in Den Bosch. Ook vannacht was er weer een ontploffing. Sinds juli was het al bijna 20 keer raak. Wat is er aan de hand?  De burgemeester van Zaanstad, Jan Hamming, ziet parallellen met problemen die er in zijn stad zijn met glazenwassers. Daar wordt sinds deze zomer met een vergunningplicht gewerkt. Maar, erkent hij, daarmee is het probleem niet verholpen. Hij roept in de podcast op tot een landelijk beleid, want er zitten volgens hem 'maffiose ondernemers' en criminele bendes achter deze wanpraktijken.
