The book explains the nature of guilds at this period, emphasising their male-dominated nature that limited women's formal participation while still allowing them to play significant roles within household economies. Among other topical issues examined in the book are the institutional factors that shaped women's economic roles in the 16th century, with details on how households in Brabant functioned as economic units with women managing income and administration. Also, the book explained how institutions such as guilds, households, informal markets, and town governments shaped women's economic opportunities in the 16th century. Through a comparative approach, the book allows for a deeper understanding of women's visibility and economic conditions, particularly through the analysis of taxation registers and the public versus private nature of women's work in different trades. The book contains a more nuanced comparison between specific regions in Europe, including Brabant and Biscay, to provide explanation on the North-South divide. The adoption of a comparative approach in the book enables a detailed analysis of women's labor opportunities including the fish trade, bread trade, itinerant informal trading, merchant activity and artisan work by examining two distinct regions. Nous sommes au tout début du XIIIe siècle, les ducs de Brabant, qui règnent sur Bruxelles et sa région, sont devenus les propriétaires de la forêt de Soignes. C'est un événement fondateur qui scelle le destin du massif : elle devient domaine de prestige dédié à la chasse. Cette appartenance princière permet à la forêt d'échapper aux grands défrichements médiévaux qui ont transformé le reste de l'Europe. Soignes est, aujourd'hui, une véritable machine à remonter le temps. Ainsi conserve-t-elle, sous ses strates les traces d'un village fortifié vieux de plus de 5000 ans. Elle nous rappelle la chute de l'Empire romain et la naissance de frontières entre pays germaniques et pays latins. La présence des communautés religieuses, comme Rouge-Cloître, qui y géraient les étangs et les ressources dès le XIVe siècle. A la fin du XVIIIe siècle, un jardinier autrichien impose la plantation systématique de hêtres, créant une sorte de cathédrale naturelle. Au XIXe siècle, la forêt subit un dépeçage brutal perdant plus de 60 % de sa surface initiale au profit du capitalisme naissant. Le roi Léopold II contribuera à sa sauvegarde et à son embellissement en léguant à l'État des domaines prestigieux comme l'Arboretum de Tervuren, mais cela n'empêchera pas les amputations provoquées par le développement des transports comme le chemin de fer et, plus tard, la voiture. La forêt n'échappera pas non plus aux conséquences de la régionalisation de sa gestion. Aujourd'hui, la protection de ce poumon vert est renforcée par son classement au réseau Natura 2000. Et en 2017, la reconnaissance internationale lui est acquise par l'inscription d'une partie du territoire au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Un patrimoine unique qui reste fragile. Nous sommes en 1420, à Bruxelles. Jean IV de Brabant, fils d'Antoine, duc de Brabant et de Limbourg, et de Jeanne de Luxembourg, comtesse de Saint-Pol et de Ligny, voit la confiance que lui portent ses sujets fondre comme neige au soleil. Que lui reproche-t-on ? Notamment ses prodigalités excessives. Qu'à cela ne tienne : Jean choisit l'exil. Il n'est pas seul, quelques représentants de la haute société, des patriciens, ont choisi de l'accompagner. Ensemble, ils mettent sur pied une coalition contre Bruxelles. C'est ainsi que Jean parvient à rassembler une troupe de 1500 cavaliers et chevauchent sur la ville. Podcast De Boekenparade tipt in elke aflevering een boek om voor te lezen aan je kinderen. Kinderboekenexpert Sara van Forum Groningen kiest een boek waar Jeroen van Studio Hoorzaam uit voorleest. Ze zoeken daarbij een haakje bij het Forum. In deze aflevering bespreken we een spiksplinternieuw boek, volledig in kerstsfeer. In Flos en het glazen paleis worden we meegenomen naar Amsterdam in de tijd van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Flos woont bij zijn opa en oma in Brabant, maar wordt voor de kerst opgehaald door zijn moeder om kerst en Flos' verjaardag met haar in Amsterdam door te brengen. Flos' moeder blijkt alleen weinig tijd voor hem te hebben, omdat ze druk bezig is met het kersttoneelstuk dat zij met haar theatergezelschap in Paleis voor Volksvlijt zal opvoeren tijdens kerst. In deze herkenbare vertelling zitten elementen van waargebeurde elementen verwoven met een bekend kerstverhaal van Charles Dickens Scrooge. Tip 1: Circus op zee - Eveline Baar In dit verhaal volg je twee verschillende meiden. Jula, die in deze tijd in Almelo woont en Lot, die in 1934 woont in het circus. Het zijn twee avontuurlijke verhalen in andere tijden, over twee dappere meisjes die toch meer bij elkaar komen dan verwacht.  De schrijver heeft voor dit boek informatie geput uit het leven van haar opa die als journalist meeging op het schip van Circus Sarrasani dat Joodse artiesten in veiligheid bracht tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tip 2: De Grompus - Alex T. Smith Een kerstig voorleesverhaal voor het hele gezin met een combinatie tussen de Duitse folklore Krampus die op kwaadaardige wijze kinderen wil ontvoeren én De Grinch. Een heel grappig boek over een chagrijnige mopperkont die Kerstmis wil stoppen en dat eigenhandig aan de Kerstman duidelijk wil maken. Het boek heeft mooie illustraties, waardoor je je helemaal in een winterwonderland waant. Goed boek om samen te lezen als de kerststress de overhand neemt in huis. Le 2 février 1997, dans la brume glacée du Brabant wallon, des dizaines de milliers de personnes marchent pour sauver les Forges de Clabecq. Au cœur du mouvement, Roberto d'Orazio, syndicaliste charismatique de la FGTB, devient le symbole d'une Belgique ouvrière en lutte. Face à la mondialisation et à la fermeture du site, il défie le pouvoir politique, les banques et l'Europe entière. La Marche multicolore pour l'emploi devient un cri de résistance, porté par un peuple épuisé mais debout. L'histoire de Clabecq, c'est celle d'une région sacrifiée, où les hauts-fourneaux s'éteignent un à un. Derrière les grilles, 1 800 familles voient leur avenir s'effondrer. Les tensions montent, les affrontements éclatent, et la justice s'en mêle. Quelques années plus tard, les Forges ferment définitivement, scellant la fin d'une ère industrielle. Aujourd'hui encore, les anciens ouvriers se battent pour obtenir justice. Clabecq reste le symbole d'un combat social historique, celui d'hommes et de femmes refusant de plier face à l'injustice économique. Entre 1982 et 1985, une bande criminelle frappe la Belgique avec une violence inouïe : 28 morts, dont des enfants. Leurs attaques, visant surtout des supermarchés pour des butins dérisoires, sèment la terreur dans tout le pays. L'affaire du Colruyt de Nivelles en 1983, où un gendarme est exécuté, marque un tournant. Rapidement, on les surnomme les « Tueurs du Brabant ». L'enquête accumule fausses pistes et erreurs judiciaires, notamment avec la filière boraine. Les hypothèses oscillent entre complot politique et simples truands sanguinaires. Le dernier carnage, à Alost en 1985, fait 8 morts. Puis la bande disparaît à jamais. Malgré 40 ans d'investigations et d'innombrables théories (piste française, anciens gendarmes, services secrets), aucune vérité judiciaire n'a émergé. En 2024, le parquet fédéral clôt l'instruction faute d'éléments nouveaux. Les Tueurs du Brabant restent l'énigme criminelle la plus sombre de Belgique. Nous sommes le 17 novembre 1858. Dans le journal « L'Emancipation », fondé vingt-huit ans plus tôt par le liégeois Adolphe Bayet, opposant sous le régime hollandais, l'un des premiers à embrasser la cause de la Révolution de 1830, journal passé aux mains des frères Briavoinne, des Parisiens, on peut lire ceci : « Que vous dirais-je de la cuisine belge, sinon qu'elle est de l'école fantaisiste comme la cuisine allemande ; et que, très recommandable sous le rapport de l'abondance et de la qualité des mets, elle se livre à de déplorables écarts de soupe aux céleris, de potage au vin, de saucisses sucrées et de gigot aux pruneaux. Mais, somme toute, on mange fort bien, et l'on boit encore mieux en Belgique (…). Le Belge est certainement le plus beau mangeur de l'Europe : des exploits gastronomiques, qui seraient regardés en France comme actes de gloutonnerie, sont considérés en Belgique comme œuvre méritoire. Chaque province, je pourrais même dire chaque ville, a sa société de mangeurs, où l'on donne des prix (une dent d'or ou d'argent) à l'hercule-gastronome qui a absorbé la plus grande quantité de victuailles dans un temps donné ». Retenons donc que l'on mange et que l'on boit fort bien en Belgique. Et pourtant qu'aurait-on constaté si nous avions fait partie des invités, triés sur le volet, mais nous l'aurions mérité, de la grande fête d'inauguration du nouveau pont de Boom, dans la province d'Anvers, un pont de métal, ce qui est innovant pour l'époque, assurant la liaison permanente entre les deux rives du Rupel, un affluent de l'Escaut ? La compagnie est de haute volée puisque l'on note la présence de leurs Altesses Royales le duc de Brabant, futur Léopold II, et le comte de Flandre . Il y a de la pompe et le soir a lieu un banquet somptueux préparé par le cuisinier bruxellois Alphonse Dubos, surnommé le « roi de la cuisine belge », c'est vous dire. Mais que nous propose-t-il à becqueter ? Un trentaine de plats qui, excepté les huitres d'Ostende et un turbot à la hollandaise, appartiennent tous à la grande histoire de la cuisine … française ! Alors pourquoi tant de mépris pour la tradition belge ? N'y a-t-il rien qui vaille dans nos casseroles ? Revenons, aujourd'hui, sur la LENTE reconnaissance de notre patrimoine culinaire.
