Time to melt the dancefloor! Dave The Hustler is a Swiss electronic music artist, beat maker and producer. He spoke to me about the real reason people want to learn the drums, his collaboration with Felix Da Housecat and we get into the making of the amazing song "Silver Screen (Shower Scene)" which he co wrote and produced.
It's 2021 Motherfuckers, So lets start it out with Part 2 with Sandy Jimenez, where we get into the world of comic books from the 1940's through to the alternative scene in the 80's to the present day. We also talk about the positive influence of hardcore band Suicidal Tendencies, his friend, skateboarding legend Andy Kessler and music banned by catholic schools in NY that quickly became the most sought after records around.
Hey Criptcasters, I've got a special treat for Episode 10!! A 2 parter with Sandy Jimenez. Sandy is a filmmaker, illustrator and well known comics artist, creating the characters Sh!t House Poet and Marley Davidson, which appeared in the famed World War 3 Illustrated anthologies. Sandy also grew up in the Bronx where he saw the birth of hip hop while concurrently spending Sunday afternoons in the 80s at CBGB's watching the most important punk and hardcore bands of all time at the infamous all ages matinees. In Pt 1 we talk about the late 70's street parties, the route to take to get to CB's without getting mugged, and seeing Devo do a whole show running on treadmills!
What is UP, loyal fans! Ep. 9 is a very special conversation with my brother Michael about how music influenced him throughout his life. We get into the treasure trove of his Rolling Stone mags I found, how he was one of the first kids in Moncton who got Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and in my opinion Canada's most forgotten great band, the Stampeders!!
Hellooo Criptcast friends!! Today I'm talking to Jeff Edwards from OLD GHOST, and the new album MIAMI RUB, which is EXCELLENT!! Seriously do yourself a favour and listen to it, it's got to be one of the best albums of 2020 for me. Courtney Boe also sings two gorgeous the songs on the record. We talked about recording without demos, writing songs in the country and of course the Popemobile!
Your prayers have been answered! Criptcast Ep. 7 is here! Today's conversation with John Yakovou, who records under the moniker The Yak. His album is called “Four Corners” and you should download it from Bandcamp, maybe before you finish reading this intro. It's so good. He describes the album as “unapologetically rock n roll” The music satisfies like Built to Spill or Jack White, in that the songs sound like something you've heard before but they have been washed and tumbled dry in 2017, looking back and forward at once, like the best kind of time travel. If you were to imagine John's music as a cocktail, you'd have 1oz Neil Young and Crazy Horse with Pavement as the mixer, and a slice of The Band for garnish, shaken not stirred in a Colorado shaped cocktail mixer. John is an amazing guitarist and he explains the alchemy of solos, we talk about trying to keep breathing while Trump is president, and he plays an incredible solo acoustic version of his song “Vaguely” which will break your heart. Hello Criptcasters! Special episode today! I welcome author Jason Murray to talk about his great new book "A Distorted Revolution, how Eric's Trip changed Music, Moncton and Me" Eric's Trip was one of the most influential Canadian punk bands ever and one of my very favorites as well (their album "Love Tara" is listed as #39 in Bob Mersereau book "Top 100 Canadian Albums") and I was so happy to geek out with Jason about them. We also discussed life when skateboarding was a crime, growing up as a disaffected youth in the 80's and how punk rock might have actually started in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada!
The mighty Criptcast back with a very special episode. Today my guest is my mother, Nancy Cripton. She and I talk about her life and what role music played in it, what she played, what she listened to as well as a history of my own musicianship. We discuss the impact of radio, going to dances in Carleton county New Brunswick and what it was like to date a US Air Force pilot in the 1950's!!
After a bit of a hiatus, the mighty Criptcast is back!! Episode 4 features the über talented singer-songwriter/pro sponsored ukulele player Fiona Silver! Fiona has a gorgeous bluesy voice and her songs are steeped in elegant and precise poetry. Her music resides in the soul of a posh flower pushing bravely up through the cracks in the sidewalk of a pre-gentrified New York. As a special treat to fans, we feature a song she recorded as a precocious and emo 13 year old. We talked about the therapeutic nature of music making, middle school talent shows, and how ukuleles are the puppies of the stringed instrument world! Check her out at fionasilver.com
Today I'm talking to Jeff Edwards from the amazing Montreal band The Yardlets, a project which he co leads with Sam Goldberg Jr. (Broken Social Scene). He describes their sound as "Buddy Holly on Acid", While that is apt, it's also super fun adrenalized punk that'll make your head bop. Jeff and I grew up together in in the punk Petri Dish of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. We talked via facetime about the diy 80's skateboarding scene, the developmental appropriateness, nay-necessity, for boys to be ninjas, and how a famous drummer had his best session ever playing on their first album! Along the way we talk about the influences of our friends and little known luminaries Mike Pragnell, Paul Edwards and Andre Doucet, and you can hear me say "Dude, that is So Sick!" Several times to try to sound cool! Check them out here https://yardlets.bandcamp.com/
Chairman Now features as the first ever guest on the Criptcast! The new album is called Croker's Mountain and it is outstanding, fantastic and swell. The tracks on this monster ep run the gamut and therefore hard to describe...kind of like if Neil Young had an illegitimate son with Steve Malkmus conceived while George Clinton and Paul Westerberg pleasured each other in the closet? Andy Montelone, the creative force behind the band discusses love songs, taking art seriously andhow to write and record a song in ONE HOUR???
