A steel town becomes a stage, a chorus becomes a dare, and a new record asks what we'll do when the comfort runs out. We sit down with XBYRDX (aka Bird), a southern Indiana singer‑songwriter, to trace six formative tracks—Springsteen's Youngstown, The Jesus and Mary Chain's Just Like Honey, The Clash's White Riot, The Replacements' Unsatisfied, The Cure's Plainsong, and Hüsker Dü's Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely—and hear how noise, melody, and place turned him toward cinematic songwriting. Then we dive into Anthems for the End Times, where XBYRDX threads big themes through tight hooks. “Ayn Rand's On Welfare” challenges a polished indifference that calls itself self‑reliance and reminds us that posting isn't voting. “MAGA Girl” wears a pop sheen while charting a romance split by worldview. “Shrine” confronts flags and monuments, arguing for context over erasure and the courage to tell full history. “Prize Fighter” is the bell‑ring: get off the ropes, organize, and claim agency. The title track sounds apocalyptic but hides a stubborn optimism—no savior is coming, so we move now, together. “White Noise” closes on our algorithmic silos, urging listeners to step past the echo and find signal.Across the conversation, XBYRDX talks craft—layered synths, texture over solos, melodies that carry weight—and the artists who taught him to let songs feel like weather. If you're drawn to protest music with heart, indie rock with teeth, and storytelling that sees people before positions, this one's for you. Stream 'Anthems for the End Times' on Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you get your invisible music, and let us know which track hit you first. At what point are you “allowed” to call yourself a singer-songwriter? Is it after you finish your first song? Release music publicly? Perform for other people? Many artists carry a quiet belief that they're not a real singer-songwriter yet — that they need to be better, more confident, or further along before claiming that identity. In this episode, we explore the journey of becoming an artist and the internal shift that happens when you start taking your creative voice seriously. We talk about: • Why so many artists hesitate to call themselves singer-songwriters • The invisible rules that keep people waiting for permission • How identity grows alongside practice, not after perfection • The role of curiosity, exploration, and consistency in the creative journey If you've been writing songs, exploring your voice, and wondering when you're “allowed” to claim the title of singer-songwriter, this episode is for you. Becoming an artist isn't a single moment — it's a practice.

You start songs all the time. But finishing them? That's where things fall apart. If your voice memos are full of half-written lyrics and abandoned ideas, you're not lazy — and you're not untalented. In this episode, we explore three common reasons singer-songwriters struggle to finish their songs: perfectionism, lack of creative systems, and hitting a skill edge. Because sometimes the problem isn't motivation. It's protection. It's disorganization. It's growth. If you're ready to move from scattered ideas to steady creative momentum, this conversation will meet you exactly where you are.

A legend to the legends! Jeff Barry was named one of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and is inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. "Tell Laura I Love Her." "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Then He Kissed Me," "Be My Baby," "(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home," "Chapel of Love," "River Deep - Mountain High," "Doo Wah Diddy," "Leader of the Pack," "Hanky Panky," "Sugar, Sugar," "I Honestly Love You." It's mind boggling! PART ONE Paul and Scott chat about crossing a new friendship milestone and the long road to getting to speak with the unbelievably cool Jeff Barry. PART TWO Our in-depth interview with Jeff BarryABOUT JEFF BARRY Jeff Barry began his career as a recording artist for RCA and Decca Records, but attracted more attention for his original songs. After scoring pop hits with “Tell Laura I Love Her” and Sam Cooke's recording of “Teenage Sonata” in 1960, Jeff joined forces with Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector to pen such classics as “Da Doo Ron Ron,” “Then He Kissed Me,” “Be My Baby,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” “Chapel of Love,” and “River Deep – Mountain High.” Greenwich and Barry also recorded together as the Raindrops while continuing to find success with other artists, including landing number one hits with “Doo Wah Diddy Diddy,” “Leader of the Pack,” and the Tommy James and the Shondells recording of “Hanky Panky.” Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Rock Songs” included six Barry-Greenwich compositions, more than any other non-performing songwriting team. As a producer, Barry helmed such hits as “Cherry, Cherry” by Neil Diamond and “I'm a Believer” by The Monkees. After parting ways with Greenwich, Jeff began writing with Andy Kim, with whom he had the biggest hit of 1969 when he co-wrote and produced “Sugar, Sugar” by the fictional cartoon band The Archies. A few years later, Jeff was nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy for Olivia Newton John's 1974 chart-topping recording of “I Honestly Love You.” Additionally, he found success on the country charts in the 1970s and ‘80s with top 5 singles such as “Out of Hand,” recorded by Gary Stewart” and “Lie to You For Your Love,” recorded by the Bellamy Brothers. Never bound by genre categories, he also enjoyed top 5 R&B successes in those decades with songs such as “Heavy Makes You Happy” for the Staple Singers and “The Last Time I Made Love,” a song he wrote with Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil that was recorded by Joyce Kennedy and Jeffrey Osborne. In addition to writing more than 50 different songs that have reached the top 40 on the Billboard charts, Jeff penned the theme songs for TV shows such as One Day at a Time (“This Is It”), The Jeffersons (“Movin' on Up”), and Family Ties (“Without Us”). In 2019 he and writing partner Clarence Jey composed and wrote songs for the animated Nickelodeon show Lego City Adventures. Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are in the top 20 of Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Jeff has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Songwriters and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. "A wonderful guitar player and great songwriter " - Steve Miller "Curry is the next guitar hero" - Peter Frampton Acclaimed singer-songwriter Matthew Curry returns with his new album ONE FOR THE RIDE, a dynamic and heartfelt collection that showcases the full range of his musicianship -- from fiery, virtuostic guitar work to intimate, emotionally rich songwriting. The album explores life on the road, love celebration, personal reflection, and Americana storytelling, all delivered with Curry's signature depth and gritty authenticity. Born and raised in Bloomington, Illinois, Curry picked up the guitar at age four, was performing live by eight, and leading his own band by eleven. Curry's distinctive blend of blues, rock, southern rock, and old-school country has earned him a devoted audience across the globe. Over the years, Matthew has toured with major icons including the Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, Peter Frampton, Journey, Don Felder, with Steve Miller praising Curry as "a wonderful guitar player and great songwriter in the league of Stevie Ray Vaughan." One For The Ride captures Curry's life on the road, his love for storytelling, and the musical influences that shaped him. The album bursts open with high-energy southern rock flair, drawing inspiration from the raw spirit of bands like ZZ Top and the timeless road-song tradition.Tracks like "Rum Stumblin'" showcase Curry's knack for crafting fun, bluesy, party-driven grooves, while "Born Behind The Wheel" leans into gritty riffs and harmonies rooted in the southern rock Curry grew up listening to.For more on Matthew Curry check at the website:https://matthewcurry.com

From Trauma to Triumph: Kevin Steele Opens Up to Tom Alvarez, On the Aisle. Rock frontman Kevin Steele joins Tom Alvarez on the latest episode of his podcast for a conversation that goes far beyond music. Calling in from St. Petersburg, Florida, Steele discusses his first-ever solo album, One Thing Left to Do, set for release February 27. But what unfolds is more than an album preview — it's a story of survival, resilience, and rediscovered purpose. After decades leading Rocks Gang and The Mojo Gurus, Steele is stepping out on his own for the first time. He describes this project as the record he's always wanted to make. Co-produced with guitarist Billy Summer — whom Steele calls his “Cosmic Twin” — the album reflects his unfiltered creative voice. There were no label executives weighing in. No producer clashes. No compromises. The result is a raw blend of rock and roll infused with blues, glam, country, grit, and heart — a sound Steele says represents exactly who he is today. The conversation takes a deeply personal turn as Steele opens up about a life marked by unimaginable trauma. He reveals that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and suffered a brain bleed before undergoing surgery. Against daunting odds, he made a full recovery and returned to the studio with renewed clarity and determination. But his story of survival began long before that diagnosis. At just eight years old, Steele's mother was murdered. Years later, his father was convicted of orchestrating the crime. Growing up in the shadow of that tragedy shaped him in profound ways. Music, he says, became both refuge and lifeline.“I wanted to give some other kid the same escape music gave me,” Steele shares during one of the episode's most powerful moments.Throughout the podcast, Steele and Alvarez also dive into several tracks from One Thing Left to Do, exploring the stories and emotions behind the songs. Each track reflects a journey — from pain to perseverance, from trauma to triumph. What emerges is not just the story of a new album, but the portrait of an artist who has endured heartbreak, health scares, and hardship — and chosen to channel it all into creativity. One Thing Left to Do isn't simply a solo debut. It's a declaration: after everything he's survived, Kevin Steele still has music to make — and a story worth telling.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Banned In Sparta”- Collaborative Album with Classical Greek Poets and Modern Folk Singers Helmed by Robin BatteauRobin Batteau's “Banned in Sparta” is a collaborative album of songs based on poems by Classical Greek poets and recorded by a number of friends Tom Paxton, Eric Andersen, Livingston and Kate Taylor, Matt Nakoa, Robin Lane, 2-time Tony winning actor James Naughton and his gifted children Keira and Greg, plus Carolyn Hester. Robin was inspired by an Ancient Greek History class he took when he returned to Harvard during the Pandemic to finish a degree he started in the 1960s. Robin earned the World Record of taking a 50-year break (between 1970 to 2021) to return to Harvard and finish his degree in 2022. “Banned In Sparta” focuses almost entirely on poets from Ancient Greece between 700 and 400 BC. One poet, Gaius Valerius Catullus (84 – 54 BC), as smitten with the ghost of Sappho as Robin or Alcaeus, is from Rome during Julius Caesar's reign, for whom Eric Andersen performs “Cross (of Gold),” an ode to interlaced and conflicted feelings, “Odi et Amo"— I hate and I love. The title “Banned in Sparta” finds its name from Archilochus, the Bob Dylan of the 7th century B.C., a warrior-poet so irreverent he was “Banned in Sparta.” James Naughton sings the song “Archilochus Re-Deemed (I Am a Servant of the Lord God of War).” Kate Taylor performs “Telesilla's On the Wall,” from the female poet Telesilla, who led her fellow women warriors to victory against those same renowned Spartans. “The Greek Lyric poets performed live, and were the stars of their day,” says Robin. “They were singer/songwriters, they played the lyre (hence "Lyric") and danced around the stage like Tom Paxton and Taylor Swift.”Robin, who studied Ancient Greece and Integrative Biology at Harvard, found that most of what was left of the poems were fragments and myth, “So I mosaic-ed songs to reflect their expressions and intentions— who they were, and are to me.” A range of female poets contributed to the lyrical history of Greece including Corrina, whose “In Her Loving Arms” is sung by Carolyn Hester, and Praxilla's “The Most Beautiful Thing in the World,” a hymn to Adonis, sung by Keira Naughton. Sappho's writing inspires “Terra Cotta Heart,” sung by Robin Lane. Livingston Taylor sings “My Sappho, Sweetly Smiling” from the smitten neighbor and rival Alcaeus. The fun and frolicking “Shake your Hair (You Thracian Filly),” sung by Tom Paxton. Pianist and folk singer Matt Nakoa offers a Bruce Hornsby-like treatment for Simonides of Ceos's “Theatre of Memory (Man of Gold).” Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Harper Grace is forever her father's daughter on “if daddy says no.” The Texas native finds herself caught between two men who hold her heart: the one who raised her and the one who pursued her. Contemplating the consequences of choosing one over the other, while acknowledging their similarities, she pleads for patience as she seeks her father's blessing on a coming-of-age track rooted in real-life vulnerability, not storybook endings. “if daddy says no” was written by Harper Grace, Kyle Schlienger, and Scott Stepakoff; and produced by Cooper Bascom."'if daddy says no' was written during a season where I thought I could run away and fall in love on my own terms. I believed love meant choosing freely, without looking back - but internally, I felt a deep push and pull. I was raised in a family where tradition matters, where respect matters, and where my relationship with my father has always been rooted in love, protection, and trust. His "yes" has always meant something to me. This song lives in the tension between wanting to make the right decision for yourself and not tearing down everything else around you in the process. It's about choosing long-term values over short-term emotion, and realizing that love isn't just about who you fall for - it's about who you become and what you're willing to protect."Harper Grace's burgeoning career has already seen her perform twice on national television on NBC'S Today Show, collect 17 million global streams, and co-write a song she recorded that landed a sync placement in a Netflix film in 2025 ("Getaway"). She has opened for many incredible artists, including OneRepublic, Dylan Scott, Maddie & Tae, Nelly, and Walker Hayes. She has performed at NFL, MLB, NBA, and MLS games. She has been featured by NPR, Taste of Country, and US Weekly. And she has released songs with Kelsey Hart, Mason Ramsey, and Franklin Jonas. Harper's songwriting abilities, vocal prowess, and engaging personality have and continue to propel her rise. “if daddy says no" is currently at Country radioBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Alexa Ray JoelABOUT ALEXA RAY JOELSinger, songwriter, and pianist Alexa Ray Joel released her debut EP Sketches in 2006 and has since released a series of singles, including the most recent, “Heavy Eyes.” The daughter of legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel and supermodel and actress Christie Brinkley, Alexa Ray began writing songs as a teenager. Her performances at Café Carlyle have showcased her eclectic repertoire, including original songs, Broadway numbers, and nods to her father and Ray Charles, for whom she was named. The New York Times praised her as a “singer confidently following her heart.” She has been a part of The Gap's “Back to Blue” television ad campaign, and has ventured into the fashion world, appearing on magazine covers and participating in fashion weeks. She sang alongside her father in the final year of his Madison Square Garden residency in 2024 and says her favorite Billy Joel song is “Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel),” which he wrote for her. Musicians and songwriters are storytellers. And Jackson has been writing songs since he was about 12 years old. His debut single, "I Love you Mom" is a belated birthday gift to his mom. He wasn't going to record it in his next studio session but his coworkers insisted, and here we are.Over the years and decades of working in the radio industry, I've interviewed hundreds of musicians. Jackson is up there at the top of the list as far as being polite, honest, humble and open about his strengths and weaknesses. I imagine a lot of that comes from his childhood and the fact that his family played a huge role in his life. Family is very important to my guest, not only because they keep you grounded, but he realized at a young age exactly how fortunate he truly was to have a mom , dad and brother that truly supported each other. He was taught to show respect and appreciation for all that he has and he really is all that! Jackson talks about "his solid foundation" and how it helps him stayed focused.'Norman's Rare Guitars' in Los Angeles, CA recorded a few videos with Jackson featured playing the guitar with special guest musicians. You should check these videos out on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf89aB_bWXY "Prove You Right"Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL2SRhQf1tI "Different Kind Of Beautiful" with special guest Tim Pierce on guitarHe's known for being at the right place at the right time but Jackson works hard at his craft because he's so passionate about his music. Jackson has a great story to share about one of his early performances at the legendary Puckett's in Leipers Fort, TN. For such a young performer, he got some crazy memorable stories to share about all the celebrated artists he's come into contact with.I wish you all the best Jackson!
