Hustler is one of those unique words where the context matters. We like people who are willing to work hard, sacrifice for a better life. Those are good hustlers. But there are the bad ones who give hustling a bad name. They are not admirable, and look for anything other than grinding to rise. You might know a street hustler; the street-corner, three-card monte, watch-the-pea-under-the-shell kind. The hustle that isn't about building something, but who is about getting over. That kind of hustling is what you do when you know, deep in your gut you don't have skills. And if you have achieved without skills, you know that you don't actually deserve what you have, and you're one wrong move away from everyone else figuring it out.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Notes: Key Learnings The Mad Scientist Emotional Profile – High achievers typically have both high positive and high negative affect. "Hustlers, hard workers, strivers, entrepreneurs, ambitious people, they're in that quadrant of high positive, high negative affect." This creates intensity but requires management of negative emotions. Dangerous Negative Affect Management – People try to manage high negative affect through alcohol, excessive internet use/pornography, and workaholism. "The isms, the addictions, they're almost all negative affect management techniques." Two Best Ways to Manage Negative Affect: Faith, Spirituality, Philosophy - "Every day, go deep" into transcendent practices Physical Exercise - "Go pick up heavy things" - resistance training moderates negative emotions Arthur's 4:30 AM Protocol – Wakes at 4:30, works out 4:45-5:45, attends mass 6:30-7:00, then has high-protein breakfast with dark coffee at 7:45 for 4 hours of peak creative focus. "I get four hours of creative concentration with maximum dopamine." Exercise Reduces Unhappiness, Doesn't Create Happiness – "Working out hard... moderates negative affect. It makes you less unhappy" rather than directly increasing positive emotions. The Failure Journal Method – Write down failures/disappointments, return after 3 weeks to note learnings, return after 2 more months to identify good things that resulted. This installs learning in the prefrontal cortex rather than letting it "float around limbically." Early Success Can Be Dangerous – Scholars rejected for early research grants outperformed those with early success. "Much better is when you do the work and build yourself up... be a wholesaler before you become a retailer." Management Doesn't Provide Flow – "There's one kind of job where you don't get flow, and that's management... you're getting jerked from thing to thing to thing." Being CEO was "satisfying, but not enjoyable." Intelligence Must Serve Others – "Intelligence is just another gift... whether or not it makes you happier depends on whether or not you're using it to make other people happier." Denigrating others for lower intelligence indicates misusing your gift. The Arrival Fallacy – Olympic gold medalists often experience depression after winning because positive emotion comes from progress toward goals, not achieving them. "Your positive emotion doesn't exist to give you a permanent good day." Two Midlife Crisis Solutions: Focus on what age gives you rather than takes away Choose subtraction over addition - appreciate what you no longer have to do Making Changes Stick Requires Three Elements: Understand the science - Know why something works Change your habits - Actually implement different behaviors Teach it - Explain it to others to cement learning in the prefrontal cortex The Happiness Formula – "Use things, love people, worship the divine" instead of the natural impulses to "love things, use people, and worship yourself." Multi-generational Living Benefits – Arthur lives with adult children and grandchildren: "The research is clear that the closer you are to your grandchildren... the better it is for everybody." Quotes: "I get four hours of creative concentration with maximum dopamine in my prefrontal cortex... ordinarily I would get an hour and a half, two hours of real clarity." "The isms, the addictions, they're almost all negative affect management techniques." "Working out hard... makes you less unhappy. The research is very clear." "Being the boss isn't that fun. It just isn't." "I have carefully accounted for all of my days of happiness. They add up to 14." (Emir of Cordoba) "What's first prize in a pie eating contest? The answer is pie. So I hope you like pie." "Beware the corner office boys. Beware the corner office." "Use things, love people, worship the divine." "Watch one, do one, teach one." (Harvard Medical School) "Don't trust your impulses. Your impulses are to love things, use people, and worship yourself." Life Lessons Develop Daily Discipline Early - A Consistent morning routine with exercise and spiritual practice creates optimal brain chemistry for peak performance throughout the day. Manage High Achievement Personality - If you're a driven person, recognize you likely have high negative affect that needs healthy management through exercise and transcendent practices. Reframe Career Setbacks - Early failures often build stronger foundations than early successes. Use disappointments as learning opportunities through systematic reflection. Question Management Ambitions - Consider whether you enjoy management or just want the status/money. Management roles inherently provide less flow and enjoyment. Use Intelligence to Serve Others - Your cognitive gifts should lift others up, not put them down. Intelligence without service leads to unhappiness. Focus on Progress, Not Arrival - Derive satisfaction from forward momentum in meaningful work rather than achieving specific goals that won't provide lasting happiness. Embrace What Age Gives - In life transitions, focus on new capabilities and freedoms rather than what you're losing or leaving behind. Teach What You Learn - The most effective way to cement new habits and insights is to explain them to others. Teaching accelerates your own learning. Choose Subtraction - Happiness often comes from eliminating negative elements (bad meetings, toxic relationships) rather than adding more positive ones. Build Multi-Generational Relationships - Prioritize time with family across generations. The research strongly supports benefits for all parties. Exercise for Mental Health - View physical training as medication for negative emotions rather than just physical fitness. Cultivate Transcendent Practices - Whether religious, philosophical, or spiritual, daily engagement with something larger than yourself moderates negative emotions and provides meaning. Time Stamps: 00:10 Arthur's Fitness and Health Routine 02:01 Link Between Fitness and Happiness 04:03 Managing Negative Emotions 06:23 Morning Routines 13:24 The Importance of Failure 22:26 The Reality of Promotions and Leadership 27:56 The Power of Intelligence: A Double-Edged Sword 28:28 Using Gifts to Spread Happiness 29:20 The Impact of Helping Others 33:28 Avoiding the Arrival Fallacy 36:36 Redefining Retirement and Midlife 47:39 The Importance of Teaching and Learning 51:28 Life Advice 53:01 EOPC (End of the Podcast Club)

"Some people hustle pool, some people hustle cars, but have you ever heard of the man who hustles stars?" From 1976 to 1997, these lines began every episode of Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler, the astronomy show from WPBT, South Florida PBS. Later on Star Hustler was rebranded to Star Gazers, and hosts Dean Regas and James Albury took over after Horkheimer's passing. In this episode of Looking Up, Dean and James reminisce on production of the show, plus, "buzzkill" astronomy is back!

Ready to break free from burnout and self-sabotage?Join The Capacity Gap Workshop, register FREE at https://rewirecapacity.com The flight response is often misunderstood as weakness or avoidance, but it's actually a deeply wired survival strategy shaped by fear and trauma. In this episode of Trauma Rewired, we uncover how the nervous system uses constant motion, through overwork, hustle, and productivity, to escape from internal sensations and emotions that once felt unsafe. You'll learn how fear disguises itself as discipline, why rest feels threatening to high performers, and how chronic busyness creates a false sense of safety while eroding health and connection. From neuroscience to personal stories, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof explain the mechanisms of the flight response, its roots in trauma, and the protective role it sometimes plays. Most importantly, we share practical somatic tools to slow down, regulate the nervous system, and reclaim fear as a signal for presence and alignment, not something to outrun. 00:00 – Running from internal sensations, not others 00:24 – Busyness and productivity as avoidance 00:43 – Slowing down in somatic therapy 01:33 – Hustler identity and chronic overdoing 02:25 – Flight tied to fear of stillness 03:11 – Welcome to Trauma Rewired 04:15 – Flight patterns: urgency, overscheduling, avoidance 05:13 – When flight signals misalignment 07:46 – Flight as protection against overstimulation 09:31 – Brain-body mechanics of flight 11:50 – Fear bypassed as weakness 13:10 – Trauma and structural reinforcement of flight 15:36 – Movement replacing emotion 17:35 – Somatic healing requires slowing down 18:32 – Signs of inward-directed flight 19:55 – Disconnection from body cues (hunger, fatigue) 23:39 – Somatic regulation steps and tools 25:53 – Fear as primal protective signal 28:12 – Regulation tools to create space between sensation and action 31:24 – Stillness and vulnerability as safety 32:16 – Somatic release of fear: frozen shoulder story 33:28 – Reclaiming emotions as growth tools 34:36 – Fear, intuition, and aligned action Topics Discussed in This Episode: The difference between healthy fear and chronic flight How trauma conditions the nervous system to stay in motion The neuroscience of the flight response: amygdala, hypothalamus, PAG, prefrontal cortex Why productivity and hustle are often survival strategies Signs of chronic flight in relationships and work The hidden cost of avoiding emotions through busyness Somatic tools for slowing down and processing fear Rewiring chronic flight through neuroplasticity and body-based healing The role of cultural and systemic trauma in reinforcing flight How to reclaim fear as a clarifying signal for safety and presence
Mark McBrine grew up on a farm and expected that to be his lifelong calling, but God had another plan. When his father became ill and his family needed help running the farms, Mark, at the age of 49, became a Correctional Officer with the Maine Department of Corrections. From there, it didn't take long for Mark to become the Food Service Manager at the Mountain View Correctional Facility. When then Warden, Randy Liberty, was interested in reducing the waste inside the prison kitchens, Mark stepped up and created an Organic Fruit and Vegetable Production Program. This Farm to Table program within the Maine Department of Corrections forever changed how food can be grown, harvested, and consumed behind the wall! Mark's inspiring work in enhancing food quality and providing vocational training to incarcerated individuals across eight state prisons and is now a model for other prisons and jails across the United States. Mark and his team have helped many incarcerated individuals gain skills and knowledge in gardening, harvesting, cooking, and even baking 100% of the prison's own breads and desserts. The discovery of how innovative agricultural practices and a commitment to scratch cooking continue to change lives and foster responsibility. Much of this can be seen in the documentary Seeds of Change, Breaking Free from the Prison Food Machine. Don't miss this enlightening discussion that challenges perceptions and highlights the power of compassion and second chances, through food.

Whether you're a sports fan or a parent in the stands, there is a distinct difference between the role of the Coach and the role of the Referees. Nowhere is it more apparent than watching the 2025 NFL pre-season games to get a true perspective on the differences. In this, part 2 of the conversation with Dr. Brian Lovins, President of Justice System Partners, Brian shares more about the transformative coaching model he and his other collaborators created back in 2018, how that initial model is now focused on four dimensions of coaching; the Approach, the Connection, the Playbook and the Success, and the importance of accountability, and the real life implications of this innovative model that is evolving and reshaping the experiences of those it was designed for.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week we're heading back to the early 2000s with Paid in Full (2002), a gritty street-level crime drama from director Charles Stone III, which dives deep into the Harlem drug scene of the 1980s. The film stars Wood Harris, Mekhi Phifer, and rapper Cam'ron in a fictionalised take on the lives of real-life hustlers Azie Faison, Rich Porter, and Alpo Martinez.Wood Harris plays Ace, a quiet, hardworking laundromat employee who tries to avoid the street life. That is, until he stumbles upon a stash of drugs in a customer's laundry and finds himself slowly drawn into the world of dealing. His best friend Mitch (Mekhi Phifer), already a big name in the game, welcomes him into the fold, and together with the unpredictable Rico (Cam'ron), the trio builds a lucrative operation that soon brings wealth, respect… and serious danger. What begins as a tale of brotherhood and ambition quickly spirals into a cautionary tale of greed, betrayal, and the brutal realities of life on the street. Ace rises through the ranks with a calm, business-like approach to dealing, but as Mitch faces personal tragedy and Rico's recklessness increases, their empire begins to crack from within. It's a familiar arc in the world of crime dramas, but Paid in Full plays it with enough emotional sincerity and cultural specificity to leave a lasting impression. This one's not for the kids – it's a tough, streetwise film with moments of graphic violence and drug use. But for adult viewers, particularly fans of urban dramas or those who grew up during the golden age of hip-hop, Paid in Full offers a layered and sobering perspective on the rise-and-fall crime narrative.Whether you're revisiting it or watching it for the first time, Paid in Full still resonates. It's a stark reminder that behind the glamour of the drug game lies tragedy, and that the streets don't let go easily.
