On July 4, 1984, police dogs uncovered a shallow grave in the quiet town of Northport, Long Island. Inside lay the mutilated body of 17-year-old Gary Lauwers—stabbed more than 30 times in a drug-fueled frenzy by his friend Ricky “The Acid King” Kasso. Within days, the story became national news, sparking headlines of Satanic sacrifice and cementing Kasso as the terrifying face of America's 1980s Satanic Panic. But was this really the work of a Satanic cult, or simply the grim fallout of teenage drug abuse, mental illness, and neglect? In this episode of Terrifying & True, we dive deep into the disturbing murder in Aztakea Woods, Ricky Kasso's descent into drugs and occult posturing, and how the media turned one horrific killing into a nationwide moral hysteria. We'll examine:The brutal murder of Gary Lauwers and Kasso's infamous demand, “Say You Love Satan.”How the case fueled the fire of the Satanic Panic sweeping America. The media's sensational claims versus the grim reality of drugs, rage, and tragedy. The trial of Jimmy Troiano and the lasting legacy of the “Acid King” myth. From grave robbing to cult rumors, from teenage rebellion to national paranoia, this is the chilling true story of Ricky Kasso, the Acid King of Northport. We're telling that story tonight.

This is the first solo release by drummer and producer Jason Ganberg of the duo, Deep Dark Blue. Recorded and produced in Yucca Valley and Los Angeles California between 2022-2024. After a lot of transition and change I wanted to write and create some music that encapsulated and wrapped up a certain time in my life. Some of these tracks started with me recording grooves in my practice space on my phone, and some from field recordings taken from trips in Mexico and Colombia. I didn't want to set myself any boundaries stylistically so I let myself write in a free flowing way without judgement, tinkering with synth lines, bass parts, samples and grooves until things clicked for me. These are a collection of my favorite pieces during this process and I hope you enjoy this little journey as much as I did making it. - Jason Ganberg Written and produced by Jason Ganberg Mastered by Matt Parent

Summer, 1984—at the height of the Satanic Panic. Ricky is a motor-mouthed teen who wants proof the Devil is listening. In a moonlit patch of woods, a dare turns into a ritual and a killing. What follows is darker: Ricky props the body in a lawn chair with sunglasses, invites classmates to look, and turns terror into spectacle—boombox hissing, insects buzzing, and bravado curdling into dread as word spreads and the cops close in.This isn't a true-crime retelling; it's a brutal horror story steeped in Acid King folklore—teen cult swagger, drugs, and a swaggering kid convinced he's owed infernal fame. The consequences arrive in handcuffs and, at the end, a quiet, awful moment alone in a jail cell. Listener discretion advised for graphic violence, drug use, and suicide. What Ricky Did on his Summer Vacation by Dan Wilder

Foreigner was part of the official selection at this years Fantasia Festival in Montreal. It was written and directed by Ava Maria Safai and we sat down together over zoom and discussed her film. Foreigner - In the age of low-rise jeans and flip phones, a Persian teen trying to fit in with her new Canadian clique dyes her hair blonde -- and invites a monstrous force into her life.I will be sure to keep everyone posted for its release sometime next year, but until then, enjoy this great episode. Ava was a lot of fun to talk to and we discuss tv and other films as well.Persian Julep – Apricot Rose JulepIngredients1/2 oz honey rose simple syrup**6 large mint leaves2 dashes rose water optional1.5 oz bourbon1/2 oz Giffard's apricot liqueurGarnish: sprig of mint, dried apricots, fresh, organic, food-safe rose petalsInstructionsAdd the simple syrup and rose water to the bottom of a mixing glass. Tear the mint leaves in half and drop them into the syrup. Muddle lightly.Add the apricot liqueur and bourbon. Fill with ice and stir until chilled and well-combined, about 30 seconds.Strain into a julep cup filled with cracked or crushed ice and garnish with a fresh mint sprig and some dried apricots. For the Rose-Honey Simple:Ingredients2 tablespoons dried rose buds1 cup water3/4 cup honeyDirectionsBrew the rose buds in boiling water for 8 minutes like you would a tea (I used my teapot).Strain 1/2 cup of the tea into a glass measuring cup. While still hot, add 3/4 cup honey and stir well to combine.Let cool completely and keep in the fridge. It will keep for a couple of weeks, and a little longer if you add a bit of vodka to it before storing it. You can drink the remaining tea on its own, or make some of it into a rose simple syrup by adding 1/2 cup sugar to it.Persian DelightIngredients60 ml Tanqueray Malacca Gin40 ml Salted Pistachio and Cardamom Orgeat*30 ml Acid-adjusted Orange Juice**10-15 drops Persian Saffron and Persian Rose tincture***2 dashes Angostura orange bitterDirectionsMix all the ingredients (except for the Saffron and Persian Rose Tincture) together and add them to 50 ml 2% milk, let it sit for 24 hours and filter it using cheese cloth. Rosemary Woodruff Leary, a St. Louis native, was best known during her life as the wife of Harvard psychologist and LSD evangelist Timothy Leary. But a new book highlights Rosemary's unsung role in that movement. Author Susannah Cahalan's “The Acid Queen: The Psychedelic Life and Counterculture Rebellion of Rosemary Woodruff Leary," uses diaries and Rosemary's own writing to explore how she guided the public persona and mythmaking of Timothy Leary — including how Rosemary helped him escape prison to become international fugitives. Cahalan argues that Rosemary was so much more than a side character, but “a pioneer whose unacknowledged sacrifice helped safeguard an underground movement.”

In this encore episode, we highlight the stomach's role in vitamin B12 absorption and bioavailability, detailing the cellular composition of the gastric mucosa and further highlighting mucous cells, parietal cells, and chief cells. We also briefly discuss Helicobacter pylori and common symptoms, while detailing H. pylori's potential impacts on the gastric mucosal barrier. Topics:1. Introduction- Overview of the stomach's role in B12 absorption- Helicobacter pylori  2. H. pylori Overview- Gram-negative bacterium, can colonize the stomach lining- Many individuals remain asymptomatic- Symptoms - Can contribute to gastritis and peptic ulcers- Produces urease, hydrolyzes urea into ammonia (NH₃) andcarbon dioxide (CO₂)- Ammonia neutralizes stomach acid locally, protective microenvironment- H. pylori damages the mucosal barrier and contributes to persistence- Possesses additional virulence factors 3. Gastric Anatomy  -  Stomach is divided into the cardia, fundus, body, and pylorus- The gastric mucosa - The epithelial lining; mucous cells, parietal cells, chief cells, and more 4. Mucous Cells and Mucosal Protection  - Line the gastric pits and secrete thick, viscous mucus- Mucus composed of water, mucin glycoproteins, and other low-molecular-weight molecules- Traps bicarbonate ions (HCO₃⁻)- Shields the stomach lining 5. Parietal Cells  - Located in the gastric glands, predominantly in the fundus and body- Secrete hydrochloric acid (HCl)- Secrete intrinsic factor (IF) 6. Vitamin B12 Overview - Cobalamin: DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, neurological function, methylation, and more- Methylcobalamin and 5-deoxyadenosylcobalamin- Non-active forms include hydroxocobalamin and synthetic cyanocobalamin   7. Vitamin B12 Absorption Pathway  - B12 is released from proteins by HCl and pepsin- Binds first to haptocorrin- In the small intestine, pancreatic enzymes degrade haptocorrin- B12 binds intrinsic factor - Absorption in the ileum - Impairment  8. Chief Cells  - Located in the gastric glands- Secrete pepsinogen, activated by acid into pepsin- Also secrete gastric lipase 9. Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) - Secreted by parietal cells- Denatures dietary proteins and activates pepsinogen- Acts as a defense mechanism by aiding in sterilizing ingested food 10. Relevance of H. pylori - Produces urease that breaks down urea into NH₃ and CO₂- Ammonia neutralizes acid locally, forming a protective “bubble”- Enhances mucosal damage and microbial persistence 11. B12 Absorption  - Multiple factors and root causes can impair absorption- H. pylori 12. Hypochlorhydria  - Symptoms- Absorption: vitamin B12, iron, calcium, magnesium, more- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)  13. Will psychedelics revolutionize mental health treatment? | Matthew Johnson, Shayla Love, and Kevin Sabet

The psychedelic revolutionWill LSD, Psilocybin, MDMA, and Ketamine treatments live up to the hype? For decades, psychedelics were derided as dangerous recreational drugs; now many claim they have the potential to revolutionise the treatment of mental health. With hundreds of clinical trials now taking place, the psychedelic therapeutic market is predicted to be over ten billion within the decade. It has been widely thought that psychedelics are effective at treating mental health because of the way they change brain chemistry. But studies from King's College London and Johns Hopkins suggest this is an error, arguing that it's the psychedelic experience that aids mental wellbeing, not the physical brain changes.Should we stop focussing on brain chemistry as the solution to mental health? What is it about psychedelic experience that can aid mental well being and will psychedelics live up to their promise and usher in a mental health renaissance? Or is the hype bubble about to burst and should we look elsewhere for the silver bullet to the mental health crisis of our age?Matthew Johnson is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. Shayla Love is a freelance reporter and former senior science writer at Vice News, focusing on psychedelics. Kevin Sabet is the founder of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, and he has been described as the "quarterback of the new anti-drug movement".Don't hesitate to email us at podcast@iai.tv with your thoughts or questions on the episode! To witness such debates live buy tickets for our upcoming festival: https://howthelightgetsin.org/festivals/And visit our website for many more articles, videos, and podcasts like this one: https://iai.tv/You can find everything we referenced here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We are changing our show tonight, but we still have you covered with wine information.Tonight we are going to taste and learn about Gamay.Gamay is known for being a light-body and fruit-forward wine with low tannins. It typically has cherry and raspberry fruit flavors, and earthy and floral notes. Acid is typically medium to high.Duke of Burgundy banned Gamay in 1395 because he believed it to be an inferior wine, but it remained and continued to be grown in the southern Burgundy region of Beaujolais. This is the most famous region producing Gamay, and now is responsible for about 75% of all of the Gamay wine in the world. Our wine tonight comes from the Loire Valley where is it also grown in the central regions of the Loire. It is also being grown in parts of Canada, Oregon, and New Zealand. Gamay pairs well with soft cheeses, chicken, turkey, salmon, and mushroom dishes. Serve slightly chilled at 55-60 degrees. Here are our three wines for tonight.Tonight, we are enjoying:2021 Le Rouge E'Ici et E'Ailleurs Saint Pourcain, Loire Valley. I purchased online and you can still find it for $18.00. It is produced by Domaine des Berioles. The winery is biodynamic and it is made with 100% Gamay grapes. It has 12.5% alcohol. This wine was average, I liked it but nothing I would go out an purchase again. We both rated it a 3. I did like the earthiness, but had an overpowering cherry taste. Next week, we are testing ourselves and the wine industry. Does price equal quality? We are going to taste three very different-priced Pinot Noirs and see if price equals enjoyment.

Från tumlande, melankolisk och samtidigt euforisk pianodriven house (”Move your body”) via acidhouse (”I've lost control”, ”Acid tracks”) till upplyftande deephouse (”Someday”, ”We are unity”). Real Life Pharmacology - Pharmacology Education for Health Care Professionals

Vilazodone (brand name Viibryd) is an antidepressant with a unique pharmacologic profile compared to most other agents in the SSRI class. While not a first-line choice for every patient, understanding its mechanism, adverse effects, and interaction profile is essential for optimizing therapy and preventing downstream prescribing problems. Mechanism of ActionVilazodone is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and a partial agonist at the 5-HT1A receptor. The SSRI activity increases synaptic serotonin by blocking the serotonin transporter, while partial agonism at 5-HT1A receptors may contribute to antidepressant effects and potentially reduce certain SSRI-associated adverse effects (though clinical evidence for this benefit is mixed). Adverse Effects GI effects – diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting are frequent early in therapy. Taking the medication with food can help minimize these. Insomnia – often dose-related; morning dosing may help. Sexual dysfunction – may be slightly lower than with some SSRIs but still present. Serotonin syndrome – rare but serious, particularly if combined with other serotonergic drugs. Discontinuation syndrome – abrupt cessation can lead to dizziness, irritability, and flu-like symptoms. Drug InteractionsVilazodone is primarily metabolized by CYP3A4. This means: CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir) can increase vilazodone concentrations, potentially worsening side effects—dose reductions may be required. CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., carbamazepine, rifampin, St. John's Wort) can lower drug levels, reducing effectiveness. Other serotonergic agents (e.g., triptans, SNRIs, MAOIs, tramadol, linezolid) increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Antiplatelets and anticoagulants – SSRIs can impair platelet aggregation, increasing bleeding risk when combined with aspirin, NSAIDs, or warfarin. Prescribing Cascade ExamplesVilazodone's adverse effects can easily lead to unnecessary prescriptions if side effects aren't recognized: GI upset → Acid suppression therapy – Diarrhea or nausea prompts the addition of proton pump inhibitors or antiemetics, instead of adjusting vilazodone dose or timing. Insomnia → Hypnotic initiation – Trouble sleeping results in adding zolpidem or trazodone, without reassessing morning dosing or vilazodone's role. Sexual dysfunction → PDE5 inhibitor prescription – Erectile dysfunction leads to sildenafil use, when the root cause is vilazodone's serotonergic activity. Vilazodone's combination of SSRI and 5-HT1A partial agonist activity makes it somewhat distinct, but its side effect profile and interactions require the same careful monitoring as other antidepressants. Healthcare professionals can play a key role in catching early signs of adverse effects, preventing prescribing cascades, and ensuring drug–drug interactions are managed appropriately.

Michelle Cain's journey as a caregiver began when her mother was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia during the pandemic, a time already fraught with uncertainty and stress. At 47, Michelle found herself in the “sandwich generation,” balancing the needs of her own family—her husband and two sons—with the increasing demands of caring for her mother. The diagnosis came as a shock, and Michelle quickly had to navigate the complexities of her mother's delusions, the challenges of finding appropriate care, and the emotional toll of watching a parent's health decline. Despite a complicated relationship with her mother, Michelle became the primary caregiver, a role shaped by both proximity and necessity.Throughout this experience, Michelle confronted not only the practical aspects of caregiving but also deep-seated emotional issues. Her mother's illness unearthed decades of unresolved resentment and anger, forcing Michelle to process and ultimately find forgiveness. This journey was made even more challenging by the pressures of the pandemic and personal struggles within her own family, including her son's eating disorder and her ongoing commitment to sobriety. Michelle's story is one of resilience and growth—she openly shares how her caregiving role, though difficult, became a catalyst for healing and self-discovery.Michelle's insights, captured in her book “Did Mom Drop Acid?”, offer valuable lessons for others in similar situations. She emphasizes the importance of accepting help, maintaining a sense of humor, and recognizing that grief and forgiveness are complex, ongoing processes. Her candid reflections provide hope and guidance for caregivers facing their own challenges, illustrating that even in the midst of chaos, there can be unexpected gifts and opportunities for personal transformation.Thank you to sponsor: CareScoutLearn more about Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver: https://confessionsofareluctantcaregiver.com/** Caregiver Action Network Caregiver Help Desk offers free support to family caregivers via phone, chat, or email Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 7:00 pm Eastern. Welcome back to the It's All Greek Retrospective series that contains previously aired short segments about gardening acronyms, jargon, and botanical nomenclature. In this third and last part of a series, Master Gardener Jean Thomas covers plants that have been named after people, a discussion about soil pH, and a range of acronyms. The first short segment covers the popularity of naming plants for people. It's been going on since people began naming plants at all, dating back to at least four centuries BC. Two causes are usually to blame; either the ego of the “discoverer” or the desire to flatter someone powerful. There are often great stories to uncover. One of the most interesting is the name of the Christmas standard, the Poinsettia (not poinTsettia). Dr, Joel Poinsett was the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and an avid plant collector. His life story is a colorful one, but the only reason anyone remembers his name is because of the seasonal flower. Actually, the history of the flower and its interaction with humans is equally interesting. Some other names every gardener is familiar with are: Forsyth because this gentleman (1737-1804) was a respected palace gardener in England and was honored with the name of the familiar Forsythia; Kasper Wister (died in 1818) was a famous botanist in Pennsylvania and honored with the name of the popular Wisteria. Wister and Forsyth were honored by the English botanist Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), who spent over thirty years cataloging plants in the U.S., and had the power to assign formal names to plants. The familiar Magnolia x soulangeana was named by and for Pierre Magnol and m. Soulange-Boudin, and developed from two Chinese species. Many familiar shrubs bear the species names (like Sargentii( C.S. Sargent), Fortuneii (R. Fortune), Thunbergii ( Carl Peter Thunberg)), named for contemporaries and students of Linnaeus. Many plant and animal names honor the interesting Pere Armand David with the appelation “davidii.” The familiar Fuchsia (Dr. Fuchs) and Dahlia (Dr. Dahl) are good herbaceous examples. The large Lobelia group (415 species) was named by Linnaeus himself for Dr. Mathias De Lobile. The conversation then moves on to one of the great topics discussed by gardeners without a real understanding of the mechanism. The pH of soil is crucially important and measured and adjusted fanatically by gardeners. The way the chemistry works is described, starting with the litmus papers we dealt with in school science classes. Cations and anions are the active ions that determine how soil makes nutrition available to plants. A scale is used, with one end called acid and the other end called alkaline. The place on the scale tells the soil's description as to what kinds of nutrients are best assimilated. “Acid” soil is best for blueberries and Rhododendrons and “Alkaline” soil is better for Lilacs and Spirea. Gardeners assiduously “adjust” the soil with amendments like sulfur or wood ash, remembering that this takes several seasons to effect. Jean closes this segment with an aside about names where she wonders about Monkshood, Begonias and Darth Vader. The final segment moves on to acronyms, which translates to “names from the extremities.” It refers to new names for things created from the initials of word describing the things. Like Scuba, Laser, and Yahoo. There is also another related usage of initials called initialism, where the actual letters are sounded out, not merged into a new word. For instance, AT&T or DEC. Both of these practices are twentieth century phenomena. Further discussion of acronyms leads us to AVID, CRISP and PRISM, all popular programs in New York, devised by Cornell and the NY Department of Conservation. In a nutshell, the ideal acronym is an invented word that should either help recognize its subject or be catchy enough to be memorable and relatable to its subject. David and Becky highlight both the strengths and cautions: formic acid's ability to deliver a fast, thorough mite knockdown, its temperature sensitivity, and its potential to cause temporary brood loss or even queen replacement in stressed colonies. They emphasize protective gear, ventilation requirements, and why strong colonies benefit most from treatment. From freezer tricks to reduce fumes, to understanding normal bee behaviors like bearding after application, this episode gives beekeepers the knowledge to use formic acid effectively and safely—making it a valuable addition to a year-round mite management plan. Jesse P. Pollack: The Acid King ( Ricky Kasso )Real stories. Real teens. Real consequences.A murder in a small Long Island town reveals the dark secrets lurking behind the seemingly peaceful façade in this latest installment of the Simon True series. On June 19, 1984, seventeen-year-old Ricky Kasso murdered Gary Lauwers in what local police and the international press dubbed a “Satanic Sacrifice.”The murder became the subject of several popular songs, and television specials addressed the issue of whether or not America's teens were practicing Satanism. Even Congress got in on the act, debating Satanic symbolism in songs by performers like AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne. “The country is in crisis!” screamed the pundits. After all, it was the height of the Reagan era and Nancy Reagan's “just say no” campaign was everywhere. But what this case revealed were bigger problems lurking at the heart of suburban America.Ricky Kasso wasn't a bad kid, but he was lost. To feel better, he started smoking pot, moving on from that to PCP and LSD. He ended up living on the streets and thinking he had nothing to lose. Gary Lauwers went from being a victim of bullying to using drugs to fit in, and finally robbery—but then he made the mistake of stealing from Ricky, and from that moment on, his fate was sealed.A few months later, Gary went into the woods behind the park with Ricky and two other boys. Only three of them came out.The subsequent police investigation and accompanying media circus turned the village upside down. It shattered the image of an idyllic small town, changed the way neighbors viewed each other, and recast the War on Drugs.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Kathryn MacDonald : Dr Jeff MacDonald Ft Bragg MurdersAt 3:42 a.m. on February 17, 1970, dispatchers at Fort Bragg received an emergency phone call from MacDonald, who reported a "stabbing." Four responding military police officers arrived at his house located at 544 Castle Drive, initially believing that they were being called to settle a domestic disturbance. They found the front door closed and locked and the house dark inside. When no one answered the door, they circled to the back of the house, where they found the back screen door closed and unlocked and the back door wide open. Upon entering, they found Jeffrey's wife Colette and his daughters Kimberly and Kristen dead in their respective bedrooms.Five-year-old Kimberly was found in her bed, having been clubbed in the head and stabbed in the neck with a knife between eight and ten times. Two-year-old Kristen was found in her own bed; she had been stabbed 33 times with a knife and 15 times with an ice pick. Colette, who was pregnant with her third child and first son, was lying on the floor of her bedroom. She had been repeatedly clubbed (both her arms were broken) and stabbed 21 times with an ice pick and 16 times with a knife. MacDonald's torn pajama top was draped upon her chest. On the headboard of her bed, the word "pig" was written in blood.[4][5][6]MacDonald was found next to his wife alive but wounded. His wounds were not as severe nor as numerous as those his family had suffered. He was immediately taken to nearby Womack Hospital. MacDonald suffered cuts and bruises on his face and chest, along with a mild concussion. He also had a stab wound on his left torso that a staff surgeon described as a "clean, small, sharp" incision that caused his left lung to partially collapse. He was released from the hospital after one week.[7]MacDonald's accountMacDonald told investigators that on the evening of February 16, he had fallen asleep on the living room couch. He told investigators that he did so because Kristen had been in bed with Colette and had wet his side of it. He was later awakened by Colette and Kimberly's screams. As he rose from the couch to go to their aid, he was attacked by three male intruders, one black and two white. A fourth intruder, described as a white female with long blonde hair and wearing high heeled boots and a white floppy hat partially covering her face, stood nearby with a lighted candle and chanted, "Acid is groovy, kill the pigs." The three males attacked him with a club and ice pick. During the struggle, he claimed that his pajama top was pulled over his head to his wrists and he then used it to ward off thrusts from the ice pick. Eventually, he stated that he was overcome by his assailants and was knocked unconscious in the living room end of the hallway leading to the bedrooms.[8]Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

In this installment of the Varroa Treatment Series, Jeff and Becky welcome Dr. David Peck of BetterBee to discuss oxalic acid treatments, one of the most widely used organic options for controlling Varroa mites. The conversation explores both oxalic acid vaporization (OAV) and the dribble method, breaking down how each is applied, safety considerations, and when they are most effective. David explains the differences between registered products like Api-Bioxal and EZ-OX, recent label updates allowing higher dosages, and practical tips for using each method safely—particularly the critical need for proper respiratory and eye protection with vaporization. He also shares insights into when broodless periods provide the greatest impact, why oxalic acid poses minimal risk to bees but requires careful handling by beekeepers, and what research still doesn't know about how this acid kills mites. This episode is an essential listen for beekeepers looking to add oxalic acid—whether dribble or vaporization—to their integrated mite management toolkit. Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, did so much LSD that he experienced a mental breakdown just as the band began to achieve mainstream success. His drug use began as mind-altering inspiration for his art, but quickly became a coping mechanism for the demands of commercial success. He became paralyzed in front of television cameras. He detuned his guitar until it was literally unplayable and refused to perform alongside his band. Then he stopped showing up at all.
