Yasi chats with New Yorker staff writer, Pulitzer prize–winning author, and known Pavement aficionado Hua Hsu about the 2025 film 'Pavements.' Is it a documentary? Is it a biopic? Is it a secret third thing? Did we like it? All these questions and more are answered. Plus, Yasi has a nice long chat with director Alex Ross Perry about the film and several other things, including but not limited to his take on vocal fry, 'Some Kind Of Monster,' and different approaches to mythmaking. It is an honour to welcome filmmaker Alex Ross Perry to discuss his magisterial music film Pavements, about the band Pavement, as it arrives on MUBI on July 11th 2025. We also took the opportunity to discuss his 3hr video essay love letter to video stores, Videoheaven, which is available to screen direct from Cinema Conservancy. For a deeper insight into our thoughts on the film, check out Neil and Dario's reflections from the second 2024 London Film Festival episode, the festival where Pavements had its UK premiere. To book Videoheaven, email Andrew@conservecinema.org. In the main conversation, Neil talks to director Alex Ross Perry about the making of Pavements, getting into the weeds on the thought processes and collaborations (editor, actors, band) required to make such a complex film, but one that captures Alex's intention to make a cinematic work that captures the musical and cultural spirit of the band and music at the heart of the story. In Dario and Neil's bit, they take the meta-ness even further by discussing the process of talking on the podcast with Alex about the film as well as the challenges of communicating what makes something 'good' particularly when the form seems to undercut straight storytelling, and sincerity, throughout. Something that works due to the band's own history with those contexts. ——— Visit our Patreon at www.patreon.com/cinematologists ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Keith Parry founded and ran the legendary record store and label, Scratch Records, which opened in 1987. He played in bands including Superconductor, Octatrackter, Twerdocleb, Kicking it with Coho, The Gay, Pink Mountaintops, and Neko Case. Keith lives on Vancouver Island and we walked and talked on April 25th 2025, when he came to Vancouver to see some music shows. This conversation will extend across two episodes and this is part two. Scratch Records started in 1987 at 317A Cambie St. It moved to 109 West Cordova St, 726 Richards St, and finally, the Interurban Gallery at 1 East Hastings (2010-2104). Windwalker: Burning Inside on The Mint Is A Terrible Thing To Taste (Mint Records 1991) The Smugglers: Vancouver, B.C. on The Smugglers At Marineland (Nardwuar Records 1991)
The new F1 brings even more attention to a sport/brand that's becoming as popular in the U.S. as it is internationally, but its application of sports-movie tropes to the world of racing, in particular its focus on an intersquad rivalry, has big, booming echoes in the defiantly American world of NASCAR as depicted in TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY. The 2006 Adam McKay/Will Ferrell comedy isn't even two decades old, but as discussed in this week's revisitation, its loose, improv-driven approach already feels like a relic of the past, and to what degree it all holds up today is a matter of some debate — though we can at least all agree that Baby Jesus is the best Jesus. After that, we dip into some listener Feedback inspired by a couple of new releases recently covered on the podcast, MATERIALISTS and PAVEMENTS. Please share your thoughts about TALLADEGA NIGHTS, F1, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Thinking Transportation: Engaging Conversations about Transportation Innovations
Every four years, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) issues its Report Card for America's Infrastructure. Expressed in reader-friendly letter grades, the ratings document the current state of the country's major infrastructure assets, while also identifying needed improvements and contextualizing the relative health of these assets over time. Today, we talk to two experts--TTI's Edith Arámbula Mercado and the Texas Department of Transportation's Jamie Farris--about ASCE's 2025 report card and how Texas ranks nationally in terms of the health and reliability of its roads and bridges.
This week we're talking about US Maple. Which is a bit like saying we're talking about having your teeth drilled without anaesthetic. The Chicago quartet spent twelve years making music that deliberately disappointed every expectation you might have about rock music. They took guitars, drums, and vocals and somehow made them sound like they were arguing with each other in a language nobody understood. It was brilliant. It was infuriating. It was absolutely necessary. This is the final part of our Anti Rock trilogy, where we've been exploring bands that knew the rules of rock music inside out and chose to break every single one of them. US Maple didn't just break the rules though. They took the rulebook, fed it through a modified guitar with quarter tone frets, and sang over it like a demented lounge singer having a breakdown. We get into their impossible discography, their custom instruments that were designed to sound worse, their legendary tour with Pavement where they got pelted with rubbish nightly, and that infamous Oklahoma City incident involving Xanax and a cockroach. We also try to answer the eternal question: why would anyone voluntarily listen to this? Fair warning: this episode might make you feel slightly seasick. That's entirely by design. Featuring Ferruccio Quercetti from the brilliant Italian band Cut, who knows more about post punk and experimental music than literally anyone we know. On this week's show, the Edinburgh Filmhouse is back, bay-bee! Peter, Jamie and Anahit offer their thoughts and well-wishes after each visiting it on opening weekend. If you've ever wanted to hear us talk about legroom and patina, you're in luck. Film-wise, we review Pavements, Alex Ross Perry's multi-stranded doc/biopic/musical of Peter's favourite 90s slacker indie band, and 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle's return to the land of iPhone cameras, violent zombies and haunting depictions of faux-50s provincialism (they're calling it 'The UK', etc etc). This week the ghouls discuss Romero's iconic zombie classic, Night of the Living Dead. From wiki: “Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent zombie horror film directed, photographed, and edited by George A. Romero, written by Romero and John Russo, produced by Russell Streiner and Karl Hardman, and starring Duane Jones and Judith O'Dea. The story follows seven people trapped in a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania, under assault by flesh-eating reanimated corpses. Although the monsters that appear in the film are referred to as "ghouls", they are credited with popularizing the modern portrayal of zombies in popular culture.”Also discussed: Drusilla's new house, Clash of the Titans and Ray Harryhausen, Showgirls and gay people, Pavements the Pavement doc, Train to Busan, Diary of the Dead, Army of the Dead, World War Z, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and more! You can't get this kind of goodness without a prescription (or a warrant) - it's a roundabout look at the upcoming 2025 Pike's Peak International Hillclimb [PPIHC.org (or .com - choose your adventure)], with everything from drivers, racecars (because racecar!), viewing (in-person or on TV and online), spectating (because you're not going to choke on race fuel fumes in your living room - probably), course info (best turns and, well, there are no worst turns here), and a little bit of history (because you can't do 100+ years of racing without having something historic happen). Also, Hostus Maximus Justin Fort makes up a few words, describes a few things, and hits on a few highlights from the upcoming JF Summit #3. What's more? A head's up on an upside of the "big beautiful bill" - seems there is a little good tucked in this monstrosity for shooters, hunters and Second Amendment fans. Also, backgrounds and full-on Euro club-hop weirdness from "This Is Everybody Too".

This week, Scott sat down with Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien and Foreign Policy Editors Daniel Byman and Dana Stuster to talk through the week's big news in Israel and Iran, including:“The Nuclear Option.” Israel crossed the rubicon late last week and took direct military action against Iran's nuclear weapons program, among other targets, in an aggressive unilateral military campaign that has only expanded in the ensuing days. Iran, meanwhile, has reciprocated with volleys of attacks against Israel, some of which are getting through the substantial missile defenses Israel (and the United States) have deployed. It's the Middle East war everyone has feared for more than a decade. How will it come to an end? And what will its ramifications be for the region?“Bibi Got Back.” Israel has threatened to take direct military action against Iran over its nuclear program multiple times over the past two decades but has always stopped short. Why did Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proceed this time? And what will the implications be for his government, which has been teetering on the edge of collapse? And for his relationship with President Trump, his once close ally who declined to back his decision to proceed?“Bye-Atollah.” While Israel's official target has been Iran's nuclear and military complexes, many observers suspect that their real goal is something else: regime change. And recent reports that Netanyahu proposed killing Iranian political and spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini—but relented after objections from the Trump administration—suggest they may be right. What might Iran look like if its current regime collapses? And will it help or hurt Israeli (and U.S.) security interests? In Object Lessons, Tyler sang the praises of online radio station NTS.Live and NTS Guides to all of your quirky and eclectic musical tastes. Scott didn't miss a beat with his throwback recommendation of Schoolhouse Rock song covers, with a particular fondness for Pavement's rendition of No More Kings. Like I'M NOT THERE, Alex Ross Perry's new docu-like feature PAVEMENTS takes a “print the legend” approach to its subject, blurring reality and fiction to convey the significance of defining ‘90s indie rock group Pavement from a few different semi-fabricated angles. Is that approach better suited to established fans, including our returning guest and longtime friend Noel Murray, than it is to newcomers less equipped to parse how the film skews the band's history and creative output? Perhaps, and we get into that this week before placing PAVEMENTS' slanted snapshot next to I'M NOT THERE's fractured Bob Dylan portrait to see how each attempts to portray an artist's essence, if not their biography, and explores how fame can turn a person into a persona. And in Your Next Picture Show we recommend another one of Perry's experiments in using music-biopic conventions to tell a different kind of rock-n-roll story, 2018's HER SMELL. Please share your thoughts about I'M NOT THERE, PAVEMENTS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. In this episode, I'm talking with Caleb, Miles, and John from Low Phase. This band from Grand Rapids is one to watch. They play beautifully layered and thoughtful music akin to bands such as Pavement and Broken Social Scene with touches of Radiohead and Bright Eyes. Their new single, “I Saw You First” is a wondrous song which captures the mixture of fear and comfort that new love brings. Low Phase has only just begun to create and I can't wait to see where they take us.You can catch Low Phase at the Pyramid Scheme on July 12 in Grand RapidsLow PhaseCheck out their musicFollow on Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, YoutubeFans With BandsSubscribe to Fans With Bands on your favorite podcast service such as Apple, Youtube, Spotify, Audible, or Amazon Music. Alex Ross Perry's new hybrid documentary PAVEMENTS rejects convention in a way that's both in keeping with the spirit of the '90s indie-rock band at its center, and reminiscent of Todd Haynes' deconstructed Bob Dylan biopic I'M NOT THERE. And while you arguably don't need to be well-versed in either act to appreciate the films about them, it certainly doesn't hurt, which is why we've brought in our old friend Noel Murray to help us parse two films that are more concerned with conveying an artist's essence than their biography, beginning this week with I'M NOT THERE's freewheelin' approach to Bob Dylan. Then, in place of Feedback, our resident Dylan scholars provide several recommendations that offer some other, more straightforward angles from which to approach the man and his music. Please share your thoughts about I'M NOT THERE, PAVEMENTS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Luke and Andrew reflect on Marc Maron's decision to end his podcast and the news that their old podcast network is essentially no more. They also discuss the new Pavement doc, which Andrew just watched, and the new Pee Wee Herman doc, which Luke is watching.
We were admittedly a bit dubious going into this pairing, which was spoken into existence by writer-director Andrew DeYoung invoking THE MASTER when describing his new Tim Robinson/Paul Rudd comedy FRIENDSHIP, but it's not the stretch we thought it would be. In fact, Paul Thomas Anderson's discomfiting psychological drama proves such an interesting lens through which to view FRIENDSHIP's discomfiting absurdist comedy that we move into Connections early, to discuss how each of these two films about lonely men at odds with their own reality bucks convention, not only in terms of narrative and character, but in style and structure as well. Then in Your Next Picture Show we give a glimpse of the episode that could have been if we had chosen the PTA film we went into FRIENDSHIP expecting to be reminded of (and still kind of were): PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. Please share your thoughts about THE MASTER, FRIENDSHIP, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Jeff Pojanowski. Jeff is a professor at Notre Dame Law School, where he teaches and writes about philosophy of law and legal interpretation. He also writes occasional columns for The Pillar. He has been living happily in Northern Indiana after escaping Washington, D.C., 15 years ago.Jeff's Music Pick: Turnpike TroubadoursThis is a rarity for Political Beats, in which we present a show driven largely by our guest's preferences. Jeff Pojanowski joined us previously for Pavement and Crowded House and by now we trust his musical judgement. For quite a while, he's been selling us hard on taking up the career of Turnpike Troubadours for an episode. With the recent release of a new album, and additional endorsements of the band from others in our sphere, it seemed a good time to take him up on the offer. We're awfully glad we did.The Turnpike Troubadours, hailing from Oklahoma, have become one of the leading purveyors of Red Dirt country music, featuring songs that are masterclasses in storytelling, instrumentation, and authenticity. Look, if you don't like fiddle, you might be in the wrong place. Formed in 2005 by frontman Evan Felker and bassist R. C. Edwards, the band's early years were shaped by relentless touring. The first album, Bossier City, is almost more a collection of demos. The group wasn't quite fully formed yet. But on Diamonds & Gasoline (2010), everything began to click into place. As the band matured, their songwriting deepened without losing its raw immediacy. Albums like Goodbye Normal Street (2012) and The Turnpike Troubadours (2015) would be highlights of any band's career. Felker's songwriting stands out not just for its precision (though occasional lyrical duplicity can leave the listener wondering exactly what a song is about), but for its ability to evoke vivid rural landscapes. These are songs about places and towns that many Americans easily can picture in their mind. Musically, Kyle Nix's fiddle and Ryan Engleman's guitar work offered a dynamic counterpoint that always serves the song first. The band's career wasn't without turbulence, of course. After the 2017 release of A Long Way from Your Heart, the band entered a hiatus amid Felker's battle with alcoholism. Fans cheered the band's 2022 comeback, marked by the release of the Shooter Jennings-produced A Cat in the Rain. It's impossible to listen to songs on the record without putting them in the context of Felker's troubles. It's an album that likely had to be made, however, to bring the band to 2025's The Price of Admission, a release that all three of your hosts come to praise. There's probably still a lot of music left in the tank for Turnpike Troubadours, and there's no better time than now to jump on board to discover what you might have been missing.
