Hello friends! Ram Vela from Austin-based, power-pop band, Ram Vela & The Easy Targets is my guest for episode 1482! Their new single, "Westerberg" an ode to Replacements' singer, Paul Westerberg, is available now on 7" vinyl and streaming. Find them their music, socials, and more on their Linktree. Ram and I have a great conversation about growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, discovering rock and roll, finding his way to Austin in 2001, his old band Whitman, starting The Easy Targets in 2018, getting Stella Maxwell (Stella & The Very Messed, Cruiserweight) to sing back-up on "Westerberg" after being a fan for over 20 years, recording with producer Matt Parmenter at Ice Cream Factory Studios, and much more. I had a great time getting to know Ram. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down!   Follow us on Instagram, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod.   If you feel so inclined. Before January wraps, let's celebrate that 39 years ago this month on January 18, 1986, the Replacements got banned for life from SNL. In the middle of playing "Bastards of Young" on live TV, singer Paul Westerberg yelled to guitarist Bob Stinson, "Come on, F*cker!" during this guitar solo. In a combo platter of VIDEO and audio featuring one of our favorite guests, Tommy Stinson tells the story of yet another rowdy New York incident when the band played at the legendary CBGB. When the God of Thunder, Gene Simmons from KISS, walked in the Replacements decided that being on their worst behavior was exactly what the occasion called for. WATCH HERE: https://youtube.com/shorts/FbcKOyA7mAA Tommy's on tour! In this episode, the Minneapolis kid who grew up playing bass in one of rock 'n' roll's most notorious bands talks about wearing dresses while opening for Tom Petty; Rock in Rio with Guns N' Roses in front of 500,000 fans and not being able to hear a thing; and the weather-induced fear of encountering a TORDANO on the road. Peter Jesperson has had an incredible career in music. Initially inspired by watching The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, Peter took a job at legendary record store Oar Folkjokeopus in 1973 and became the primary DJ at Jay's Longhorn in 1977. He was a co-founder of Twin / Tone Records the following year. Along the way, Paul Westerberg dropped off the famous demo tape for The Replacements. Peter eventually became the manager for the 'Mats and spent time of the road with R.E.M. After overcoming some personal issues (he's now been 33 years sober!), Peter moved to LA and worked with New West Records and with artists like Vic Chestnutt, Jack Logan, The Flatlanders and many more. Most recently, he has written a fabulous new book, Euphoric Recall. We talked about his life and threw in some Chicago stories. In 1984, The Replacements were gaining a reputation as fun live punk band, always delivering loud, raucous tunes with setlists full of covers and aggressive originals. They intentionally thwarted management's efforts to get them on bigger labels by sabotaging shows they knew record company reps would be attending. The Minneapolis quartet of Paul Westerberg on vocals, Bob Stinson on guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass and Chris Mars on drums carved out a loyal following and had begun to win over fans around the country thanks to opening for REM. But Westerberg's songwriting, especially his lyrics, were too strong to be for only those moshing around through a drunken haze. With Let It Be, the band explores more personal themes (Unsatisfied, Answering Machine, Androgynous) and captured more melody than they had previously. They still had plenty of straight ahead punk songs (We're Comin' Out, Tommy Got His Tonsils Out, Gary's Got A Boner) but also tried to empathize with those who might not understand the world around them and how to relate (Sixteen Blue). Westerberg's lyrics are personal and poignant and still resonate to this day. Plus, there's a KISS cover song on the album so what's not to like? We didn't find this record until later in life but if you're unfamiliar, I think you'll like a lot of what you hear as we delve into deep topics we don't always weigh in on thanks to this punk classic. This month’s second part of the monthly new release series is bookended by a pair of…well, let’s be honest…pretty bizarre cover albums. The first set contains tracks from the “new” duets album by Glen Campbell. How can it be new when he’s been dead since 2017? Well, in 2011 he released an album, Ghost On the Canvas (his 61st!), that featured his versions of songs by artists you would never think he’d even acknowledge. For this new one, Glen Campbell Duets: Ghost on the Canvas Sessions, the producers have brought in other artists to add their vocals. I just couldn’t stomach the idea of Sting singing a Paul Westerberg song, so I went with a couple of different tracks. How did Exene and John Doe from X end up on “Any Trouble”? And does anyone really believe that country star Eric Church has even heard of Guided By Voices? It just doesn’t seem possibe. As if that’s not crazy enough, the last main set of the show features a handful of tracks from a new tribute album released by Cleopatra Records. Today's guest makes me feel like royalty. It's drummer Michael Bland and he has worked with some of the best in the business. But before that, he played in school and found out he had perfect pitch! Finding that out helped solidify his decision to be a musician. But his parents weren't exactly thrilled about the idea and pushed him to have a backup plan. That is, until Prince called the house looking for Michael. This started a trend of Michael being offered jobs on stage in the middle of jams. Michael was the drummer for The New Power Generation during a time where Prince was reinventing himself. But Prince isn't the only high profile artist Michael has worked with. There's Paul Westerberg, Chaka Khan, Maxwell, Nick Jonas, & Soul Asylum.  Michael relays some behind-the-scenes stories about Prince, Paisley Park, and The Paisley Park Power Trio, among other things. And that ties in to a new project he's working on with long-time collaborator, Sonny Thompson called (Br)others. They have a single coming out and are playing a show with a lot of The New Power Generation. Check Michael out @michaelblandofficial & @brothersmusic2024 on Instagram. Hey. It's a special one this week. Juliana Hatfield is a singer-songwriter based in Massachusetts. She was a member of the Lemonheads in the early 90s, as well as bands like Blake Babies in the late 80s and Some Girls in the early 00s. She's made albums with Matthew Caws from Nada Surf and Paul Westerberg from The Replacements. She's also released around 20 albums under her own name, sometimes as the Juliana Hatfield Three. Although a prolific songwriter, in recent years she occasionally releases an album of covers by a specific artist. Her latest one, “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO”, follows her albums of songs by Olivia Newton John and The Police. Being a big ELO fan myself, it seemed like a great time to talk with her. She had a particular rough time in the press in the 90s and he experience with working with a major label has clearly left it's scars. Stick with this one, after a lot of ELO geek talk we go deep. It was genuinely one of my favourite conversations I've had for the show. Sometimes you have a guest where you feel you're really chasing down some kind of epiphany. I'm not sure we reached one, but you decide. Insta: @sendingsignalspodcastX: @signalspodcast

It's time to hear about producer Ed Stasium's acclaimed new remix of the Replacements' album Tim, as well as his work with the Ramones, Talking Heads and the Smithereens. How did Stasium make the "Let It Bleed Edition" of Tim so much more muscular than Tommy Erdelyi's original mix? Has he gotten feedback from Paul Westerberg? How did Stasium work with Erdelyi (a.k.a. Tommy Ramone) on the classic early Ramones albums? How did he wind up playing on the Ramones' Phil Spector-produced End of the Century and getting held prisoner in Spector's home? Why, despite the Smithereens' Dennis Diken's objections, does he like drummers to play with click tracks? What happened when Madonna was scheduled to sing on a Smithereens song? In addition to being a gorgeous rom com, the movie Singles also ended up preserving the Seattle music scene of the early 90's in film amber. Cameron Crowe's homage of vignettes to his adopted home brought together now iconic artists like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Chris Cornell and Soundgarden, and Mudhoney. Whether the artists thought the project was a good idea or not varied, but the results were undeniable. It was recorded barely a month earlier on July 29, 1965. The song was also included on an early, European Dylan compilation album entitled Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2.An earlier, alternate version of the song has been released, in different takes, beginning with the appearance of one take on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991 in 1991.Covered by Steven Stills, Leon Russell, Marianne Faithful, Taj Mahal, Paul Westerberg, Robyn Hitchcock and Lucinda Williams Dylan's live debut of the song came as part of Dylan's controversial electric set, backed by members of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Al Kooper, at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965, after "Maggie's Farm".[2][4][5][7] After being heckled during the electric set, and especially during "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry", by fans who wanted Dylan to play acoustic folk music, Dylan returned to play acoustic versions of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".[4][7] The Newport performance of "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" features jamming by guitarist Bloomfield and organist Al Kooper.[4] Dylan played it live as part of his set in the August 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. This version was included in the concert film and Grammy Award-winning album of the same title.[2]A.         Dead played it 7 times:first time on June 10, 1973 at RFK Stadium (D.C.) with Allman Brothersfive times in 1991 and once on March 16, 1992 at the Spectrum, Philly Released on Dead album:  Postcards of the Hanging (March, 2002) B.         Jerry's various bands played it about 60 times, first time on January 15, 1972 at Keystone Korner in S.F. w/Merle SaundersLast time by JGB: March 4, 1995 at the Warfield in S.F.                                SHOW #1:           Finders Keepers                                Track No. 1                                3:00 – 4:13                 Finders Keepers was performed over 20 times by Jerry Garcia with the Garcia/Saunders band, Legion of Mary and Reconstruction between 1973 and 1979.On the 1973 Garcia/Saunders Keystone double album the song is called Finders Keepers and is correctly credited to Johnston and Bowen. The song was written by General Johnson, a member of the group Chairmen Of The Board, and Jeffrey Bowen, the producer of the Chairmen Of The Board recording. The song was originally released by the Chairmen Of The Board as a single with a vocal version of the song on the A side and an instrumental version on the B-side.  Chairmen of the Board is an American-Canadian, Detroit, Michigan-based soul musicgroup, who saw their greatest commercial success in the 1970s.  SHOW #2:           The Harder They Come                                Track No. 2                                1:05 – 2:18 "The Harder They Come" is a reggae song by the Jamaican singer Jimmy Cliff. It was first recorded for the soundtrack of the 1972 movie of the same name, in which it is supposed to have been written by the film's main character, Ivanhoe Martin. In 1969, singer Jimmy Cliff met film director Perry Henzell, who was intending to make a film about a musician who turned to crime. Cliff agreed to take the lead role, and the film was shot over the next two years. During filming, Cliff came up with the line "the harder they come". Henzell thought it would make a good title for the film, and asked Cliff to write and record a theme song for it.[2]The actual recording of the track, at Dynamic Sounds (Muscle Shoals, 1971), was filmed for inclusion in the movie. Cliff wrote the melody, and improvised the lyrics. The musicians were Gladstone Anderson (piano), Winston Wright (organ), Winston Grennan (drums), Linford "Hux" Brown (lead guitar), Ranford "Ranny Bop" Williams (rhythm guitar), and Clifton "Jackie" Jackson (bass).[2]Reggae track recorded in Jamaica in 1972 Covered by:  JGB (Kean College 2.2.80), Cher, Keith Richards (b-side to his single, Run Rudolph Run 1978), Rancid, Joe Strummer, Wayne Kramer, moe., Willie Nelson, Guster, Widespread Panic and many others The Harder They Come was performed over 350 times by Jerry Garcia/Merl Saunders groups and by the Jerry Garcia Band between 1973 and 1995. The lyrics and music for the song are included in the Jerry Garcia Songbook. Also played by Phil Lesh & Friends, Billy & The Kids, Voodoo Dead and Bob Weir with Soul Ska.                                SHOW #3:           That's All Right Mama                                Track No. 3                                2:20 – 3:59                                Featuring:  Bill Atwood on Trumpet and Sara Fulcher on vocals                                                              The song was written by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, and originally recorded by him in Chicago on September 6, 1946, as "That's All Right". Some of the lyrics are traditional blues verses first recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson in 1926.[5][6] Crudup's recording was released as a single in 1947 on RCA Victor 20–2205, but was less successful than some of his previous recordings. One of the experts who consider the Crudup recording to be the "first rock and roll song" is Southeastern Louisiana University rock historian Joseph Burns, who adds that "this song could contain the first ever guitar solo break". Elvis Presley's version was recorded in July 1954.[10] While recording an album as part of a trio called The Blue Moon Boys, the band played "That's All Right" in between takes, and the uptempo style characteristic of rockabilly caught the attention of studio executive Sam Phillips, who asked for a refinement of the interpretation that was later recorded.[11] Its catalogue number was Sun 209.[12] The song was released under its original title, "That's All Right", and names the performers as Elvis Presley, Scotty, and Bill.[13] The Presley version was not identical to Crudup's since it was "at least twice as fast as the original".[2] His version is considered by some music critics as one of the records that was the first in the rock n'roll genre.  A 2004 article in The Guardian argues that rather than Presley's version being one of the first records of rock and roll, it was simply one of "the first white artists' interpretations of a sound already well-established by black musicians almost a decade before [...] a raucous, driving, unnamed variant of rhythm and blues". Covered by the Grateful Dead once with allman Brothers on June 10, 1973 (RFK great version with Jerry and Dickey Betts trading off lead licks) and once om April 18, 1986 at Berkeley Community TheaterPlayed regularly by JGB and other versions from the ‘70's until the end in 1995.                               SHOW #4:           Second That Emotion                                Track No. 5                                7:00 – 8:29 "I Second That Emotion" is a 1967 song written by Smokey Robinson and Al Cleveland. First charting as a hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles on the Tamla/Motown label in 1967, "I Second That Emotion" was later a hit single for the group duet Diana Ross & the Supremes and The Temptations, also on the Motown label. One morning in 1967, Robinson and Cleveland were shopping at Hudson's, a Detroit department store. Robinson found a set of pearls for his wife, Claudette. "They're beautiful." he said to the salesperson. "I sure hope she likes them." Cleveland then added "I second that emotion." Both songwriters laughed at Cleveland's malapropism; he had meant to say "I second that motion." The two were immediately inspired to write a song using the incorrect phrase. Was performed a handful of times (7) by the Grateful Dead in April, 1971First:  April 8, 1971 at The Music Hall, BostonLast:  April 29, 1971 at Fillmore East NYC Part of Jerry's bands repertoire between 1973 and 1994 (played almost 200 times)  OUTRO:                Sweet Little Angel                                Track #7                                2:20 – 3:59                 Written by BB King and Jules Taub in September, 1956                Some say it is an adaption of Black Angel Blues written by Lucille Bogan in December, 1930 In 1956, B.B. King recorded "Sweet Little Angel" (RPM Records 468). According to King, "I got the idea for 'Sweet Little Angel' from Robert Nighthawk's 'Sweet Black Angel', though I later discovered that the song had been recorded by someone before Nighthawk. At the time 'black' was not a popular word, as it is now. Instead of using the old title, I changed it to 'Sweet Little Angel'—and that was a pretty big record for me".[6] King's version, which included a horn section, was a stylistic shift for the song and it became a hit, reaching number eight on the Billboard R&B chart.[7] In 1957, he re-recorded "Sweet Little Angel" for his first album Singin' the Blues. Both versions prominently feature B.B. King's guitar work, with his note-bends "sounding almost like a lap steel in places.”

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, I am so very excited to have Juliana Hatfield on the show. She's been one of my absolute favorite artists since I first heard the Blake Babies' “Earwig” back in the early 90s. Since then, she's consistently put out great albums and been extremely prolific – releasing almost 20 albums in addition to collaborations with Paul Westerberg, Matthews Caws, Evan Dando, and others. Her most recent, out November 17th, is “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO,” a continuation of her series of tribute albums that have featured Olivia Newton-John and The Police. Today, Juliana talks about her career and how the politics of the music business led her to almost quit entirely and how that journey led her to go back to school to try and get an MFA in fine art.   Musical credits: "On Top Of It" by Blue Dot Sessions Juliana Hatfield's website with tour dates and more info. Juliana's art work can be found here. Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! The Ledge has always been known to enjoy music from all over the world. This month’s new release episode, however, goes ever further than usual. Yes, we have new tunes from many of the usual suspects – Canada, Australia, England, Sweden, etc. But this month we expand that a little bit and have tunes from Indonesia and Japan! (Ok, Japanese rock and roll is not so unusual in these parts, but you get the picture.) There’s also the usual mix of long-awaited returns (Uni Boys, Wreckless Eric), and new (at least to me) artists such as Hurry, Young Francis Hi Fi, and Dennis Cometti. There’s a set devoted to a trio of solo artists who have shared the stage countless times over the years (Brad Marino, Geoff Palmer, and Kurt Baker), and who always seem to have new records right around the same time. We also have a sneak peak of the upcoming Replacements box set, Tim: Let It Bleed Edition. The “cello version” of “Can’t Hardly Wait” was actually a Paul Westerberg demo with Twin/Tone secretary Michelle Kinney on cello. The box set comes out on September 22, and as you may imagine, I…ok, I won’t go with the obvious […]

Generally speaking, when I do shows devoted to years of the past I go way back. Like, at the bare minimum 25 years, and as far back as 50 years. Looking at my shows from 2013, though, I decided tonight I’d do something a little different. Let’s go through some of my favorite records from only ten years ago. While I am one that believes there’s great rock and roll released each and every years (despite what many of my fellow oldsters proclaim), 2013 was even better than usual. There’s all sorts of lofi indie power pop from the likes of Mind Spiders, Bad Sports, and Fidlar. There’s the discovery of a wonderful up and coming songwriter named Lydia Loveless. There’s the second release by the reformed Superchunk (my favorite record of the year). And, of course, there’s also the return of The Replacements. Yes, this happened due to a tragedy, as Slim Dunlap had suffered a stroke the previous year. But what a joy to hear Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson quickly recording a handful of their favorite oldies. Even better was the Songs For Slim singles series which saw all kinds of Slim’s friends recording their favorite Dunalp […]

Wronger finds Cowboys in the Campfire embracing the sort of stripped down twangy Americana such band name suggests. It's the latest left turn in a career full of them. Tommy Stinson's musical career began in his pre-teen years, courtesy of bass gifted by older brother, Bob. Joined by Paul Westerberg and Chris Mars, The Replacements would ultimately become one the 80s most influential acts. In the years since the band's 2021 dissolution, Stinson has gone on to play with Guns N' Roses and Soul Asylum, while pursuing his own solo ambitions. Hosted on Acast. Hannah is back from a three-day weekend up at Sugarloaf, thanks to the efforts of our friendly booksellers, and ready to talk books, such as "Rough Sleepers," next month's book club pick — because book club is back! Three people showed up to talk "Noor" (it's not just for employees!). But we quickly transition to a discussion of workplace novels like "Homebodies" (you're late! It's 9:02) and "Everything's Fine," which have Hannah remembering her most-recent mean boss and Sam regretting his life choices in general. To that end, Tom Hanks' workplace is the movie set, and his new book is for sure a "love letter to moviemaking," though that doesn't land for Sam, who doesn't love movies, but the comic books that are tucked into the text land pretty well. Then we finish up with a discussion of "It. Goes. So. Fast.," which has Hannah weeping in the car while Sam wonders about the infantalizing of children, and "Girlfriend on Mars," which is way more bleak than Sam was expecting given Emily St. John Mandel's awesome blurb. Maybe we're transcending '90s cynicism finally? Though "Heart-Shaped Box" is a Nirvana song, and the Paul Westerberg song that Hannah heard is actually "Dyslexic Heart," and Sam, per usual, has misremembered.
