On 3 June 1998, a stone carving of Native American warrior Crazy Horse's face was unveiled in South Dakota.It is 27m tall and is part of a much larger sculpture showing the Native American warrior riding a horse and pointing towards the sacred Black Hills. When finished, it will be the largest mountain carving in the world.Crazy Horse helped defeat the US Army in 1876 at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.The granite memorial was started by Korczak Ziolkowski in 1948 after being asked by Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear to carve a likeness of the warrior out of a mountain.After Korczak's death, his family continued the project.Daughter Monique Ziolkowski is the memorial's artistic and historical adviser.She tells Jen Dale what it was like to help drill, blast and carve the mountain into the likeness of Crazy Horse.This programme contains outdated language.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Någon gång mellan klockan fem och halv sex på eftermiddagen den 26 juni 1876 mötte 210 soldater ur US 7th Cavalry sitt öde på höjderna ovanför Little Big Horn River i nordöstra Montana.Ledda av sin legendariske chef generalen Custer stupade kavalleristerna i en strid mot en överlägsen mängd Cheyenne- och Sioux-krigare. Ytterligare 40 kavallerister stupade denna dag inför övermakten. The Battle of the Little Bighorn didn't end when George Armstrong Custer fell. Four miles to the south, the surviving seven companies of the 7th Cavalry, under Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen, were pinned down on a barren hilltop and fighting for their lives. A battle that would result in two days of thirst, sniping, desperate charges, and over two dozen Medals of Honor. We'll also discuss Dr. Henry Porter's makeshift field hospital, the rescue by General Terry and Colonel Gibbon, and the burial of the dead. The Battle of the Little Bighorn is one of the most famous and most misunderstood events in American history. On June 25, 1876, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and roughly 210 men of his immediate command were wiped out along a ridge in southeastern Montana by a massive village of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho fighting under Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. But how did Custer really die? Did he go down fighting, was he killed trying to reach the river, or did he take his own life to avoid capture? And did the warriors who killed him even know who he was? Tyler Anbinder traces the migration of Irish families beyond New York City. The Lynch family, for instance, saved money for a decade before moving to Minnesota to establish farms on affordable government land, creating vibrant Irishenclaves in the wilderness. In the West, Irish immigrant Edmund Butler became a prominent military figure, leading troops against Crazy Horse after the Battle of Little Bighorn. In California, the Ruddick family moved from gold mining into real estate, eventually becoming successful landlords. The second season of All One Song rolls. Throughout seasons one and two, we've jumped from era to era, from style to style, from album to album. But no one has had the guts yet to tackle one of Neil's true masterpieces, his most visionary set of lyrics, his most powerful statement. That's right, friends, we're talking about “T-Bone.”  Released in 1981 on Re*ac*tor, “T-Bone” is perhaps the most boneheaded, monomaniacal tune in Neil's entire discography, a grinding, nine-minute three-chord Crazy Horse jam that features only these words to guide us: “Got mashed potatoes, ain't got no T-bone.” Our guest today is far from boneheaded, however. Matthew Specktor is a novelist, a memoirist, a critic, a screenwriter, an editor and much more. His most recent pieces of nonfiction, Always Crashing the Same Car and The Golden Hour are fascinating blends of autobiography, Hollywood history, cultural criticism and more. And oh yeah, he also happens to be Willie Nelson's kid.  Micah's work with Neil stretches beyond music; as we get into in our conversation, he was the creative force behind the recent Trans animated film, which brought Young's misunderstood 1982 LP to life. Micah also makes music on his own under the Particle Kid moniker, and he's currently working on a new, artists-first streaming and social media platform called The Flow. For his All One Song appearance, Micah selected “Change Your Mind.” This 14-plus-minute tune from 1994's Sleeps With Angels is a rich text, and one that Micah feels a strong personal connection, as you'll hear this week on All One Song.

John Colleen moved to Buffalo to work for the railroad, eventually seeing his children become successful lawyers and police captains. In Minnesota, Peter Lynch and his family worked for ten years in New York to save enough to purchase cheap government land, eventually building a thriving Irish farming enclave in a largely German region. Others, such as Edmund Butler, pursued careers in the U.S. Army, where he notably fought in the Indian Wars and played a pivotal role in the defeat of Crazy Horse in Montana. 72890 TIPERARY

Go over to ReclinerNotes.com.   For his All One Song appearance, Scott picked a truly deep cut: “Boom Boom Boom.” This is a song that you might know better … though not much better…as “She's A Healer,” which closed out Neil's 2002 LP Are You Passionate?, recorded with Booker T and the MG's. But “Boom Boom Boom” is the original Crazy Horse version of the song, which was cut in the year 2000. It collected dust (or rust?) in the vaults for more than two decades, but eventually showed up as a highlight of Toast, the legendary lost Neil and Crazy Horse album that was finally released in 2022. It's all a little confusing … and hopefully our conversation doesn't muddy the waters even further.  But “Boom Boom Boom” is a good reminder that there are so many different and diverse eras of Neil's career; some may be more fruitful and enjoyable than others, but the journey itself is the point. As we look back over 60-plus years of output, it's a blast to put the pieces of the puzzle together, to see what weird pictures emerge.

Today's episode is about a song that was written just up the hill from where I was born and in the same town where my wife and and I were wed. So it most definitely “strikes close to home.” Neil Young had emerged from the great north woods of Canada into the public limelight in the mid–1960s. He joined up with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay to create the Buffalo Springfield, an LA-based band that asked the musical question “Stop, hey, what's that sound” before disintegrating – but not before Young himself had quit and rejoined the band several times. Then, in 1969, he made a self-titled solo album that had great songs, including “The Loner,” (one of my personal favorites) but which didn't sell well. And then Young really came into his own. His second solo album got him some much needed publicity, and he hit a creative chord with an ensemble of garage musicians that he dubbed Crazy Horse. His next stop was to sign on with Crosby, Stills, and Nash (wherein he added his own last name to the group) and played the Woodstock festival with them. His participation in the CSNY album Deja Vu brought him both acclaim and paychecks, which he used to purchase a sprawling ranch in the mountains of the San Francisco Bay Area.  One day, Young took a ride around his newly purchased estate with the property's caretaker, who was at least forty years older than Young at the time. The two men had a long conversation, and the result of that little open-air chat became the basis of one of Young's most enduring acoustic songs. TRUMP Warsh has compared Bitcoin favorably to gold as a “sustainable store of value,” indicating a positive view of gold’s role in the financial system.  However, his nomination led to sharp declines in gold and silver prices (e.g., silver fell up to 26% in one day), as markets interpreted him as an inflation hawk who might pursue tighter monetary policy, reducing the appeal of precious metals as inflation hedges.  This reaction stemmed from fears of less dovish Fed actions, which had previously driven gold’s rally amid uncertainty over Fed independence.  Warsh’s broader hawkish stance on inflation aligns with “hard money” principles that could indirectly support gold, but his emphasis on shrinking the Fed’s balance sheet and normalizing policy suggests he prioritizes institutional reform over promoting gold as a standard. Is Kevin Warsh Pro-Sound Money?Yes, Warsh is a strong advocate for sound money principles, emphasizing disciplined, anti-inflationary monetary policy. He views inflation as a “monetary phenomenon” and “a choice” driven by excessive government printing and spending.  As a former Fed Governor, he was often the most hawkish voice, opposing aggressive rate cuts during crises due to inflation risks.  He criticizes the Fed’s “mission creep,” oversized balance sheet, and reliance on quantitative easing (QE), arguing these enable fiscal irresponsibility and distort markets. Warsh calls for “regime change” at the Fed, shifting away from Keynesian models toward rules-based policy that incorporates money supply considerations and reduces interventionism. He stresses credibility, clear rules, and accountability to maintain sound money.   In a 2025 Hoover Institution paper, he advocated scrutinizing monetary policy under a framework that could include constitutional measures for prosperity and idea diffusion. Warsh has been vocal against Powell’s leadership, echoing Trump’s frustrations with high interest rates and calling for “regime change” at the Fed. He has moderated his hawkish stance to support lower rates, arguing AI-driven productivity allows growth without inflation. Credibility and Market Reassurance: Warsh is seen as a “traditional” pick with Fed experience, reassuring investors amid fears of a loyalist appointment that could undermine independence. Trump highlighted Warsh’s ability to deliver lower rates and growth, though some economists note Warsh’s independence could lead to tensions if he prioritizes data over demands. Epstein later commented on the Paris erotic show email, writing: “This is pretty bad and might have been the cause of her bad mail in paris.”—apparently referring to Melinda. Nikolic appeared unhappy about being fired while potentially being used as a scapegoat, and he sought greater financial compensation as he prepared to leave and launch his own investment fund. In these emails, Epstein—writing as Nikolic—references alleged knowledge of Gates's extramarital affairs, STDs allegedly contracted from Russian women, and drug use as justification for why Nikolic deserved more money. Taken together, it appears Jeffrey Epstein was drafting or shaping a message for Boris Nikolic that effectively functioned as blackmail, pressuring Bill Gates for financial compensation. It remains unclear whether Nikolic ultimately sent these messages to Gates. However, later emails suggest Gates helped Nikolic launch his next investment fund and maintained a working relationship with him afterward. Documents from this massive release show the close ties between LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and the late pedophile.
