Just before Canadian Jews gather to observe the New Year on Wednesday, the federal government has announced some long-requested changes to a program that has helped nearly 500 synagogues, schools and community centres pay for panic buttons, security cameras, fencing and other vital safety equipment to date. Until now, Jewish leaders have long complained that Public Safety Canada's Security Infrastructure Program (SIP) had too much red tape and hasn't covered nearly enough of the financial burden for keeping Jews safe to worship, study and play–especially in the face of rising antisemitism. The new program–now called Canada Community Security Program–may also have more money to hand out, although how much is unclear. Ottawa said $65 million. and $16 million this year. Most importantly, Ottawa says it will now pay 70 percent of the costs to install security equipment, up from 50 per cent. And the same goes for hiring temporary security guards from Sept. 24, 2024, until after the High Holidays have ended. Daycare centres, cemeteries and Jewish offices are now also eligible to apply. Ottawa will also raise the cap to fund big reno projects from $100,000 to $1.5 million. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we find out why some Jewish leaders are already calling the government announcement a “game-changer.” We speak with Jason Murray, head of the security advisory committee for Vancouver's Jewish federation; Gary Gladstone, a consultant to many Jewish groups applying for these grants; and Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, Canada's special advisor to the Prime Minister on antisemitism, who has been advocating for these changes. What we talked about When Montreal's Jewish Community Council asked Ottawa to fix the SIP program after school shootings post-Oct. 7, in The CJN. Read the federal government's announcement on Sept 24, 2024 outlining changes to the Security Infrastructure Program, now called the Canada Community Security Program. After Vancouver's Schara Tzedeck synagogue was lit aflame, the congregation left the burned front doors unfixed for a long time. Here's why on The CJN Daily. Arterra Winery owned by Founder & winegrower Jason Murray believes in producing wine that is reflective of the grape from which it is grown. Thus, he uses only native yeasts, neutral barrels, and screw caps for bottle enclosure. He feels that when you have a bottle of Arterra you will taste exactly what the grape gave him that vintage and nothing else. After 20 years of growing grapes in Fauquier County in Northern Virginia he is guided by the philosophy that if you plant the grape vine in the best site in the vineyard and give the grape the attention and care it deserves it will reward you with a wine that is a clean and a pure expression of his vineyard and the grape itself. Jason is an introspective and deep-thinking farmer with over 20 years' experience growing wine grapes in Fauquier County and continues to strive to produce wine that speaks of the terroir from which it is grown. He has a special affinity for growing and producing Tannat and Petit Verdot. From what I have tasted he is right at the top here in Virginia with those varietals. Along the way he became intrigued by the Norton Grape and is becoming quickly a leader in producing some of the most interesting and compelling Norton wines I have had.Take a listen to the Audio or read the transcript to learn for yourself how Jason approaches producing Norton wines. All nine U.S. Supreme Court justices challenged constitutional arguments for removing former President Donald Trump from Colorado's 2024 presidential primary ballot during arguments before the court on Thursday. During arguments scheduled to last 80 minutes, the justices spent almost 130 minutes listening to and questioning three attorneys: Jonathan Mitchell representing Trump, Jason Murray representing six Colorado Republicans who filed suit last year to remove the former president from the ballot, and Shannon Stevenson representing the Colorado secretary of state. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/america-in-focus/support
It's Friday, February 9th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Muslims kill 14-year-old Christian teen Pakistani Muslim gunmen shouting threats against Christians shot a 14-year-old Christian dead on Monday, February 5th, reports Morning Star News. Sunil Masih and other Christians were standing in a market in the Mandiala Warraich area of Punjab Province when six Muslim men, armed with pistols, arrived on motorcycles and opened fire on them, said the slain boy's uncle, Mehboob Gill. He said, “We were talking to each other when suddenly Zaman Butt and his accomplices Anas Yaseen, Adil Rehman, Ashraf Ullah and two unidentified men came there on motorcycles. Adil shouted that no Christian in the area should be left alive, after which Zaman opened fire on Sunil with his pistol, hitting him in the chest.” Yaseen shot at another Christian boy, identified only as Jamshed, with the bullet only grazing him. The uncle said, “We rushed Sunil to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his bullet wound before doctors could begin their treatment,” adding that his nephew was an eighth-grade student whose father, George Masih, works at a local car shop. Pakistan ranks seventh on Open Doors' 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian. In Acts 22:4, Paul confessed, “I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison.” If Jesus Christ can convert Saul, please pray that He converts these Pakistani Muslims who are killing Christians. Israel says over a fifth of Hamas hostages are dead Israeli intelligence officers have concluded that more than one-fifth of the 136 individuals still held hostage by Hamas in Gaza are dead, reports The Christian Post. The Israeli military confirmed the deaths of at least 30 of the more than 130 remaining hostages, according to a copy of the intelligence report reviewed by the New York Times. While Hamas, the Muslim terrorist group, released several hostages during a temporary ceasefire in November, dozens remain in captivity. Another Biden gaffe In an appearance in Las Vegas, President Joe Biden confused French President Emmanuel Macron with the late French President François Mitterand who was the president of France between 1981 and 1995 and died in 1996. Listen. BIDEN: “Right, right, right after I was elected, I went to what they call a G7 meeting, all the NATO leaders. It was in, it was in the south of England. And I sat down and I said, ‘America is back.' And Mitterand from Germany, I mean from France, looked at me and said, said, ‘You know, why, how long you back for?'” Fox News reporter Peter Doocy raised the issue of Biden's mental competence in a White House Press briefing with Karine Jean-Pierre. DOOCY: “How is President Biden ever going to convince the three-quarters of voters who are worried about his physical and mental health that he is okay, even though in Las Vegas he told a story about recently talking to a French president who died in 1996?” JEAN-PIERRE: “I'm not even going to go down that rabbit hole with you sir.” DOOCY: “What's the rabbit hole? He said he talked to Mitterand?” JEAN-PIERRE: (referring to another reporter) “Go ahead. Go ahead.” Supreme Court skeptical about keeping Trump off ballot And finally, the Supreme Court sounds broadly skeptical of efforts to kick former President Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential election ballot in any of the 50 states, reports the Associated Press. In arguments ticking past 90 minutes Thursday, both conservative and liberal justices raised questions of whether Trump can be disqualified because of his efforts to undo his loss in the 2020 election, ending with the January 6, 2021 rally at the U.S. Capitol. At the heart of the case is a provision in the 14th Amendment preventing those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. Listen to former President Trump's attorney, Jonathan Mitchell. MITCHELL: “The Colorado Supreme Court held that President Donald J. Trump is constitutionally disqualified from serving as president under section three of the 14th Amendment. The Colorado Supreme Court's decision is wrong and should be reversed for numerous independent reasons. The first reason is that President Trump is not covered by section three, because the President is not an officer of the United States as that term is used throughout the Constitution.” Even liberal Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan sounded skeptical about ruling to disqualify Trump from a state's ballot. Listen. KAGAN: “I think that the question that you have to confront is why a single state should decide who gets to be President of the United States. This question of whether a former president is disqualified for insurrection, to be President again, is just say it, it sounds awfully national to me. So, whatever means there are to enforce it would suggest that they have to be federal, national means. “You know, if you weren't from Colorado, and you were from Wisconsin, or you were from Michigan, what the Michigan Secretary of State did is going to make the difference between whether Candidate A is elected or Candidate B is elected. I mean, that seems quite extraordinary, doesn't it?” Here's the response of Jason Murray, the Denver attorney who successfully persuaded Colorado's top court to declare Trump ineligible to run in that state due to the Constitution's insurrection clause. MURRAY: “No, Your Honor, because ultimately, it's this court that's going to decide that question of federal constitutional eligibility and settle the issue for the nation. And certainly it's not unusual that questions of national importance come up.” KAGAN: “Well, I suppose this court would be saying something along the lines of that a state has the power to do it. But I guess I was asking you to go a little bit further and say, ‘Why should that be the right rule? Why should a single state have the ability to make this determination, not only for their own citizens, but for the rest of the nation?'” MURRAY: “Because Article Two gives them the power to appoint their own electors as they see fit. But if they're going to use a federal constitutional qualification as a ballot access determinant, then it's creating a federal constitutional question that then this Court decides. If this court affirms the decision below, determining that President Trump is ineligible to be president, other states would still have to determine what effect that would have on their own state's law and state procedure.” Eight of the nine justices suggested that they were open to at least some of the arguments made by Jonathan Mitchell, Trump's attorney at the Supreme Court. Trump could win his case if the court finds just one of those arguments persuasive. Only Justice Sonia Sotomayor sounded like she might vote to uphold the Colorado Supreme Court ruling that found that Trump “engaged in insurrection” and is ineligible to be president. The state court ruled Trump should not be on the ballot for the state's Republican primary on March 5th. This Day in Legal History: Jamaican Independence On this day in legal history, February 9, 1962, marks a significant milestone for Jamaica as it achieved full independence, breaking away from the Federation of the West Indies. This pivotal moment in Jamaican history was the culmination of a long journey towards sovereignty, reflecting the island nation's desire for self-governance and control over its own destiny. Despite its newfound independence, Jamaica chose to remain a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, signifying a continued, albeit altered, relationship with the United Kingdom. The transition to independence was not merely a political formality but a transformative legal and social shift that laid the foundation for Jamaica's future. As a fully independent nation, Jamaica adopted its own constitution, which established the legal framework for the government and guaranteed the rights and freedoms of its citizens. This constitution reflected Jamaica's unique identity and aspirations, incorporating both the legacy of British legal traditions and the influences of Jamaican culture and values. The decision to remain within the Commonwealth underscored Jamaica's commitment to maintaining ties with other nations that shared a common history and set of values, while also asserting its autonomy on the world stage. This dual approach allowed Jamaica to forge its path in international relations, trade, and legal cooperation, benefiting from the solidarity and support of the Commonwealth network.Jamaica's independence day is not only a celebration of its past struggles for sovereignty but also a recognition of the legal and democratic principles that continue to guide the nation. It serves as a reminder of the importance of self-determination, the rule of law, and the ongoing quest for justice and equality. As Jamaicans reflect on their journey since 1962, they celebrate the resilience and spirit that have defined their nation's history and look forward to a future shaped by their own hands. In the years following independence, Jamaica has made significant strides in developing its legal system, economy, and social structures, striving to address the challenges that face a modern nation while preserving the rich cultural heritage that is uniquely Jamaican. The anniversary of independence is not just a moment to reflect on the past but an opportunity to renew the commitment to building a just, prosperous, and equitable society for all Jamaicans. The recent affirmation of the suspension of 96-year-old Federal Circuit Judge Pauline Newman has sparked debate over the ethics laws governing the evaluation of federal judges for potential disability and misconduct. This decision, upheld by the US Judicial Conference's Committee on Conduct and Disability, marks only the third written decision in over three years by the panel, emphasizing the rarity of such actions. The Committee found no error in the investigation led by Chief Judge Kimberly A. Moore, indicating thorough compliance with procedural standards. However, this has led to discussions about whether the deference shown to the Judicial Council's decision was appropriate, particularly in the context of suspending an Article III judge.Legal experts are divided on the matter. While some, like Professor Arthur Hellman of the University of Pittsburgh, suggest that the standard of review might need to be more stringent when suspending a judge appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, others like Professor Paul Gugliuzza of Temple Law School see the Committee's deferential standard as fitting within typical appellate review practices. The case has also highlighted concerns over how the judiciary handles investigations of its own, with some arguing that there is generally too much deference to judges investigating peers, yet acknowledging that the Newman case is an example of the judiciary attempting accountability.Aliza Shatzman, from the Legal Accountability Project, pointed out broader issues related to the aging federal judiciary and the silence often maintained by judicial clerks and employees due to fear of reputational damage. The Newman case involved complaints from a former judicial assistant and a clerk about being assigned personal tasks, which Judge Newman allegedly dismissed as insignificant.Jeremy Fogel, a retired federal judge, suggested that the judiciary lacks a sophisticated system for assessing judges' cognitive functions, leading to ad hoc and confrontational situations. He proposed a regular assessment protocol to avoid personal conflicts and ensure fair evaluations. The controversy surrounding Judge Newman's suspension underscores the need for a more refined system to address the challenges posed by an aging judiciary, balancing the need for accountability with respect for the complexities of judicial service.Judge Newman's Upheld Suspension Has Some Questioning Ethics LawAt the U.S. Supreme Court, former President Donald Trump's legal challenge against being disqualified from the Colorado ballot for his alleged role in the 2021 Capitol insurrection appeared likely to succeed. During the proceedings, justices from both conservative and liberal wings expressed skepticism toward the argument that Trump could be removed from the ballot under the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals who engaged in insurrection against the U.S. from holding office. The case, triggered by a Colorado court's decision, has significant implications for the 2024 presidential election, where Trump is a leading Republican contender. The justices grappled with the application of the 14th Amendment's Section 3, questioning whether a state could unilaterally impact the national election outcome by disqualifying a presidential candidate. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Elena Kagan highlighted the potential for a few states to dictate election results, emphasizing the national scope of presidential eligibility. Meanwhile, Justice Brett Kavanaugh pointed out the democratic principle of allowing people to choose their candidates, suggesting that disqualifying Trump could disenfranchise voters. The attorney for the plaintiffs, Jason Murray, argued that Trump's actions to undermine the 2020 election results justified his disqualification, whereas Trump's lawyer, Jonathan Mitchell, contended that even if a candidate admitted to insurrection, Section 3 would allow them to run and potentially win, leaving any sanctions to post-election congressional action.Trump, speaking in Florida, expressed confidence in the Supreme Court and his legal arguments, viewing the case as part of a broader attempt to exclude him from the ballot. This Supreme Court case echoes the institution's critical role in the 2000 presidential election, with the justices revisiting historical precedents to interpret Section 3's enforcement. The debate also touched on the nature of the January 6 Capitol riot, with Mitchell asserting it was a riot rather than an insurrection, a point challenged by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. The case underscores the complex interplay between constitutional law, electoral politics, and the judiciary's role in adjudicating disputes that have far-reaching consequences for American democracy.Trump ballot disqualification bid gets skeptical US Supreme Court reception | ReutersGenesis Global, a cryptocurrency lender, has reached a settlement in a lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James, marking a significant step in resolving its legal challenges amid bankruptcy proceedings. The lawsuit, filed last year by James, accused Genesis, along with its parent company Digital Currency Group (DCG) and the crypto firm Gemini Trust Co, of defrauding investors out of over $1 billion through the Gemini Earn program. This program allowed customers to lend their crypto assets to Genesis in return for interest. The settlement, pending approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, entails Genesis agreeing to halt its business operations within New York state. This development follows closely on the heels of Genesis settling another lawsuit with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission concerning the same Earn program. As part of that settlement, Genesis agreed to a $21 million fine, contingent upon its ability to fully reimburse its customers during the bankruptcy process. These legal resolutions represent a crucial phase for Genesis as it navigates through bankruptcy, aiming to alleviate its legal entanglements and financial obligations. The outcomes of these settlements could significantly impact Genesis's future operations and its efforts to address the claims of its creditors and customers. Bankrupt Genesis Global settles NY Attorney General's lawsuit | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Luigi Boccherini. Born on February 19, 1743, in Lucca, Italy, Boccherini was a distinguished composer and cellist of the Classical era, celebrated for his significant contributions to chamber music. His rich musical legacy is characterized by elegance, lyrical beauty, and the sophisticated use of the cello, an instrument he profoundly mastered and elevated in the classical music canon. Boccherini's extensive body of work includes over one hundred string quintets, quartets, and trios, alongside numerous symphonies and concertos. Despite his substantial output and unique style, Boccherini's compositions were somewhat overshadowed by his contemporaries, such as Haydn and Mozart. However, his works have gained increased recognition and appreciation over time for their inherent grace, inventiveness, and the delicate balance he achieved between melodic and harmonic elements, marking him as a pivotal figure in the development of chamber music in the Classical period. He is said to have evolved chamber music from the format developed by Haydn, elevating the cello to an equal place with the violin and viola. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument in Trump v. Anderson—a case which will determine whether Colorado has the authority to deem Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump constitutionally ineligible to appear on the state's presidential ballot. In one notable exchange, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson questioned Jason Murray, the attorney representing a group of Colorado voters attempting to remove Trump from the ballot. Referencing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, Justice Jackson stated of the amendment's authors: “They were listing people who were barred [from office under the 14th Amendment] and president is not there.” According to most analysis, based upon questioning, it appears as though liberal justices Jackson and Elena Kagan will side with conservative justices for a lopsided decision rejecting claims that Trump is disqualified from holding elected office under the U.S. Constitution. 3:20pm- The Department of Justice's Special Counsel will not seek criminal charges against President Joe Biden for mishandling classified documents. Glenn Thrush of The New York Times writes: “The special counsel investigating President Biden said in a report released on Thursday that he had decided not to seek prosecution of Mr. Biden over his handling of classified material after leaving the vice presidency in early 2017, but had found evidence that Mr. Biden willfully retained and disclosed some sensitive material. The report said that Mr. Biden had left the White House after his vice presidency with classified documents about Afghanistan and notebooks with handwritten entries ‘implicating sensitive intelligence sources and methods' taken from internal White House briefings. Robert K. Hur, the special counsel, said in his report that Mr. Biden had shared the notebooks with a ghostwriter who helped him on his 2017 memoir, ‘Promise Me, Dad.'” You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/08/us/biden-documents-special-counsel.html 3:40pm- During oral argument in Trump v. In a report, Robert Hur concluded that Biden ‘willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen.' But he declined to issue any charges, in part because Biden's poor recollection would make him hard to convict.” At one point in the report, Hur explains: “In his interview with our office, Mr. Biden's memory was worse. He did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended (‘if it was 2013 – when did I stop being Vice President?'), and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began (‘in 2009, am I still Vice President?'). He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died. And his memory appeared hazy when describing the Afghanistan debate that was once so important to him.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/special-counsel-account-of-bidens-mental-decline-is-frightening/ 5:30pm- Listeners react to Special Counsel Robert K. Sometimes it feels like there's an assumption that to shift our current exploitative and divided relationship with the land, we have to be different than we are, adopt a certain lifestyle aesthetic… so I'm super excited for this conversation with winemaker Jason Murray and artist Sandy Gray-Murray of Arterra Wines and Hawkmoth Arts, two people who epitomize lifestyle, not as aesthetic but as conscious choice; as act of reverence for the land and beauty - all by staying true to what they feel is theirs to do and be in the world. In a nod to my earlier conversation (ep 5) with Dr. Shanequa Smith, Jason says, “we feel we are trying to build new systems. It's not easy.” And it's true. This conversation is both inspiring and sobering - honoring the beauty of life without shying away from the challenges we face as humans at this time, and particularly as humans trying to be the change we want to see in the world. In it you'll hear us explore: the difference between art, craft, and artisan - between product, process, and consumption; how staying on your path requires shutting out the noise (and one of the most helpful tools for when the noise gets loud); making tough, imperfect choices when it comes to sustainability and finding your ‘right' way; concrete examples of how Jason and Sandy live their values through the craft and process of their work; why sourcing your choices from beauty and the land is such a revolutionary act… and more. You may hear things you agree with, you may hear things that challenge you. You may hear things that are out of your daily experience and don't slot easily into your current understanding. But as Jason says towards the end of the episode: “If you don't, are you even talking?” Gather with us? Forge a new path with us? Celebrate beauty with us? I hope you will. The world needs the biodiversity that is all of us. Many of the concepts we have about work assume that it is a necessary evil. Work is bad and life is good, and therefore we should aim for minimal time spent working and maximal time at leisure. This is the assumption embedded in the “work-life balance” model. In this first episode of How People Work, Fringe co-founders Jordan Peace and Jason Murray challenge this way of thinking. They explore the history of how people have thought about work, what we stand to gain if we view it as inherently good, and how this mindset led them to start Fringe. Key ideas and highlights “Work should be a good thing. This notion of how we work as humans, but also how we apply ourselves to work, is something that ought to be investigated and talked about. And it's relevant to what we're doing here with Fringe because we're trying to very much build a company in which people can feel that they do good work and that the work is good for them and good for their lives and their families.” — Jason Murray Before, people viewed work as a transactional relationship between employer and employee. In exchange for labor, employees received wages. Now, employees expect to find meaning, purpose, and belonging at work. This transition was fueled by the expansion of benefits that extend beyond the quid pro quo arrangement of the past—health insurance added in the 1940s, 401(k)s in the ‘70s, and more recent perks like remote work in the 2020s. The problem with the current benefits landscape is that almost all benefits are future-oriented. You reap their reward later on, especially when you're sick, dead, or retired. The next development in the evolution: benefits that meet the everyday needs of employees, such as child care, mental health support, student loan repayment, or even food delivery. Employers that offer benefits that their employees can use in their daily life are best positioned to drive recruiting and retention efforts.
Welcome to the How People Work podcast, where we explore the intersection of how humans think and act and how they apply themselves to their work. The future of shipping and e-commerce could be said to be the future of retail. Creating value in the sometimes disconnected supply chain process helps retailers offer fast, free, and on-time shipping delivery, which is often an area that is overlooked due to its complexity. We discussed this with The CEO of Shipium, Jason Murray, who, after 19 years at Amazon, where he spent most of his time as a VP building the tech stack powering Prime, went on to create Shipium. This premier shipping platform brings shipping and shopping together to improve sales.Modern e-commerce companies turn to Shipium when they want to increase revenue, improve loyalty, and decrease costs by adding new technology.#retail #shipping #supplychain #nrf2023#RETAIL https://www.theretailpod.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theretailpodcast/message

Arterra Winery was founded by Jason Murray in 2013. Jason is a veteran of winegrowing in Northern Virginia for over 20 years. Arterra, which means "Art of the Land" represents Jason's quest to grow wine in a fashion unseen by most of us in the wine business. His Marketing moniker is " Clean Wine." When I first heard that I didn't really understand if it was yet another take on "Natural Wine". I learned in my interview that it is much more than that.Essentially, as Jason describes it simply, he tends his vineyard with the least amount of intervention possible. His wines are meant to reflect the vintage, what the vineyard gives him is what is in the wine. Ultimately sealed in Stelvin tin lined screw caps to preserve that character. No new oak is used and no additives or corrections to the wine are added or employed to do anything to adjust the character that the grapes give him in any given vintage. It is a very intriguing interview and tasting is believing. After trying several of his wines I would tell you that the wines back up his story. You should check them out for yourself and be the judge. Listen to the Episode below or read the edited transcript.

Today I'm joined by Shipium, a powerhouse logistics tech company who are on a mission to modernize the ecommerce supply chain, and help you turn logistics into a strategic differentiator for growth. Shipium coordinates previously disconnected supply chain steps to help retailers offer fast, free, and on-time shipping. Founded by Jason Murray and Mac Brown, two supply chain veterans from Amazon and Zulily, Shipium is the premium shipping platform for ecommerce retail. Today Jason Murray, Co-Founder and CEO at Shipium, joins me to chat all about the company and what they do; the ‘Amazon Prime problem'; using data modeling to power better decision-making; and why, by adopting a few modern principles, every ecommerce business can compete in today's economy. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [07.49] Jason's long-standing career at Amazon, and how his experiences led him to co-found Shipium. “When you're using technology to solve real-world problems – that's what I love… and it allowed me to develop my thoughts around ‘how do you run an efficient ecommerce process?'” [12.17] An overview of Shipium – what they do and how they help their customers. “Expectations have changed, it's not the same world we were in… people have options and make decisions based on price and product, but it's also – ‘how fast am I going to get that?'” [15.19] How ecommerce has changed over the last decade, and the different stages that have defined its evolution. “There's always this tension between what people want, and what's sustainable.” [19.05] The next stage of the ecommerce evolution, and the role that home delivery will increasingly play in successful business strategies. “The shipping experience is half of the shopping experience!” [21.08] The technology behind the Shipium platform, and a closer look at the onboarding and implementation process. “We're using data to make a lot of these decisions, that were previously hard-coded rules.” [24.28] The ideal client for Shipium. [25.32] How Shipium helps businesses to implement an affordable, fast shipping program, leading to an average 5-10% improvement in conversion and 5-15% improvement on shipping costs. “Businesses come to us and say: ‘we're losing business to Amazon.'” [27.59] From expansion to collaboration, the future for Shipium. In the middle of a pandemic, the issue of police brutality bubbled to the surface, again. As protests broke out all over the world, they led to a broader conversation about Black lives, Indigenous lives, and the experiences of people of colour. It finally feels like diversity and inclusion for members of historically underrepresented groups is gaining momentum...but it's just a start. There's so much more work to be done as workplaces become more and more diverse. In this episode, we explore how you can contribute to a welcoming environment of diversity, inclusion and belonging. How to identify systemic racism. How to tell if a progressive company is addressing it properly. How to recognize and confront one's own unconscious biases. And how to be an ally to colleagues from underrepresented groups. Dantley Davis, Chief Design Officer at Twitter, describes his approach to inclusive recruiting; Tina Opie, Professor of Management at Babson College, outlines how colleagues at all levels can listen to and learn from each other. Aneeta Rattan, Professor of Organizational Behaviour at London Business School, shares her research on the impact of a growth mindset on D&I. Jason Murray, Head of BIPOC Executive Search, provides insight into microagressions against colleagues from undererpresented groups. Krystal Abotossaway, a Senior Diversity Inclusion Sourcing Parter at TD, reveals how companies can provide a more culturally aware environment for employees. And Dolly Chugh, Professor at NYU Stern School of Business, author of The Person You Mean To Be and writer of the Dear Good People newsletter, teaches us about unconscious bias and its influence on systemic racism as well as how to be a "good-ish person" and ally. As a native of Utah, Jason grew up visiting the National Parks, Monuments, and other regions throughout the Western United States. That is where he first fell in love with the history and geology of the area. As he grew up, he continued to enrich his education and knowledge at nature camps and class trips throughout the Southwest. One of his favorite trips was down to Havasupai Falls and the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Even when he attended college in California, he continued to enjoy the diverse geological and ecological environments nearby. He has enjoyed camping, hiking, backpacking, and touring throughout the west for the last 20 years. One of his greatest loves is sharing his passion for the history, geology, and beauty of the Southwestern United States with the tours he hosts. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Jason about his experience building an adventure tour operation from scratch over the past six years. With tours running all over the southwestern United States (and now in Oregon!) it’s all about relationship-building. From customers to guides, to all those involved with making these unique experiences happen, building relationship and building trust have been the key to success. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Tips for hiring the best client-facing employees How to create an environment of constant improvement Staying connected to customers as you grow The little things you can do to create “Wow!” experiences Building great relationships with DMOs and vendors Why trust is such a crucial ingredient to success in this business From Point A to Point B For large tours on the open road, there is a ready solution: buses made specifically for the travel industry. For smaller group tours, Jason was not finding the right mode of transportation. Bench seats in an Econoline might work for very short distances, but not for a 5 to 12-day trip. Through dedication, research, and customization, Jason finally found the right van and now the comfort of travel is remarked on by customers almost as much as the destinations. That kind of attention to customer experience can set your company apart from the competition. When you’re in a business where the journey is literally as important as the destination, everything that happens between point A and points B becomes important. Navigating the Travel Ecosystem As a tour operator, Jason relies on DMOs for information and broader marketing initiatives. He relies on service providers like river rafting companies and glamping outfitters – who could easily undercut him and steal customers away. It all comes down to trust. That’s why developing relationships is important, from customers to all the players in the travel ecosystem. When you know and trust each other, the opportunity to cooperate gives everyone a fair shake. Wrestling for the same clientele can be nerve-wracking, but you have to put yourself out there and find the people and organizations that are a good fit.
