Death in Paradise: An Illustrated History of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner :Brad Schreiber

The Opperman Report

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 15, 2025 119:57 Transcription Available

Unnatural celebrity deaths and unnaturally celebrated murders pockmark the history of Los Angeles, looming as large in the public imagination as the Hollywood stars themselves. Death in Paradise is the first authorized history of the Los Angeles Coroner's Office, revisiting the most culturally significant and forensically complex cases of accidental death, suicide or murder of the famous. It documents the notorious deaths of Senator Robert Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Tate, Janis Joplin and many others, providing an unflinching view of Tinseltown's dark, even perverse underbelly.Brad Schreiber, who wrote the original hardcover for book packager Tony Blanche, has updated many of the fascinating cases in Death in Paradise and added new photographs for this e-book edition. Schreiber, who created the truTV series North Mission Road inspired by this book, also presents some of the lesser-known but most puzzling deaths in the history of Hollywood. Did 1930s comedy film star Thelma Todd accidentally die of carbon monoxide poisoning in her own garage, commit suicide or was she killed by the jealous lover who locked her out of her own house? Death in Paradise highlights the bizarre as well as the renowned. There's the story of a funhouse dummy that got broken during a TV show filming, only to reveal the mummy of a Wild West gunslinger underneath. Or how about the murderer of a woman who was caught, based upon the ingredients in the exotic cocktail found in his victim's stomach? In addition to these mind-bending investigations, Death in Paradise summarizes the surprising origins of early historical medical examiners, the development of forensic science and, of course, the rise of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, the most technologically advanced in the world…and the only one with its own gift shop. https://amzn.to/4mcilYBBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Martin Porter & David Goggin in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.amazon.co.uk/Buzz-Me-Inside-Record-studios/dp/0500028699 Strap yourself in and take a helter-skelter ride through more than a decade's worth of high drama, hedonism, high tech and musical genius as told by the insiders at the heart of Record Plant studios, one of the most prolific recording factories of all time, founded in 1968 by charismatic audio engineer Gary Kellgren and ace businessman Chris Stone. In the 1970s, Record Plant was everywhere there was music. In 1976 alone, the studios produced three No. 1 albums: Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life, The Eagles' Hotel California and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Based on the memoirs and archives of Chris Stone, as well as interviews with over 100 studio employees, music producers and recording artists, Buzz Me In tells the incredible story of Record Plant's evolution and the making of more than a decade's worth of Gold and Platinum albums, tape by tape. Illustrated throughout with behind-the-scenes images, archive photos of artists recording and performing live and album cover art, this revelatory and extensively researched book explores and celebrates the way the studios were designed to cater to every rock'n'roller's fancy. From the living-room-style studio in New York, where Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland was recorded and where John Lennon later encamped, to the VIP clubhouse studio in Los Angeles where Stevie Wonder produced his classic hits, and the destination recording venue in Sausalito where Sly Stone, Bob Marley and Fleetwood Mac holed up, each studio location had its own inherent character – but all showcased the founders' proven formula of combining state-of-the-art audio, fantasy bedrooms and group Jacuzzis with sex, drugs and celebrity jams. Was Record Plant ‘the real Hotel California'?

Part 1 Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss Summary"Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation" by Lynne Truss is a witty and engaging exploration of the importance of punctuation in writing. The book emphasizes how proper punctuation can change the meaning of sentences and affect the clarity of communication.Truss uses the amusing title, derived from a joke about a panda that eats bamboo, shoots (the bamboo), and leaves, to illustrate how punctuation marks can drastically alter interpretations. The book is structured into various chapters that focus on different punctuation marks, including periods, commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, and more, providing historical context, grammatical rules, and humorous anecdotes to highlight common mistakes and misuses.Throughout the text, Truss adopts a light-hearted yet serious tone regarding the decline of punctuation standards in contemporary writing, largely due to the rise of digital communication and informal writing styles. She argues for a return to precision and traditional grammar, emphasizing that punctuation is not just a set of arbitrary symbols but a crucial tool for conveying meaning accurately."Eats, Shoots & Leaves" serves as both a guide and a manifesto for punctuation enthusiasts and those who may be less familiar with grammatical rules. Truss's passion for punctuation shines through, making the subject entertaining and accessible to a wide audience, ultimately advocating for careful and thoughtful writing.Part 2 Eats, Shoots & Leaves AuthorLynne Truss is a British author, journalist, and broadcaster best known for her humorous writing on the subject of grammar and punctuation. Best EditionsEats, Shoots & Leaves has seen several editions, including paperback, hardcover, and special illustrated versions. The 10th Anniversary Edition released in 2013 often receives highlights for its updates and reflections on the decade since the original publication. It typically contains additional commentary and reflections on how language use and punctuation have evolved over the years, making it particularly valuable for readers interested in both the humorous aspects and linguistic education.Overall, Truss's combination of humor and insightful commentary on language has solidified her place in contemporary literature, and Eats, Shoots & Leaves remains her most significant contribution to literature.Part 3 Eats, Shoots & Leaves Chapters"Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss primarily focuses on the importance of punctuation in written language. LAST SHOT IN ANGER: 1/8: Lincoln's Peace: The Struggle to End the American Civil War Hardcover – Illustrated, March 18, 2025  by  Michael Vorenberg   https://www.amazon.com/Lincolns-Peace-Struggle-American-Civil/dp/1524733172 We set out on the James River, March 25, 1865, aboard the paddle steamboat River Queen. President Lincoln is on his way to General Grant's headquarters at City Point, Virginia, and he's decided he won't return to Washington until he's witnessed, or perhaps even orchestrated, the end of the Civil War. Now, it turns out, more than a century and a half later, historians are still searching for that end. Was it April 9, at Appomattox, as conventional wisdom holds, where Lee surrendered to Grant in Wilmer McLean's parlor? Or was it ten weeks afterward, in Galveston, where a federal commander proclaimed Juneteenth the end of slavery? Or perhaps in August of 1866, when President Andrew Johnson simply declared “the insurrection is at an end”? That the answer was elusive was baffling even to a historian of the stature of Michael Vorenberg, whose work served as a key source of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. Vorenbergwas inspired to write this groundbreaking book, finding its title in the peace Lincoln hoped for but could not make before his assassination. A peace that required not one but many endings, as Vorenberg reveals in these pages, the most important of which came well more than a year after Lincoln's untimely death.  To say how a war ends is to suggest how it should be remembered, and Vorenberg's search is not just for the Civil War's endpoint but for its true nature and legacy, so essential to the American identity. It's also a quest, in our age of “forever wars,” to understand whether the United States's interminable conflicts of the current era have a precedent in the Civil War—and whether, in a sense, wars ever end at all, or merely wax and wane.
