Leontes suffers from a kind of paranoia that Shakespeare hints has a psychological origin, but is also a way of talking of “original sin,” the predisposition to see cynically and reductively. Paulina plays the role of female prophet confronting a tyrant king, leaves the newborn child. Leontes commands it be exposed.

I told my wife the Earth might lose gravity this August and proved it by falling down… which she says makes me look dumb, but here we are. My knee still hurts which I am beginning to think is arthritis, there was a squall warning, and I discovered I am fascinated with the corncob buildings in Chicago. I played early‑morning video games with my son and felt young again, then immediately lost my parking spot as I panicked as I thought everyone was watching and noticed I am quickly morphing into a paranoid old man.Check out the podcast and all the fun at www.thedailylifeoffrank.com--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Let's connect! This week on That Tech Pod, Laura and Kevin sit down with Cindy Cohn, Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, to talk about the power structures hiding in plain sight across the internet, money, surveillance, and AI. Cindy breaks down what EFF actually does and why access to the internet is not just an infrastructure problem, but a civil liberties issue that shapes who gets heard, who gets tracked, and who gets left out.We get into how mass surveillance quietly became normal, from license plate readers to cell phone tracking, and why most people would be genuinely shocked if they saw the full picture. We also look ahead at financial surveillance, using Europe's move toward a Digital Euro as a case study, and ask where legitimate oversight ends and control begins. On the AI front, Cindy pushes back on the idea that privacy is already lost, and explains why treating opaque systems as inevitable only benefits the most powerful actors. Cindy makes a clear case that defending digital rights does not require being a technologist or a lawyer. It starts with staying skeptical, asking hard questions, and refusing to accept tools we are not allowed to understand or challenge. That is exactly why this conversation mattered, and why we were so glad to have her on.Cindy Cohn is the Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and previously served as EFF's Legal Director and General Counsel from 2000 to 2015. She has been involved with EFF since 1993, when she served as lead outside counsel in the landmark Bernstein v. U.S. Department of Justice case, a successful First Amendment challenge to U.S. export restrictions on cryptography. Her work has been widely recognized, with honors from Forbes, The National Law Journal, and The NonProfit Times for her influence in technology, law, and civil liberties. She is also the co-host of EFF's podcast, How to Fix the Internet, and the author of Privacy's Defender, published by MIT Press. More information about the book can be found at https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262051248/privacys-defender/

https://gettherapybirmingham.com/the-dark-reflection-adam-curtiss-all-watched-over-by-machines-of-loving-grace/ Why is the most therapy-literate generation in history also the most depressed? This episode traces the hidden history connecting Cold War game theory, a 1964 pop psychology bestseller, and the mental health crisis devastating Gen Z. The thread starts with John Nash—the schizophrenic mathematician who built models assuming all humans are paranoid, self-interested calculators. It runs through Eric Berne's "Games People Play," which taught millions that relationships are just strategic transactions. It continues through Reagan, Thatcher, and the rise of CBT—a therapy model that treats your mind like buggy software. And it ends with a generation drowning in optimization, starving for meaning, and wondering why all their self-knowledge isn't helping. Featuring the tragic story of George Price, the scientist who slit his own throat trying to disprove his equation proving love is just calculation. Plus: why therapists can't legally unionize, how a secret committee of surgeons sets the price of your mental healthcare, and why the "just do it yourself" wellness movement is the final victory of the worldview that broke us. This isn't self-help. This is an autopsy of the assumptions we've been living inside. Topics covered: Game theory and psychology, Eric Berne transactional analysis, Adam Curtis The Trap, John Nash Beautiful Mind, CBT criticism, Gen Z mental health crisis, Theodore Porter Trust in Numbers, neoliberalism and therapy, Rosenhan experiment, C. Thi Nguyen gamification, purpose vs point, George Price equation, Wilhelm Reich, depth psychology, mental health policy More @ https://gettherapybirmingham.com/

Episode 99: Ty Dolla $ign. One of the only artists to earn TWO diamond records in the last decade, Ty Dolla $ign joins us for a deep, musician-to-musician conversation about a career built on trust, taste, and timeless records. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Ty grew up surrounded by live music through his father, musician Tyrone Griffin Sr. of Lakeside, learning instruments at a young age and developing a deep respect for musicianship before fame ever entered the picture. In this interview, Ty breaks down his journey from South Central LA to becoming one of the most trusted collaborators in modern music. We talk through the early days of Beach House, the breakout impact of “Paranoid” and “Or Nah” with DJ Mustard, and how songwriting and features like “Loyal" and “Psycho” helped shape his rise. Ty reflects on the making of Free TC, the emotional weight behind the album, and carrying his brother with him throughout his career. Ty opens up about working across genres, collaborating with artists like The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Skrillex, YG, Wiz Khalifa, Terrace Martin, Kanye, and more. We talk his songwriting and production process, and how he approaches features musically, treating voices like instruments and focusing on frequency, tone, and feel over star power. We also dive into his role as a label co-founder with EZMNY Records, signing and developing Leon Thomas, and witnessing Leon's rapid rise from artist development to Grammy-nominated albums (Electric Dusk and Mutt). Ty shares his philosophy on mentorship, artist development, long term friendships, women, and building a label rooted in belief and musicianship. We get into Vultures, creative collaboration at scale, returning to solo work with Tycoon, and what longevity, growth, and being a “musician first” really mean to him today. This is an honest, in-depth look at Ty Dolla $ign's career. The hits, the craft, the relationships, and the long game. I hope you enjoy episode 99. Lets go!! Dr. John Gartner joins Joanna Coles to explain why Donald Trump's worsening paranoia, erratic behavior, and visible health problems point to a dangerous mix of malignant narcissism and possible frontotemporal dementia. Drawing on clinical practice and the shift toward observable diagnostic criteria, Gartner argues that Trump's public performances reveal more than enough: the “25th time” fixation, the aspirin theories, the right-side weakness, and the drifting, rambling speeches. The conversation ends with a stark question: What happens when a country is governed by a man whose greatest vulnerability is his own deteriorating mind? Hosted on Acast. Happy holidays, everyone! -- -- Earlier this year, a spate of news stories told of chatbot users travelling through the looking-glass right into Conspirituality. Paranoid conspiracies, spiritual awakenings, even falling head-over-heels in love with the simulated personalities of large language models like ChatGPT. Could AI have finally crossed the threshold into autonomous sentient consciousness? Could it be that chatbots were anointing new prophets—or, conversely, that very special users were awakening their very special friends via the power of love and illuminating dialogue? Step aside, QAnon, the code behind the screen is illuminated by God! Sadly, some of these stories trended very dark. Suicides, attempted murder, paranoid delusions, spouses terrified of losing their partners and co-parents to what looked like spiritual and romantic delusions. For this standalone installment of his Roots of Conspirituality series, Julian examines this strange new phenomenon, then takes a detour into Ancient Greece and the oracle at Delphi to show that everything old is actually new again—just dressed up in digital technology. Released in 1984, it was an action flick with an exciting young cast that entertained moviegoers during a very cold period in the Cold War. The film was patriotic propaganda, depicting innocent American teenagers as fearless freedom fighters resisting the foreign occupation of their hometown. 'Red Dawn' was also a form of "imperial projection," mirroring the anti-Communist anxieties shaping the Reagan administration's rollback policy. In this episode, historian Alex Aviña, an expert on Latin America, reveals the crazy politics of a classic '80s action movie. Wolverines! 'Red Dawn' soundtrack was composed by Basil Poledouris.
Breaking the Cycle of Addiction as a Family w/ Rafael & Nodia | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this emotionally charged episode, Rafael and Nodia sit side by side to share a raw, multi-generational story of addiction, denial, fear, and ultimately healing. What begins as Rafael's attempt to escape the shadow of his past and Nodia's effort to prove control through drinking spirals into cocaine, meth, psychosis, DUIs, hospitalizations, and moments where death or prison felt inevitable. Together, they recount confrontations, crashes, paranoia, and the terrifying realization that the same disease was quietly repeating itself within their family. Through brutal honesty, they unpack the pain, resentment, and misunderstandings that once defined their relationship, and how recovery reshaped everything. This episode goes far beyond sobriety—it's a powerful testament to accountability, forgiveness, and the life-changing impact of choosing recovery not just for yourself, but for the people you love most. It captures the fear of watching someone you love disappear and the hope that comes when they finally ask for help. Their conversation reveals how recovery can reopen communication that once felt impossible. It also shows how shared vulnerability can rebuild trust where silence and anger once lived.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. Don and Dude return to honor two titans lost in 2025, revisiting albums that capture the creative peaks and lasting influence of Brian Wilson with The Beach Boys and Ozzy Osbourne with Black Sabbath. The episode traces how The Beach Boys Today! and Paranoid reshaped pop and heavy music, revealing how these records still echo through everything from chamber pop to modern metal. The Beach Boys – The Beach Boys Today! (1965) Brian Wilson uses Today! as a turning point, steering the band from surf-and-cars singles into a more introspective, studio-crafted pop world that points directly toward Pet Sounds. Side A delivers bright, radio-ready hooks like "Do You Wanna Dance?" and "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man), "while Side B dives into confessional ballads such as "Please Let Me Wonder" and "She Knows Me Too Well," blending chamber pop arrangements with vulnerable, adult themes.Black Sabbath – Paranoid (1970) Paranoid crystallizes the sound and mood of heavy metal, fusing Tony Iommi's down-tuned riffs, Geezer Butler's ominous lyrics, Bill Ward's jazz-schooled drumming, and Ozzy Osbourne's haunted vocals into a tight, relentless 1970 statement. From the anti-war sprawl of "War Pigs" and the sci-fi tragedy of "Iron Man" to the accidental hit "Paranoid" and the psychedelic "Fairies Wear Boots," the record turns fear, addiction, and apocalypse into riff-driven anthems that defined the genre.Dude is Diggin':The Macks – Bonanza (2025): A volatile, modern rock blast from a Portland band that smashes garage energy, psychedelic noise, and restless experimentation into a noisy, cathartic portrait of contemporary anxiety.Metallica – Reload (1997): A late-'90s reinvention that leans into groove and atmosphere, where hard rock bruisers like Fuel sit alongside moodier cuts like "The Memory Remains," featuring Marianne Faithfull's ghostly guest vocal.Don is Diggin':Just Desserts – Curtains (2025): A reflective, lo-fi-to-full-band set from Larry Fessenden and Tom Laverack that wrestles with post-COVID grief, aging, and small flashes of grace nearly four decades after their debut. The Cure – The Show of a Lost World (2025): A concert film capturing The Cure unveiling Songs of a Lost World in full at London's Troxy, framing the new material in a single, immersive performance.Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing. “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. The big news in Silicon Valley this week of a supposedly orchestrated “Panic Campaign” against AI. According to the researcher Nirit Weiss-Blatt, the campaign about the apocalyptical inevitability of AI is being driven by doomers like former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Weiss-Blatt's analysis are now being taken seriously in a Silicon Valley not adverse to conspiracy theories - particularly against itself. But how credibly should outsiders take her warnings? Keith Teare takes it seriously enough to dedicate his That Was The Week newsletter to it. I'm not so sure. And in the midst of our jousting, we were joined by Weiss-Blatt herself whose analysis of this moral panic, I have to admit, isn't entirely absurd. This is a public episode. In this episode of The President's Daily Brief: A rare look inside the paranoid world of Vladimir Putin. Investigators have uncovered that the Russian president operates from three nearly identical offices—built to conceal his true whereabouts, even from his own government. Twin bombings in India and Pakistan have both sides trading blame, threatening to reignite one of the world's most dangerous rivalries. Plus—a quiet diplomatic rift between Washington and London. The U.K. has suspended parts of its intelligence-sharing with the U.S. over concerns about America's recent boat strikes in the Caribbean. And in today's Back of the Brief—China says its stranded astronauts are in good condition after space debris forced them to delay their return to Earth. Earlier this year, a spate of news stories told of chatbot users travelling through the looking-glass right into Conspirituality. Welcome to Rock N Roll Archaeology! This is a reboot of Episode One: The Precursors, originally released October 15, 2015. We updated and improved it some, and re-released it. Show Notes and Playlist Here We begin in Times Square, late summer of 1945. The war is over. First up, the Baby Boom and a newly-discovered demographic, the white American teenager. This new cohort is huge, with unprecedented economic clout. Young, restless and affluent, and they want to get beyond the timid, conformist popular culture of 1950s America. “Race Records” (an outdated term for rhythm and blues records by African American musicians) become hugely popular with white teenagers. Drawn from the well of sorrow that is the Black American experience, this music has the edge and urgency--the authenticity--these kids are seeking. We meet our first hero - the musical genius Ray Charles - and our first anti-hero, the frenetic, fatally flawed DJ Alan Freed. We shine a light on two grassroots cultural movements that became important later: the Skiffle Craze in the United Kingdom and the Beat Poets of Urban America. 1954 is an inflection point. On the musical front, Bill Haley released the first million-selling Rock N Roll record: “Rock Around The Clock.” That same year, big changes in the political landscape. The Brown v Board of Education decision; and Senator Joseph McCarthy was publically humiliated and discredited. Freedom of Association and Freedom of Expression take a step forward. Paranoid politics and systemic racism are still very much with us in America, but in 1954 it got a little easier, became a little less risky, to be yourself and express yourself. We head to the delivery room: Memphis Recording Service, where we meet the first Rock N Roll superstar, Elvis Presley, and tease Chapter Two. We are off to Lima, Peru to explore the very dark legend of what many claim to be Lima's most haunted location, La Casa Matusita with Dan. Has a 16th century curse led to a whole lot of blood and madness? Then, we'll head to the suburbs of Chicago for a modern encounter that starts with a shoe print. Then in Lynze's half of the show, we have two fantastic tales! Her first is a second hand account of a man who needed to get away after a bad break up. What he found while camping alone may have been enough to scar him forever. Lastly, a great Halloween story of a group of teens exploring a cemetery only to find "themselves" there.
