ABD emperyalizmi bu emperyalist kuşatma politikası sökmezse, doğrudan bir askeri işgal tehdidini savurmaktan da geri durmuyor. O kadar ki Küba Ulusal Sivil Savunma Başkanlığı, aileler için hava saldırısı durumunda alınması gereken tedbirlere yönelik “koru, diren, hayatta kal ve kazan” başlıklı bir rehber yayınladı! Foundations of Amateur Radio When was the last time you told a story? The hobby of amateur radio represents as diverse and disparate a group of humanity as I've come across in my life. While that might mark me as living a sheltered existence, I have been around the globe and experienced some of what life celebration looks like. One thing I never tire of is hearing stories from the people I meet, each unique and worthy of my time and consideration. Over the years, in the context of broadcast radio and subsequently producing amateur radio news for over seven years, I've had the opportunity to interview people and record their stories and share them with the world. There are stories I keep retelling and others I'll never share, depending on what I've been entrusted with. I'm mentioning all this because I think that our stories are what makes us a community, a group of humans with different lives who have a common itch to scratch, conveniently labelled "Amateur Radio". With social media increasingly manipulated into highlighting and emphasising our differences, it's good to remember that we can use it to celebrate our common ground, glued together by this crazy, beautiful, rewarding, frustrating and experimental hobby we share. So, next time you get on-air, behind a keyboard or rub your finger on glass, remember, we can share our stories and be richer for the experience. I should point out that the nature of the stories we tell each other is dependant on you. While telling tales with embellishment is attractive, I rather think that it's remarkable, all on its own, that we can use minuscule amounts of energy, captured by a piece of random wire to communicate with someone on the other side of the world, so much so, that glitter is rarely required. You don't need to feel compelled to narrate your life story either, although that's entirely up to you. I'd encourage you to share your adventures, one story at a time, to inspire those around you to embark on their next journey of discovery. And if you're shy and you're not sure how to start, start small, one story at a time, practice makes perfect. Also, if your circuit board narrative smells of chicken, you're holding the wrong end of the soldering iron. Meanwhile I'll persist with the recalcitrant SoapyAudio software in search for the final missing puzzle piece.. Ha! .. to make this infernal contraption do what I can imagine, if only that cursed Yak would stand still, but that's a story for another day. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Foundations of Amateur Radio The thing I think I love most about the hobby of amateur radio is the challenges it represents, not in terms of life or emotional ones, though I will admit that there's some of those .. in no small part due to the variety and complexity associated with being human and a member of the community, more in terms of figuring out how stuff works and then how much stuff there is. I was first licensed in 2010 and since then I've attempted to document the experience of being an amateur and discovering just what that might mean. This week has been interesting, if not quite as productive as I was hoping for. I spent a full day working on SoapyAudio, you might recall, it's one of the potential puzzle pieces in my Bald Yak project. I can report that it compiles fine on a Raspberry Pi 2, and when I get a moment I suspect that it will also work just fine on a Pi Zero. When I got to the point of packaging it all up, I spent hours trying to get my head around the Debian packaging system. For reasons I don't understand, nobody appears to have written anything that monitors the standard 'make install' step, save for one project called 'checkinstall' which has some serious bugs, like overwriting the system password file, and is not recommended. While in the middle of that adventure I discovered that SoapySDR and associated modules, utilities and support tools are already packaged in Debian. I'll confess that I emulated a stunned mullet when I noticed that. While this might mean that I essentially spent three days shaving a Yak for apparently no good reason, it did allow me to discover that SoapyAudio is currently receive only, but adding transmit doesn't look like an unsolvable problem. I still don't know why I went down the compilation steps but it allowed me to peruse the source-code which helped discover how some of this hangs together and I'll hasten to add that my understanding is currently incomplete at best, but that's par for the course. After discovering the existing packaging I installed 'soapyremote-server' on the Pi and it worked out of the box .. something which I'm happy to say is a regular occurrence with Debian packages, perhaps this is why packaging is so complex, another thing to investigate as time permits. I then added an external USB sound card with the audio going into the rear DATA socket of my FT-857d, and together with the CT-62 compatible USB CAT cable, that's Computer Assisted Tuning, allowing remote control of the radio, the Pi was ready to be the network interface to my copy of GNU Radio. Well, not quite. There's some secret incantations that I have still to divine, but thanks to random forum posts with hints at how to format the command string required, I'm making progress. GNU Radio can see the Soapy Server, has passed the checks to control the radio, which happens behind the scenes thanks to Hamlib, but stumbles on the audio card side of things. If it weren't for other life affirming activities in my diary, I would be reporting success, but I can tell you that I can taste it. Now, why does this make me excited? Well, it means that I can now use my FT-857d across the room, technically across the Internet even, to receive and process RF within GNU Radio. You might recall that this is one of the stated aims of this whole endeavour. In terms of "50 things to do with an SDR", this one will end up in the "Listen to conversations on the 2-meter amateur radio band" pile. While it's not particularly exciting to listen to the local repeater across the room, something which I can do by turning up the volume or getting a long headphone lead, it represents a small milestone in the pursuit of my Bald Yak project which aims to create a modular, bidirectional and distributed signal processing and control system that leverages GNU Radio. It's called Bald Yak because by the time I'm done, the Yak is likely well and truly shaved. So .. micron by micron I'm getting closer. Büyük Peygamberimiz (s.a.v), Hz. Âişe'ye şöyle buyurdu: “Yâ Âişe, dünyanın acılığını, âhiretin iyiliği için iç.” Çalış, geçmişte verilen hükme güvenme; orada isminin hangi defterde yazıldığını bilemezsin. Şaki veya said olduğunu göremezsin. Bu sır, ilâhî bilgi hazinesinde saklıdır; karışma, karışacak olursan dinden çıkarsın. Çalış, yapacağın işler acı gelse de yap. Geçmişte verilen hüküm, seni ilgilendirmesin. Yapacağın işlere bak. O derin bilgiyi ne sen ne de başkası bilir. Buna kader bahsi denir. Kader ilmini ne sen tam bilirsin ne de başkaları.Zavallı, nefsinin perişanlığına ağla. Bir çocuğun ölse, kıyamet kopmuş gibi göz yaşı akıtırsın.

Kencan Dengan Tuhan - Senin, 25 Mei 2026Bacaan: "Segala berkat ini akan datang kepadamu dan menjadi bagianmu, jika engkau mendengarkan suara TUHAN, Allahmu." (Ulangan 28:2)Renungan: Pascabayar dan prabayakit kedua istilah ini pasti tidak asing bagi kita, para pengguna telepon seluler atau jaringan internet tanpa kabel. Ya, ini adalah sistem pembayaran tagihan pulsa atau kuota kita. Mau bayar di muka atau bayar belakangan? Diri sendirilah yang menentukan pilihan. Namun, tahukah kita bahwa sistem pembayaran ini juga dipakai ketika kita menerima berkat dan melakukan dosa? Bacaan di atas menyatakan dengan jelas bahwa berkat itu datang dan menjadi bagian kita, kalau kita mendengarkan suara-Nya. Berkat itu ada syaratnya. Berkat itu ada harga yang harus dibayar di muka sebelum menerimanya. Jadi, tidak ada berkat yang dinikmati dahulu baru dibayar harganya. Tidak ada berkat yang gratis dan seenak kita dalam menggunakannya. Lain halnya dengan dosa bahwa setiap orang dicobai oleh keinginannya sendiri, karena keinginan itu menyeret dan memikatnya (Yak. 1:14-15). Kalau keinginan itu memikat pasti keinginan itu menyenangkan, indah, dan memuaskan. Namun, jika keinginan yang memikat itu dibuahi dalam perbuatan, muncullah dosa. Lalu, dari dosa lahirlah maut. Dosa itu membayarnya selalu belakangan, karena dosa selalu menawarkan kenikmatan, kesenangan, kepuasan, dll. Itu sebabnya dosa selalu memikat manusia. Awalnya memang enak, tetapi akhirnya harus membayar mahal bahkan membayar dengan maut. Bagaimana dengan diri sendiri? Setelah membaca firman Tuhan dan renungan pagi ini, kiranya kita lebih menyukai berkat ketimbang dosa. Sekalipun untuk memperoleh berkat, kita harus membayar harganya dahulu, yaitu ketaatan serta kesetiaan kepada Tuhan dan firman-Nya. Pertanyaan sekali lagi untuk kita, pilih pascabayar atau prabayar? Pilih dosa atau berkat? Mari kita jalani kehidupan penuh berkat dengan membayarnya lebih dahulu. Tuhan Yesus memberkati. En España hay veces que se dice "dejen en paz a los muertos", como si identificar los cuerpos de nuestros seres queridos fuera un capricho y no una necesidad de la dignidad humana y un rito indispensable para cerrar un duelo. De esto da cuenta Antonio Alonso cuando dice que muchas familias cuyos familiares lucharon en el bando franquista piden a los genetistas forenses que identifiquen sus restos, enterrados en las fosas comunes de Cuelgamutos. Esta realidad debería explciarse más en nuestro país. Alonso es doctor en bioquímica y biología molecular y también uno de los grandes sabios que tiene nuestro país en genética forense. Ha sido director, entre 2019 y 2024, del Instituto Nacional de Toxicología y Ciencias forenses, y acaba de publicar, en la editorial Crítica, "La huella invisible, cómo el ADN cambió la historia de la justicia en España", en el que repasa y explica 8 casos fundamentales de nuestra historia que son también una especie de memorias profesionales. Por ejemplo, el de los bebés robados, que ha sido noticia hoy porque él y su equipo han contribuido a demostrar que, si bien se vulneraron los derechos de muchas mujeres durante todo el franquismo y hasta bien entrada la democracia, por ejemplo en instituciones como el Patronato de Protección a la Mujer, no existió en España una trama sistemática de bebés robados. Eso fue más bien un bulo amplificado por cierto tipo de periodismo. A pesar de esto, en la mayoría de los casos que Alonso cuenta en el libro, el periodismo de investigación ha sido clave para su trabajo y contribuido al esclarecimiento de la verdad, por ejemplo a la hora de establecer lo que verdaderamente sucedió en el YAK-42 o en el 11-M. En cuanto a las series (sí, de broma a Antonio Alonso a veces lo han llamado Grissom), el retrato que hacen del trabajo de un genetista forense no es en absoluto realista, pero es cierto que estas ficciones han despertado muchísimas vocaciones en genética, ciencias forenses y criminalística.  

Foundations of Amateur Radio While spending some quality time discovering what I don't know about GNU Radio, I explored the notion of attempting to at least understand a little more about how an FM signal works. Depending on your background, the letters FM mean different things. In amateur radio it's a way to encode information, generally audio, using something called frequency modulation. Outside the hobby, the letters point at commercial broadcast radio. While the two are related, they're not the same thing. In amateur radio use, FM is a single channel of mono-audio, however, in commercial broadcast radio, there's a whole lot more going on, interesting because it gives you ready-made access to a composite signal that's just complicated enough to be challenging without being so complex that you need to spend hours on understanding the thing. In essence, a commercial FM broadcast signal is multiple channels encoded in a specific and documented way. This is helpful, since you can compare the documentation against ready made examples and replicate the process for yourself. In case you're new here, I'm in the process of building a radio system, in software, using GNU Radio in a project called Bald Yak. Specifically, the Bald Yak project aims to create a modular, bidirectional and distributed signal processing and control system that leverages GNU Radio. It's called Bald Yak because by the time I'm done, the Yak is likely well and truly shaved. One of the easy things to forget when you're using GNU Radio Companion, is that the blocks you're connecting together on the screen into a flowgraph actually represent software, generated when you either build or run the flowgraph. This code is currently generated in either Python or C++, making me wonder, what does the code look like, and more specifically, what code would be needed to decode FM? It turns out that an old friend, the PySDR.org website has a whole chapter dedicated to this process. Chapter 18, the End-to-End Example, details how you can decode one of the channels embedded within a commercial FM broadcast, the RDS or Radio Data System signal. If you're not familiar, the PySDR.org website represents a whole book about software defined radio and python. It goes into as much or as little detail as you want, to explain how this whole software malarkey works, and takes you by the hand down the path of discovery. So, armed with a working example, I followed along the bouncing ball and made a working RDS decoder and I think, understood most of it. There's a few interesting wrinkles that I've contacted the author, Dr. Marc Lichtman, about and we'll see what comes of that. Here's the kicker. The author, who is also a senior member of the GNU Radio team, started with a GNU Radio flowgraph and reverse engineered what was happening to get to the point of the code that's available in PySDR.org Chapter 18. This is significant because it creates a relationship between the code I have in front of me and the code generated by GNU Radio, which means that when I start with a new flowgraph, not only do I know the steps required, I also know that the outcome is predetermined, as-in, I already know that there's a solution. Having professionally written software for over 40 years, I can tell you that this is not often the case. I realise that I can search the Internet for an RDS decoder flowgraph, but that's unlikely to get me to a better understanding of what GNU Radio is doing. Once I've clarified with the author, I'll add the code to my GitHub project, "Fifty Things you can do with a Software Defined Radio", specifically, "Receive road traffic information", since among other things, that's carried by RDS. As an aside, Rohde and Schwarz have a lovely YouTube video on the topic, "Understanding the Radio Data System", which is giving me a whole set of ideas about things we might attempt with amateur radio repeaters, but that's a story for another time. Foundations of Amateur Radio Still excited from my minor victory in discovering a missing puzzle piece associated with the project I'm working on, I spent the past week introducing my head, if not literally, at least figuratively, to the surface of my desk in a traditional head-desk troubleshooting move that you might be familiar with. I suppose it's an improvement on the "Bear with a Toothache" approach. In short, the Yak is losing hair .. rapidly. You might be wondering why I'm telling you about it, since in the land of milk and honey nothing ever goes wrong and all the answers are presented on a silver platter, except when they're not. Within the amateur radio community, it appears to me that the inclination to fiddle is ingrained and widespread. Given that the hobby is all about experimentation and learning, that's not a bad thing, but there are times when this behaviour can be counterproductive. Specifically when you're troubleshooting. Faced with a problem, there are times when a systematic approach is warranted. For some, the first time they come across this phenomenon is during the practical test component of their amateur radio license. Presented with a station, they're asked to determine why it's not working. The problem might be a power supply that isn't plugged in, or a disconnected antenna, the mode button set to FM, the squelch closed, the RF gain set to zero, generally something simple. Those inexperienced in the art of troubleshooting are more likely than not inclined to try everything, sometimes all at once, in the hope that one of the changes will magically fix the issue, but in reality, often making the problem worse. There is a better way. I'm mentioning this because this skill applies to many aspects of life and in the decades that I've been here, it's not something I was ever taught. It's funny to think that a quote from nearly a century ago applies to this skill: "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." The salient point being "eliminating all which is impossible". In other words, you're not finding the problem, you're eliminating all the things that are not the problem. Another way is to think of it as finding all the things that don't need fixing. While that might sound weird, in deeply interdependent systems like an amateur radio station, or a computer, that approach can help you find the root cause of an issue and with it the path to a potential fix. Of course, this process invites you to examine where the issue might exist. Experience will teach you that you need to start small and grow the net, rather than cast wide and narrow it down. That's not to say that you need to stop paying attention to the bigger picture. In the example of an inoperative station, you might discover that the lights in the room are out and that this coincides with the radio being off. In other words, trying to discover if the antenna is disconnected makes little sense, since there is no power to the radio. In my case, I'm balancing my efforts between maintaining an existing system whilst attempting to deploy a new one to replace it. I'm working on several related issues on multiple fronts. Their common theme is audio, though the specifics differ depending on which computer I'm looking at. Then there's the installation and ongoing care and maintenance associated with keeping GNU Radio running. It's a balancing act because while this is happening, I still need to look for work, respond to email, deal with the regulatory requirements for accounting and tax returns, not to mention the myriad projects I have going on at any given time. At this point I could go into deep and disturbing detail about the technology issues I'm juggling and I could even justify it by pointing out that a problem shared is a problem halved, but truth be told, I'm not sure you're up for a treatise on the comings and goings of forced system security updates and arising bugs, and just so we're clear, this is not the company who brought us a talking paperclip, it's the one who gave rise to companies called "Orange" and "Lemon". On the GNU Radio front, there's a snake based installer that happily installs two incompatible libraries for the same application, causing it to fail, and a beer related one that fails to install dependencies. At least I can use 'apt-get' on a real system. That said, juggling problems and all, I did manage to actually hear an FM station being decoded across the network. It did help that I actually connected the antenna to the radio, and I'm ignoring the audio buffer under-runs, or over-runs, depending on the weather, or some other unknowable variable, but I suspect that's all part of the learning I'm in the middle of.
