WARNING – THIS PODCAST RELATES TO THE DEATH OF A CHILD:“You will have blood on you hands” The words of a loving grandfather who, having been order by a single judge to relinquish his granddaughter, who he had cared for since she was a baby, into the brutal and ultimately murderous hands of her own father Ben Butler.Ellie Butler, was a sweet little six year old, who as her devoted grandparents would say was their absolute shining light. The same grandparents who would care for, nurture and bring little Ellie up for the first six years of her life. Ellie was placed into the care of her maternal loving grandparents after, as a new-born, she had been found with unexplained injuries whist in the care of her own father Ben Butler. A harrowing mixture of a barely believable judicial decisions, a technically of law and Ben Butler’s rampant unabated narcissism, which would involve the notorious and jailed PR guru Max Clifford. All of which culminated in a young defenceless child being placed at the vicious and cruel hands of her known to be highly volatile and violent father. As Ellie’s grandfather said to the judge and authorities who had made the disastrous order to make Ellie go back to her parents “You will have blood on your hands” What could make a grown man brutalise and callously take the life of his own six year old daughter? And why was Ellie’s mother Jennie Gray so completely unwilling to see any flaw or fault in anything Ben Butler did? Which would include abusing, humiliating and threatening her on multiple occasions. In this episode of Why Killers Kill – Analysis of Murder With Dr. Jane I’ll to look into the mind set of an angry and brutal father in an attempt to offer a psychological explanation of his vicious attitude towards his six year old daughter, Ellie Butler.

Family secrets can be dangerous things – especially when they are a secret about murder. In the West family of Gloucester, UK, it was an open secret - perversely called a family joke - that Fred and Rosemary’s eldest child, Heather had been disobedient to them and had paid the ultimate price – her life. The younger West children would be told that they would end up under the patio, like Heather if they displeased their parents, a story that would be often repeated to friends and at school. Both Fred West and Rosemary West (Letts as was) came from highly abusive backgrounds. Both of them are said to have been sexually abused by their parents and family members as children. Between them they would kidnap, torture and murder up to 12 women and children from 8 years to 21. In this episode of Why Killers Kill I will analyse the motives and behaviours of Fred and Rosemary West answering the question - what could have led to such a prolonged killing spree in the quiet market city, and surrounding countryside, of Gloucester by what would seem to be a nondescript couple?

Eighteen year old Brian Blackwell was clearly a gifted student, he would sail through his education with ease, getting top marks for his final school exams, which would, under normal circumstances have earned him his longed for place at medical school. However normal circumstances were not on Blackwell’s agenda. Because while he was on an end of school celebratory first class holiday to the States with his 18 year old girlfriend, funded fraudulently on his father’s credit cards, Blackwell’s parents were lying bludgeoned and stabbed to death in the opulent family home in a quiet village near Liverpool.Blackwell was a very bright individual, but he was also an indulged one, and when the holiday of a lifetime, that would include stays in presidential hotel suites, was costing over £30,000 it was just one fraudulent expense too many for his well-off parents to indulge. Blackwell’s sense of entitlement and grandiosity took over and he killed his father, Sydney, 73 and mother Jacqueline, 6. The following day would fly first class with his girlfriend to New York.Blackwell would make British legal history by being the first person in the UK to rely on a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder to answer the charge of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility rather than a murder charge. In this episode of Why Killers Kill - Analysis of Murder with Dr. Jane you’ll hear what happened on that fateful night in July 2004 when he was finally challenged by his ever doting parents and what likely led to Blackwell’s state of mind culminating in his killing of his mum and dad.

For 30 years, residents in a variety of south London properties, although curious and suspicious about their odd and secretive neighbours had no idea they were living right next to a Maoist cult run with an iron fist by a self proclaimed Marxist revolutionary calling himself Comrade Bala. For decades Bala, the leader and only male in the cult was sexually and physically abusing the seven female members, seizing their wages, and making them cook and clean for him while bullying, threatening and preventing them from leaving with the use of mental and physical coercion, whist all the time subjecting them to his deranged and tyrannical teachings. The sect was so secret that nobody realised that the women, apparently free to come and go at will, were seemingly emotionally and mentally shackled in all that time to their brutal leader by invisible handcuffs. Two cult members would die in suspicious circumstances, one falling out of a window and breaking her neck on Christmas Eve whilst taking a bath. The other being hit in the head by a cupboard door. And Bala would father a daughter with a cult member, making his daughter's birth mother deny responsibility or any attachment with her baby. This child would spend nearly 30 years denied education, health care, company of other children or any freedom. It was only when she was gravely ill that another cult member would arrange for them both to be rescued, which in a heat stopping plan they were able to achieve.Download now to listen to the fascination story of the Brixton Cult and quite how the tyrannical Comrade in charge got away with what he did for so long.
