Ep. 408: Tubi programmer Ryan Lavallette on The In-Laws, Magic, 20 Questions, Arlington Road, Scorpio, Captain Ron, Report to the Commissioner, Skinamarink Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. Tubi holds a special place among streamers for its free, wildly eclectic selection, and I'm not the only one who goes trawling through its selections to find something different to watch. And so for the latest episode, I had a blast talking with a member of the Tubi programming team, Ryan Lavalette, senior manager of content programming at the streamer. I picked his brain a little about how the Tubi mix is created, and then we chatted about a few movies currently on Tubi that had caught our eye for various reasons: The In-Laws (1979, with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin), Magic (1978, with Anthony Hopkins), 20 Questions (1987), Arlington Road (1999), Scorpio (1973), Captain Ron (1992), Report to the Commissioner (1975), and Skinamarink (2022). Here in Episode 9 of Season 5, I interview Mr. Rob Long. A longtime Hollywood professional, he was a writer and producer for the classic sitcom Cheers as well as for over a dozen other shows. A National Review contributor and columnist for both Commentary and Washington Examiner magazine, he has authored two books, Conversations With My Agent (1998) and Set-Up, Joke, Set-Up, Joke (2005), and edited one, Bigly: Donald Trump in Verse (2017). As the co-founder of Ricochet, a media network, he hosts “Martini Shot,” a long-running, bite-size showbiz podcast, as well as cohosts “GLoP Culture.” Drawing on his two comic memoirs—alongside his religious studies as a Master of Divinity student at Princeton Theological Seminary—we discuss his life in Hollywood, religious journey, and current training to become an Episcopal priest. Along the way we dig into the nature of humor, the rise and fall of the TV sitcom, the lost formation of the writer's room, what it is like to be a Hollywood conservative, how technology like streaming and AI has changed show business, the strategy for the perfect sermon, and the spiritual calling of the creative arts. Among the shows that are discussed include the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Andy Griffith Show, plus films like Twentieth Century, A Night at the Opera, The In-Laws, and Midnight Run; along with guest appearances by Michaelangelo's Pieta, Aristotle's Poetics, Moliere, P.G. Wodehouse, P.J. O'Rourke, plus the wit of Jesus of Nazareth. Learn more about your ad choices. When Shaun Ossei-Owusu looked around at his classmates at UC Berkeley School of Law, there were many upper middle class children of lawyers who were coming straight from their undergraduate degrees. There were not many people like him, a child of Ghanaian immigrants who grew up in an impoverished South Bronx community and was now finishing his PhD as a returning student. That background and his academic training gave him a different perspective on the law school curriculum. For example, his Property Law class was mostly focused on the ins and outs of titles and transfers. "It was strange to me, particularly being going to school at Berkeley, how little the class said about homelessness," Ossei-Owusu tells host Lee Rawles in this episode of the Modern Law Library. "We have about 750,000 people in this country who are unhoused in any given night. And this is the course, Property Law, that's most directly concerned with how we organize access space and shelter. And the course doesn't say much about homelessness. And so I felt that that was strange, but I didn't want to be the student in class saying, 'Well, why aren't we talking about this?' " Ossei-Owusu went on to practice healthcare enforcement law at Sidley Austin, and worked for the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. His time as a litigator and public interest lawyer gave him a look at how law school principles fared in real world situations. "Lawyers are implicated in many of the hot-button issues of the day, and much of that is tied to the ways that we train lawyers in law school to distance legal reasoning from social and moral consequences–and the ways they bring that habit into legal practice, whether it be BigLaw, public interest lawyering, or government lawyering," Ossei-Owusu says. It's something he now thinks deeply about as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School who focuses on criminal justice, social welfare and professional responsibility. In Law on Trial: An Unlikely Insider Reckons with Our Legal System, he calls out the ways this early training can result in further injustice and inequality for society. "Professional ethics say your job is to primarily serve clients, which creates an inevitable distance between what lawyers do and who pays the price," writes Ossei-Owusu in Law on Trial. "The result is a system that trains smart people to engineer brilliant solutions while staying disconnected from the human wreckage they may leave behind." In this episode of the podcast, Ossei-Owusu and Rawles talk about the hard truths of public interest legal work, how regulatory work can sometimes have more impact than litigation, and and how good intentions alone cannot erase harm.

Growing up in an African household often comes with strict, unwritten rules—don't question authority, don't challenge your parents, and always respect your elders. But what happens when you're an adult living in a different culture and those expectations remain the same?In this episode, PF reflects on his upbringing with a strict Yoruba mother and a more liberal father, and how those experiences shaped the way he now raises his own children. The conversation explores the important difference between honor and obedience, emphasizing that honoring parents means showing respect and care, but it doesn't always mean obeying every instruction. The crew also dives into the realities of navigating cultural expectations, generational love languages, family guilt, and the challenges of parenting differently from how you were raised. It's a candid, thoughtful discussion about faith, culture, and breaking unhealthy patterns while still honoring where you come from.TIMESTAMPS- 00:00 — Cold Open: Esther vs. PF's Last Name Drama- 01:30 — Esther's Story: "I Matched My Dad's Energy"- 03:30 — What Were Your Parents Like Growing Up?- 05:30 — PF's Upbringing: Strict Mom, Liberal Dad- 08:00 — Discipline in the Nigerian Home: No Escape from Justice- 09:30 — When Parents Transition from Authority to Counselor- 11:00 — Yoruba Culture: Never Challenge Authority- 13:00 — PF's Wife AK vs. His Mother — The Baby Bath Standoff- 17:00 — Moving Away: When Distance Changes Everything- 19:00 — The Party Incident: When Everyone Applied Wisdom- 21:00 — HONOR vs. OBEDIENCE: The Biblical Distinction- 23:00 — Practical Example: Absent Father Gives College Advice- 25:30 — Emotional Blackmail: "I Won't Come to the Wedding"- 28:00 — First Paycheck Culture: Biblical or Just Tradition?- 30:00 — When You Can't Afford to Help Your Parents- 33:00 — "What's Frivolous to You Is Existential to Them"- 35:00 — Honoring a Parent Who Abandoned You- 37:00 — Tunde's Struggle: Love Languages with In-Laws- 42:00 — What PF Did Differently Raising His Kids- 45:00 — Curiosity vs. Obedience: Don't Kill the Child's Brain- 48:00 — Should Christian Parents Spank Their Kids?- 50:00 — The Rod Is Authority, Not Just a Stick- 52:00 — PF's Daughter Was Hitting Kids — The Wake-Up Call- 54:00 — Closing: What PF Is Grateful For + Next Episode Teaser Community CTA

We all want to give our children the world we did not have, but at what point does our overcompensation become their greatest weakness? In a world of instant gratification and digital shortcuts, Nesha G and Moe G explore the fine line between being a supportive parent and raising a generation that cannot handle a lecture without crumbling. The dynamic between the hosts is on full display as they move from the lighthearted banter of gym "PRs" to the heavy reality of protecting your marriage from "creepy" neighbors and overstepping mothers. As the conversation unfolds, you will hear Moe and Nesha debate the "Builders" versus "Millennials" approach to life, education, and the sheer cost of living in 2026. They tackle listener letters about gaslighting in the car and the viral concept of the "damp paper towel" partner who refuses to stand up for his wife. This episode is a soulful blend of humor and hard truths that reminds us all that while the world is changing, the core values of respect and protection in a marriage must remain unshakable.Send a textSupport the show Thanks for rocking with us! Holiday gatherings can feel overwhelming. Especially when you're navigating opinions, expectations, and judgement from the people you love most. In this episode, I'm sharing my timely "Family Potluck" analogy to help you handle extended-family drama, and stay calm around challenging personalities. You'll learn how to let others "bring what they bring" without taking it on or letting it ruin your mood. If you'd like to dive deeper into this topic, here are a couple more episodes I've done on this topic: Surviving Family Reunions Holidays with the In-Laws
The United States has long been an international outlier, with a powerful business class, a weak social state, and an exceptional gun culture. In Law and Order Leviathan: America's Extraordinary Regime of Policing and Punishment (Princeton UP, 2025), David Garland shows how, after the 1960s, American-style capitalism disrupted poor communities and depleted social controls, giving rise to violence and social problems at levels altogether unknown in other affluent nations. Aggressive policing and punishment became the default response.Garland shows that America lags behind comparable nations in protections for working people. He identifies the structural sources of America's penal state and the community-level processes through which political economy impacts crime and policing. He argues that there is nothing paradoxical in America's reliance on coercive state controls; the nation's vaunted liberalism is largely an economic liberalism devoted to free markets and corporate power rather than to individual dignity and flourishing. Fear of violent crime and distrust of others ensure public support for this coercive Leviathan; racism enables indifference to its harms.Interviewee: David Garland is the Arthur T Vanderbilt Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology at New York University and an Honorary Professor at Edinburgh University. Host: Schneur Zalman Newfield is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Jewish Studies at Hunter College, City University of New York, and the author of Degrees of Separation: Identity Formation While Leaving Ultra-Orthodox Judaism (Temple University Press). When I would travel the country for book signings, one of the most special combinations of people to arrive at my table would be mothers and daughters-in-law. It's always so touching when two of the most important women in a man's life actually like one another, and maybe even love each other. While it's sadly not the norm, I've always believed that when a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law can open their hearts to receive the blessing of their relationship ...
