By Robert Riggs The Godfather. Goodfellas. The Sopranos. Hollywood entertained us with polished fiction—honor among thieves, loyalty bound by blood, men of principle wrapped in tailored suits. But the real mob? It was darker. Colder. Predatory. The smile came first. The knife came after. This is the true story of how FBI Special Agent Mike Campi helped dismantle the Genovese crime family—the oldest, largest, and most insidious of New York's five Mafia Families. Founded by Charles “Lucky” Luciano in 1931. Consolidated under Vito Genovese in the late 1950s. The family once ruled Manhattan's west side piers and the Fulton Fish Market on the East River with quiet brutality. Everything moved through their hands—money, muscle, silence. Campi joined the FBI's Organized Crime Squad in 1985, stepping into the heart of a sweeping federal assault on the American Mafia. Over the next two decades, he led investigations that exposed the rot behind the façade. His new book, Mafia Takedown, pulls back the curtain on what really happened. Not the Hollywood version. The truth.

At the turn of the 20th century, the anti-immigration and eugenics movements used data about marginalized people to fuel racial divisions and political violence under the guise of streamlining society toward the future. Today, as the tech industry champions itself as a global leader of progress and innovation, we are falling into the same trap.On April 10th, Anita Say Chan, author of Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future (UCP 2025 and open access), joined Émile P. Torres and Timnit Gebru for a discussion of the 21st century eugenics revival in big tech and how to resist it in a conversation moderated by Trustworthy Infrastructures Program Director Maia Woluchem. Predatory Data is the first book to draw this direct line between the datafication and prediction techniques of past eugenicists and today's often violent and extractive “big data” regimes. Torres and Gebru have also extensively studied the second wave of eugenics, identifying a suite of tech-utopian ideologies they call the TESCREAL bundle.Purchase your own copy of Anita Say Chan's book Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future: https://bookshop.org/a/14284/9780520402843.Learn more about the event at datasociety.net (https://datasociety.net/events/resisting-predatory-data/).

Join us as we delve into the alarming rise of predatory claims companies – businesses illegally preying on veterans navigating the complexities of their earned VA benefits. This isn't a matter of policy; it's about safeguarding those who have sacrificed so much for our nation. In this podcast Jim Marszalek, DAV National Service Director, and Scott Hope, Deputy National Service Director for Training, to expose the tactics of these "claims sharks," clarify the legal landscape, and most importantly, highlight the free, trusted resources available to veterans through the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). It's a common refrain: AI is neither good nor bad because that depends on how its used. Professor Anita Say Chan begs to differ. Chan is the author of Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future (U California Press, 2025). Chan is Associate Professor in the School of Information Sciences and Department of Media and Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as the author of a prior book Networking Peripheries on tech movements among craftwork communities in Peru. In her current book, Chan documents how the Big Data on which AI are trained are based on long-standing data infrastructures—sets of practices, policies, and logics—that remove, imperil, devalue, and actively harm people who refuse to conform to racialized patriarchal power structures and the priorities of surveillance capitalism—most pointedly immigrant, feminist, and low-income communities. Centered mostly in the United States as well as Latin America, Predatory Data shows how the eugenicist data practices of the past now shape our present. But her approach is fundamentally a politics of pluralism. Chan dedicates half of the book to amplifying and praising the small-scale, community-led projects of the past and present—from the legendary Hull House's data visualizations to community data initiatives in Champaign, Illinois. There is much fuel for political outrage in this book and also fodder for solidarity and hope. To be ruled is to be spied upon and inspected, quantified, measured, and ranked, and then registered and regulated with all the inherent structural violence packed into those arrangements. To be free is to abolish all of it, to reject that system's hold over our minds as well as to defeat its power in the world. What kind of society do we want to live in? What world will we build? Today we're joined in conversation with Anita Say Chan, a feminist, decolonial scholar, and author of Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and our Fight for an Independent Future, as we think about techno-surveillance, algorithmic discrimination, the noisy echoes of the anti-immigration and eugenics movements of the 19th century all around us, as well as alternative data practices and projects developed by minorities actors in pursuit of justice.

Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future (University of California Press, 2025) illuminates the throughline between the nineteenth century's anti-immigration and eugenics movements and our sprawling systems of techno-surveillance and algorithmic discrimination. With this book, Anita Say Chan offers a historical, globally multisited analysis of the relations of dispossession, misrecognition, and segregation expanded by dominant knowledge institutions in the Age of Big Data. While technological advancement has a tendency to feel inevitable, it always has a history, including efforts to chart a path for alternative futures and the important parallel story of defiant refusal and liberatory activism. Chan explores how more than a century ago, feminist, immigrant, and other minoritized actors refused dominant institutional research norms and worked to develop alternative data practices whose methods and traditions continue to reverberate through global justice-based data initiatives today. Looking to the past to shape our future, this book charts a path for an alternative historical consciousness grounded in the pursuit of global justice. Abuse in academia: Are universities protecting predatory professors?

Media Storm

This week, Media Storm investigates how universities handle sexual misconduct cases - when their prestigious professors are at the centre of the scandal. It all started when our intern, a student at LSE, told us about student activism stirring at her university, after a dozen sexual misconduct allegations against one male professor resulted in no disciplinary action for him - and several female staff resigning in protest. It's not a secret that women drop out of academia at disproportionate rates to men. The female-male ratio slips from over 50/50 at postgraduate studies to 30/70 at the highest rank of professor – giving the sector the reputation of a “leaky pipeline”. But staff sexual misconduct (and universities' failures to address it), is rarely, if ever, explored as a reason. We investigated. And to borrow the resigning words of one female professor, what we found, at times, “reads like a textbook on how to turn a complaints process into a gauntlet, into a warning to women not to challenge the behaviour of men and the institutions that protect them”.   The episode was co-produced by Mathilda Mallinson and Camilla Tiana, and hosted by Mathilda Mallinson and Helena Wadia. The music is by Samfire. Academic resources: ·       Eradicating Sexual Violence in Tertiary Education (UCU, 2021) ·       Power in the academy: staff sexual misconduct in UK higher education (NUS, 2021) ·       Misconduct Disclosure Scheme proposal (1752, 2024)  ·        ‘How Do Institutional Gender Regimes Affect Formal Reporting Processes for Sexual Harassment? A Qualitative Study of UK Higher Education,' by Anna Bull, and Erin Shannon (Law & Policy, 2024) Response from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) spokesperson:   “LSE is committed to a working and learning environment where people can achieve their full potential free of all types of harassment and violence. We take reports of sexual harassment extremely seriously and encourage any member of the LSE community who has experienced or witnessed this to get in touch via one of our many channels. Further, if a complaint of misconduct is received against any member of our faculty, staff or student body we will always investigate fairly and fully, following our policies and procedures. “LSE has developed, and continues to develop, a number of measures to ensure any allegation of misconduct receives a trauma-informed, robust and compassionate response.  “These measures include the new Report + Support system- an online tool where staff and students can report issues of concern and which provides information about support, policies and procedures and campaigns. This enables us to address issues more quickly and consistently across the School and vastly improve our approach to case management and communication with all involved. In line with sector best practice, we also plan to make greater use of external investigators in the future.  "We have commissioned Rape Crisis South London and Survivors UK to run an Independent Sexual Violence Advisory service for the School. This provides practical and emotional support for any student or staff member who needs it and supports them through a reporting process and/or the criminal justice process if they wish. This service is available to access online without a waiting list. This represents a step-change in the level of specialist support we're offering our students.  “We have also implemented a tailored all-staff online training course on addressing harassment and sexual misconduct affecting students, developed with Advance HE. This is being rolled out as required training across the School."  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Illinois Senator Proposes Stronger Measures Against Predatory Towing Practices

SPRINGFIELD – In response to predatory towing practices that take advantage of Illinois motorists, State Senator Celina Villanueva introduced a measure to strengthen enforcement against bad actors and ensure safer roads for drivers during a press conference Wednesday.  “Legitimate, law-abiding towers also suffer from these bad practices,” said Villanueva (D-Chicago). “This legislation is about protecting drivers, cracking down on predatory towers, and ensuring that Illinois has the enforcement tools necessary to hold violators accountable.” Currently, the Illinois Commerce Commission issues fines to violators, but many of the worst offenders ignore penalties and continue operating under new business names. Senate Bill 2040 would strengthen enforcement by allowing the ICC to impound unregistered tow trucks, authorizing the Secretary of State to suspend license plates for unpaid fines, and requiring tow operators to register business and storage locations to prevent vehicles from being held at unlisted lots. The bill also would ban fraudulent towers from obtaining new licenses for three years and prohibit operators from placing liens on essential personal property left in a towed vehicle. “As ICC Chief of Police for the last five years, predatory towing operations have been a consistent thorn in our side. My officers conduct weekly joint details to catch irresponsible towers in the act, and our agency has raised violation fines, but we're limited with what we can do in our enforcement efforts,” said ICC Police Chief Ruben Ramirez Jr. “Instead of fining the same bad actors again and again, the ICC needs stronger enforcement tools to stop predatory towers from being able to tow peoples' cars in the first place.” Senate Bill 2040 awaits to be heard by the Senate Transportation Committee.

Sean “Diddy” Combs, the once-celebrated music mogul behind Bad Boy Records, has been accused of creating a "degrading" and "predatory" work environment for the members of his hit girl group Danity Kane, according to former member D. Woods. Speaking on Good Morning America, Woods described a toxic atmosphere where the band members were judged primarily on their sex appeal rather than their talent. “He viewed his artists as ‘pieces of meat,'” said Woods, who joined the group after appearing on Combs' reality TV series Making the Band 3. “In some of the environments, it was even scary to be by yourself.” Woods' allegations come amid mounting legal troubles for Combs, who was arrested in September on suspicion of sex trafficking and racketeering. Prosecutors allege he orchestrated events he called "freak-offs," where women were forced to participate in multi-day sex parties. More than 150 individuals, including men and boys, have accused Combs of sexual assault, resulting in over 30 civil lawsuits. Woods recounted her experiences during an upcoming Investigation Discovery docuseries titled The Fall of Diddy. In the series, she recalls witnessing “inappropriate communications” between Combs and fellow Danity Kane member Aubrey O'Day, who was ultimately fired alongside Woods during Making the Band 4. Woods noted that there was no one to report such behavior to, forcing the group members to rely solely on one another for support. Asked by Good Morning America's Eva Pilgrim if any avenues for reporting existed, Woods replied, “Absolutely not. What were they going to do? It's like, ‘How do we survive this?'” Despite the damning allegations, Combs and his legal team maintain his innocence, calling the accusations “pure fiction.” In a statement to GMA, his lawyers criticized the documentary's producers, claiming they failed to give Combs an adequate opportunity to respond to the allegations. “[Combs] has full confidence in the facts and the judicial process, where truth will prevail,” the statement read. Woods explained her decision to come forward now, stating that she finally feels her story will be heard and taken seriously. She acknowledged fears of retaliation if Combs is acquitted but emphasized that staying silent hasn't changed anything. “Every time I think I should stay quiet, I remind myself that not talking hasn't helped,” she said. Combs is currently being held in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. A judge determined he was a flight risk and could potentially intimidate witnesses. His trial is set to begin on May 5, 2025. #SeanCombs #DanityKane #MusicIndustry #SexTrafficking #MakingTheBand #CelebrityTrial #BreakingNews Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
