Passage: Matthew 3:13-4:11 Last week we looked at John the Baptist's ministry of preparing the way for the arrival of the King, Jesus by calling people to repent and baptizing them as a sign of that turning from sin toward God. So it's a little surprising, especially to John, when the King arrives and requests that he himself undergo the same baptism. Often times the baptism and temptation of Jesus at the beginning of his ministry is seen by people as an example for us to follow, and there is an element of that. But even more, it marks Jesus' own preparation for the work of redemption he's come to do for his people. In his baptism and temptation, he is a King who both stands with his people as a comrade in arms and fights for his people as a champion in battle. Here we see Jesus identifying with us as sinners, yet without sin, and facing temptation for us in victory. All in order that he might be prepared and equipped to carry out his mission of rescue and rule. Join us this Sunday as we continue our series in Matthew and consider Jesus as our comrade and champion in the battle against sin.

Explaining History (explaininghistory) (explaininghistory)

The character of Jim in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was written as a condemnation of the Jim Crow regimes that were springing up across the South as the Reconstruction Era slowly came to an end. Twain's Jim was the first Black character in popular American literature that can be thought of as being written in depth and without becoming another racist caricature. The story, set before the civil war, has been the subject of ongoing scholarship and contestation ever since. In this podcast episode, we hear from academic Shelley Fisher Fishkin whose new book Jim: The Afterlives of Huckleberry Finn's Comrade explores the legacy of the character from the late 19th Century through to the Civil Rights era and the Black Lives Matter moment*****STOP PRESS*****I only ever talk about history on this podcast but I also have another life, yes, that of aspirant fantasy author and if that's your thing you can get a copy of my debut novel The Blood of Tharta, right here:Help the podcast to continue bringing you history each weekIf you enjoy the Explaining History podcast and its many years of content and would like to help the show continue, please consider supporting it in the following ways:If you want to go ad-free, you can take out a membership hereOrYou can support the podcast via Patreon hereOr you can just say some nice things about it here Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/explaininghistory. Matt Crawford speaks with professor and author Shelly Fisher Fishkin about her book, Jim: The Life and Afterlives of Huckleberry Finn's Comrade. Mark Twain's Jim, introduced in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), is a shrewd, self‑aware, and enormously admirable enslaved man, one of the first fully drawn Black fathers in American fiction. Haunted by the family he has left behind, Jim acts as father figure to Huck, the white boy who is his companion as they raft the Mississippi toward freedom. Jim is also a highly polarizing figure: he is viewed as an emblem both of Twain's alleged racism and of his opposition to racism; a diminished character inflected by minstrelsy and a powerful challenge to minstrel stereotypes; a reason for banning Huckleberry Finn and a reason for teaching it; an embarrassment and a source of pride for Black readers.   Eminent Twain scholar Shelley Fisher Fishkin probes these controversies, exploring who Jim was, how Twain portrayed him, and how the world has responded to him. Fishkin also follows Jim's many afterlives: in film, from Hollywood to the Soviet Union; in translation around the world; and in American high school classrooms today. The result is Jim as we have never seen him before—a fresh and compelling portrait of one of the most memorable Black characters in American fiction.

Edition No113 | 17-03-2025 - Massive protests have erupted in Belgrade and Budapest against the corruption and kleptocracy of incumbent governments. In Bucharest, Romania thousands gathered to declare their solidarity with Europe and Ukraine, and reject Russia attempts to interfere with and corrupt their democracy. Romania is Europe, is the sentiment on the streets, and there is anger also at the attempt of Trump and his supporters to try and enable this Russia interference and gerrymandering, under the pretext of free speech. Streets are flooding with people, in an echo of the 100+ days of protests ongoing in Georgian towns and cities. Protestors brand their national flags, as well as EU flags, and are chanting Russia be damned, and its attempts to destabilise their democratic processes and process. Orbán in Hungary was elected democratically, but his behaviour increasingly resembles that of a dictator, and his regime is seen as pro-Russian. He shut down public transportation to prevent people coming from across the nation gathering in the capital.Opposition leader Péter Magyar declared: "The spring is here. The spring of the Hungarians. And we, together will end Orban's winter!" Orbán's regime is facing collapsing poll numbers and massive protests, but he continues to double down on actions that align with the Kremlin's strategic interests. He has put to the EU a list of ‘demands' and continues to frustrate and block measures to support Ukraine. ----------SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISERA project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's front-line towns.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras----------LINKS:https://www.dw.com/en/hungarys-orban-vows-crackdown-on-media-ngos/a-71932327https://www.politico.eu/article/viktor-orban-vows-crackdown-shadow-army-political-opponents/https://kyivindependent.com/eu-resists-pressure-from-hungary-extends-russia-sanctions-including-those-on-mikhail-fridman/https://apnews.com/article/hungary-orban-crackdown-media-ngo-38776560a2edf5948482dd4839461411https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2025/03/15/7503069/https://www.kyivpost.com/post/48992----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur first live events this year in Lviv and Kyiv were a huge success. Returning friend of the show Comrade Yui swings by to discuss the 1994 Full Moon direct-to-video masterwork Dark Angel: The Ascent. The story follows the exploits of a bored, beautiful young demon Veronica Iscariot (Angela Featherstone) as she defies the orders of her parents and the rules of hell to visit Earth and walk among the humans. It's not long before she realizes that humanity has forsaken its God-given gifts and descended into all manners of evil, which must be brutally punished. Written by Freeway director Matthew Bright and directed by Linda Hassani (her sole feature directorial effort), the film defies all expectations of the DTV format with an unusually rich premise, emotional depth, and style to spare. We begin with a discussion of the film's unique theology, offering a vision of Heaven and Hell working in concert to do the bidding of the Almighty. Then, we explore how Bright's script searingly antagonizes many of society's ills, especially those germane and topical to the mid-90s - anti-welfare rhetoric, police brutality, antisexualism. Then, we uncover the film's depthful look at the notion of fallenness, and how its characters perceive of complacency and disregard for evil as tantamount to evil itself.   Follow Comrade Yui on Twitter.Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Warning: This post contains satire. Proceed with extreme caution. Side effects include bouts of critical thinking and unintended laughter. If you find yourself taking it too seriously, please consult with your doctor immediately. In the hottest hell of our imaginations, two Fascists and a Communist escape into a corner bar, the Barbarossa. The black-haired man with a tiny caterpillar mustache sits in an empty booth. He is Adolf Hitler, known to his people as Mein Fuhrer. A shorter man with a thicker, fatter mustache sits at a table in the middle of the room. He is Joseph Stalin, known as Comrade or Generalissimo. And the third man doesn't know where to sit. Barrel-chested and wide-eyed, with a cleanly shaven face—no mustache—he is Benito Mussolini, known to his people as Il Duce.“Sit, Benito,” Hitler says, pointing to the bar. Mussolini does as he is told.A tiny woman with straggly grey hair flying everywhere appears but does not make eye contact with the three dictators. She hovers and awaits her orders, pulling on her white apron. Quivering in fear, she admonishes her considerable sins and accepts her fate.“What are we drinking?” Stalin says.“Tea for me in a porcelain cup,” says Hitler. “And something sweet. Pralines!”“I will just have the usual,” Mussolini says.“Same for me,” says Stalin. The woman scurries back into the darkness and emerges moments later with a bottle of vodka, a tall glass of milk, and a saucer of pralines, which she places before Hitler. He rubs his hands together excitedly like a schoolboy. “Mmmmm, my favorite!” Says Hitler, “But where's the tea!” The woman startles and nods furiously but must first place the vodka on Stalin's table with a shot glass and then finally serve Mussolini his tall glass of milk.As the wench turns to leave, Hitler stews. It's taking too long. He pounds his fist on the table, and the woman races off.“That's always been your problem, Adolf. You are too impatient,” Stalin says, pouring himself a glass. “Impatient and impulsive.”Hitler scoffs. “Enjoy your ‘water,' Joseph. Do you think we're that stupid?”The cursed woman returns, taking care not to spill the cup of hot tea on Hitler as she carefully places it before him. Hitler dismisses her with a wave.“Water,” Stalin says, “How would you ever know, even it was?”“We're already bored of your little tiresome games,” Hitler says. Now, Mussolini pounds his fist on the bar. “Will both of you SHUT UP? We have urgent business to attend to.”Hitler and Stalin share a look. Then, both break into giggles.“WHAT is so funny if I may ask?” Mussolini says.“You, uh, have a bit of a milk mustache, Benito; it looks like mine!” says Stalin.Mussolini slides his sleeve across his face, wiping off the milk, but remains defiant.“Stop laughing, Adolf!”Hitler covers his mouth to try to keep from laughing.“Ha Ha real funny,” Mussolini says. “I used to drink milk for breakfast. Now, It's for my stomach. A terrible ulcer.”“Settle down, Benito,” Hitler says. “We did not gather here to discuss your dietary preferences.”“You're one to talk,” Mussolini says. “Maybe if you'd laid off the sugar, you might have—” This is a public episode.
