On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by the hosts of the Eerie Essex podcast, Ailsa Clarke and Bethan Briggs-Miller!Ailsa and Bethan have been at this here podcasting malarkey since the pandemic, and it's highly likely that you are already familiar with Eerie Essex. If you've never had the pleasure to listening to them though, well, you're in for a treat! In this episode Ailsa, Bethan and Martin talk about everything from lasagne to garden centres to demonic possession, getting lost in underground caves, and Matthew Hopkins, Witch Finder General. As you will hear, both Ailsa and Bethan have really interesting backgrounds and educational journeys to where they are today, but part of the reason we love Eerie Essex though is because of its warmth. Yes, episodes frequently contain ideas that might make you soil your britches with fear. And yes, the research Ailsa and Bethan engage in is really thorough. But, more than anything, it's the cosy, generous, very funny tone of their podcast that we find to spellbinding. If you want to know more about Eerie Essex and listen to the podcast, just search for Eerie Essex on your favoured podcast app and you'll find it. Alternatively, if you would like to know more about, and possibly visit, the East Anglian Folklore Centre, for which Bethan is serving as Co-Director, you can learn more about it at eastanglianfolklorecentre.co.ukFor now though, gather in close around the Three Ravens campfire for a conversation which ventures from caves full of smuggler's treasure to a forest full of nightmares, from rural to urban, and from the Roman era right up to the modern day.We really hope you enjoy it, and will be back on Monday with our brand new County Episode all about the history and folklore of Rutland!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On this week's episode of Three Ravens we're off to Essex, exploring the history and folklore of a county that has everything. Apart from mountains...We start off discussing April Fool's Day, which has a surprisingly long legacy, after which we embark for Essex! We begin by talking about a bunch of strange historical quirks in the county, including lots of things to do with ponds - ones in which dead pirates have oak trees growing out of their chests, or where, for centuries, people have been drawn out into Epping Forest to end their own lives, or the one where Matthew Hopkins, Witch Finder General, began his reign of terror ducking witches. All before Martin gets salty, jammy, and slightly fishy in pursuit of this week's County Dish...Next, we dig into some folklore, including six different dragon legends, a contender for the title of 'England's Most Haunted House,' Ralph of Coggeshall and more, all informed by some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with Ailsa Clarke and Bethan Briggs-Miller, hosts of the brilliant Eerie Essex podcast. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's telling of "The Rage of Boudica." So, if you're even partway Roman, you'd best start running now!We really hope you enjoy the episode, and we will be back on Thursday with a new Magic and Medicines bonus episode about Leech Books and Early Medical Texts, all before the full interview with Ailsa and Bethan comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Sunday 23rd March 2025 - West SiteSpeaker - Andy ChapmanAndy and his wife, Bethan lead Riverside Vineyard in Feltham, near Heathrow Airport.Andy takes a look at a part of the ministry of the Church that Vineyard founder John Wimber called "The Stuff" - Healing the sick..._________________Mark 5 v 21-4321)  When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered round him while he was by the lake. 22)  Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23)  He pleaded earnestly with him, ‘My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.' 24)  So Jesus went with him.A large crowd followed and pressed round him. 25)  And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26)  She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27)  When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28)  because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.' 29)  Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.30)  At once Jesus realised that power had gone out from him. He turned round in the crowd and asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?'31)  ‘You see the people crowding against you,' his disciples answered, ‘and yet you can ask, “Who touched me?”'32)  But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33)  Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34)  He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.'35)  While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. ‘Your daughter is dead,' they said. ‘Why bother the teacher anymore?'36)  Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, ‘Don't be afraid; just believe.'37)  He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38)  When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39)  He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.' 40)  But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41)  He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha koum!' (which means ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up!'). 42)  Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43)  He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.___________________Recorded at West Site - 23Mar2025

In September 1993, a TV show like no other appeared on our screens, asking us to consider the essence of truth and belief, to think about the nature and roles of science and humanity, and to question what we were told by those in power. Combining horror, science fiction, drama, crime, and comedy with cinematic filmmaking, The X-Files transported the paranoia of the sixties and seventies to the technologically savvy nineties as it followed two iconic characters, FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

In S 5 E 11 I am delighted welcome Dr Bethan Richards to the podcast.   Dr Richards is a Staff Specialist Rheumatologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and Deputy Director of the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health. In 2019, following her return from Stanford, Bethan had the honour of being appointed Chief Medical Wellness Officer in Sydney Local Health District – an Australian first. She is also the District's inaugural MDOK Centre Director.            Throughout her career, Dr Richards has had extensive experience and a passion for designing and implementing mentoring, teaching, leadership and wellbeing programs. Following a successful pilot in junior medical staff, her evidence based BPTOK wellbeing program is now being rolled out to over 14,000 staff in Sydney Local Health District as MyDistrictOK (MDOK). Dr Richards is a national thought leader and researcher in the field of workplace wellbeing and has advised and mentored local, national and international organisational leaders on how to improve healthcare staff burnout and promote professional fulfilment.        This is a conversation I have wanted to have on the podcast for some time but feel we have reached a fitting and opportune juncture to have now.       It is hard to go first. This podcast celebrates the trailblazers and change makers in healthcare, business academia, sport and beyond. Many of my guests, like Bethan,  have gone first as innovators, movers and shakers, so that they might make the path easier for those of us who follow and are coming after.       This is a high level conversation in which Bethan discusses her healthcare organisational wellbeing work and journey to date from pitch to pilot, through iteration and scaling with a strategic and clinical governance framework and lens. She looks ahead at how we can collectively progress the work incorporating into national safety, quality and accreditation standards.  This is a masterclass at the intersection of leadership, strategy and innovation from someone who has been learning whilst doing and whose consistent and persistent efforts have afforded us a blueprint for healthcare organisational workforce wellbeing reform. This is the episode to listen to more than once, share with your colleagues and executive and healthcare leadership teams. Thank you Bethan for all the work that you do. A Mother's Perspective on Childhood Cancer: Bethan Keall

Today's Raise the Line guest has a simple but powerful message for medical providers, born of a mother's heartbreak. “It's going to be rare in your career to meet a zebra but the impact you can have is phenomenal. An early diagnosis could make the difference between life and death for these children,” says Bethan Keall who lost her young daughter Matilda (Tilly) in 2022 to neuroblastoma, a rare cancer most commonly found in children. Because some symptoms of the disease can be easily attributed to other causes, early diagnosis is difficult, particularly if providers are not on the lookout for it. Tilly's diagnosis of an aggressive form of neuroblastoma introduced Bethan and her husband to the unfortunate realities of a lack of funding and coordination in the UK around pediatric oncology. “For childhood cancer you really need as much collaboration among doctors as possible to understand how treatments can get better because there are relatively few cases,” she explains to host Lindsey Smith. In coping with Tilly's tragic death at the age of four, her parents have dedicated themselves to Neuroblastoma UK to support research efforts and have benefitted from the emotional and social support provided by a charity called Jak's Den, founded by the family of a victim of childhood cancer. This is a wrenching, illuminating episode in our Year of the Zebra series offering important insights from a parent's perspective for providers and policymakers alike. Mentioned in this episode: Jak's Den https://www.teamjak.org.uk/Neuroblastoma UK https://www.neuroblastoma.org.uk/
