In December 2006, the town of Ipswich was rocked by a spree of brutal murders targeting sex workers in its notorious red light area. But the story didn't end with the capture of the so-called ‘Suffolk Strangler', Steve Wright… The murders of Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Annette Nicholls and Paula Clennell would go on to transform policing strategies for prostitution in the UK (and even inspired a tone-deaf musical). And with killer Steve Wright back in the news in February 2026 after pleading guilty to the murder of schoolgirl Victoria Hall in 1999, this decades-old case still hasn't run out of surprises.--Patreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesYouTube - Full-length Video EpisodesTikTok / InstagramSources and more available on redhandedpodcast.com

How Suffolk Constabulary secured justice decades later — and what this case reveals about sex worker safety, family liaison, evidence-led policing, and whistleblowers. In this episode of Crime Time Inc., Simon and Tom examine Steve Wright — widely known as the “Suffolk Strangler” (also referred to as the “Ipswich Ripper”) — and the cold case breakthrough that linked him to the 1999 abduction and murder of 17-year-old Victoria Hall.We unpack what made Suffolk Constabulary's investigation stand out, how advances in forensic science can reopen “closed” history, and why long-term family liaison support can matter for decades, not days.Simon and Tom also explore the realities of policing vulnerable communities, the risks faced by sex workers working on the street, and how systems and legislation can unintentionally increase danger rather than reduce it.The conversation broadens into “policing politics” — when forces get pulled into high-stakes public controversies — and finishes on a practical, real-world discussion of whistleblowers: how to separate genuine warnings from grievance, and why leadership must follow the evidence either way.Listener note: This episode discusses murder and violence against women.Chapters / Timestamps00:00 Crime Time Inc. intro00:44 A pause from Zodiac: back to the Suffolk Strangler case02:42 Suffolk Constabulary's investigation & long-term family liaison05:18 Broadchurch and what not to do as a family liaison officer07:22 Steve Wright, victims' families, and the 1999 case08:39 Pattern, geography, and “spree” timelines10:32 Could there be other victims? Super Bowl weekend sets the stage, with major league sports accomplishments and Survivor performance both in the spotlight. Right from the start, Rob and Sam highlight the crossover between real-world athletic achievements and Survivor gameplay, with Jeff Kent's Baseball Hall of Fame induction sparking much of the conversation. The podcast breaks down an impressive list of 18 Survivor alums, from NFL tackles and Olympic swimmers to race car drivers and MMA fighters. More than 25 years after the crime was committed, a man already serving a whole life order for five murders has pleaded guilty to killing again. This admission dates back to 1999, years before Ipswich became a crime scene, and years before his name was known to the public. This afternoon, serial murderer Steven Wright stood at The Old Bailey once more, and was sentenced to 40 years in prison for a murder that lay unresolved for decades. This is the story of a person whose violence didn't begin where most people think it did. Long before the discovery of were Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Annette Nicholls, and Paula Clennell in and around Ipswich, there were warning signs, near misses, and unanswered questions. Some of them were reported at the time. Others only make sense in hindsight. But together, they paint a picture of behaviour that was escalating quietly, went largely unnoticed, and was ultimately catastrophic.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. Heavy Metal Gods Judas Priest make their first appearance on the Album Review Crew with their most controversial album. This is Judas Priest with their classic lineup, led by charismatic frontman with his legendary vocals, Rob Halford. The dual guitar attack by Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing is amongst the best in heavy metal. Ian Hill on bass and Dave Holland on drums complete the rhythm section. Turbo made it to #17 on Billboard album charts and eventually went platinum. Their videos for Turbo Lover, Locked In & Parental Guidance were in the MTV rotation . Turbo was a vast departure from what Judas Priest fans were used to and caused quite a stir. As this podcast lands, it's 75 years to the day since the first 'God slot' on the BBC Light Programme. It was first called Five to Ten, and is now Pause for Thought on BBC Radio 2. Podcast host Paul has been Pausing for Thought for over a decade, with Chris Evans, Zoe Ball and Scott Mills, and was recently asked to present a history of Pause for Thought to a roomful of Pause for Thoughters, the Radio 2 boss, and today's Breakfast Show host Scott Mills. So a version of that is on this episode, with some golden oldie clips, including Ray Moore and Derek Jameson. And even a bit of Steve Wright, because why not. It's a mini-sode ahead of our Christmas special, so we look ahead to that, with a little more info on Paul's upcoming Radio 4 drama about the first radio drama, The Truth About Phyllis Twigg. The companion episode will be next time on the podcast, but for now there's info on where in London you can go to listen to the story version of that original radio drama - ME London, the hotel on the site of Marconi House and the BBC's first studio. You can go this December, and listen to our exclusive recording, by, Paul, Carina Saner (Phyllis' great-granddaughter) and Flora Saner (Phyllis' great-great-granddaughter). ...And if you can't make it to London, we'll play it for you on the next episode.  A little too on our moment-by-moment timeline of British broadcasting - we're in November 1923 and it's GK Chesterton from Manchester, a Welsh talk from Wales, the first radio novel, and some comments in the Radio Times on the benefits of radio opera. (This WAS going to be an episode about the first BBC Armistice broadcast - but with all the above to tell more immediately, I decided to hold back the Armistice episode till the New Year. I know - it's not November - but we have a timeline to follow. The Slamfest Podcast brings the premier rock concert pregaming experience from the parking lot to the podcasting airwaves. Episode 277 - It's the end of the 3rd quarter and time for another concert regret episode.  This time Brad goes back to the early 90's and late 90's and discusses a huge 70's rock band - first, touring with a replacement singer and second, a reunion tour with the original singer. Bad Company w/ Brian Howe on lead vocals hit Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, IA on 7/2/93 and Bad Company's reunion tour with Paul Rodgers on lead vocals hit Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI on 7/9/99.  He welcomes Sonny Poony, from the Growin' Up Rock Podcast and Podcast Rock City and Steve Wright, from Podder than Hell, back to the podcast to recap these tours and talk about both versions of Bad Company.   For the Band on the Bill Spotlight, they put Paul Rodgers-era Bad Company songs up against Brian Howe-era Bad Company songs and they choose their favorites.  After a Slamfest Tip of the Week, they are faced with a variation of the "Which Side are you On?" segment - Side 1 from Bad Company's self-titled album from 1974 vs. Side 1 from Bad Company's ninth studio album, Holy Water from 1990.Music in this episode by:Bad CompanyBlack SabbathKissOzzyVisit the Slamfest Podcast online at: https://slamfest-podcast.simplecast.comRequest to join the Slamfest Podcast private Facebook page here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/slamfestpodcastE-mail us at : slamfestpodcast@gmail.comVisit Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni at Growin' Up Rock and Podcast Rock City:https://growinuprock.com/https://www.facebook.com/growinuprockVisit Steve and Podder than Hell Podcast at:https://www.facebook.com/PTHpodcasthttps://station5174.libsyn.com/
